Actually, they want their theories to be wrong. Why else would they be so interested in it - just to prove what they already think to believe is right? Stephen hawking is betting $100 they don't find a higgs boson - the particle which most physicists believe is responsible for mass and should be discovered by the LHC.
It's rather ubiquitous among the community that if they don't find it or find new particles, that they would be far more excited and delighted than if they had just found and only found a higgs boson.

Well, what's the point of proving it wrong. that would only hinder humans in further developing themselves ; )
I'd be much cooler of course if you could prove god.

That's not how science works. They're not going out of their way to prove it wrong, they're going to take the experimental evidence and see if it supports their theories. If it doesn't, they'll have backup theories. If it doesn't support backup theories, they'll come up with new theories. The Large Hadron Collider was built without any application in mind, they just wanted to find out stuff, so it won't hinder humans at all. Applications for the new knowledge they find may arise, but they mostly just want to find out how the universe works.

Most scientists are more interested in coming up with completely new theories. Physicists in particular are quite a selfish bunch =P so they don't want to be going out to prove the theories of others, but coming up with their own. They're also fascinated with new experimental evidence, so they'd be much more interested in something new that completely blows their theories out of the water. As I said, this machine wasn't built with any application for the human race in mind. It was built mostly to satisfy physicists.

I can understand the excitement of making your own theory after the last one collapsed, yet if one pillar in string theory falls, don't all the other ones go with it too?
And anyway, i cant think of anything more interesting than proving string theory right.

I dont really care about things like higgs boson because that would only prove the existence of things that we already know exist.

I dont really care about things like higgs boson because that would only prove the existence of things that we already know exist.

Actually they don't know the Higgs Boson exists because it's still just a theory. Something else could be responsible for mass and that's why they're doing these experiments.

I don't really get what you mean about the pillars, because if a pillar of string theory falls, why would it matter if the others go with it too? Like I said, they have other backup theories and they can also make new ones. String theory is very appealing as a theory of everything, but it wouldn't be as fun if it was that easy. I think it's very likely that they'll prove supersymmetry, and the existence of other dimensions that dilute the magnitude of gravity with the LHC, but it won't actually prove String theory. Some aspects of string theory just can't be proved right or wrong experimentally, which I think is a bit too convenient.

well in that case, we presume it exists. alot of things are theories just becasue we have no way to actually prove it XD right?

What i meant to say about the pillars is that if one thing in string theory isn't right, wouldn't that mean everything else is wrong too, since it's all intertwined?

Yes, there are some theories that state there are as many as eleven dimensions!

Also, I am going to assume the 'speed of light' mentioned is the 300,000 KPH possible when light is passed through a vacuum, as the speed of light is variable. It goes half as fast when passed through diamond, as slow as a bicycle when passed through sodium at absolute zero and was fairly recently (2000) brought to a complete standstill when passed through a Bose Einstein condensate of rubidium (this was achieved at Harvard). It is highly likely I have misremembered something here, so do go and look into it yourselves instead of trusting me blindly!

That's right. It's not possible to send any matter or information at 100% speed of light, but we can get pretty close now.

There are however things that can travel faster than light.

I feel like a nerd getting all excited about this, but having other people around feeling the same is very comforting. Thanks Flibbertigibbet!

Didn't Einstein say nothing is faster than light?

I think this puny experiment does nothing more than a collision and some small effects, very small. -.- You will see something less interesting than a pink poney jumping around. A hard-on collider never means the end of the world.

Make 2 planets collide at the speed of light and see what happens.
Science these days ... pathetic.

Uuh not really. Nothing can accelerate to a speed greater than that of light, because it takes an infinite amount of energy. And that's pretty complicated to find. Also, no information can move faster than it.

If something already did move at a speed greater than the speed of light (important distinction: it's the speed of light nothing can accelerate to a faster speed than. Light itself often is slower, or - gasp - at quantum fluctuation levels, faster, but that's okay as it doesn't have mass).

I think at least. I hope someone who knows corrects me if I'm wrong (hai thar, Sakinho).

Yeah, that's about it. The speed of light is actually an average. Light can travel at any speed, as long as it averages out c in relatively large periods of time. I don't know why or how that works, but I read that Richard Feynman would prove it to attendees of some of his lectures, just to freak them out =p That and light not travelling in straight lines. I should look it up sometime.

The part I do know that sort of proves the speed of light is an average is when you consider electromagnetic waves in media other than vaccum. Light doesn't become faster or slower in a sense when going through materials. What happens is that photons can interact with matter as it passes though the medium, and in those interactions it can form quasiparticles such as excitons (formed when photons interact with electrons in the material), which are short lived and decay after a while into its original constituents, releasing the captured photon. This process, while very fast, takes time nonetheless, and the frequency with which it occurs alters to different extents the average speed of light, making it look slower. I admit I'm shaky on that sort of stuff, it's still gonna take 3 or 4 years before I take any proper solid state physics courses >_>

Also, I don't think there is any evidence for the existence of tachyons (particles which would travel faster than c). For starters, such a property would require the existence of imaginary-valued masses.
