I haven't watched Gintama before and I was wondering if I would have to watch the other seasons before this one. Is it a remake or is it carrying on from a prequel?

You can check its page to see quite easily.

It's the sequel to Gintama Echousen which is the sequel to Gintama' which is the sequel to Gintama. You have to watch all of them in the reverse order of how I mentioned them.

Like Introvertutle said, you gotta watch from the first one, this will be mentioned a lot but, the first 25 eps or so are character introduction since there's too many of them since most of Gintama's charisma comes from the characters.

This series has a LOT of running jokes and callbacks to previous seasons. Trust me, I learnt the hard way when I tried Gintama' first without touching the prequel. If 260+ episodes is really too daunting for you then I guess you could manage with watching just the first 20+ episodes of the first season then jumping into this since those episodes set up the foundation for the whole show. Once it gets into its groove and save for a select arcs after the change in director it's pretty much fantastic the whole way through though, so I highly advise against skipping anything. Why would you want to deprive yourself of such a great experience?

I still haven't finished the first season of Gintama and have already watched the other seasons as they aired. I think I started with Gintama' and as that ended I watched the first season and took a break when Enchosen aired. Now I'm hoping to finish Gintama before the new season airs, otherwise I'll put that on hold again. Despite watching the Gintama franchise in the weirdest order ever, I didn't have any problems. I think as long as you watch the episodes of each seasons in the correct order it doesn't matter where you start.

I find it easier to get into an anime while it airs and Gintama is doesn't have a complex plot so you can get into it quickly. There are plenty of jokes so if you miss one of hundred it doesn't make that much of a difference.

If the show sounds interesting, definitely check out the original "Gintama" and if it is to your liking just keep going along with it.
Gintama 2015 is not a remake it's a sequal to Gintama, Gintama', and Gintama Enchousen in that order.

Not really, at least not for this question. People can just use their common sense and see on each entry's page if it's a sequel, remake, etc.

Definitely, but its worth it. While its not like Naruto or ( other insert shonen of your choice), where they will start off in the middle of some huge 75 episode battle arc, there is a lot of the show that you will only get if watch the other episodes. This show has a ton of running jokes, and jokes that build off of other jokes. It also has a huge cast of characters, that will probably leave you feeling lost if you don't know who they all are. I don't know why but I only got to watch Gintama recently. It was totally engrossing to the point that I finished all 200+ episodes in a little over a month, which rarely happens for me anymore. It is an amazing show, probably the funniest show/anime I have ever seen. I was actually laughing out loud for every single episode and had an incident with water shooting out of my nose (not making this up), and chocking on some food. It just gets better and better as you move through the seasons.

I've been wondering about this too >,< I want to watch it right away, but I don't want to spoil myself (I don't read the manga). I regret, with all my heart, that I only started this series recently. I don't want to skip any parts, but I only have until episode 100 downloaded. Since there will be a new series this year, I want to finish it right away - the sooner the better.

Does anybody know where I can download (or just watch them, but I prefer downloading x.x) the episodes, complete with the references and translation notes??? Thank you ^^

Big Vers.

It's 275 episodes you've gotta plow through, but yes. I was hoping to finish in time but I'm only around the 233 mark atm, despite watching this for months. I guess I'll have to put this series on hold for a week or two myself, even though I rly didn't want it to come to that.

I don't really see a problem with that, I'm at ep 221 and my plan is not to start new series until I'm finished with previous seasons. Gintama's not running anywhere :P

@topic, I think it's better to watch previous seasons, because
1. as i wrote before, Gintama's not running anywhere,
2. this anime is great, so eventually you'd want to watch it all <3 that's why I also think it's not necessarily a good idea to watch both first season and the newest one at one time

Hell yea! I Still got a while before I can start this season since I just also just started FINALLY watching Gintama like a few days ago, with just 42 eps into the big 1st season. But I'll be damned if it's not one of the most entertaining shows I've watched, but it's more than that. A godly parody with meaning and a freaking awesome cast, but that's cutting it as short as possible as what Gintama seems to be and I feel like I've just scratched the surface.

Gintama fall's into a category in it's own and I'm beginning to think that it's gonna change the way I look at some anime.

You should also watch the Jump Festa 2005 Special before watching Gintama and the Jump Anime Tour 2008 Special somewhere around episode 100. Also, there's the Jump Festa 2014 Special which you should watch between Kanketsu-hen and the OVA but you can't find it on the internet yet.

In each new season of Gintama, there is always somebody who opens a tread like this... I will always answer like somebody here answered me.
If the show is annoying because of too much jokes/parodies and such, skip to the serious arcs to watch the actual story(epic by the way).
To do so, watch a couple of the first eps to know the characters and after that, watch by the following order - http://www.yorozuyasoul.com/gintama/arcs

Have fun ;)

i'm not even finishing first 20 eps of 1st season and watching this season fine for the 1st episode. But probably you'll miss a thing or two which is a nice reason to check the episode discussion thread.

also noticed that there are few characters that i dont know from the OP video.

Don't do it, you may have been fine for the first episode but there is a lot of continuity. Just watch it normally.

I feel like the current first episode of this season would come off as completely retarded to someone who tried to jump into Gintama right now.

It's not really a good introductory episode imo, but then again the first couple dozen episodes are rough too.

Still I'd advise starting at least at Gintama', but you'll get the most out of it starting at the begining for sure.

I agree. To truly understand what Gintama is about, you gotta start from the beginning. At least that's how I feel.

It's simple, there a bunch of seasons, of course you have to watch from the beginning. The reasons are simple, story wise and the characters relationships are numerous... The only choice there is, is jumping the "filler"(only puns and jokes) episodes and watch only the "serious arcs"(story).
Either way is awesome, just depends on what you like more.

Yes, I highly recommend watching Gintama°'s prequels first (that is, if you want to feel connected to the characters and make sense of the mostly serious arcs.) Gintama honestly has a mediocre start, but it gets A LOT better. I personally didn't like Gintama that much up until episodes 50+, and now it's one of my favorite anime series. As dssyn already said, it's best to skip episodes 1-2 since they're lackluster filler episodes. Also, it's important to note that Gintama is a series that is not for everyone.

Whats the point of watching something when you skip 200+ episodes??
Seriously, that's like skipping 200+ episodes of Conan or One Piece...
Check out the new episode if you want, it's not that hard to follow
if you like it go watch from the beginning
otherwise you wont enjoy and appreciate all the characters from the series
(and thats many of them)

Conan isn't a good example, it's full of fillers and cases that doesn't really helps the story, with a guide i guess you could skip a good amount of episodes.
But yeah, there it's no point on doing that.

well gintamas' are being build from tons of mini arcs

but if you want to skip it

just watch first 30 episode from Gintama

and just leap to newest installement of Gintama

but 1 question for you, why skip it? when you can watch 260++ (well the pilots are weak) of awesomeness, as simple as that

F**K this fighter jets, sound polutions

well, i dont have that much time to watch all of it, and the first 20 episodes didnt really grasp my attention.

but as this season goes i'll probably watch the older one too, so i'll have a complete vision of what gintama is and why it deserved to be on #1 spot in MAL.

You not having time to watch it is just a shit excuse because you can't put forward the effort to finish a show. Get over yourself. If you watched just 1 episode a day then you'd eventually catch up. The shows not going anywhere. If you still don't like it by episode 20, then why bother watching a new season for it?

You don't know a few of the characters in the new OP? Yeah, then definitely don't bother watching the new season then you casual.
