Do you use your anime list’s Tags field? If so, what for? Anyone doing anything useful, interesting, original, or creative with it?

Me, I like to credit which fansubber / resubber I chose for each anime. That way, when I’m recommending or getting anime for another (happens very often, especially with my anime-crazy sister and cousins), or when I get my rewatch cravings, I’ll quickly know which version I enjoyed. It’s also fun to flick through my list and see which groups I’ve liked the most in my anime lifetime. And to keep in mind the ones I’m most indebted to for donations and whatnot.

I usually use it for personal notes. To know what anime to watch next. I usually check out the synopsis, the image on the anime and then my tags.

I tend to use "shit" a lot in it.

"This shit is good, shit is badass, yeah badass shit"

I don't know why, but I can't avoid the word "shit".

Mostly for the rating I gave it, to make a differnce between the multiple 9's and 10's in my list(for example, Gunslinger girl has a 9.2 and TTGL has a 8.6, but I gave both a 9 in the MAL rating system).

Sometimes I also use it to point out what I liked about it, or why I dropped it.

I use tags to show my thoughts on anime/manga. Sometimes they act as notes to myself, like "marathon this", "stocked at local library" etc. I know very well you can add comments to each entry in your lists, but you have to click "more" to see them, and I'd rather have all my comments viewable straight away. It would be great if you could have a comments column and a tags column, that way people would be more inclined to use the tag column for descriptive purposes, as in stating the genre, demographic, production company etc.

I just write a small "note"/"comment" , if you can call it that.

(and "DUB", if I saw it or rewatched it in english)

Examples:

»ef - a tale of memories - DUB, Euphoric Field

»Hagure Yuusha no Estetica - Akatsuki, Being A Boss

»Yuru Yuri ♪♪ - Yuri Yuri 2, Kyoukorin

I like it being bulky like that.

Plus, those tags don't send you anywhere. Commenting also makes it easier to identify how the Anime fairs or how it might fair.

I put comments there as well. There are a tons of threads (comment on etc) where it is very useful to see more than just a score in someone's list. You can explain or give some general thoughts. Pretty useful to be able to have more info on your list for anyone else and yourself. Who cares that it looks bulky...

I put comments there. I don't understand why I would ever find use out of tagging my anime with keywords. And I know there is a comment section if you click the "more" or whatever, but that's a hassle. I actually think the comments look good on my list.

Why you people using it for things that already exist… That must be so hard to click on "more".

I don't use tags because it serves no purpose for organization since you can't click on it to make a somewhat logical order. IDK for example I'd use it for demographic then I click on it and then all shounen shit are assemble together… But no you can't. So it's useless to me.

I put my own little comments there about it. Like for all the airing anime, I have them all divided into categories of "shit, ok, good, great" and tag each airing anime with whichever one describes it. For my completed anime it's usually just a short comment about the anime itself and/or the score I gave it. I also give myself limits to make sure the comment only takes up 2 - 3 lines in my list. (For my completed anime that is.)

I don't really see the point of using the tags for typing in the genres and other info. You have the MAL page for that.

There is something called ctrl + f. All you have to do is type the tag and scroll down. Yeah, it doesn't organize it for you but can't have it all. Can't be that much harder than clicking 'more'.

Thanks for the suggestion but that isn't my point. Tags in list doesn't work how they should while they do on anime/manga/novel pages, when they have tags. For example tags in Lastfm works perfectly for both artist/music/album pages and our own list/personal tags. It's not asking too much to have something called tags working like tags.

If not for being able to attract Google bots with my list tag mini-reviews, I probably wouldn't bother using MAL anymore. I'd feel like I'd wasted my time if I made final episode post-reviews for everything, and I'd get far too annoyed with myself if I spent time typing out actual reviews. So, attempting to be impossibly concise by fitting the ENTIRITY of my thoughts into the tiniest of paragraphs on my lists - often spending 30+ mins trying to shorten my rambling to fit - is a kind of non-rambly go-between, for me.

In short: I derive vast amounts of pleasure from enlightening my legion of followers via list tag reviewing. Once you've watched/read enough, ten numbers just aren't enough to go around--especially when you try not to watch bad anime and end up not using the lowest numbers. Outlining my thoughts alongside the numbers helps, in this regard.

I don't like writing reviews, but I do tend to have some thoughts on what I watch/read. So I put those thoughts in my tags column. It's great to look back and see what I thought of a certain anime and why I rated it the way I did. And to the 'bulky' comment, I personally like being able to quickly spot an anime that I had a lot of thoughts on by its entry's size. Not to mention, I use MAL Updater for my list, not the less aesthetically appealing web page. In MALU, I can just search my whole list instantly for tags, and they'll appear right in front of me. For instance, I've tagged all of the mahou shoujo anime in my list with "Mahou Shoujo". So I type that in MALU's search and all of my mahou shoujo anime come up. Fast, efficient, and a good reason to use tags.
