How important is setting to you in anime and how often you do you pay attention to it?

I think visual setting is important because it alone can truly establish the atmosphere and tone of a scene without the characters themselves.

Anime like Cowboy Bebop really pull off the scenery imo

I really hate those anime where 90% of it takes place in a club room GJ-Bu. It really limits how much you can see in an anime.

It's more the whipped cream. Or at least the cherry on top. For me at least.

I really don't pay attention to it if the characters/plot make up for it.

It's background and sound that creates the atmosphere for me. Therefor they are the elements that pull away from life and into the story that's presented to me.

if an anime's single setting, it's single setting. i'm not fussed. characters (and music) can set the atmosphere and tone as well, especially in a series where the characters take precedence over the world they're set in.

also, the anime in your sig is single setting. lol.

Like others said its a bonus for me but if the background is not really detailed its not a negative against the show. I haven't see a show with terrible background tho (if I have I don't remember).

It's really just eye candy for me. Sure it's better if it's prettier like Nagi No Asakara's, but as long as it sets a location and time, it's also perfect.

Most shows in a high school setting could leave out the background entirely and I doubt I would even notice. Honestly, you could draw your moeblobs in a void and get the same effect.

In fact, rest easy Japan, I've got endless free time, democracy and an imagination. I'll do the work for you.

the Sailormoon remake puts little effort on drawing background images and its one of the reasons why it feels so cheaply made

It's not the most important thing to me, but I honestly love it when a show manages to make me pause every once in a while just for the beautiful scenery.

Pretty much this. To me, art and animation isn't an important aspect to anime but I do love pausing at beautiful scenery scenes, especially when watching slice of life like Non Non Biyori c:

Backround and the details are quite important for me. They make the anime seem more real and improve the overall view.

But the intense plot and characters can make me forget the scenery alltogether, so it's not nessessary to have great backrounds to have a great anime. Still, it always makes me like the series in question some more.

It depends. In Aria, being an important feature in the anime, it affected greatly the impact of it.

It matters a lot to me. I stare at backgrounds quite often and they create the atmosphere. Of course I prefer a well-drawn countryside than anime 'locked' in school or some other place.

The background art doesn't even need to be that well-drawn. As long as the setting itself is built upon and feels real, then it can create a certain tone for the series. I think Aria the Natural is the best example of this. For an anime that's so focused on its world, it has really flat background art at times, but this doesn't prevent Neo-Venezia from having its own history, culture, inhabitants, and a touch of the supernatural. Fortunately the background art became a lot better in the Origination, but unfortunately that's also when the series switched its focus from the setting to the characters.

Anyway, I love well-thought-out settings and it's the primary reason I enjoy the Aria series, Kemono no Souja Erin, Seirei no Moribito, GitS:SAC, etc. But like others have said, the background art is just a bonus.

It makes the anime more immersive the more detailed it is, IMO.

Background is important to make the setting of an anime determine where it or where the place is

Black Lagoon has scenery shot every single episode.

Anyways, not really that important, but it definitely adds to the anime.
I found Railgun to have lively backgrounds, and that was one of the things I liked about it lol.

It makes me feel that the people behind the show really cared enough to create such a beautiful background, even if it was only showed a few short seconds. I could imagine how Mushishi would be if the backgrounds wouldn't be as amazing as they are. It would probably be a mediocre show in comparison. So yeah, scenery and stuff like that is very important for certain shows.

^ For most. And for atmospheric shows (Mushishi, Shinsekai Yori), it helps out a lot.
