Well I saw GQuuuuuuX: The Beginning at the cinema earlier today and wow was I blown away and surprised by the direction they took. I knew Char was going to be in it based on the promotional images, but I honestly had no clue going in that we were just outright going to be seeing the entire One Year War like that. Universal Century is still my favourite timeline so I think it is really cool that they are essentially making a new version of it with this series. It was fun seeing all of the characters and locations (as well as even the music) from the original Gundam series again in such a short span of time. The twist of Char being the one to steal the RX-78 instead of Amuro was clever and was the key change from which Zeon went on to win the war. They even updated the RX-78 design to match that of all of the new mechs in this series, which are still a little strange but definitely interesting. The end of the prologue was by far the overall highlight for me, with Char encountering a mysterious newtype in the midst of the final battle with the Earth Federation and witnessing a beautiful display of shiny colours and light (kira kira as Yuzuriha later calls it) which he describes as time itself, before disappearing. The cut to 5 years later marked a very drastic shift in the story, as the true plot of Gquuuuuux began. Whilst a lot of new characters and concepts were introduced in quick succession, I didn't think it ever went too fast. Side 6 is a fun choice for the setting as I feel we haven't seen much of it before and it gives an independent perspective outside of the usual Earth Federation/Zeon. Yuzuriha definitely won me over fast and I am glad she got to pull the classic Gundam move of suddenly stealing a Gundam surprisingly easily. Shuuji was by far the most puzzling new character, piloting the Char's red Gundam and seemingly knowing more about the strange new newtype powers central to this series. I am really hoping that they follow through with the hinted at romance from Yuzuriha and Shuuji's meeting. Did anyone else think Nyaan's introduction was reminiscent of Kamille's or is it just me? Other than that she was fairly subdued so far so I am interested as to what they end up doing with her character. I thought the insert songs were good choices that fit the mood, though they were certainly very different from the classic Gundam music in the first part. The story ended after their first Clan Battle but I am sure there are still a lot more fights to come and I am very much looking forward to seeing them.

Fuck this was awesome. First half was like a new and improved 0079 AU. The music, character designs even direction were classic sunrise. But Khara had their stamp on this noticeably in the design of the new Gundam and the fight scenes which were reminiscent of The Eva rebuilds.

The new take on Char and Zeon was so cool. I need to know what he saw and where he went. Are we getting a multiversal sort of story or did he just become one with the mobile suit?! Part of me feels like he might have just had an awakening and started being able to perceive 4 dimensional space. The 4th dimension being time which is what we saw in interstellar.

Shuji in the second half has a very similar introduction to Kaworu in Eva.. even the way he talks. Could be a hint to his origins.

2nd half does an amazing job setting up the tv anime and leads. I love the new character designs and the MC so much already. Amate is adorable!! Anqii is mommy!

It looks like for now anyway we’ll be doing more street battling in this one than military combat. Definitely a fresh take on Gundam! So many cool directions they can take it in with this AU timeline traveling concept

We’re also gonna be focusing more on the newtype abilities in this one which I’m very excited for. Loved every moment. The music was sooo good. Yonezu Kenshi’s theme was awesome, but I love the girl on the space colony ost too!! I can not wait until April gets here

I almost wanna go play Sun and moon because I love this art style so much lol.

Here's my thoughts as someone who watched The Beginning as a non-Gundam fan. Prior to this, I have only watched gwitch and nothing else in the franchise, but after seeing The Beginning, I'm itching to watch more! I'm also happy that I watched a video that explained a little bit of lore from the original series before I went into this, because I'm not sure how well I would have been able to follow the first half if I didn't have an (admittedly very small) amount of context on who Char is and what the One Year War is. That being said, I think even without the very basic amount of background I got, the first half was still very engaging and possible to follow as a new fan.

I'm loving these characters so far! I think they'll have great chemistry as a cast. Even though Nyaan barely got any lines yet, I think she's going to be my favorite off of vibes alone. Machu kind of has zero brain cell energy ("I want to fight them!" -> jumps into the Gundam and immediately tries to run away instead of fight). Shuji is definitely going to be the most interesting to learn more about, I'm loving the mysterious and artsy vibe around him.

The soundtrack was great! Hearing the music transition midway through from the classic, synthy, militaristic stuff from the original to the modern, EDM-ish type soundtrack after the time skip was a great way to shift the tone. Potential to have one of my favorite OPs or EDs this year based on what we heard so far.

Overall, I think this show is going to offer something for old fans and new fans of Gundam alike, and watching it in theaters has got me feeling very hyped for the series release.

Why the hell is the The Beginning movie not a separate entry on MAL? It's a recut of the first 4 episodes, it's a compilation movie. And compilation movies get entries on MAL. Really annoying stuff! I guess I'll just mark having watched the first 4 eps of GQuuuuuux for now, but hopefully they add it later.

@upbeat_deadbeat I also watched The Beginning after only having watched G-Witch. Unfortunately, I didn't think to watch a video explaining anything about the original series. I was pretty confused, and I definitely enjoyed the second half more. 😅

No surprise that Shuji's mysterious vibe intrigued me the most since I was an El4n fan.

I saw this in cienmas and it was so good, if this continues through out the rest of the series, we're upto something awesome. Now i can't wait for April. Some stuffs that kahara is know are quite noticeable like the Gundam design and fight scene along with the music, camera angles and pacing. And Shuji reminds me of Kaworu.

