I have a similar question, and hopefully this doesn't derail the thread or anything..

But how do you people feel about a lack of gore?

The Tiaga gif avatar made me think of this one, so thank you jimbob1141 lol. But anime with tsundere characters, although it's not exclusive to tsunderes, tend to have a lot of physical violence, specifically with the main protagonist being the victim.

But this violence is usually done for comedy, and the "gore" is kept to a minimum, replacing things like fractured bones, facial bruising, split lips, black eyes, concussions, internal bleeding, etc, with cartoony bandages, bumps, and hand prints.

The affect is, in my opinion, distasteful, as it creates a facetious outlook on physical domestic abuse. But I want to know your opinions. Thoughts?

Dat piece of crap can't be called anime.

I welcome gore and blood if its a tasteful incorporation into the story. I don't think it should be the centerpiece of the plot though.

Believe me I have. I watched the whole damn thing.

I just put it on my dropped list, because that is where this fucking cruel piece of shit belongs. Disgusting show.

This is actually the on the opposite spectrum of my question. Excessive violence and gore for the sake of laughs.

I really disliked the series, but a character standed out.

Binkan-san, the salaryman.

It is the only moment I laughed on that anime.

There's definitely a lot more to Shigurui than the gore.

It doesn't bother me unless that's the only thing the show has to offer. A good example would be Hellsing where it just banked on gratuitous violence and gore and suffered everywhere else.

I think you are referring to the part where

Other than that part in the third episode, the rest of Urotsukidoji's violent scene cannot match the extreme and insane levels in Violent Jack and Genocyber. XD

I remember that one scene in Bakemonogatari

That hurt me to watch. And it was just downright disheartening that half the comments for that episode were "LOL" or the like.

It was an interesting scene artistically, I'll give it that. But not funny in the slightest.

I can't say I'm very fond of extreme gore. When it comes to intestines and other internal organs hanging/falling out, it's a bit too much for me. Not saying I can't watch it, but it isn't something I'll watch for personal enjoyment.

Though these days, they're pretty rare. Most recent I can think of would probably be Blood C and I believe Muv Luv has some pretty intense gore.

Paul pretty much summed up my thoughts. I'm not a huge fan of it, but if it's done well, it does add to the overall atmosphere. But if it's just sort of overdone and excessive, I tend to dislike it.

I watched a version of Urotsukidoji USA licensed release where it's not "perfectly" uncensored since they use some mild degree of "color altering" method to slightly cover the genitals. I wonder if the "completely" uncensored version existed? :(

Also, since you mentioned Violent Jack. I wonder why OVA2 is not consider as one of those Gory "Hentai" titles like Urotsukidoji made in the 80s/90s?

Hell. There's even an uncensored Hong Kong VCD licensed release of Violent Jack OVA2 where they totally remove the mosaic in some scene.
I want to find out this Hong Kong licensed version, but no luck. :(

It doesn't bother me. One of my favorite manga is Dorohedoro, after all.

Depending on how it's executed it can make a supposedly serious show seem kind of cheap and gimmicky, and/or unintentionally funny (like the end of Blood C) though. General rule of thumb IMO is it should usually be quick, brutal, and not be irrelevantly tacked on.

Yeah those foggy genitals is the uncensored I do believe it was a loop hole to get around those obnoxious genitalia laws. Yeah Violence Jack two was pretty close to being hentai in fact i recall it some how getting away with womans crotches. Still I enjoyed the manga more because Blues death in the manga was totally wtf! Also I like how the men were portrayed as beast when they raped the women.

Yeah I hate those obnoxious censorship law too. I only recently get to understand the reason behind these "Japanese genital censorships" after reading this article.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Censorship_in_Japan
Never understand why Japanese are so keen on this whole censorship law when Japan is where the biggest animated porn industry lies and they're not afraid to have adult contents in their cartoons.

By the way. I haven't read the Go Nagai's Violent Jack manga yet. Is the manga also censored like in its anime adaptation?

I agree. I like the old dark bloody violent classics from 80s/90s too. We seem to have plenty of those cute "Moe-gore" shows like Elfen Lied, Pycho Pass, Haruhi etc made in the 2000s which to me, get really annoying, stupid and pretentious.

With all my mild sociopathy morbid curiosity, I love gore - but not when it's totally ludicrous. A normal punch to the head isn't going to decapitate, and a normal sword blow won't cut a person in half. There has to be a good reason for a gibfest. Gore for gore's sake is just boring, and rude.

Gore for the sake of gore isn't really worth anything. I like Berserk for the story and character depth. Every now and then I like watching Guts take out 100 guys, but that's not what makes that paticular anime for me. Another violent show I like is Afro Samurai, but I like it for the style mainly, not just blood and body parts. However, I hate Shigurui Death Frenzy, a show that makes you as uncomfortable as possible. So overall gore isn't a bad thing, but it shouldn't make an anime what it is.

Gore makes everything better. I like it in some movies too, but I can't say that I'd watch an anime just for it.

I remember my parents were horrified by Happy Tree Friends and in my mind I was like: "Must resist the urge of showing then Genocyber..."

There's also a downside to it. People might think it's dangerous and blame a certain anime for some random bloody event that might happen. Every time there is a shootout in some USA highschool people rush to blame it on music, movies etc. I wonder if anime was ever used like this in Japan.
