I guess that's the root of this discussion's problem. I'm not very surprised by the awards given, but I'm glad Miyazaki got one. |

I wonder what other anime were considered for Best TV Series this year. Is there a list of nominees, 2nd/3rd place, honorable mentions or something? |

And why is popularity that important when giving an award? Shouldn't it be based on quality? Because Animation Kobe's awards are basically based off of the popularity of the show, not the quality. If you look at the titles that have won over the years, almost all the winners were/are some of the most popular anime. Last year Yuru Yuri won the Best Anime award; the year before that, Madoka won; the year before that, K-ON!! won. I'm not saying SnK deserves the award simply because it's popular - I'm saying it won because it's popular. |

A little disappointed SnK won best TV series award, though like others before have said, it's to be expected. As one currently reading the manga, I can say that while the initial story is interesting, it really isn't the best series out there for the past year, both for manga and anime as well I'm sure. The Suisei no Gargantia and Hataraku Maou-sama anime in my opinion are better quality than the SnK manga, and are more worthy of the award, especially since they aren't typical shounens, but in the end, it only really matters to the receiver and possibly some of the non-receivers of the award. An award isn't going to effect my opinion, and I'm already over my slight disappointment. So, anyone who's displeased over the results, just go read or watch some of your favorite series and cool down. The results aren't going to have an effect on you, so there's no need to start something over any of these kinds of things. |

I for one do like the 1st op only for the 1:30. I do not like the rest of the song. I think the 2nd op is way better than the first and the whole song is just amazing. |

Glad to see Tsutomu Mizushima get the recognition he deserves. I've been a fan of his for long, long time now. One of the best comedic directors out there right now and he showed with GaruPan that he can step outside of that zone as well and deliver an extremely polished product. |

Every single one of the awards were definitely deserving, great job! I think that, apart from the the series obviously winning the popularity contest by a mile, the biggest reason SnK deserves that title is because it is THE most ambitious anime of the year, and it definitely showed the good and bad aspects of that ambition. Still, it was a vision that was too great to 'wow' everyone. But the important thing is that all of SnK's mistakes are only mistakes that brings down itself, but the successful things it's achieved has made leaps for the industry in many ways. |

Unless of course, the person comments something kind or wants to know something about a certain anime/manga. Thats the thing, even though anyone and everyone can post their opinions in these or any threads, how you post it is also very important. Just as you said, "I dont say it in the nicest ways" and while I can clearly understand that you are just stating your own opinions, at a first glance some of your posts can be very easily misinterpreted, hence why when you post the way you do, it tends to lead to alot of "heated" debates (not the good kind), which ruin the thread for other ppl and sometimes even force the mods to "clean" the thread or worse lock it. If your just irritated that something you like didnt win, I'm sure there are better places to "vent" your feelings. If you go and shout with anger that this anime sucks and this anime is better among a large group of anime fans, the fans who feel otherwise will definitely fight back, which then leads to an argument with both sides shouting and screaming at each other and neither side listening to someone whos trying to be neutral and make sense w/o letting their own opinions get in their way. When this "battle" goes on long enough or goes "too far", obviously all the other fans among the crowd would find it annoying and would ofc prefer it if the ppl "fighting" would just take it somewhere else, especially if neither side is trying to look at it from a perspective beyong their own opinion. Personally, I think adding simple words such as "I", "IMO" or "Personally" would go very far in creating more "clean" debates w/o each side directly "attacking" each other. Ofc it depends on how the person sees your post, and how he/she himself/herself usually posts, but "I dont think/believe xxxx anime deserves this award" and "This xxxx anime doesnt deserve this award" From how I see it, the first sentence makes it much easier to have a nice clean debate on why you think like that if I feel otherwise. While the 2nd one makes it look like you are generalising your opinion or trying to pass off your opinion as a fact, which ofc would make the ppl who feel otherwise angry. After all, no one person can nor has the ability to define an anime's "quality", let alone what it deserves. Also, most ppl tend to forget that animes are primarily a source of entertainment. |

