Would've given a lot to see the tables turned on Near when he thought he had Light. Surprising everyone with a move that had him come out on top. Because this was a boring ending compared to the scheming and intriguing up until now.

nice way to end a series, Light getting outsmarted by one of L's prodigies is a good ending in my opinion. Good series;

Watched this a few years ago and still annoyed with how it ended. Light should of won, or at least lost of his own mistakes, instead of Mikami making the mistake.

il be honest the anime and manga of how the ended it was just downright terrible, in fact the last 11 episodes from when L dies to the end was terrible and i cant accept it

1 they made light puss out like a bitch in both manga and anime
2 that lil basterd nears was only in it for 10 episodes
3 there was so many unanswered questions
4 i cant accept it

Shit ending; very unsatisfying.

Sad? Yeah... because a murderer getting what he deserves after being exposed is "sad". Man, please. Seeing Light turn into a screaming, hopeless fag was the best part.

This is one one of those animes that makes me wonder on and on about how the ending might of been different.

What if, Light had escaped, or successfully killed N?

It might be dull to see Light kill all of his enemies, then take over the world, but I wonder if he would rule the world as a dictator, or bring about the "golden age"

Really wished that Light would have won, really sad to see him die there at the end. All his mistakes finally caught up to him. That moment when he was running after he got shot and was having flashes of himself in school...that was some emotional shit right there. Great series though, Light is one of the greatest MC's ever.

9/10.

Ultimately, I was pretty let down by the ending. I loved the entire first part of the show, but after L's death, it took a totally different direction that I was entirely happy with. If Light had to lose, I wanted it to have been L that got him - he was an equal to Light in almost all respects and it would have been much more fitting. On a similar note, I completely hated when Near came out with the "you're nothing but a crazy serial killer" line (granted, he wasn't entirely off-base). I felt that L, while still being Light's enemy, might have better understood why he did it all and respected how well he played the game instead of dismissing him completely out of hand like that.

I had actually been rooting for Light to win, no matter how evil he was becoming, since L's death. I forget who said it (it may have been Light himself), but the line about the person who was doing the killings for the purpose of making the world a better place, at the cost of their own soul, was right on the mark. Because Light WAS making some progress towards creating a peaceful world, despite his methods, but lost himself in the process.

Overall though, I loved this show. The plot, the pacing (mostly), the interplay between the characters and the cat and mouse game of logic between them all...really, really glad I didn't ignore it just because it was popular.

Always the same old taste, just new injury
Well I'll wear the claws if you'd like that

Despite some parts of the series I felt were obvious plot holes (maybe 1 out of every 5 episodes), I did for the most part enjoy the Death Note anime, 4/5.

An anime hasn't made me feel so strongly for the characters and events taking place in it for a long time.

Definitely am happy that Kira did not win in the end. Kira was much too prideful and things always always always seemed to go his way. He preached "justice", but he killed and found expendable those with the strongest sense of justice (Raye Penbar, Soichiro Yagami, L, Watari, etc.)

Had Light resisted his "Kira" persona to some extent, he could have continued killing criminals and people who "deserved death" in more of a safer, calculated way. Instead Light was overcome by his own infamous reputation, soon to be famous, and allowed himself to start believing that he would be the "god of the new world".

Light lost touch with humanity. Kira overtook Light. As such I found it hard to emotionally back that type of character while watching Death Note. This isn't to say I was a fan of Near or Mello as characters either. L was awesome and he wasn't afraid to face down Kira, starting from scratch. He put his life on the line for justice, real justice, and eventually the loss of his life was not in vain. The saddest part of the anime in my opinion was when L took the time to wash Light/Kira's feet. That scene summed up who L was on the inside: Kind, friendly, and humble. Kira did not understand these concepts, and that was his downfall.

As for everyone wishing/hoping that Kira would win, meh.

Everyone at points in their life secretly wishes that someone would just die, or thinks what they would do with something similar to a Death Note. However despite even my own secret thoughts, or hypothetically if I came into contact with a Death Note, I'd like to think that I would destroy that power. Real might and courage come from improving the world through humane deeds, not taking shortcuts towards fixing your problems (i.e. using a gun, knife, Death Note, etc.).

