I just looked up yaoi and it seems like there has to be explicit sexual stuff for it to be considered yaoi? Correct me if I'm wrong, but if that's the case I can understand why it would turn most straight males away (still, I would not say enjoying it automatically makes you gay or bi). |

| I don't have any experience with yuri (as a girl, that's sort of the reason) but full-on yaoi is mostly plotless or unrealistic in terms of relationships, even more so than the worst shoujo cliches (imo, please don't eat me alive anyone). Those are obviously marketed towards females, like how harems are mainly towards guys. I personally like Shounen-Ai, since it's less about butt-sex and more focused on the actual relationships part, usually (see Seven Days). So, basically, it can be possible for straight males to like BL and vice versa, though the enjoyment relies heavily on the actual plot and character relationships, and not all of the sexual crap. |
| The more secure you are in yourself and less attached you are a perceived identity based on a cultural judgement the more likely you are to be able to see the story beyond the gender relationships and enjoy it. As noted above, true Yaoi and Yuri verge on porno and, as such, are usually plotless and pointless. I have little interest in either. I have seen some darn good shounen-ai and shoujo-ai though. And yes, Yaoi is written to appeal to women. Most gay men have little interest in it. |

Basically this. I pretty much like a good romance not matter the genders involved. Just recently I watched Fuyu no Semi which is marked as yaoi but there was no really explicit sex scenes. Instead it was a melancholic romance story about two men stuck on different sides of a war. It was an often bitter tale of love, politics and discrimination. It had a nice historical backdrop and actually had a lot of interesting historical context. The OVA was a rushed at times and could have used more time to develop the romance and characters but overall it was a nice watch. In general the problem with shounen-ai and yaoi is the uke/seme dynamic. It is downright annoying especially when it's paired with rough forced sex scenes. However, there are some decent romances out there and even non-extreme uke/seme can be interesting but those aren't all that common. I'm not very experienced with the genre but that's what I've observed from my forays into it. So yeah, as I straight male I can find something to enjoy in shounen-ai/yaoi but it has to be something with an actual story to it, not shit like Papa to Kiss or Maiden Rose. |

Obviously there are some plain hentai ones, just like hentai anime in general, but there also others that have good story with touching/sweet/cute moments. Plus, subtle yaoi/yuri-ness is pretty common place in many anime. It's just another aspect of the story. |

It's really quite obvious, all depends on the person and depends on the anime. Though most yaoi and yuri are only created with one point in mind, to be a series focusing on a gay relationship, person, or unfortunately (for some), often hentai fan service. And quite honestly I don't understand why a straight person would want to bother with that outside of curiosity maybe even after questioning their own sexuality. Well I do know their is a fanbase of females who have gotten in to yaoi for whatever reason, I guess because they think it's cute? A series featuring a good story, plot, and characters that just happens to feature a gay couple could easily entertain an open minded straight person. Unfortunately I don't know of an anime that might qualify - I'd bet there is a good, well rounded yuri title floating around I don't know of. |

| I am really impressed by the number of "real men" reporting in, the ones secure enough in their own sexuality not to fear being tainted by any hint of "gayness". Kudos. And to the person stating "gays don't enjoy straight romance," you are wrong, wrong, wrong. They aren't likely to be interested in straight or lesbian porn but that is something totally different. Anyone curious or interested in an excellent Yaoi title, take time to see Fuyu no Semi. There are a few fairly graphic scenes but overall, it is a beautifully done bit of historical drama that happens to involve two very masculine men who are drawn to each other. Most other Yaoi titles are mediocre to worthless. |

| Well there are quite a few anime I have watched that were Shounen Ai, and I'm a straight male. Very little consider Death Note to be Shounen Ai, but I'm not sure about that. I mean sure, That scene with L drying off Light was sort of a hint towards it, but come on it's hardly anything of the sort. There are a few Shounen Ai that have great plot out there that I'd like to watch, but I don't want people to think I'm gay for watching it. I'm into women 100%, no doubt about it. It's just some Shounen Ai have great plot, and if you don't watch it then you might be missing out on one of the best things ever created. There are plenty of anime targeted towards straight men that feature Yaoi/Shounen Ai in them, so I don't see the problem. If I get labeled as gay for watching such things then so be it, because gay means happy. I'm a happy straight male, who loves his anime. The only things I won't watch are porno Yaoi or Shounen Ai, I just want a normal Shounen Ai( eg. fighting, battle, mecha, etc.) or Yaoi (eg. Slice of Life, Science Fiction, Horror, etc). |

| An anime has yaoi/yuri undertones doesn't mean it's a canon yaoi/yuri anime, though there may be a lot yaoi/yuri doujinshi(I just think of Death Note and Mahou Shoujo Madoka). You can ship a couple, or not. It's up to you. If you don't, you can also enjoy the show without yaoi/yuri undertones. But for those canon yaoi/yuri shows, there are few straight fans into them, as far as I'm concerned. Also, I think this is not associated with sexual orientation too much, after all, the real world is different from 2D world. |
