I originally kept seeing the still frames for this show on Tumblr so i thought that I should give this show a try. So I downloaded Aku no Hana ( Flowers of Evil) a month ago. I watched it on my laptop and was immediately turned off a bit because of the choppy playback and the drawing.I wrote this show off as a 5/10. A few episodes in I started to get more into it and decided it warranted a 6/10 because this anime was focused off a ridiculous decision (don't want to reveal spoilers). By the end of the series i gave this show a 7/10 and was actually looking forward to the next season.

So a couple of days ago I watched the first episode again after I converted the entire series into playable avi files and I felt the show deserved an 8/10 since I am all for realistic psychological anime. I found the drawing to be refreshing and I even plan to burn it to dvd so I can watch it on my new plasma in the upcoming weeks.

I was surfing the net for the best animes of 2013 because I needed some new ideas. Despite the fact that I heard this anime was controversial it did not make Tor.com list of anime's year in review. if anything at the end of the article the editor stated this disclaimer:

" *For the record, to qualify for this list, the titles were required to...Not be Aku No Hana (Not sorry, that rotoscoping was a nightmare)"

So like seriously, what gives? This was actually a pretty good anime in my opinion once you look at it with fresh eyes and an open mind. Am I the only person that feels this way? Maybe because I fit into the 18+ category and that may have been the target audience?

I don't know I wanna hear all opinions good bad or ugly!

That is what I thought. Although to be honest, with the rotoscoping I don't think that this show should have been considered an Anime....

Even though I liked it overall, I'll admit it wasn't for everyone. There were several scenes where the art was so atrocious that it made the scene laughable rather than psychological and serious like it was trying to be. Still, I enjoyed it for what it was and 8/10'd it once I saw how its events fit into the rest of the manga.

According to Mal, 75.7% of the people that watched it gave it a favorable score. Guess you're part of the majority.

nah once you get over the art, it actually had a really great psychogical atmosphere which i think the art added too, look really bleak and moody and ugly!!! but its obvious some people can't get over it....

there were a few pointless scenes though (the long walking scene springs to mind which took up like a quarter of the episode)

OH NO YOU DIDNT
Aku no Hana's initial release launched a whopping 404 BD sales.

Sorry Op, but Anime are typically taken into question for continuation once they make the ten thousand or so margin in sales, not four hundred.

You should have seen the shitposting threads from back when this show started airing...

A lot of people giving 6~10, and since 6 to 10 is a variation of good, a lot of people think that it's a good anime. Said that, you are not the only one.

Agree, drop it after about 7 seconds in the video, after seeing the main character walking. I like the manga though. :) That's a new record :D

When I watched it for the very first time I really loved the ambience the show was producing however I became astonished whe I saw the low score on the website, that was the first time I disagreed with the MAL overall scores.

Nope you aren't, but get you used to people judging anime solely based on visuals.

It's funny people hate the animation because that plus realism in the voice acting is what kept me into the anime. That being said, I was a bit disappointed because every episode there'd be those bland and meaningless scenes, you know, those 10-15 seconds where you'd stare at a background, especially that one episode where half the episode was just Kasuga and Nakamura walking with no dialogue.

I liked the Aku no Hana anime quite a bit. It got me into the manga, but I think the vague rotoscoping added to the creepiness the series is trying to portray. It just doesn't feel the same in the manga.

I still feel sad for anyone who didn't watch till episode... I think it was 7? The classroom graffiti scene was absolutely great.

The things that sucks are your baseless opinion about what is good and what is not about this show.

First things first, the animation wasn't bad at all. Then, the plot and concepts were absurdly complex and completely related with a major part from the poems of the original "Le fleur du Mal". Even Kasuga was basically a representation of Rimbaud, Baudelaire loyal follower and apprentice.

The OST was stunning, slow-paced and strong, and that ED song is just the most pure example of what this series were going to be (represented perfectly the themes contained in the anime).

So, basically:
It is very good, but is incomplete. And I have no hopes of this gaining a sequel after those wonderfull numbers (sale).

I would HIGHLY recommend for those who like animes with psychological symbolism behind actions that normally would be considered nonsensical or even stupid (I can guarantee you that Baudelaire, before a genius when it comes to modern poetry, has a deeply developed mind when it cames to the anarcho-individualism study (and Nakamura, represented in this almost perfect "adaptation" of his complex and filosofical poetry, is a very good example of it).

And now, i'm gonna put this review on MAL.

You forget that on MAL a 6 means its the worse thing on the planet, there are only a handful of shows (and I do mean a handful (<3%) below a 6. There are 2298 ranked shows (excluding 0), 2240 are 6+ (i.e. 58 out of 2298). It's like these people have no idea what a 10 point grading system means.

To be fair to those people, animation is a visual medium. Also, it's funny I was just thinking of Aku no Hana yesterday, but it would be a good example (AoT being another) where I think that the choice of animation style was completely wrong. The main theme of this show is decadence and degeneration, but to have both you have to start from some sort of normality. By using rotoscope (as well as over doing the desolation of the town at the start), there was no sense of normalcy, hence when the characters began their descent it meant nothing.

Also, they really messed up the lead femaile MC. Normally I am fine with not making the characters "cute", but in this show they should have done it (for much the same reasons above), the shock that she is such a delinquent was lost because she looked like a delinquent from the start.

The previous season "Boys on the Slope" used rotoscope and it went over just fine, but it really was the wrong style to use for this show.

I actually didn't mind that. To me, it added to the realism. The feeling that there's just nothing there, nothing happening, anywhere. I do think they used that kind of scene too often, though.

This. I discovered Aku no Hana manga way before the anime but I dropped it just like that.

I forgot about it, then I got into the anime the first ten seconds.

Today I picked up the first volume of The Flowers of Evil. I'm surprised by how many episodes they squeezed out of the first volume alone. They got, what, 3 episodes out of the first five or so chapters alone? No wonder there are so many walking sequences.

Ur not the only one . For me , this anime is not that bad. I dont know why others think this sucks but i guess everyone has a different opinion. I like this anime . Im not actually into psychological genre but this one makes me interested to watch more. For me the animation is not that bad. Gloomy but not that bad. Not recommended for people who usually into romance .. Also the music is good.

Im waiting for part 2 .. ^^

I give it a thumbs up, because it fits in with my favorite genre (slice of life/realistic drama), and because it pushes the envelope of serious subject matter and adult-themed situations. It's sick, and I would rather not live in a world like that, but I appreciate the author's intent and I think it is really a vehicle for exposing the fringe lunatic end of Japanese culture and raising awareness of the problems that middle schoolers can face. 12-14 years of age is a very difficult time for Japanese children, especially boys.

:)))
Those were the scenes with so much meaning!
Compared to actual movements of such intense moments, the anime covered it quick.

That silence is not silence at all. It is soo loaded. It hangs on you, encapsulates you - that is the breeding ground of 'Aku no Hana'.

My god, I miss this show.
Will need to rewatch it.
I hate the idea of reading the manga.. I'm getting sick of standard anime character designs. The rotoscoping totally worked for me. I wish it had a season 2. :(

Baudelaire is so fucking complex. Geh.