Yeah, my post could be interpreted as me sitting on a high horse or what not, but I think it's the easy thing to root for a character like Kira in this anime series. Kira fell into his power, he didn't work for it. That being said, my favorite character was Soichiro Yagami. He worked diligently and hard his entire life to improve his surroundings for others and his family. He was not extremely skilled in any certain area of expertise, but he made do with what he had and held an impeccable sense of morality. He was the man.

I didn't really like the ending. I think Death Note is perfectly build to have the evil win for once. Didn't really like the whole second part after L died, I think L's death was the perfect end, just showing the creation of Light's perfect world after that.

I doesn't really make sense how it was that easy to break into a bank and breaking the safe AND faking the Death Note really perfect without anyone knowing about it. You can't just make a perfect copy of a hand written book with thousands of different names in only one fucking night.
Near clearly did not deserve the win, and surpassing L is ridiculous, he is not even close to L.

I think Light's fault was to let Misa forget about the Death Note. When he wrote the message, I thought he'd let her kill everyone who worked for L, since his father was dead he didn't care about them anyway. I think Near didn't know about Light back then, so he probably would have been cleared, and together as a pair with Misa he could have done more.

His extrem insanity wasn't really cool either, not that it's unusual, but it's not that accurate for Light. He could have written the names on his piece of the Death Note in secret and not with such an obvious move. At the point where Mikami killed himself, for a moment I still thought that Light would win with an epic move while using his brains, but he only ran away and ended up being killed by Ryuk. :/

And the poor Misa is left behind and only could do suicide since her only reason to live died together with Light. She should have had a bigger role, not only Light's wife that he only sees once a week or so.. There the story writer could have thought of something better. :P

Well, Death Note still gets a 10, but there are many things I had perfered over the ones that were actually done. At least it was very unique.
If I had to rate the different parts, then I think it would be:

Light vs L: 10/10
Light vs Near/Mello: 7.5/10

Overall 9/10.

Episode 1-25 standing alone would be a better story.

Light is one of the worst kind of criminal and protagonist I've ever watched. It is hard to understand people who sympathize with his role or death. If he was an idiot or at most had been your average character I would understand him/his motives and that would justify his actions in my perspective.

He's talented with bright future, smart, understanding, handsome, and sorrounded with beautiful girls who worship him. Some might claim that those reasons may have been enough or subjective.
However..

If he had acted as the character he had been portrayed as it's clear for me to tell that he contradicts with himself. He had to know that evil is the basis which discern good. So when this evil fades, so does your perception of good(or vice versa), until the time comes when you discern neither. When you discern neither, what your justice? Throughout the story some people gave him clues about this view but he was ignorant until the very end. He didn't once assume that a criminal might have been falsely verdicted once while blindly filling pages with criminals names and faces he sees on the TV. Also, he killed or collaborated killing innocent people.

IHMO, he was a fool who was in awe of his power until the very end and thats why I can't simply sympathize with him. I believe he didnt have a sense of justice. If he survived after the end.. one time in the future he would see himself as the worst criminal against his ideals if he really had some.

One more thing, I did really expect him to kill Amane before the end. I really liked her and she spiced up the story alot for me. Maybe he wanted to keep his promise with Rin and thats the only positive thing I have observed about him if thats the case(unless I missed some dialogues along the lines).

Light, if you hadnt picked up up that notebook you already had the power to bring justice to world. I could see you being a marvelous detective or politician or maybe working along with L,M and N cracking cases one after another.
But what a waste.. you accept the role of sacrificial lamb of not going to hell or heaven, deluding and contradicting yourself till the very end.

wait a minute, i dont understand.
how does having the name of takada in the real notebook prove which notebook was a fake?
under the scrutiny it was under, the fake notebook couldnt have takadas name in it, they only found out the previous night, and the pages were replaced before that, mikami would instantly know that the one he had to finish the job was fake, even if they switched it out, not even light knew that particular detail
and the whole forged an entire notebook in 1 night, that was accurate down to the microscopic level (we see just that happen in several shots, its checked every night under a microscope) was my main problem with this episode. it just doesnt work like that, not in 1 night, a bit of an asspull, they could have done it better

nevertheless, this episode was up there with pre episode 27 for me, it was a lot better than 27-36 for me, the setup was intense, and it made you really feel for light when he died, the part where he saw L before his death was poetically fitting.

brilliant series/10

hmm nice ending. Still though. He had it coming. Since like he started killing others for other reasons than Justice. Like what is said in the other topic. Probably the incident he killed the fake L.

