Because maturity is all about how a person types. That is all that matters, right? Not like how you treat others and react to things has anything to do with maturity. |

Don't most people go through that im-a-12-year-old-and-better-than-you phase? (Well psh I know I did. I try to shove my old account and my old forum posts here down a deep pit in my soul past the point of no return). Some people will outgrow it and some people won't :( |

age is not a reliable factor when it comes to maturity. also, telling the age of someone on a forum is almost impossible. One reason is that many users on english forums are actually foreign and therefore lack significant english skills. This results in various grammar mistakes and makes them seem much more younger/dumb than they actually are. |

Pretty sure that's a dead giveaway you do actually know English and are just pretending not to. |

The only reason it is excusable is because you lower the chance of catastrophic consequences by a few percent points. You'll probably crash anyway, but, hey, even a single percent point in the other direction helps! traed said: snaphat said: Good job with that spell checking.^ THAT's exactly the kind of thing I'm meant when I said about spell checking, punctuation, etc.. Grammar and spellcheck has only little to do with the obstacle of determining age of foreigners through their posts. Foreigners often have more difficult picking the correct words and appropriate using them. Because of that posts might sound more idiotic. Picking some specific set of words or not picking them will weight on how mature you look. And because (we) foreigners might not be too familiar with these set of words we might not sound much mature because of the words. Try speaking Japanese in a Japanese board without being too much familiar with the language, chances are you won't sound as mature as people who know the language since birth. I myself probably sounding juvenile as fuck whenever I post something here. tl;dr - Misspelling has little to do with the problem, the problem is not being able to freely express yourself due to language constraints. |

This is why I'm rather skeptical when someone refuses to use spell check, or write in anything that resembles remotely coherent sentence structure. Yet, I've seen ESL claimed various times around the web by people doing exactly this. Many of the people I work with are ESL and they only do what you are saying above or use odd but correct sentence structure. I'm talking about some folk who barely know any English when they arrive in the U.S. |

Noone would say Plato or Aristotle aren't relevant anymore just because they are long gone. Influence = relevance. He's not relevant in the individual fan's life (but what is?), but he's still relevant in terms of animanga as a whole, in terms of the industry and, if that's where your interests lie you should know about him, or rather you will sooner or later if you want to or not. People grow up xD, there's was and always be an age gap but I must say its resourceful as well as influential depending on the conversations (conversations vary) talking to those who are older by years even on the Internet. Lol we were all annoying kids once hahahaha nothing's wrong with that, wisdom and sense come with years and even after years people still have a hard time attaining as much. |

snaphat said: I can call it a spelling error because it may have been auto correct for all I know, or a typo, or bad grammar in this instance. Only you know which it was. It does not really matter what word I choose to call it there from my lack of ability to be omnipotent. My pointing out an error you made is to point out that you seem to act as if you expect near perfection when you yourself continues making errors, forgiving yourself then criticizing others. That is double standards set for yourself versus others. I really could not care less for such trivial things when I understand the context of what someone writes just fine including errors otherwise. There are people that use horrible misspellings that are intentional and that is where the line should be drawn. I can't stand when people write "dah" instead of "the" unless making a certain quote or humour of sorts. You on the other hand are being overly critical. You being in the US you should very well know how poor and non standardized the teaching of English is in schools, unless you attended a private school or got lucky and had good public schools. If you even think about pulling up the poor argument of this being the "age of the internet" and how "education is free" then you are completely overlooking how people take focus on what interests them. A person who does not plan to write professionally or as a personal hobby will be very unlikely to explore further into things alone. Of course they should do this if they are basically illiterate but if a person makes a few errors here and there just talking to people online, it really does not matter. Maturity has absolutely nothing to do with matters like these. What you are doing is making a false correlation of maturity to make it seem worse than it really is as if to mock others for not being scholarly. You can not even handle being polite about corrections and make personal attacks on intelligence or maturity that are uncalled for. You are doing little more than bloating your ego. That is immature.traed said: snaphat said: Good job with that spell checking.^ THAT's exactly the kind of thing I'm meant when I said about spell checking, punctuation, etc.. It's one thing if it is just normal typos and such, it's quite another when it is something like that. And we do have people who do that around here, sadly :-D Good job at purposely misinterpreting the context of his and my posts. Pointless corrections of simple grammar mistakes is pointless. Also, that wasn't even a speling error.. |

A lot of people might refer to me as a radical feminist. I don't hold my views because I 'try to fit in', I have my views because that's what I believe is morally correct. I know plenty of people who disagree with my views offline and online, but that doesn't urge me to change my beliefs because I want to fit in with some nonexistent crowd. I'm biased, I admit, and that doesn't stop me from justifying my views. We're all biased here. I'm vocal because I'm trying to stand up for what I believe in. If Martin Luther King wasn't vocal about his views, we wouldn't be where we are today. |

Well, tbh I've seen the contrary occur way more often, with cases like the one you mentionned being exceptions. Socially accepted opinions and political correctness don't actually seem that popular on the Internet (whether it be among the youth or the older users). In an environment when no one has a face or a name, being different in any way shape of form is the only way to get visibly noticed (where d'ya think trolls come from?). I've seen too many kids trying to act edgy for the sake of having a different opinion than everyone else. I would even argue that socially accepted opinions (more or less nuanced depending on various factors) represent a majority, but I'm not a statistician so I'll stop talking out of my ass. |

A lot of people tend to just repeat what other people say to fit with them or to benefit their ow selves but might not contemplate all angles of things questioning every belief and opinion or possibility. It is not just young people that do that but its younger that is more vulnerable to that methodology.
