Ah the beauty of the "first" girl trope. Here's the problem with it, via TVTropes: it's sometimes hard to identify who the "real" first girl is.

Yes Kanna knew Kaito first, but she was not the FIRST introduced female love interest. Even if Ichika never showed a love interest at first for Kaito, she was most definitely set up as the FIRST girl for his affections. So in that sense, it isn't breaking the norm.

Also, Ichika is the main female protagonist AND she's an alien. For most anime (like at least 95%), the main female ALWAYS wins. Add on to it that she fits the alien/magical girl trope, and her chances increase even further. So, once again, pairing her up with Kaito isn't breaking any new ground.

I don't really care who the "first" girl is. Kanna, though, has been set up as the clear underdog, and as suspected here, most definite loser in getting Kaito's affections. Even if Kanna was the first "first" girl, the highly overused trope of new girl (Ichika) coming and stealing the main male protagonist (Kaito) away happens again. I think that is a major reason some support her. If she did in fact win, it would be extremely unconventional and break from the norm.

Personality wise, Ichika has been given much more airtime to develop, as is the case with a main character. We still don't really know much about her besides being an alien and that she's apparently cute and/or hot. So there's no force behind her character besides being the primary love interest, which automatically makes her "personality" better just by the amount of attention the spotlight brings.

Kanna, as a side character, isn't given that luxury and has to do what she can with the time given. Albeit she hasn't been the most proactive character in getting her feelings across to Kaito, you can tell she is hesitant. Episode 5 really added to her personality by showing that she is saddened that someone could come into Kaito's life so easily and have such an effect on him. Towards the end of that episode, it also showed how much she values Kaito as a friend and doesn't want to lose that.

What if the two characters were switched? Would everyone gravitate to Ichika, the childhood friend, just because she has a better "personality" and boobs. If Kanna, the alien, was given more constructive airtime to properly portray her personality, would she have so many haters? Besides personality, I think character archetypes (new girl vs childhood friend) play heavily into the factions.

So, Ichika being with Kaito really isn't anything new if you look at it. The reason I support Kanna, besides making it fun on the forums, is because I want something different. If it happens, I'll be laughing.

Well, I'm not "supporting" KannaXKaito - who Kaito ends up with hasn't been a concern for me. The "first girl" trope just doesn't factor in. Bottom line, I just like Kanna, and I don't want to see her unhappy. (shrug)

I see a big difference, but we all see something different even though we might be looking at the same thing. (I'm not looking at her as a potential match for Kaito, so maybe that has something to do with it.)

have to say best episode yet. Remon and minami teaming up was hilarious.

We finally see the Mio and Tetsuro pairing coming along. I am feeling sorry for kanna because at this point she might be the only one left alone.

And the ending, shit hits the fan!!

Would still support Ichika.....She is prettier than Kanna, and i just like her character better. The way they made Kanna's shorthair reminds me too much of a tomboy look, besides Kaito and Ichika is much more cuter :3. If Kanna DID end up getting more screen time (Ichika was my first pick for Kaito from the first episode) then it wouldn't be as great a series for me. Romance is everything for me in an anime, and if things don't go the way i want, then i absolutely will not watch.

That's why i stopped watching that anime...forgot what it was called, where the highschooler/middleschooler was a really famous adult novelist, and the main character he's set up with from the beginning is some music genius or something.....Yea....I hate the way they designed her looks, so dropping that pos anime.

I would say Kaito and Kanna have had their cute moments together. Look at this episode when they had the same reaction to being paired up for the test of courage. So cute!

Also looks are not the only thing that matter in a character to me. I look at characters and the way the carry themselves, the way they talk, how they react to things, BACK STORY, etc. For me, Kanna has just been overall a deeper character than Ichika. She doesn't have to rely on being an alien to drive her development (ie Ichika's reactions to new things - meant to make you swoon). Kanna is a much more subtle character than Ichika, pereonality wise. Yes she can be annoying, but I get a feeling of something more underlying in her character. Ichika's character is defined by WHAT she is, while Kanna is defined by WHO she is.

Obviously both of our female suitresses have yet to have their back stories revealed. Why did Kanna fall in love with Kaito, and how? What about Ichika's upbringing and motivations, which I find the most intriguing element yet to be revealed. All these things play into a well rounded character and I hope these elements are revealed. I have a feeling Ichika will get all of the attention though :(

Anyways I'll reserve judgement until the end on which character I enjoy more. But at this point I can't help but cheer for Kanna and her tomboy self. Tomboys rock!

And you were referring to Nodame Cantabile, which is much less a romance show than it is a story about facing and overcoming your fears. GREAT MUSIC too. I though Nodame was ridiculously cute, but that played more into her mannerisms and reactions, a vital part for me in characterization

on point. I'm on team Kanna too, but not for her to end up with Kaito, I'm just on her side in terms of who I like as a character better. She's imperfect in a way that's actually realistic. There's really nothing wrong with Ichika or Mio other than their wierd backstory's, and because of that, I can't seem to like them (even though I still like them as characters haha) as much as Kanna. Imperfections are beautful, people.