I don't blame Matsuda. Him being so loyal and even agreeing w Kira but KLight did other things for himself instead of what Kira stood for. Maybe he should have trusted Misa more since she didn't make hardly a mistake as TKira did.

Although I don't understand how the public would react from this. I'd figure it would cause some outrage or something.

In all it was good. I think a 7 would be good for this. Although it can seem to have a better score there were times I thought of things left out, or they could have done or whatever. Good concept and such. I still think a 7 would be fine though.

Is does make me wonder what will happen to Light now since he won't go to heaven or hell. Will he become a Shin? Also what happened to the remaining life force? I guess it went to Ryuk.

Seems like Misa got the best deal of it all by the end.

1st half of series were about JUSTICE killing off criminals (remember lights technically didnt kill L) but on 2nd half he just started killing people who were in his way and seemed very injustice.....

anyways the ending was simply perfect the way the plot was heading into......10/10 /clapclap

Of course, good will always wins over evil. I really thought that this anime would have had an evil ending which is unique. It's ironic how Near calls Light a mass murderer, yet he himself has done nothing to stop and deter criminals from killing/harming innocent people.

I thought they're gonna counter and counter..
Near+Mello ≠ L or even surpassing L

So that the last moment of Kira, he's so desperate..
His calculating wasn't right..

Wow, there is another Light @_@
Hmm.. My thought that Ryuk, he's the bad guy
Why he dropped that note, if he didn't.. then Death Note wouldn't exist XD

That peaceful but sad ending
I just want horror/thriller genre with happy ending :(

And

Overall 8/10

Didn't expected this ending,i was almost sure thata Light would win..
And i'm right they only lost by the Mimaki's fault?
And what does that mean when Misa is leaving the city in the train? that part was very strange.
I don't know if this is bad or good, but i think what Light have done (by killing all criminals, and bad people...) was totally right ;)

1) Near is 15 years old
2) He didn't ''beat'' Light
3) Mikami did a mistake writing Takada's name in the notebook, that's how Gevanni discovered the real hidden notebook.
4) And if you don't understand the ending, you're just dumb. The plot was never about Light becoming the god and justice of the world, it was to show how much power can change a person. You can clearly see the difference in his character after he got rid off L, in the end Near was correct saying ''You're just a serial killer''. However what I loved most about the show, was when Light was having regrets for using the notebook, he thought how different his life would of been if he hadn't picked it up 5 years ago. Also the last thing he was in his life was a mirage of L, like he wanted to apologize him for everything he had done.

People just need to see deeper, this ain't just a show of ''battle of wits''

Well, people... You are stupid.
It was not Near that won, it was Near and Mello together. Alone, Near would be a challenge, but Light would have gotten him, the same way as he did with L. It was absolutely as Near said, Light surpass both Near and Mello, but them standing together would be really tough..though I do believe that Light would have won if Mikami hadn't screwed up...

I absolutely love the ending, though I knew that Light would probably loose. But it was how it was done. Watching Light freaking out, going crazy, to me that just meant that he too is just a person, after all. What horrible pressure it must be, living like that.
Mikami too, it was not fun at all when he killed himself, being totally obsessed with Kira and seing his "God" die must have been devastating. But don't you see that he did it to save Kira? I mean.. He got all the attention, so that Light had the opportunity to escape.
And when Ryuk seems to have some feelings himself, in the end, when he's writing Light's name in the Note. Though I have to read the rest of the manga too, seems like there's a slightly different ending there..?

What I don't understand though, is when Light sees himself walking past him in the end. It is himself, right? Some in here says it's L.. It being L would mean that L was really behind all of it. It being Light could mean as he just sees himself as the person he was before he got the note, which would absolutelt make sense.
Though Light is Kira, and has murdered lots of people, he does it for the purpose of good. But then it drives him quite mad at the end. But we see his feelings and.. I just think it's absolutely beautiful!!
Hahaha, the murderer has feelings..and so do I..I love him :P

Argh, I understand Misa and Takada so much... But then again, the fact that I love Light so much would probably result in me ending up dead :P

I think the entire plot comes to the fact that Kira is trying to use something evil to make good. Could that ever work? And it just leaves us wondering if the world's really hopeless...

