My rating system is something like this:

10: Fantastic anime, great story, great characters/devlopment. Has me always wanting to know what's going to happen next. Likely to be a top favorite for a good period of time.
9: Really great anime with very good characters and story, followed rather closely and possibly not a ten because of a poor ending.
8: Very good anime that kept me hooked but wasn't quite enough there for it to go higher.
7: This is usually my average score any anime that wasn't bad and wasn't great usually ends up here. Most decent anime fitting in my top genres.
6: Thought it would be better but didn't quite work for me, wasn't bad, just not really my thing.
5: I watched it... but didn't really care for it. Usually poor story/poor character development.
4 and under: Don't have any as of yet, an anime that ends up here would most likely be from a genre I don't typically watch that didn't do anything for me.

When I rate an anime I try and look at several things. Style, story, characters and length. If an anime has awesome characters but a not so great story then obviously it dosen't get a 10. Probably a 6 or 7. So you kinda just have to sit and think about what was good in the anime and what was bad and then base your rating off that.

you get an impression of the anime after watching it...
i just use this vague memory to rate it... the feeling I had after i finished watching it.
i do not really like this way... but there is really no other way unless you go see every detail and analyze everything like a professionist.

just go with your instinct and try to take as much as possible when watching... i hate when you are not concentrated in the anime, like having 2 anime open at the same time 8D

How I rate stuff:

5 - Uncool.
6 - Fine / kinda mediocre.
7 - Nice.
8 - Great.
9 - Amazing.
10 - Perfect.

Kinda inaccurate but ahh well >.<

10-9: Perfect enough to be my favorites. I would watch over and over. Scores of 9 only have a few small details I don't like in one or so episodes, but doesn't ruin anything overall.

8: Great anime overall. Usually something I don't like, a character or few, a boring episode or slow start.

7: Good. A few episodes were either boring or filler. I also tend to give this to anime with bad endings.

6-5: Average anime all around.

4-1 Bad anime in my opinion. By this point I would of dropped it. If it's a movie or OVA, I would finished the anime however.

10 - No complaints at all.. Perfect
9 - Little bits that I didn't like but overall an excellent anime
8- Great anime overall, but I don't enjoy some episodes (fillers, etc.)
7- It's either one of the good animes w/c I hated the ending or just an overall decent anime
6-4 Didn't really feel the anime..
3-1 Bad.. Just plain bad..

Some people rate the anime objectively and give it the score they think it deserves, but I prefer to rate it subjectively using my own opinions. I think this makes my anime list more personal, less conforming with others. But for written in-depth reviews, I recommend scoring objectively, since other people are going to take it more seriously. I also scored the one anime I made a review on objectively.

Aside from that, I'm usually a rather lenient scorer; I gave most of the anime on my list either an 8, 9, or10. There were also times when I was tempted to make a score one point higher or lower.

i rate it how much i liked the anime, i tried rating it on how much they deserve on how well it was made and story and all that but then i realized i would have to change up my list a lot and well didn't really wanna do it, so basically i rate it on how much i liked and sometimes add story and animation to the mix, the only series i've given a 10 are the two GITS seasons personal favorites.... then i usually go around 7, 8, 9, and 5, 6 if i really struggled watching it... example for me is kanon is great anime but not something i personally thought wow this is amazing i said it's pretty good so i gave it a 8 i could have given it a 9 but because i didn't think it was great i gave it a 8 and then there are the action anime which most of the time don't have a clear story or a very strong story but i found to be more enjoyable and that will also get an 8 but yeah that's just me

First Sig built from scratch 2nd overall^^^

I think I'm stricter than most people in my judgements. I have only 2 anime rated 10 out of 85 series, and just a day ago it was only 1.

5 or below - Did I really finish this series? *sickened*

6 - It almost was interesting... but it wasn't.

7 - Mediocre. Entertaining enough to finish, but the impression wears off quickly.

8 - Great. A solid show that did most things right and was very enjoyable.

9 - Amazing. This is what anime should aspire to be, the shows that make me remember why I watch anime in the first place.

10 - Life changing. Anime that doesn't follow a genre but *defines* one. This kind of series makes me look back at my list and lower other scores because little else can compare to the pinnacle of its achievement.

It's a little harsh, isn't it? But I think that shows of truly amazing qualities need that highest spot to seperate them from the merely awesome.

My ratings are completely subjective.I don't care if X anime got rave reviews or that Y anime was hated by everyone and their mothers.I drop a lot of shows, if they don't interest me I see no reason in watching it, not matter how well done the show might have been.

It is entertainment after all, if I'm not being entertained or at the very least amused, why force myself through it?

Thats a good way to go about things, but in my case because I'm a graduate of film and media studies, I'm compelled to just about watch anything thats been hyped, praised, awarded, etc, etc. Biggest example is when I found out sola was voted Japan's most popular anime of 2007, so I forced myself to watch it all the way. >_< (gave it a lovely review as payback)

Ahh Film and Media studies, now I see where all your reviewing comes from haha :) good stuff

e- and if there is one thing I am not completely subjective about, is definitely animation.I said this in my profile, but I'm pretty fond of animation/animators so I know a bit about the craft and love distinguishing good from bad animation and all the different styles.