What a heart racing episode. I really can't wait for the next episode, now that they know, how will it all play out? Looks like Manami and Lemon are old acquaintances which makes me really question how old Lemon is and why she still goes to High School. Also I love Mio's new personality and looks and hope to see some more development between her and Ishigaki.

As for Kanna and Kai, I hope she finally gets the message that Kai does not like her. I know it was kinda harsh when Kai ran to help Ichika and left her behind but Kai truly does like her and was able to spring into action right when he heard her scream (which I admire.)

It looks like it's the second time Kai has been healed . As for people saying it's the second time he "died", we're not even sure yet if he really was dead both those times. He could of just been badly injured. Still, maybe it will cause that weird grid thing that appeared on his neck and forehead to show up again. I wonder what that is and why it appears. Could be deadly. Hopefully they explain it soon. Goddamn why do they have to torture us like this!!

Okay, does anyone know anything about the song that plays before the ending in every episode? Will it be in the OST or something?

Now that I got that out of the way, good episode. Ending was epic, imo. Sucks for Kanna though, at this rate, Kaito will end up with Ichika, Tetsurou with Mio, and Kanna will be left by herself.

pffttt, there was a plot all along. Just simple, but well executed. I don't really care for complex plots just for the sake of it being complex (some exceptions). Maybe to some, this anime can get boring because character interactions are a bit realistic, but that's the beauty of it!

Interesting episode. The SOS thing was kind of oddly timed and really unnatural to the story. I think the anime in general is just too short to have so much development in such a short amount of time. Emotional development wise, it was great. Loved the ending, too. Hope there's lots of questions and answers for next week. Looking forward to the next!

There was certainly a full episode's worth of story progression!
Though like many others, I worry that it will end too fast.
This is one of the animes that deserves a full 26 episode run.
Or at least a guaranteed squeal in the near future at the very least.

This episode was super painful for me. I didn't want to watch anymore after Kaito left Kanna. I really cried. I couldn't hold it in.
I love Kanna, so much. The only couple I want in this whole series is Kanna x Tetsuro.

I want Kaito to be alone forever. . Same thing with Takatsuki. I hate Kaito so much for leaving Kanna! I want to hit him so badly. He's so stupid and naive and annoying. Takatsuki is the same! The couple in any series is always someone like them. I want Kanna to have a chance!!!!!

Mio's just Mio... I feel bad for her but I can't relate to her like with Kanna. I just hope she doesn't get with Tetsuro because Kanna is meant to be with him.

I just hated the last parts of the episode. I wanted to slap Kaito for running away. And the whole fight scene was breaking my heart because Kaito shouldn't be with Takatsuki. He doesn't deserve anyone if he's able to break Kanna's heart like that without remorse. Sure, I understand that he doesn't like Kanna. THEN TELL HER THAT STRAIGHT UP. I hate when guys think that they're doing us a favor if they don't tell us that they don't reciprocate our love. I find it so annoying! Sure I'll be sad for a while, but it's worse then seeing the guy you love slowly fall more in love with another girl while not even knowing whether he likes us or them. I hate it. Hate it. Hate it.
Kaito should've explained to Kanna his feelings and apologized to her properly. I hate Kaito so much. So so so much.
I want him to be forever alone.
I'm not angry at Takatsuki, but I still find her horrible because she also knows that Kanna loves Kaito. She should have some feeling!!! She didn't even think once about that during any romantic time between her and him..

This is just annoying me. But because it hurts me so much like this, it shows that the show is able to bring out my emotions. And I'm happy for that.
I'm just hoping this show ends with Kanna x Tetsuro and no other couples.

5/5 - I hated what happened, but because I became so passionate, it shows how awesome the show portrays things.

Lemon is at it trolling again. Even asking Tetsurou's sister to help. "I'm forever seventeen". I don't even think she's joking about that. xD

The test of courage wasn't only one of courage, but also to test relationships, hehe. I actually predicted for Ichika to walk in on Kaito and Kanna, but Kaito running away was even more sad for Kanna. Their relationships are even more tense now and Kanna pretty much doesn't have a chance anymore, but I'm still rooting for her dammit =(

Near the end we finally saw some more alien technology from Ichika's civilization. Kaito saw everything, so the gang is prone to know about Ichika being an alien next episode.

Kaito should've explained to Kanna his feelings and apologized to her properly. I hate Kaito so much. So so so much.

I'm not angry at Takatsuki, but I still find her horrible because she also knows that Kanna loves Kaito. She should have some feeling!!! She didn't even think once about that during any romantic time between her and him..

If I remember correctly, the only clue Kaito has as to Kanna's feelings is hearsay from Tetsurou. Because of this, I don't blame him for not saying a word about her feelings; since he doesn't know for sure--and even if he has a strong feeling it's true--the doubt of its truth that comes from her NOT confessing is enough to keep him silent (or, at least, hesitant to speak first) on the matter.

Why? Because it's awfully presumptuous to tell a girl you don't reciprocate her feelings when you don't know they're there, for sure (i.e., you've only heard that the person in question likes you, but haven't heard from the person, themselves). At best (in the case of being wrong), it'd mean an awkward moment; at worst, it could come across as conceit.

