I liked Rika at first but she was really bitchy with Maou. Their entire group was in the wrong to just go into a restaurant and just sit there. Rika's nosiness became annoying when she announced that she was there to basically deliver ~judgment~ on Maou. like wtf first she gossips about him and then she expects him to prove himself to her prejudiced self? Rude and bitchy.

Her rudeness seems to be an Osaka-style estimation against Maou.
I don't like such an attitude, too. But she has her own reason, estimating Maou for her best friend Emi.
I'm sure that she will apologize or praise Maou in next ep.

Except Emi acted totally put upon by her actions, and Rika acted like/implied that she was actually interested in the ~love drama~. And after speaking with Ashiya, Rika stated that her reason for wanting to 'meet' Maou was to judge whether or not he was worth ~networking~ with (basically to see if he was going to be worth tooling later on).

Of that ending, it couldn't have been intentional by Maou, eh? Suzuno's seeing that he's responsible, I just hope it doesn't ruin anything around that setting.

I think so.
Bamboo ornament is an Asian ritual and colorful stripes came from Taoism.
In Taoism, each color links five elements of the universe.
So I think Maou used his magical power with this Taoism altar without thinking.

Holy crap DAT HUGGING SCENE.

Never eat & drink again whilst watching Hataraku, NEVER.

Btw, about Rika & Maou: Maou was kinda pissed about the competition with SFC and MR, and what happens next? A wild Emi's friend appears out of nowhere lecturing him about his attitude. I would have had his same reaction if I were him.

About Maou being impolite was out of character. Just remember that Rika was unnecessarily rude to him because she thought that Maou was all amazing and stuff but he looks so boring.

Also he was having a hard time fighting with Sentucky so he was stressed

'James' is mysterious, but I think that his shades and perfume maybe important hints.

Dunno why people think magic is involved with the loads of customers that come due to Maou's plan. He's just that good. No doubt about it.

I'm pretty sure the magic at the end was some sort of magic being lifted/dispelled, not something that made the customers come to their place. It is rather unnatural that NO customers would be eating there during a festival.

You mean 'lover'?

Gay can also mean happy.

Had to facedesk, freaking awful subs get on my nerves. Unless there's a hidden joke on those line which i did not understood.

Anyway, was good to watch.

I hope you both are right, it's really awkward to read such lines with friends around.

The sub group explained why they used the word.

long before the word "Gay" was used as a word to describe homosexuals it was used as a word to describe someone who is happy.

The Suzuno is using an old dialect because she trained herself to use Japanese from the old Sumurai era. I think "Showa" period is mentioned. So a lot of her words come of as old out of date dialogue. like using gay instead of more modern term.

I'm quite satisfied that there is no malice in the subs' translations. They are merely trying to emphasize the awkwardness of Suzuno's speech patterns.

They probably could have used something like "jubilant" so to avoid PC zealots jumping down their throats. But I'm not worried about it.

I could watch an entire episode of just Emi's facial expressions. They are always so enjoyable to watch. Mostly Tsun, but occasionally dere, they really do make her one of the most expressive animated characters I have seen in a long time. Some illustrators obviously really enjoys drawing her.

Another great episode, makes me sad that it will end this season. Here's hoping for a second one.

Ah, Shizuno at the end. Make that two characters that the illustrators enjoy drawing!

Maou seems to feel rushed because Ms. Kisaki threaten him to transfer Greenland at previous ep., but it is not shown in an easy-to-understand way.
His impatience is shown in sending Ashiya as a spy, but it's not well managed.

I wonder how untruthful it is though (beyond the literal events). He specifically talked about him and Maou being underdogs pit against a larger, more powerful "firm". It's obvious that they see the Church as being the bad guys, but even more interesting is how they view the relationship. As if they were the independent revolutionaries fighting a hopeless war against the establishment. The way he phrased it as them trying to make their way and being crushed makes you wonder if Maou wasn't the one in the right, or at least, more in the right than the Church. The transformation of his attitude towards humans makes more sense if you think about it that way. He probably saw humans as these all-powerful menaces who wouldn't even let him live. It could be that to him, they were the evil overlords and he was the upstart trying to fight against their tyranny.

It's pretty interesting how this is primarily a comedy, but actually has some depth to it rather than it all just being fun and games. I am REALLY hoping for a second season. It deserves one so much.
Let's go bowling.

I believe that last episode had Suzuno explaining how she learned how to speak Japanese from old Japanese historical dramas. These dramas would most likely feature old ways of speaking and not only that but Emi even pointed out that Suzuno was speaking as if she was from the past in the same episode.

So really using the word gay would seem right because its an old way of saying happy rather than todays usage where it's being used to describe homosexuals. I'm sort of shocked that everyone is forgetting about Suzunos old way of speaking especially since it was explained last episode.

I would have liked the conversation between maou and rika this way.

Rika- "There are so many talented people around emi"" I am sure you are not thickheaded as you look"

Maou- "Oh so you see talented people around emi so what good are you anyway you must be one of the most talented to insult me cause you don't look more than a stuck up bitch and I don't see any reason to prove myself to someone who doesn't even about service industry and who is trying to judge other people without showing there own self worth.

How's that shouldn't this type of response be given to characters like rika.
