Haha great episode. Best anti-smoking campaign material ever. And Kate rallying the people was awesome as usual.

I don't have anything against smokers but I really can't stand it when people just smoke wherever they want even when there are already designated smoking zones for them. Like when I'm waiting for the bus or taking a stroll, I'm like "got to get upwind!" And that restaurant scene happens a lot in real life. Smoking in a small dining area while people are still eating...disgusting. Even when there's a smoking area, I can't count how many times I've pointed out to someone that he's sitting in the non-smoking area. Ugh.

I'm guessing the people who "hated" this episode are smokers...

I'm glad A1 is doing good for society. I thought they were just out to sell merchandise and cater to otaku but maybe I was wrong.

No wonder. The director of this show, Tensai Okamura, hates smoking.
Darker Than Black, which is directed by Okamura, also has a anti-somoking character.

All those people who assume that people who didn't like this episode are pro-smokers... Whether or not you support smoking has nothing to do with feeling horrified at beating up or killing someone just because they smoke. I don't like smoking either, but I wouldn't resort to violence because of that. It's called decency.

It looks like this anime walks a fine line between funny-ridiculous and scary-ridiculous, and doesn't always keep its step. This episode here was hilarious for most of the first half, but once the smoking woman told Kate off for being a self-centred bratty princess the tone went dark in an instant. It's true. She is just being bratty, trying to force her ideals on others. And after that, with the anti-smoking machine, the public violence, and exterminator squads... it just wasn't funny any more. In fact, it was pretty horrific seeing a little girl going about ordering the deaths of people just because they smoke.

Okay, it was still bearable. Strange tonal shifts are fine as long as they are justified by the story. But the story was just a cop-out at the end, and the lack of resolution with normal life following immediately afterward just leaves a strange, creepy aftertone to the episode. This episode was similar in many ways to the first, with its juxtaposition of something which should be very wrong (warfare, world destruction, violence) and Zvezda's silliness. But at least episode 1 wrapped up better than this.

Still, not a bad episode. While I can't speak for the content, in terms of scripting, directing and music technique it was pretty good.

As someone who quit smoking just like four months ago I completely agree with the point that smoking is a generally filthy, smelly addiction and thus supposedly bad. But turning a whole episode into anti-smoking campaign is just lame. Did anyone ever told the director that negative advertisement is still an advertisement? If smoking is not acceptable in PG-13 rated show so be it, but wouldn't it be just better to pretend smoking does not exist in given world? Don't give children ideas about filthy habits if you won't want them to pick them up as they would definitely try it out first and think about it later. And in case of smoking (and any other addiction) it's always better not to start in the first place :-)

Nuff said. I still like the show but i sincerely hope they will skip educational part next time.
Signature removed. It was too good for this cruel world.

the last thing i want is to be chilled out watching anime and it turns out they wasted an episode iv waited a week for to be a force fed lesson about not smoking.

Brilliant... just fucking brilliant! It's even more awesome that so many people (mostly smokers) were offended by this episode lol..

I love how they take a simple message (don't smoke) and tell it in a way that will actually pique the interest of whoever is watching (instead of you know, the usual anti-smoking campaign).

They may have exaggerated on their action but then again this is an anime that pushes the boundaries of what's right or wrong from the first episode. The main characters aren't even heroes, they're supposedly the villains of this world. You can't blame them for taking such a drastic action.

Well not a smoker here and I can't stand the smell of smoke (choke). Hate it when others smoke however not to the point to embrace this episode.

However, this episode was very uncomfortable to watch because it went into the black & white protrayal of smokers.. up to a point where it looks like propaganda. Whatever message it was trying to convey, it was not good and I didn't find this funny.

This episode is just wrong. Really bad taste.

Still, some smokers are real a**h****, as some posts here remind me. No that this justifies wasting an episode on such a dull issue.

I have more of a problem with the way the issue was handled in this episode. I really make me uneasy because it reminds me too much of hate propaganda. Maybe it's just me or time have changed. I'm surprised a lot of users here are OK with this kind of message.

In any case, resorting to violence to solve the issue is not the way of doing things. The first part was OK. Playing pranks and putting water on the smokers is fine. However, having mobs beat down smokers and declaring that smokers are not human and should be exterminated is too much.

It's more of not taking it seriously instead of being OK with the "message".

I think the episode's intention was just as comedy... which makes it very bad taste as you said, but not something deeper. Think of it like an episode of South Park, very politically incorrect but not an actual statement of ideology (though the author's standpoint might permeate unintendedly).

At any rate, the writer probably doesn't mean so much ill as the episode depicts. It's a bad joke, badly told to boot.

Actually I think this animation does a good job of keeping its step; indeed I think that what you say is very deliberate. Don't forget the opening scene, Kate's statue in a destroyed environment. The writers here I believe have a very good understanding of how "good intentions" can go horribly wrong (which is why intentions are hell's favorite paving material).

Kate is a Fascist, that is perfectly clear from her desire to "conquer". Don't forget that Hitler was anti-smoking, anti-drinking, vegetarian, whose love of animals would have been entirely in line with PETA. Of course this is primarily a comedy, so they may not go all post modern, but that isn't something I would worry about right now. Just enjoy the ride because there is a point behind it.

LoL I can't believe what I just saw! And all these comments here!
Seriously! The arguments used in this episode against smokers s*ck*d really hard.