First, I congratulate all the winners. Even though none of my favorites are there, but I respect them. Second, it's only natural for people to get disappointed just because their favorite animes didn't get award. But whining around, dragging the discussion, even giving false assumption with ad hominem, is really irritating. Our opinion didn't matter much. Our favorite anime is just another anime and our opinion is just another opinion. Please understand what I'm saying. |

And if those people are not being nice, then arguments, bickering and flame war become likely. One thing I want to STRESS AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN AND AGAIN is that people who know little about this award would assert that the award is just for popularity not for (however subjectively and emotionally defined) "quality", but there are clear outlines from the award panel about the standard they use to judge for an award. In the best title (TV series or movie) there is the outline stated: 表現手法として、セルアニメーション、クレイアニメーション、3DCGアニメーション、またはそれらを複合的に利用した手法など表現手法は限定しないが、エンターテインメント作品に限る。高い作品性、企画の新規性、オリジナル性、デジタル技術の応用などの新しい試みによる市場創造性を有する作品を特に高く評価する。また、国内制作・海外制作を問わないが、国内の人材育成に寄与する作品をより高く評価する。 The key points that stand out are: - it has to be a product for entertainment. How entertaining is considered an important factor - how much it makes use of various knowhow and appeal of the work (great story, new idea in project execution, originality, state of the art animation technology etc) to *create new market* is a key consideration too. - although foreign works will also be considered, it must have made a substantial contribution to building up talent base in Japan. Even though some of the criteria will translate into "popularity", here they are spelled out clearly in terms that is more than just "it sells well" or "it is popular". Instead a heavy emphasis is placed on linking both popularity and technical achievement (and not just on the animation itself but the whole project). |
So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Lifetime achievement award :D Totally deserving! Shouldn't it be WIT Studios, not Production IG? Or did they co-op on this project, with WIT getting more of the fame? Or Production IG owns WIT? |

@symbv: Do you know what reasons were given for Kotonoha no Niwa or what other movies were considered? I didn't think it was that great so I'm a bit surprised. Sorry if it was already posted somewhere, I didn't want to go through five pages of Karneval and SnK bashing/praising. |
I probably regret this post by now. |

I vehemently disagree with this. Ookami Kodomo should've gotten it. Higashi_no_Kaze said: @symbv: Do you know what reasons were given for Kotonoha no Niwa or what other movies were considered? Kotonoha no Niwa was subpar at best. |

Higashi_no_Kaze said: The standard for the prize given to Kotonoha no Niwa is the same as the one given to Shingeki (which I stated here: http://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=681047&show=80#msg26014567b ) As for the specific reasons to give the Movie Award to this movie, it can be summarized as follows:@symbv: Do you know what reasons were given for Kotonoha no Niwa or what other movies were considered? I didn't think it was that great so I'm a bit surprised. - It brings to us the attention of the everyday beauty so close to us and so easily missed by us. It reminds us to care about what surrounds us: The streets, the landscape, the interaction with people. - The intricate details and tireless effort that Shinkai put into depicting scene after scene of background of nuances of green that contrast with the subtlety of interactions and shifts in feelings during the process of communication for the couple who are trying to find their places is superbly done . As an example, it is hard to say we have seen such beautiful depiction of the rainy season in anime before. - This work is maximizing how beauty can be expressed in anime, and it gives everyone the courage and strength to face tomorrow and the future, and it also tells everyone how beautiful it is for this place that is called Japan. There is no list of shortlisted films. The standard only mentions what works are eligible: Any animation aired between 2012 Sep to2013 Aug As I said before, as much as I would say some other film may be better in my opinion, I also think many films are deserved, and this includes Kotonoha ni Niwa. And this is FAR FROM SUBPAR - the reasons given by the panel are also pretty convincing to me. |

Thanks as always for the insight. I can't argue with the backgrounds, they were definitely superb. I just found without them the story and characters weren't particularly original or exciting, that's all. Not that I disliked it, I was just more impressed by other movies. @itsvero: Ookami Kodomo aired in the middle of 2012 so it wasn't even eligible I guess. I would have loved to see Aura or Berserk III win though. Were short movies like Little Witch Academia also eligible? |
I probably regret this post by now. |