Well, I try to keep the 10s few.

For me it's quite the same problem as for the topic creator: Kanon is the anime I enjoyed the most with the next one being quite distant. So I should give everything else a max. of 9.
But that's not clever so I just keep telling myself that I would rate it 11 and then I don't have that problem anymore.

9s are also very great animes.
8s are still pretty good ones.

7 is the border.

Below 7 the boring stuff is starting.

I think I have never rated anything below 5, because I drop bad stuff and I NEVER rate dropped animes. I think I don't have the right to rate an anime I haven't finished. That's not fair. It makes me really angry to see ppl who drop an anime after episode 2 and give it a 1 or 2.

I give a 10 to only the very best, the ones where that really stick with me after I've finished watching them. I don't give out a 9 very easily either. 8 means I quite enjoyed it. 6 or 7 means it was fairly good, but I felt it needed work. If I find a series to be rather average then it gets a 5. Anything below that is in danger of being dropped (like how I got sick and tired of Gantz recently).

I give the worst anime on my list a 1, and the best a 10. everything else is rated based on the two extremities, although i occaisionally bump some up or down based on my general enjoyment.

Sometimes, rewatches cause me to rerate some shows, especially shows that require more japanese culture to understand that i may not have understood last year yet understand now... like, lucky star

10: Absolutely grand plot. Grand as in epic plot scope & character variations, the kind you see in a war show. My 10s have no room for less than that. Too bad it's still way spacious up there.
9: a great plot AND I must be hooked to it until the very end. Believe it or not, I only pick the shows people hail as magnificent, but somehow when it reaches the middle of the episode I always find myself either counting the time left or secretly praying the dull thing be over soon. Which happens to 90% of the shows I pick.
8: doesn't have a plot as great as a 9, but must be enjoyable to some extent. And is one with high production value.
7: decent plot, fairly high production value. Not what I would bother for a rewatch though.
6: a pretty fuckup plot, but still acceptable.
5-4: unacceptably fuckup plot.
3-1: My attention never land near shits.

When it comes to me rating anime, I consider myself harsh rating series. Anything I watch but I thought that there were flaws or can't be enjoyed by someone else gets a 7 in my book. If it gets a 8 or 9, then I feel that they are better than the average series.

PS: I RARELY give out 10s. If I do give a 10, then I think it is the best and I think most people that are new fans in anime would enjoy it.

I usually rate by comparing the anime I want to rate with others that I have already rated. For me, a 6 usually denotes that the anime is acceptable/alright/barely enjoyable. A 7 would thus mean the anime is not bad. 8 = pretty good, and so on.
5 or below for me indicates different levels of 'badness'. 5 is usually simply boring and not enjoyable. 1 = absolutely frustration-inducing.

I borrowed my rating system from an anime site I don't really use that much anymore but they suggested rating like this:

10 Masterpiece, exquisite beyond words
9 Excellent, should be in anyone's collection
8 Very Good, don't miss it
7 Good, worth seeing
6 Decent, I didn't lose my time
5 So-so, it didn't really grab my attention
4 Not really good, but not a total waste either
3 Weak, I wish I'd done something better with my time
2 Bad, not really recommended
1 Worst ever, maybe useful as a sadistic torture device

I'm very stingy with 10s. I've yet to give one out - but I've not watched nearly as many series as most people on MAL either. But I always ask myself after a series "Can I honestly say that this series was perfect and I wouldn't change a thing about it?" If I can catch myself thinking "This series would be perfect if only they ..." then personally I can't give it a 10. I've been close a couple times - Death Note (bringing Mello and Near into the story made me go from 10 to 9) and Ergo Proxy were very close for me. But I'm fully confident that I will see a series one day as I watch more and more anime that I will say "I wouldn't change a thing about it - perfect 10."

On the flip side of that I don't think I've given out anything lower than a 6 so far. But I chalk that up to the fact that almost every series I watch is based on recommendations from a couple friends of mine that have just about seen them all. This also causes everything I watch to end up getting crowded between 6 and 9 though and I kind of end up wishing for the ability to give half points like 9.5 or 8.5. On a positive note though having a bunch of great anime in my plan to watch list isn't exactly a bad problem to have.

I myself think that the overall rating can only be considered as mere hints instead of trustable references. The reason is really simple: The rating habits differ a lot.
For example, I just watch the anime or read the manga and do an overall rating and don't really care what the different aspects suggested here at MAL are, because sometimes it doesn't matter if there are good animations and musics when the story is nonsense. Some people may think that the animations are the most important part and will judge different. ^^
Nonetheless, there is a certain radius where you can justify your different interpretations of the rating system, but some users here don't seem to think about theirs. Come on, whats the fucking point of having a 1-10 rating system and only giving 8,9 and 10 points while saying everything below this is crap?! O_o

I'm not selfish when it comes to rating. My scale is from 5-10.