1 - Where I live its illegal to smoke in restaurants and I believe its the same for most countries. Dunno about Japan though.

2 - If smokers are smoking in a corner of a street you won't smell the smoke unless you you join them. You shouldn't smoke while walking in the middle of the street - That's called RESPECT.

3 - There are ALOT of things you can smoke besides tobacco. No one ever got cancer or died from smoking cannabis and its been used by humans for more than 4000 years. Making all smokers look the same its a disrespect of the size of the world! Being a cannabis smoker myself I felt way too much offended the entire episode and for no reason because the idiot of the author was just thinking about tobacco! Japan as no sense whatsoever about the cannabis culture.

4 - If a tobacco smoker is respectful towards others, who the hell are you to tell him to stop smoking? I am sure there is not a single idiot who smokes tobacco and doesn't know about its harmful effects. Its his choice, he is not letting you feel the smoke so deal with it.

5 - The cigarette smoke pollutes the air?! Funny, I guess factories do not release smoke huh?! Even a small wild fire produces much more smoke than millions of smokers combined!

6 - Why do people think people start smoking because they want to look like bad boys? I know alot of tobacco smokers and only a few of them started smoking for such reason. There are alot of unlucky people in the world you know? They have the right to deal with their problems the way they choose to if they do not disturb others.

7 - The ONLY argument you CAN use against a tobacco smoker is that his sons will have a very high chance of being born with ASTHMA! That's why it should be illegal for women under 50 (and also for man to be a fair law) to smoke tobacco.

8 - The ammount of ignorance and disrespect shown in this episode is at the level of Reefer Madness 1936! I NEVER expected to see this kind of thing in an ANIME. Really really really disappointing!

As you can see I am not a tobacco smoker, plus I am against tobacco as well. However if you want to debate about something you need to know what you are talking about, show respect and use logic. None of that happened in this episode.

Funny you did not argued against any of my arguments. And what do you mean by "someone like me"? Show some respect kid.
Also I was very sceptical about this show from the very beginning, but after the first episode I decided to give it a try. I though maybe just maybe I was going to see good arguments against our rotten society system.
Instead I got the exact opposite in this episode.

1 - Where I live its illegal to smoke in restaurants and I believe its the same for most countries. Dunno about Japan though.

It's called courtesy/common sense and a lot of people don't have them.

2 - If smokers are smoking in a corner of a street you won't smell the smoke unless you you join them. You shouldn't smoke while walking in the middle of the street - That's called RESPECT.

Smoking cigarettes/tobacco is disrespectful to me and others and it's courtesy.

It's specifically about smoking tobacco/cigarettes not other stuff, did you see another substance this episode.

4 - If a tobacco smoker is respectful towards others, who the hell are you to tell him to stop smoking? I am sure there is not a single idiot who smokes tobacco and doesn't know about its harmful effects. Its his choice, he is not letting you feel the smoke so deal with it.

Unnecessary pollution is my problem, respectful or not.

5 - The cigarette smoke pollutes the air?! Funny, I guess factories do not release smoke huh?! Even a small wild fire produces much more smoke than millions of smokers combined!

The factories contribute something to humanity/society, cigarettes don't.

6 - Why do people think people start smoking because they want to look like bad boys? I know alot of tobacco smokers and only a few of them started smoking for such reason. There are alot of unlucky people in the world you know? They have the right to deal with their problems the way they choose to if they do not disturb others.

That's why there is cannabis/weed and other things to take/do and tobacco does disturb me. (see 5 and 7)

7 - The ONLY argument you CAN use against a tobacco smoker is that his sons will have a very high chance of being born with ASTHMA! That's why it should be illegal for women under 50 (and also for man to be a fair law) to smoke tobacco.

Smells, ruins the environment (air and trash), causes health problems and kills people (for both users and non users) Smokers are not uman and should die..

8 - The amount of ignorance and disrespect shown in this episode is at the level of Reefer Madness 1936! I NEVER expected to see this kind of thing in an ANIME. Really really really disappointing!

@ichii_1

Thank you for taking your time to argue against me. You really made some good points and I respect your opinion.
However there are a certain things I cannot quite agree with you:
1) If someone is smoking at a safe distance from you there is no reason for you to feel disturbed since you don't feel the smoke. Same logic as seeing gays/lesbians flirting, even if you don't like it you must respect them and not let it disturb you. If you can't do that you must seek help.
2) If unnecessary pollution is your problem you should only worry about cigarette pollution when factories stop releasing unnecessary waste to both the atmosphere and hydrosphere killing millions of aquatic animals every single day.
3) Not all factories contribute to society, in fact most of them take advantage of our position as consumers to do as they want in every possible way.

There are a few countries in which you can't drop your cigarretes nor even chicklets on the floor. Creating good laws can lead to a peaceful world for everybody. Pursuing, arresting and killing people will not solve anything for god sake! Even if its just an anime it really disturbed me.
Gintama has a few episodes against smoking as well but they were quite hilarious, no violence nor disrespect involved.

Seriously everyone who thinks this episode was ≥OK is either a troll, a ignorant or a sick person.

EDIT: I decided to not drop this anime just because I want to see how much more it will degrade from here. I bet they will kill gays, defs and homeless in the next episodes and I also bet this MAL community will keep agreeing with that :/