To be honest, that is one of the reasons (the main reason, actually) why I do not like Kanna. She didn't even beat around the bush with a sledgehammer, like some characters are apt to do (which is also annoying)--she kept her feelings to herself. Then Ichika came into the picture, and Kanna began to wax possessive/jealous over a guy that has no further connection to her than friendship--not even knowledge that she likes him. She chose to act this way instead of stepping her game up and taking preemptive action before a potential rival (Ichika, who moved pretty slowly, BTW) could. Another reason that's directly related to this is the fact that she's ignoring someone else (Tetsurou) to play this masochistic game.

In addition, I don't Ichika had/has any obligation to mind Kanna's feelings for Kaito (though she felt she did, from what I remember). Kanna is a rival for Kaito's heart, the same way Ichika is for Kanna. Why should she, if Kanna herself feels no such obligation?

EDIT: I forgot to add that I do like Ichika most. lol But Lemon is awesome. "Fu fu fu~" never gets old, and I really look forward to seeing what she's about in this anime.

And I do think that if anyone's going to alienate (lol nice one, whoever said it--editing window doesn't let me see) Ichika, it's going to be Kanna, and in a very mean/rude way. She strikes me as the type.

Mio's just Mio... I feel bad for her but I can't relate to her like with Kanna. I just hope she doesn't get with Tetsuro because Kanna is meant to be with him.

I just hated the last parts of the episode. I wanted to slap Kaito for running away. And the whole fight scene was breaking my heart because Kaito shouldn't be with Takatsuki. He doesn't deserve anyone if he's able to break Kanna's heart like that without remorse. Sure, I understand that he doesn't like Kanna. THEN TELL HER THAT STRAIGHT UP. I hate when guys think that they're doing us a favor if they don't tell us that they don't reciprocate our love. I find it so annoying! This is just annoying me. But because it hurts me so much like this, it shows that the show is able to bring out my emotions. And I'm happy for that.
I'm just hoping this show ends with Kanna x Tetsuro and no other couples.

Beautifully said. You do bring up a great point with Ichika's knowledge of Kanna's feelings. The way the issue was introduced with her listening on to Tetsurou's and Kaito's conversation, you would think it would have some effect on her. It did, for all of 5 seconds when she thought about it while taking a bath (some of you were paying attention to other things ;) . After that, the issue was completely swept under the rug.

I thought it would most definitely come up during the Okinawa trip, but our new characters for that arc again distracted us away from the issue. Especially during the botched kiss scene, Ichika's "だめ (dame=no)" could have meant MANY things, but I fear it had little to do with knowing Kanna's feelings. But maybe it did :)

As to who should reveal to who who feels what about who (god awful sentence), I still think it falls on Kaito's shoulders. Kanna has much more at stake here and is hesitant to handle the situation. If Kaito wasn't so dense in some ways (he's pretty sharp when it comes to our resident alien), he would notice how hard Kanna's been crushing on him. He doesn't even have that excuse anymore now that it has been affirmed TWICE that Kanna likes him. What does Kaito have to lose? A friend he doesn't spend nearly enough time with (more like a friend's friend) and someone who he doesn't care for in the same sense as a random girl that entered his life all but a few weeks ago. And she likes killing him...talk about Stockholm Syndrome! I would respect Kaito a lot more if he would just get it out of the way. Yes, Kanna will be miserable for a bit, but she can move on.

But really, these characters are just portrayals coming from our well-trusted, somewhat sadistic directing/writing team. The reasons they want to drag this out are beyond me, but probably:
1. It takes trolls to create a troll - basically they're trolling Kanna fans, every other character is getting attention except our blue-haired heroine. Even when our Remon Troll pairs up Kanna/Kaito, things go wrong.
2. They want to have a showdown between Ichika and Kanna BEFORE Kaito makes his "final" decision (first decision doesn't count ;)
3. They are setting up Kanna as the winner or at least fallback girl. The similarities between her and Kaito are off the charts (not really): both delusional and they have the same reaction to things like they did this episode. Also, it's not like Kaito completely ignores Kanna - he did get a shot of her in her yukata during the festival.

But let's see what happens to our beloved alien next episode...

to Kaito at exactly the point where he left Kanna and started running. You don't fucking leave a girl like that alone in the dark! WTF is wrong with you Kaito. I can understand his love for Ichika, but he should have grabbed Kanna's hand at least and lead her into where he was going.

The guy just showed how much of a jerk he was there. WTF would he do if Kanna got in shit because he left her there alone? Guy knows fuck all of being responsible, he does all in love for one girl but ignores one he made good memories off for one girl? Makes no sense since he did exactly that at that time. Ignoring all of Kanna and just focusing on Ichika.

So in that I can understand your feelings and pain. Me too I got a piss off mood at that part.

.__. why all the hate on Kai? He did what he had to do to help the person he truly loves. I think that is a truly good trait of him to sorta leap without looking and act on pure instinct right when he heard the scream. I know it was kinda bad that he sorta ignored Kanna's feelings but that's exactly what Kanna's been doing to Ishigaki. All in all why would you want to force a one sided relationship. This episode and last clearly shows he does not want to be with Kanna.
