I'm a girl and I like/love Gintama <3 Code Geass D. Gray man Soul Eater Detroit Metal City (I know, I know. Don't kill me) Trigun Deathnote Sayonara Zetsubou Sensei Durarara!! Baka to Test to Shoukanjuu Darker than Black Maria Holic TTGL and so on and so forth... I used to love shoujo back when I was 12-ish (new to anime) but then I got tired of the plain looking girl getting swooped off her feet by the most handsome guy in the school in almost every show. Wacky humor and sword/guns/any kind of fights please. |

I actually prefer, as this thread classifies them, 'guy' animes more than 'girl' animes, but I don't think that it's that big of a deal. Most anime are in between. Me and my brother can like the same anime. Some 'guy' anime I like would be Code Geass, Death Note, Durarara and such, some 'girl' anime would be Ouran Host Club, Maid Sama and Special A. Anything I give a 7 or above I like despite them being 'guy' or 'girl' anime. :D |

I'm a boy, and I absolutely LOVED: Toradora! (Number one anime in the world for me right now) Angel Beats! (Super close second, in fact, they're almost tied) Clannad + Clannad: AS (Very unique anime that I liked quite a lot as well) Actually, romance anime is what I came here for. If I ever want action, I will watch something like Pirates of the Caribbean. I love with a passion on how the Japanese portray romances. Highly dislike any western romance-type movies/cartoons. |

Interesting thread. I'm a guy and basically every anime I like to watch could be considered cute or 'girly'.. and I'm pretty okay with that. Looking at my profile, you'd see what I mean, but if I had to name a few that stand out: Clannad/Clannad ~After Story~ Toradora! Air Hanamaru Youchien Ouran High School Host Club I don't really classify my anime boy/girl. I classify them good/bad. ;) |

I have seen and liked a few from the OP post, and would add Texhnolyze, Sword of the Stranger, One Outs and Akagi/Kaiji. But usually the only genres I won't do that come to mind are ecchi/moeblob service stuff, so I think there's something interesting for everyone in all sorts of genres. |

I am a girl, and I think about more than 80% of the anime I watched and liked are shounen or "guy" anime. My lists can prove that. I do like a few of the "girl" anime, but they are almost rare to find for me. Most of the "girl" anime I either don't ever bother to start them or immediately give up upon watching the first several seconds of the first episode so they don't even end up in my "Dropped" list. It's a misconception to think that many girls only like girly anime. |

Hm. I notice that the guys really have nothing to say LOL. The ones that do lists quite a few shows that are actually meant to be towards guys, or both. The 'mushy' moe stuff that's been going around are obviously aimed at male otakus, I mean take a look at 80% of all visual novels. Totally one sided discussion imo. I'm a guy and I liked Kare Kano. There I said it. Aaahhhh |

Going to restate this again because most folk don't go back and read the whole thread. A few folk have figured out what this thread is really about and that is looking at perceptions of what is for "girls" and what is for "guys." I'm seeing a lot of "universality" and people who aren't buying into gender roles. But I also see a lot of girls preferring "girly stuff" and guys viewing it with disdain. It also seems that girls are far more likely to watch "guy shows than the other way around. I am not extending any kind of judgement on this. It is just very interesting to observe. I will again chant what seems to have become my MAL mantra, "You like what you like, and that's o.k." As the OP of this thread I was trying to see how many people would shake off the shackles, so yo speak. Thanks to everyone who participated and continue to have fun with the thread until it dies a natural death. |

I know where to draw the line. But once we talk about that seriously, this thread will likely blow up. In fact I think it's been mentioned several times, and I applaud all those who skillfully avoided it. We don't separate shoujo and shounen in television. Why do it with anime? Pretty sure it's a marketing thing; the whole world's a conspiracy. |

ideoidiom said: Shoujo and Shounen are merely target demographics. One can find the same genres and themes in either. Shounen is generally more action oriented and Shoujo more relationship oriented, but neither exclusively so. I've seen good stuff as well as sholck listed under both. I know where to draw the line. But once we talk about that seriously, this thread will likely blow up. In fact I think it's been mentioned several times, and I applaud all those who skillfully avoided it. We don't separate shoujo and shounen in television. Why do it with anime? There don't seem to be quite as many gender specific tv shows but it is certainly evident in books and movies. The people creating manga and anime definitely have a target audience in mind when they present a title for consumption. They have to know who is going to buy it and when it is airing, who is going to buy ad space around it and who is going to buy related merchandise. In the end, it comes down to dollars and yen. I have to admit that I get a giggle (was that girly?) out of guys who go "ewewww" at shows because they think it is shoujo and girls who go "ewewww" at mecha and the like. (Yeah, yeah. I go "ewewww" at high school/rom/com and most ecchi but it has nothing to do with the gender target.) |
