I suppose this isn't really a debate thread as much as it is just me asking a question, but which studios are generally considered the best? I see a lot of people talking about Madhouse as a really great one, but besides Madhouse and Toei, I don't really know any others. Shadow55 said: Well, i got into studio culture through MALgraph, but sadly they got banned. Here is their example profile: http://mal.oko.im/rr-/fav,anime I suppose this isn't really a debate thread as much as it is just me asking a question, but which studios are generally considered the best? I see a lot of people talking about Madhouse as a really great one, but besides Madhouse and Toei, I don't really know any others. Madhouse is so low rated because he watched the most anime from them =p Well, to answer your question, Madhouse is certainly very popular in the western world, and here is a list of their anime, sorted by rating. They certainly made a lot of very good anime, and cover a lot of genres, especially dark/serious anime which other studios don't do as much. Toei, on the other hand, is most known for their very long kids anime like Dragonball Z, One Piece and Sailor Moon. Some other big names are -Pierrot for other long running shounen, like Naruto and Bleach -Sunrise for their flagship anime Gundam, other cool mecha like Code Geass, and the infamous Gintama who occupies a lot of spots in MAL's top anime list, and their recent best-seller, Love Live! -Shaft for Shinbo's signature art style, best seen in Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei, Madoka and Bakemonogatari -Kyoto Animation for teaching so many people what moe means, after Haruhi, Lucky Star and K-ON -J.C. Staff for their School, Slice of Life and Romance series like Toradora, Bakuman and Honey and Clover -Gainax for their beloved mecha series Evangelion and Gurren Lagann, and crazier stuff like FLCL and Panty&Stocking -Bones for being pretty much a smaller Madhouse, with a lot of great titles from a variety of genres, including the #1 on MAL, FMA:B If you want to get more into studio culture, whenever you watch an anime, go to its MAL&Wikipedia page, and see which studio made the anime, and check out their other works. There are many other really good small or less popular studios with their own style which might appeal to you like Brains Base and P.A. Works. Hell, one of your favourite anime, SnK, was made by Production IG which is a very good studio, but rarely mentioned in this kind of threads. Wikipedia is your friend if you want to learn more about studios. Also on MAL, you can click the studio and then sort by rating to see a studio's most loved works. |

yhunata said: Pierrot can do well when they're given a decent budget. Only with the 7th episode of Soredemo Sekai wa Utsukushii did I find something to really complain about, but that was probably more due to the source material itself. Most of the openings they make also show that they have the animation quality. I hope they switch to more 13-26 episode series once their cash cow is over. With Bones, I've never really had a bad experience. Even with DtB2, I still had more fun watching it than some of the shittier stuff from some other studios. They also get props to the brilliant job they did with FMA;B. Shaft is so-so with me. While I really like the style they used with Monogatari, I don't think they should've used it with MekakuCity Actors since it just seemed Mekaku seem even more boring. I know it's more of a director thing, so if he's worked with any other studios and done the same, you can correct me on that. KyoAni has to get props for taking shit and turning it into..... well, K-On!. When I first read the K-On! manga, I hadn't watched the anime, but I'd seen clips of it. So when I read it, I often found myself questioning whether I was reading the right manga. Shocked said: Deen...I know they're not all bad. Rurouni Kenshin was great and Higurashi had its moments but...I dunno, were they just flukes? DEEN only took over RuroKen when it was time for fillers. Someone please take RuroKen's license away from these idiots, please. |

As I'm catching up on past anime, I'm seeing a lot of stuff by Production I.G that I'm liking or expect to like. Patlabor, Ghost in the Shell: SAC, xxxholic, Tsubasa Tokyo Revelations, Ghost Hound, Usagi Drop, Kimi ni Todoke, amongst others. Futuristic policing and science fiction, fantasy and the supernatural, slice of life and romance...I don't know how to narrow down what they specialize in, but I'm liking them so far. |

As a Type-Moon fan, it's hard for me to deny that I love Ufotable, if only for Fate/Zero and Kara no Kyoukai, as both series look beautiful and are great anime. I suppose I'm also quite fond of KyoAni for works like Haruhi Suzumiya, Nichijou, and Clannad, but I haven't seen their latest works yet. I'm also pretty cool with Bones, since they did good with FMA, Chaika, Sword of the Stranger, and DtB. Can't really think of any studios I outright dislike at the moment, except maybe Gainax, even if Evangelion is my favorite. |
And I mean that in the most sexually painful way possible. |

Worst: A-1 Pictures (Fairy Tail, Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic, etc.) -The shows they choose arent bad but they seem to have a knack for messing things up. Like removing the blood in Fairy Tail or altering the FUCK out of Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic. Favorite: BONES (Soul Eater, FMA/B, Chaika - The Coffin Princess, Darker Than Black, Blast of Tempest, etc) -I just love their works. Best: ufoTable (Kara no Kyoukai, Fate/*) -The animations are beautiful, the OSTs are awesome, and the icing on the cake: they dont censor ANYTHING. Yeah but at the same time, a lot of people have bad misconceptions about the Fate series in general, like Shirou's superhero complex coming off as generic to anime-only viewers instead of "practically unhealthy" in the VN. Ah, well. Here's to hoping Ufotable does him justice. |

