I would advise getting over it...

You are not responsible for it, and you are very limited by what you can do.
You not watching anime will not help them, nor will you feeling guilty about it.
You don't know any of them... so you have no personal connection to it.
People die all the time, I feel more disturbed by seeing a persons organs ripped out of them when they were hit by a car than I will ever feel by watching the news about people dying in an earthquake, it is just the way it is.
If anything, you should be thankful that it happened in Japan, where people are able to deal with this fairly well, if this earthquake had happened in Bangladesh, the death toll likely would have been over 50kk (due to the densely packed, poor population at near sea level altitude)....

You are showing more regret and angst about this than my Japanese roommate, who only yesterday confirmed his family was okay... earthquakes happen over there... it is life, and people got to move on, because them giving out unempathetic pity helps no one.

I hate to sound like some apathetic douche, I know I sound rather caullous about this, but other peoples suffering should not prevent you from enjoying life. If you do want to do something about it, then get in contact with a charity organization, it is probably the only way you can help...

This.

I really don't see how watching anime can make you feel bad.
If anything, it means that you appreciate what the people who worked on those series do.
I feel really bad because of the earthquake too, but watching anime has nothing to do with that.

Seriously...when I saw the news of the earthquake yesterday I felt so sick, sad and basically I feel exactly as if a family member of mine had died and had NO desire whatsoever to watch anime in a loooong time. I love anime and that will never change but honestly I just...can't...I would feel like a hypocrite, enjoying anime in a chair while there are so many people suffering over there...and honestly I know I won't be able to bring myself to watch anime at least not until stuff has calmed down over there.

When stuff like this happens I can't help but mourn the death of all those people and even cry and fall into depression. I know it's weird and it kinda makes me mad that all my friends just say "oh how sad right? So anyways lets watch anime" and "oh man it'll be delayed!" and "I hope my favorite mangaka doesn't die, if yes, then my favorite anime would be canceled, noo I don't want that!"

Don't they understand this are HUMAN BEINGS who are going through this over there!? I don't care about anime or manga! I just want there to be as few casualties as there can be and I don't even have family members there or anybody I know over there...sorry if what I said didn't make sense...am I the only one who thinks like this...?
jesus christ shut up. none of you were this self-righteous when that earthquake happened in China, hell, most of you weren't even batting a lash at the haiti earthquake. or that one in chile.

face it, you don't give a shit about the people you fake fuck, you just care about japan because of their precious entertainment.

half a thousand dying from disease in africa everyday, mid-eastern revolts? we don't care, but wait, an earthquake in the country that provides me with my animated porn? this is the end of the world, we need to make 50 threads about this because this is clearly the worst thing since the holocaust.

Why would watching cartoons from a country where a huge natural disaster happened make you feel guilty? Did you make the earth quake happen? Did God come down and said iif you watched anymore Japanese cartoons then he was going to smite Japan and you said screw God and did it anyway?

If the first thought that went through you head was that you might be cut off from new anime for a while instead of those poor people, then maybe you might have something to feel a little guilty about.

It was an extremely sad, upsetting tragedy, but you know.. people are badly suffering ALL the time. And yes some suffer far worse than others but still, it's suffering all the same.

I understand why you're upset. I'm sure everyone is feeling atleast a little sorrow for those that were killed, injured and those that even just experienced the tragedy, but you have no reason to feel guilty.

People die all the time, human lives aren't worth shit, we're just specs of dust on a tiny little rock drifting in the void. If we wasted all our time crying ourselves to sleep whenever someone was suffering, we wouldn't even have time to sleep.

And OP, have you ever faced a tragedy yourself? From the fact that you can even care this much about people you've never even met, I'd assume you're living a happy and sheltered life, away from natural disasters, wars, famine and any other tragedy.
If so, enjoy your life and count yourself lucky. It will likely be your time sooner or later either way, best enjoy your carefree existence while you can.

Also yes, hypocrisy much? The only reason anyone ever care about things like this is because of the publicity, and in this case likely extra effect for weeabos.

I understand what you're getting at, but you shouldn't feel guilty for enjoying anime. It's not like you caused the earthquake to happen. :/ It's sad that people have died, but that's no reason to fall into a depression (unless they were family or friends of yours) over it.

I do sort of get what you mean, but there's not a lot you can do about it. Most people feel bad about chillin' comfortably at home while everyone's in a desperate struggle over there, but you can't let it get in the way of your life. The best you can do is donate money, and if it's really bugging you, maybe you should do just that.

Harsh, but true. Disasters affecting Japan always get more attention in communities like this. It's pretty standard nationalism, or, more specifically - being a weeaboo - but nothing to attack the guy over really.

OP thinks that whole Japan is one big anime factory huh?

Did you also stop using your shoes after 220000 people died in Indonesia in 2004?
Damn hypocrite.

I agree with StreetSmartz, you were given some harsh comments but they all have really good points. People are suffering and dieing worse death's then a death by an earthquake or tsunami. For example soo many people in Africa die from hunger everyday. Hunger is a terrible terrible thing. I have stayed hungry for half a day before (fasting) and you do not know how bad it felt. Does this stop you from feeling guility while eating or wasting food?

Sorry but I just had to lol at most of the comments in here....my wife's Japanese and even she wasn't as hysterical as what OP had posted. While some of her friends lived in the Tokyo vicinity, they were all safe and most of her family and people she grew up with all live in Okinawa.

If you really want your concerns to be felt out in anime land, I suggest the next time your out shopping is to buy yourself a few boxsets and help the anime industry instead of downloading.

As for other victims, well I hear the international red cross are asking for donations so how bout pitching in instead of taking time out to wail on a site who really doesn't care...

so as for your question...yes

That's true. The press barely covered the quake in China.
Here's what I think about the following events:
China quake: They have more people than they need.
Mid-East revolts: Because of them gas is $3.70 a gallon, at least wait until most people have electric cars before you decide to overturn your dictatorships.
Haiti quake: Tragic, I donated a little, then the Red Cross fucked up the funding.
African disease: It's old news, no one I know really, REALLY cares about a bunch of uneducated Africans who who would just love to be a dictator themselves or decide to be Somalian pirates.
Japan quake: I donated a bit already. Yes, I'm sad, and I really care. It's a beautiful and highly developed nation that has a lot of prospects. It's getting a lot of press coverage. I have a few friends living in Japan, two of which I have yet to hear from so naturally I'm concerned. But I'm not worried about the country overall because I know that Japan will persevere though it because of their own determination and the fact that half the free world is helping them.

I'm not going to quote fucking Stalin or post an apathetic comment but if you're that upset about it, why not donate some money to the Red Cross or another charity? Definitely would be more helpful than moping around feeling guilty.

Completely agree with this. People suffer all over the world, and I try my best to be mindful of this. I've donated to Haitian and buy as much fair trade things as I can, etc. But because I know the names, faces, and stories of more people from Japan than, say, New Zealand, I feel a greater sense of personal empathy to what is happening there. It brings the fear and shock of the disaster much closer to home. I have my interest in anime and manga to thank for that. I think that's a good thing, and watching anime now would only remind me to appreciate this.

Disgusting. It doesn't matter whether it was a 8.9 quake or a 0.9 quake, the bottom line is that it was a DISASTER and that PEOPLE'S LIVES have been AFFECTED/LOST.
