Whoa. This could actually work out. I'm usually pretty skeptical about live adaptations, but considering its HBO and Del Toro, it seems they are making a serious attempt. The series deserves a quality adaptation. Hopefully they cast actors who can truly capture the characters personalities and arent just some semi-popular actors. |

Yeah HBO has an obsession with awkward sex scenes. One of the few reasons I don't care too much for Game of Thrones. Seeing that its Guillermo del Torro at the helm I am very excited for this adaptation. I absolutely loved Pan's Labyrinth one of my all time favorite movies (I'm a little biased since I'm Spanish). I think Del Torro is perfect for these kinds of adaptations. As long as they are faithful to the story/characters it should turn out great. If HBO gave it a green light they must have one hell of a good script. |

This has potential to be really great, and Monster is one of my favorite shows. I think finding the right person to do Johan will be pretty hard as As he cross dresses as his twin sister in a latter part of the show and is almost impossible to tell them apart |

I figured they could change it up a bit, for example Have Johan simply chat to detective what's his name on the internet and pretend to be Nina, as opposed to actually meeting him in person. |

Dear god am I excited Huge fan of the manga and the anime and although most anime/manga aren't fit for a TV adaption, Monster would definitely be suitable and has the potential to become great and seeing the names of writers and having it broadcasted on HBO only reassures it Another thing other than the next Breaking Bad half season that I will be counting down the days for |

This amuses me as I was recently disappointed that material copies of the english anime had not actually been finished releasing by Viz. Apparently some other Australian studio is releasing them in November, though? Geez, it just angers me that I couldn't get my hands on a full copy even after the anime is getting close to being a decade old. On topic, I am quite excited for this. This director has definitely done some good works, and I hear Pacific Rim is excellent. When I think about this being adapted into an actual good show, my heart pounds. (Un)fortunately for me, my hopes are never high for any adaption, despite the good director. |

I'm equal amounts of excited, scared and skeptical about the news. If they do decide to go forward with this project, they are going to have a bit of trouble with the cast. Assuming they don't whitewash Tenma, the choices will be there. Johan and by extension Nina/Anna will be very difficult to cast though. There aren't many actors that can do the job visually (it's always the hardest part to sell). And here it's very important. How many actors do we know that are blue eyed, handsome and effeminate enough to pass as a woman, and would still remind us of the character from the manga? Not many, if any. We'd have more luck with models. Like this guy: But again, model, not actor. Other than Johan, other difficulties would include the choice in languages used, if they go with english, the episode with the british couple will cease to make sense and will probably be cut off, if they decide to go with german and czech and all the others in between, they will face tough choices with actors. Hopefully they will still shoot in Germany and the Czech Republic. If they ever actually do this and it doesn't suck, it will be a dream come true. |

Hopefully they won't since it would stop making sense. The experiments they made in the East Germany orphanages were licensed by the Ministry, for exemple, something that wouldn't happen in West Germany or Britain. Also, the Baby and a bunch of other people wanted Johan to be the new Hitler, something that would be weird in Britain. So no addaptation there. Even if they went to Germany just to take background shots, and stuff like that I would be happy. CGI can work its magic on the rest. |

Lol at the people who think HBO would make a show that isn't in English. Be real people, if this happens it will be extremely EXTREMELY loosely based on the anime. As in a few names and some of the theming. It wont be a direct adaptation. This is HBO we are talking about. |

Considering how well Hannibal is doing and how HBO is on a roll with their branding, I think it's a good opportunity for them to cash in. Although seeing how much effort they plan to put into adapting it, I'm having a lot of expectations for this. ... now if I could just watch the anime |

The assumption that Just becuz it's made by hollywood = its bad is a stupid thought. Japan makes PLENTY of bad Live Actions. Though that's probably due to the transition from 2D to 3D. However, Monster is fairly realistic and involves Caucasians as the majority of the cast, so that would work out PERFECTLY instead of using Japanese actors(You cannot imagine how many times I banged my head when Thermae Romae was acted by Japanese actors) CtrlShiftC said: GodlyKyon said: Actually, Johan doesn't have to act all that much, since most of his screen shots are just flashes of him giving his signature smile. I mean, it's in the eyes, the smile, the voice and the way he carries himself. I know you didn't watch the anime, and that is why I was sugesting you check the ep 29. It's the one where Johan makes the detective Richard Braun commit suicide. A good ep to watch Johan at work, with sound to make it even better (another reason why I sugested the eng dub, cause by the end I can't take my eyes away from it). My opinion at least. |
