Well, I see mainly anime adaptations doing their job at boosting sales of manga and novels. No series I care about though, except for SAO which is selling pretty nicely despite current arc being a little bit boring compared to what this series used to be. |

Oh right, I forgot to mention THE most important thing about this chart - To LOVE-Ru: Darkness is almost 300k in just two weeks! ~^__^~ Awesome! One Punch Man is also doing great, they should print more copies when 4th volume is released so it can have respectable 1st week. Back to star of the ranking. Yeah, I know first three vols are over 1M but they're always significantly higher than rest. Actually, it's quite possible that Shingeki will take #2 spot after anime ends. I don't won't to get hyped too much but overtaking Naruto seems realistic if it continues to do so well. Ao got over 0.5M boost in the past thanks to adaptation so why not SnK? Anime changed the order a bit but otherwise is very faithful and we have yet to see amazing scenes from PV so budget shouldn't be a problem. It ranks surprisingly great, has no intention of dropping so hopefully it will also provide boosts to manga for whole of its run. I can't wait for yearly ranking. |

SnK's stroy is very well thought out, Isayama might be even better than Oda at foreshadowing. I really advise everyone to read the manga, it's still quite short (44 chapters, ~11 volumes), just one or two evenings of reading. Art might seem bad at first and while mangaka certainly has some problems (anatomy, sometimes discerning between characters), his sketchy style fits the mood of SnK and he's amazing at depicting emotions. See Sasha's scene for example (it's in ep 03) http://i3.minus.com/ibxSWLkWe7UFxQ.jpg |

Ok, that's a lot of sales for SnK, but it's not like the manga was unheard of before. In fact, the manga has been one of the most popular works out there. Looking at all the volumes increases, especially vol. 1 jump, I would say last week, the anime-boosting-effect only amounted for 23K - 30K gain in sales (discounted for a ballpark of 3K -10K normal weekly gain) Thus under the best scenario, there's only a 2.5% incease in sales due to the anime hype so far. This is not a bad number, but not anything earth-shattering either. For a manga this hugely popular, the effect from anime hype seems minimal. |

Honestly, I've watched the anime before reading the manga. After finishing episode 2, I immediately read the manga and sat all throughout the day trying to catch up on the latest chapter. Maybe because I'm a fan of survival/action/horror genre? Or maybe because the plot pulls me. Every single chapter makes me want to read the next one > < Plus the opening song is just.. majestic. Fits the anime perfectly. The anime adaption is 100% better compared to the new animes *cough* So I'm not surprised that the sales' on fire~ |

And while everyone's attention is turned towards SnK in the manga lists, there are some interesting happenings in the light novel lists as well. SAO instantly becomes the second best selling LN release of the year. Baka to Test is catching up with Index to reclaim the 3rd spot. (by the figures we have of course) Hataraku maou-sama vol 8 exceeds the total listed sales of vol 7 (acquired over 2 weeks) by 20% in its first week. Meanwhile vols 1 & 2 both manage to rank. Neither vol 2 or 3 of Biblia rank for the first time in ages. Shousetsu Senbon-Zakura ranks for the first time in week 6? Sounds more likely that it was just missing from the ranks before. Aooni ranks for the first time in over a month and picks up more than 30k sales, including this week's. Just goes to show how much we miss. |

I just checked Kuroko no Basuke - it aired at same time as Shinkegi, just last year. All of the volumes got at least 350k boost thanks to anime. Yeah, I counted everything and if you subtract ones that ranked in top100 volumes from yearly total we get 361 k per each of 12 remaining volumes. What's more, none* of Kuroko volumes ranked in April-May period. Yes, thresholds (21-30k) were higher because we were only getting top30 of volumes but in Shingeki's case we get two** volumes above 30k, five in top30 and all of them are above 23k. If one of them manages to rank next week**, we should be expecting at the very least 0.4M boost from anime. *I'm not counting freshly released vol 17 because it would rank even without anime. **I'm obviously excluding vol 10 for reason stated above. For anyone interested: Apr 9 - 15 Apr 16 - 22 Apr 23 - 29 You can easily find other weeks by copying thread subject and altering dates. Yearly 2012 P.S. Just for clarification - anime isn't responsible for all of the manga sales boost, just 70-90%, didn't mention it earlier to make post more readable. After all, people pick up manga all the time, even crazy popular hits such as One Piece. We don't see it because it's somewhere in hundreds every week, not tens of thousands. |

Sounds more likely that it was just missing from the ranks before. Aooni ranks for the first time in over a month and picks up more than 30k sales, including this week's. Just goes to show how much we miss. AoOni ranked on its release week |
There is no such thing as shit taste. Only idiots who think everyone should have the same taste as they do. |

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Is Shingeki no Kyoujin really that good? ... Or has it just been WAYYYYYY too long since a seinen action anime came out that didn't fall back on ecchi/fanservice/moe? Might have to go read it ASAP ... but never felt it was as good as some other seinen series out there like Berserk, or Dorehedoro or Gantz or Zetman (list goes on and on) .. might have to rethink that. |

symbv said: What do you mean by "past 12 months" and "hit 1 million mark in sales"?Not sure about how consistently the sales over the series, but recently I caught a glimpse of a list containing the top selling manga from the 3 biggest publishers (Shueisha, Shogakugan and Kodansha) in the past 12 months and titles that hit 1 million mark in sales include: Shueisha: One Piece, Naruto, Hunter x Hunter, Kimi ni Todoke, with Blue Exorcist being close but not yet breach 1 million Shogakukan: Silver Spoon Kodansha: Vagabond, Shingeki no Kyojin, with Saint Oniisan being very close but not yet reach 1 million Yearly ranking of Fiscal 2012 covered 49 weeks of Silver Spoon volume 2 and it only managed to sell 813,989. I think it's possible only for v1 to breach 1M - it sold 561,466 in fiscal 2012 and 175,941 in first two weeks so that leaves at least 263k which have to be covered in 17 weeks - it is possible, thresholds were higher in 2011 because we had just top30. Of course, that would mean 12 months are counted since release date of first volume. It skews the number in Gin no Saji's favor compared to other manga we only know from yearly list but I believe your source can be trusted. Still, I really doubt any other volume managed to break 1M in 12 months. Vol 3 could theoretically make it if it was counted since release date but I just checked and it never ranked after Fiscal 2012 (710,387 then) ended despite thresholds being as low as 15-20k. Seeing how vol 3 (7 months) sold just 40k more than vol 4 (four months) in fiscal 2012 we can see that vast majority of sales comes from first few months. Back in February vol6 of Silver Spoon was still below 700k (684k in five weeks, it stopped ranking later on). Really, the only volume which could sell 1M in 12 months could be first one and just barely. That's not what I would consider 1M club, other volumes should be able to achieve this number as well. Vagabond - hard to say it's ongoing. Volumes 32 and 33 weren't even able to achieve 600k in 2010 - maybe that's because Oricon didn't count volumes which ranked low? Still, they shouldn't get close to 1M Shingeki no Kyojin - only first three volumes are above 1M, fourth one still needs 83k despite being available for sale for 53 weeks. If they meant total sales of whole series, there should be much more titles over 1M. I'm confused. |
