Unless I'm interrupted by a 3rd party, I normally complete my episodes without pause.
Some shows that have more mystery, or just a confusing plot, I'll pause for a minute or two and try to evaluate certain lines of the show before advancing. I'm kinda slow sometimes so the occasional "what the fuck did I watch, and what does it mean?" sessions are needed

I tend to pause episodes here and there, depending on the show and how much it has my attention. I'll stop because I'm in the middle of a good conversation on a messenger or skype, or I'll stop to check something on facebook since I always keep it tabbed up when my browser is minimized. It's taken me as long as an hour and a half before for one lone episode just because I got distracted by conversations. =P

I don't see a need to pause unless i'm interrupted by unforeseen circumstances.
It destroys the momentum of the episode, sometimes the climatic buildup.
I take screenshots after i finish the episode.
Also, to those who pause often while watching anime, i suggest you rid that habit ASAP, it spoils your anime watching experience.

A few times, but usually in animes where there are confusing parts I pause it to re-read (or fully read) what they are saying.

A couple of times maybe, but usually only when I'm moving away from my PC.
I usually try to watch animes in one smooth motion, and then rewatch if necessary. Helps me understand better than pause and think, for some reason...

I have yet to have it spoil my experience.

I do. I take like 40 minutes for an episode sometimes.

Mostly because I like to have MAL open and type my reactions out in the episode section.

It takes me over an hour to get through one episode of Ghost Hound. I barely get through 3 minutes before I'm bored and look up something on Youtube. I think I've been stuck on this show for a month now, and I still have 7 episodes left.

Just wondering.

I do it really often. It can take me 40 to sometimes an hour to finish one episode. Whenever someone says something in anime that's vague or not exactly clear, I have a habit of thinking of a couple possibilities what that someone could had meant when he said that and this makes me having to pause the show and think about a single sentence for sometimes more than 3 to 5 minutes or more. Anyone else do this? Just wondering. Also I get annoyed if it takes me more than an hour to finish one episode.

Are you fucking slow of something, a bit soft in the head maybe?
HOW MANY TIMES DID YOU READ THE ABOVE SENTENCE BEFORE YOU REALIZED I WAS INSULTING YOU?

yeah i only usually pause if i have to check facebook or whatever or need toilet breaks, and the i usually take 5-10mins before starting a new episode anyway. Movies I probably pause more because I need food and such.

The only time when I have to pause watching anime is when:
1. Toilet
2. Eat (Sometime I will eat and watch anime but doesn't happen quite often as it's hard for me to eat and watch at the same time.)
3. Have to do some errands
4. When someone is talking to me
5. Heard a VA that I recognized and decided to check.
6. Bored of the anime and decides to take a break. (mostly walking around the house)

I pause watching anime when I'm too worried about what is going to happen to a character when they are in a certain scary situation.

For ex (possible spoilers):

The new anime 22/7, ep 3 when she saw her mother. It was hard to watch her struggle after that. I paused often.

Re:Zero when our mc was desperate to earn everyone's trust in the mansion to the point of insanity. That was hard to watch.

New anime smile on the runway. When her heels broke, I paused. I was like, "oh no" and struggled to continue. I finished though

Kind of funny. I'm more afraid of the above and don't care when characters get their arms/heads cut off or watching Gorey or explicit scenes.

I pause and rewind a bunch of times during moments when I miss something that a character said. It’s actually super frustrating.

Not pausing if I can help it, breaks the immersion. Certainly not during a single episode.
Planned binge watching gets only interrupted by food runs and toilet breaks <.<

I think if you have to pause an episode once or twice cause you missed something or you need to process what a character said is normal, especially for psychological or mystery anime. For me, I have ADHD, so I think it would drive me crazy because I already have a pretty short attention span. I think I might just stop watching or take a break from watching after each episode xD.

Well I'm an idiot. So whenever I'm watching a show if a character feels off or I want to know more I pause it, then dive down an hr+ long rabbit hole on the wiki and looking at every attached character, then relationships, family members, other arcs. By the end of it I have spoiled everything and go back to watching the show all grumpy. 10/10 Do suggest.

I'm pausing anime right now! I get distracted way too easily.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I pause only if I get distracted by something or someone comes in to talk to me. Otherwise I actually do a good job not pausing

Movies are different though usually I watch it in increments throughout the day because I can’t sit still long enough

Yeah it does kind of feel tiring sometimes to watch whole movies in one sitting. At some point in the film I can feel my attention wear off because of how long i have been watching ,especially if it's something i'm not that invested in.

When there's an intense scene and I have to take a deep breath, when I can't see because of the tears, when I know something bad it's gonna happen and I have to prepare myself or take a moment to digest what I saw

It just depends on how invested I am in it. If it is boring and I am not so into it I will pause it quite a few times. If it is something I am really into then I can watch multiple episodes without pausing.

Depends!! I had to pause every couple minutes when watching Code Geass, because (no joke) the tension made me think I was having a heart attack multiple times. I couldn't watch more than one episode a day, it was amazing. I've also had to pause during shows like Death Parade (specifically at the end) because I was unable to breathe due to crying. The only real other reasons I pause are if I'm highly embarrassed by a scene or I missed subtitles (on the few times I watch subs).

The times I pause, however, are infrequent and only because of very specific circumstances.