I honestly believe that even though Light failed in becoming the God of his new world, he did the world some good; even if he was doing it in the wrong way. He will always be remembered as Kira and there will always be people that will continue to worship him after his death. With that in mind, maybe he did become a God, but in a obscure way.

As for the events leading to his death, it was a cliche that everyone saw coming; he had become obsessed with killing Nate River, it was foreshadowed throughout the Manga and Anime, his actions moved from cleansing the world to doing everything in his power to kill one person. It can be understood why he went insane when Nate didn't die, imagine something that you've become obsessed over nearly becoming a reality and then all chance of it happening is taken away. However, I don't think it should've been Matsuda who shot him, he wasn't a strong enough character to do it; Aizawa would've been a better choice as he was the one who suspected Light the most.

I wanted Light to lose. But not this way. I wasn't happy with the explanation. The whole episode gave me a weird feeling. Like it just wasn't quite right. Like it could have been done much better.
Oh well. I gave the finale a "liked it" score. The feeling's still there, though.

Oh, I know! A scene with L for example. That would have been awesome. Or something that would have made it more personal.
I expected at least some kind of an emotional climax with characters I cared about (L, Misa, Light's dad, more Matsuda). There was a montage at the very end... but I didn't like it. It was way too cold.

I can't really say if this series will be among my favorites. It probably won't. But maybe it will.

Kind of speechless right now. Not sure what to say. I knew this was going to happen since I read the manga a long time ago.

It would be interesting to see an alternate ending - maybe one where Light wins. Although, this one seems more realistic, I'd love to see both endings.

It was a fun show, so 8/10 probably would my final score. Just like Code Geass, the thrill and strategies were boss and the plot was really intense and good. However, it won't ever be my favourite anime since it relies too much on plot twists and not on overall character development, atmosphere and those things I care about a bit more.

Seeing one of the most unlikable, overpowered, and absurdly lucky asshole main characters I've ever witnessed in fiction get one upped in the same fashion he had done for 36 previous episodes was quite satisfying. Especially since I actually liked Near for the most part, he wasn't like L but his deductions seemed slightly more logical.

I thought the first 6 episodes of this show were pretty amazing, the 7th left a bad taste in mouth but I didn't really think much of it. Then the show just got so over the top at times, but it was still quite entertaining...until Ryuk left for the first time. From that point on I really felt the show got worse and worse, but at least it was paced well enough I guess.

Kinda expected Light to lose, but definitely not in this respect. Sure, I can copy one full notebook worth of writings in just 1 day. I can even mimic it in such detail that the original writer can't even tell the difference under a microscope! Also, a normal detective is also able to slip past the bank's security system, plus the guards and also easily breaks into the safe with no surveillance cameras or whatsoever.

Not only that, what happened to the original plan of Near's when he proposed the meeting date on the 28th weeks ago? Light predicted Near's plan, which is what happened on the 28th as he showed no signs of being surprised. So what was Near's plan? Just stand there like an idiot to be killed??? The inclusion of the replacement of the fake notebook is definitely out of place since that happened 2 days before the meeting. It's absurd to call for a meeting at a date when you have no plan at all. UNLESS, his plan is 'Yeah, wait till 26th, Mello will kidnap Takada, blablabla and we'll discover about a fake notebook. Sure, everything makes total sense. In the end, everything became inconsistent with the characters just for the sake of coming to this particular conclusion. I loved the series, but for a series based on battle of the wits, this is definitely a seriously dumb ending.

Ending totally riund the whole anime for me I wish I never watched it. And it could be masterpiece if they just didn't have to fu*k the ending.
The real world is past the virtual world is future.

The beginning of the series was like what got me hooked on this series after ep 25 it started gettiing a little worse. Don't get me wrong the series was good to me from start to finish but I feel the story was a lot stronger in the beginning. Then again there was some episodes at the start that weren't great and the later half had some awesome episodes so I don't know it was a great series to me just had some things here and there. 9/10 IMO