10 - Masterpiece : A very rare rating from me. All aspects are epic. Plot Progression, Character Development, Introductions, Ending, and how interesting it is. The ending is the trigger for a rating of 10. If I'm deeply moved by the ending and all aspects are okay, I'll unhesitantly give 10. For the comedy series, if almost all of the episodes made me laugh, I can give it a 10 (Seto no Hanayome and FMP Fumoffu are in)

9 - Superior : I give this to an anime which only lacks one aspect. For example, all went well and the ending is good but still lacks to be called epic. I also give a 9 even if all of the aspects are not epic but ended beautifully that deeply moved me(eg. Chrno Crusade)

8 - Average : I give this rating if some of the aspect lacks the magnitude. This are the series that started well, progressed well, then ended well(eg. Air, Shakugan no Shana Second, Nagasarete Airantou, Rozen Maiden). This are the anime that I describe as average. I always give 8 if it progressed well then ended badly (eg. NHK)

7 - So-so : This are the series that I often give no reaction or response. This didn't have an excellent progression or character development(eg. Shakugan no Shana S1, Mahou Shoujo Lyrical Nanoha S1, Chobits) . For good progressions, the ending really ended for the worse.

6 - Bad : I rarely give this. I often give this to special/OVA (eg. School Days Magical Kokoro-chan). Unlike 7, the story's progression is really bad. The concept is bad. Character development is also bad. (eg. Ragnarok Animation)

5 - Worse : For now, I haven't given a 5 yet. This are the series that I have finished till the end and till the end I'm saying "I should've dropped this anime earlier." This are the series that has escaped from being dropped because I gave the anime a chance to redeem itself.

4 and below - Unimaginably Bad : This are the series that I didn't finish and dropped early on.(eg. Eureka 7) I may give something like this to Completed Series if I really got pissed off.

For me, a 10 or Masterpiece is just a personal opinion on the anime like everything else. I don't think you really need to justify it if you love it and think it deserves that rating. A lot of people put shows that they started off with as masterpieces b/c they helped get them into anime and shape their opinions and tastes from then on.

On the same hand, if I give something a low score, it doesn't mean I don't like it. The low score usually means that I found a lot of flaws in the material and it could have been done better somehow. I never use a 10 to mean a series is perfect, none of them really are in my opinion. FMA comes close, but thats it.

I really like DBZ & Chrono Crusade, but there were a lot of flaws that I thought were in the show that dragged them down from the 9's & 10's I wanted to give them.

So in summary for me, the scores don't really reflect how much I enjoyed the show, so much as how well I believed the show was executed.

When i watched Kanokon I really enjoyed it but it isnt as good as Koi Kaze f.ex, but I still gave it 9, but in common to Koi Kaze its like nothing.
I cant compare Kanokon and Gurren Laggan it would be wrong but just because i gave it the same rating dosent mean I think the other was better, it two different generes aswell and is hard to compare.

I actually rate anime the same way as the review criteria. Plot, Character, Art/Animation, Sound/Music, and Enjoyment all from a scale of 1-10. Then I average those 5 categories together to get a final rating.

It bothers me that I can't rate on a .5 scale on this site, since so many series I've rated fall in between. In the end, it's usually the Enjoyment rating that makes me decide to either round up or down.

And I don't consider 10's to be perfect or masterpieces, but the closest thing to it. That's why I see a 10 as incredibly awesome or outstanding. All series, even those that I've given a 10 to, have its flaws.

I give 10 to animes which gave me deep, strong and not easily forgetable emotions. As simple as that. Doesn't happen that often tho, so I could say I rate on a scale from 3 to 9 in fact, as I try to be a minimum objective. A 9 must already be deserved, so 10's are given by feelings for me.

If I really enjoy a series I'll give it a 8, 9, or 10.

If I think it was eh, I'll give it a 5, 6, or 7.

If it was crappy, I'll give it a 2, 3, or 4.

If it was unbelievably unwatchable and shitty beyond comparison, it gets a 1.

Everytime i rate something i imagine someone asking me "Hey hows this anime?" and depending on my answer (like: meh, good, awesome) is how i rate it.

I do have some Masterpieces but honestly i dont rate them with music, animation and stuff as something that important (of course i wont rate 10 if the animation sucks).

I'm always surprised by how few people use the 1-5 ratings. For me, it breaks down this way;

10- Truly amazing and original classic that inspires me
9- Classic; extremely good
8- Very good
7- Solid, good series.
6- Entertaining, decent series with either some significant flaws, or a major lack of originality.
5- Mostly average. Is marginally entertaining and definitely watchable.
4- Overall weak series, but has its moments, and I can watch the whole thing without being bored out of my skull.
3- Has several redeeming factors, but is mostly either boring as all hell, or has giant flaws and stupid elements the size of shotgun blasts.
2-Boring AND has a litany of flaws.
1- Watching the series for more than two minutes in a row makes me feel physically uncomfortable. Among the worst series I've ever watched.

My mean score is 5.6, 0.1 higher than a purely "average score" of (10+9+...+1)/10= 5.5, and that feels about right.