What I consider my favorites would be Unfotable: Their animation is just some of the best out there, and they get some really good material to work with. Madhouse: They manage to snag some good material to adapt and usually make it work out fantastically. Production I.G : Just some pretty solid results for the amount of stuff they actually adapt. Ones that are ehh to me: DEEN: While they have made some stuff I've particularly enjoyed. I feel like they are really hit or miss especially with some shows that I was looking forward to watching Xexcis: My god most of their stuff is about as bad as Feel studio. Studios I like but I'm disappointed in: Shaft: I feel like they keep wanting to do the same thing over and over again especially on shows that really don't need it ( I'm looking at you Mekaku). |

I guess J.C. Staff since they've done Sakurasou, the anime which for me has the best character art. Shaft is my least favourite because the faces of characters in their art repels me, it's a barrier I can't cross with Monogatari. Their only anime which I was able to watch so far was Nisekoi, which was decent but had a lot of the same art shortcuts taken (passed off as pretentious art, of course) as always. |

As an addendum to my other post, considered to be the worst studios are -Studio DEEN for some controversial VN adaptations, namely Fate/Stay Night and Higurashi, and the 3rd lowest rated anime, Pupa; That being said, they still did some good yaoi/yuri stuff -Idea Factory for the 1st and 2nd lowest rated anime, and a number of other poorly recieved shows; understandable, since they're primarily a video game studio, and they have one anime that was relatively well recieved (Neptunia) There's also a bunch of no name studios like 8bit or Gokumi that didn't make any particularly interesting anime, and nobody cares about them which i think that are also worthy of being called 'worst studio' (well, 2nd worst... worst is idea factory) Zeatha said: And i totally forgot about ghibli @_@" too mainstream for me, and i dont like movies, but their movies do occupy several slots in the "List of highest-grossing animated films"Has anyone mentioned Studio Ghibli? Best: Gainax, pre-Trigger at least. I'd like to give it to ufotable (and they may win out in the future) but Evangelion, FLCL, Gurren Lagann, Gunbuster... just so many titles bursting with originality and energy and that shows in every frame of their work... well, up until they completely spent their budget ;) Worst: Bee Train. There are so many bad studios out there that this was a harder choice than I thought it would be. Eventually thought, I had to give the "award" to the studio I take fault with because of their nature. I've started Bee Train anime before and rarely complete them. The only one I ever finished was the first season of Tsubasa. All you need to know they ruined it is watch what happened when Production I.G. did Tokyo Revelations to see every gaping flaw in the Bee Train adaptation. With that aside, I can't stand the hard-lined character designs they insist upon, they regularly make anime where guns feature prominently and never show an ounce of blood out of their own principles, they butcher source material and they can't pace for crap. Yes, their series contain some of Yuki Kajiura's best work, but I can and have enjoyed her OSTs far more on their own than as accompaniment for lackluster work. |

best: Kyo Ani - its quite obvious that these guys would be in top percentage. its not to say that everything they touch is gold but they have been pretty consistent with making anime. they usually do adaptions very well, with their fluid animations and colorful designs complementing everything (its like Key and KyoAni were made for each other). and of course, they aren't slouches when it comes to action either. they are even able to improve on some other adaptions greatly (this seems to the grand opinion on K-ON). and, its quite obvious that they are the unofficial kings of moeblobs. and an Honorable mention to Toei, Sunrise and Madhouse. Toei - being in charge of multiple famous brands clearly should get you a mention, i think they have been able to deliver pretty okay on shows that don't have a set date to end (one Piece) and this New Sailor Moon animation shows us they have got high quality skills. Madhouse - I haven't watched much of their stuff, but from what I've watched, I've been very pleased with. good animation all around. in Hanayamata, the colors and designs are full of life and beauty, its pleasant to watch. Now, the other show from madhouse that i watched was Mahouka Koukou. alot of people say that they kinda botched the adaptions a bit. even so, its still pleasant imo. animations and character designs are very clean and pleasant. the Action ranges from okay to awesome so far too. Sunrise - if your a fan of mecha and comedy anime, you might like these guys. they have produce MANY popular mecha anime, from Code geass to gundams. they also have helped make the Gintama series which, to my understanding, is VERY well received. they even have a foot in the Idol door, Producing the Love live anime and the Aikatsu anime (from my understanding, Aikatsu is a VERY big brand, even surpassing Pretty cure in cash and popular) edit: forgot to add Sunrise. |

I don't have a worst studio, since all my least favorite anime are spread out in different studio's, but I have quite a few favs. Most of the J.C Staff titles were my first anime. And just personal preference I like Gainax/Trigger for their unique stuff. But definitely the gods (for animation at least) is KyoAni and ufotable, their anime are SOO BEAUTIFUL-LOOKING! |