Was amazing, and I love this AU for Char piloting a Gundam...(who wanted that) and also having a boyfriend with a romance that transcends space and time.

Xavier was incredibly cute, hope he actually gets to pilot in the series and isnt just an observer. I assume Shuji will get swapped out at some point otherwise, compelling if he stays as the lead characters MAV.

Completely expecting tons of confusions from casual viewers when the tv show airs, people would need to watch or read Gundam Origin, or first Gundam compilation movies...was disappointing M'Quave is alive but Ramba Ral and Hamon stays dead??? Where Amuro at...his dad was there afterall.

I am not super into this having gone into this blind. Like, Char with the Gundam kicking everyone's butts is interesting, but they basically were just setting up the actual cool stuff Char did as he wiped out his family, that was going to come after they finished the Federation, but they didn't. This was just 40 minutes to set up a "what if Zeon won" AU and I am not that into that.

The use of Challia Bull was really inspired though, really like that hook.

I watched the first three episodes in theaters so it is kind of hard to talk just about that, but the tease of Lalaru, the momentary appearance of Saya, and what Char saw when he saw time (the original timeline maybe?) are all good hooks, that um, well,

All in all, not huge into it, if I knew it was just UC AU I probably would have skipped it.

I went in not knowing it was connected to the UC at all. I even told my girlfriend going in that she didn't need to know anything. As soon as it started with the original intro and Char showed up my jaw dropped. It was an excellent surprise! The idea of him stealing the Gundam was so fun. The redesign of Rx78 - 2 confused me but I understand it wouldn't fit the aesthetic. The Zaku were different too though not as drastic. They basically eva'd it. The whole one year war playing out was so interesting and it opens the door for other characters possibly showing up in later episodes. Once they cut to the new characters I immediately fell in love with their designs. I was foaming at the mouth by the end cause I just wanna keep watching and know what happens. After the movie ended I apologize to my gf cause it must have been confusing not knowing anything. She said while it was a little confusing it only made her want to watch the original series. This series might drive more people to dive head first into the UC. I just hope Amaro or Bright have a cameo in the future. Bonus points if they have Kamile show up in some form. If you can see it in theaters please do!

I just saw it today and I'm so excited for when it officially starts airing. The animation was beautiful on both sides, I loved seeing 0079's style updated but not altered. I couldn't believe it when it opened the exact same way as the TV show, it was such a pleasant surprise!

I was nervous about anyone but Ikeda being Char but I think Yuuki Shin did an excellent job. After the initial adjustment, I really wasn't distracted by his voice or anything and it was reminiscent of a softer Ikeda when he would get to talking. I really enjoyed seeing Char again and the voice change didn't take away from that.

Wasn't sure what I would think of the new Gundam style but I really fell for Char's Gundam, and GQuuuuuuX is way more awesome in motion than I thought it would be based on still images. Truthfully, I was wondering if I'd not be a fan once we hit the newer stuff but I should've had more faith in Hideaki Anno.

Char in a Gundam is so cool & I LOVE CHALLIA BULL.

Another hero? Oh, please!

Watched Beginning not knowing anything about it being an alternate UC timeline. I'll admit I've never watched the original Gundam series, but it was really cool seeing Char and that time period in modernized animation. I loved what Khara did with the Rebuild movies, so seeing their design cues in Gundam is just so cool.

I really enjoyed what I saw at the movie theatre this week as a not very big gundam fan, although I thought I was watching the wrong movie at the beginning because of the first half. I did enjoy seeing Char and also his interactions with Challia.
Funny thought I had at the end of the first half. When Char vanished, he slipped into the "lifestream"...

I didn't quite know the world premise of Gquuuuuux other than it focussed around a teen trio that seems to be appealing to a similar target demographic that Witch from Mercury did. I found that I was able to appreciate the two art directions to differentiate what happened in the past and what is happening in the present. Both halfs were great.

One nitpick I have was that I felt like the placement choice of Koneshi Yonezu's Plazma song felt kind off.
Maybe because I've heard the song a few times on random Spotify anime playlists already, but it didn't feel very impactful to me in practice when the song played.

I thought the movie would have it's own separate MAL entry since I thought some parts(first half???) of the movie wouldn't be included when the anime officially airs on TV. (correct me if i'm wrong)

Just saw Beginning in the theater. Went into completely blind without knowing this would be based on UC/Char. I was wondering whether I was watching the right movie at first!

The music is pretty good for one. I really like the song that played in the original trailer months ago that also played during the highway scene. (Also plays during the credits)

I think this will be an interesting series, through I can’t judge it much because not much happened to move the plot forward during this film. I am, however, happy that Gundam is back. What a time to be alive :)

As a Eureka Seven/Gurren Lagann 2000s mecha fan, I am partial to whimsical stories with super immature teenage mecha pilots like Machu and Shuji. I really hope this series sticks the landing and becomes something people watch for decades to come.

Only a few more weeks until it comes to Prime. See you then folks.

My Summary of this anime.

I did watch this Gundam: GQuuuuuuX -Beginning myself realizing Its a alternate timeline in the UC 079 storyline where Amuro Ray doesn't exist, Char Aznable manages to hijack a gundam on Side 7 space colony, and paint the gundam red (Of course Char is the Red Comet his mobile suits he pilots are red sometimes) and repurpose it to have use psycrom attack beam bits thus winning the war for Zeon. During battle of Battle of A Baoa Qu Char Aznable mysterly disappears then 7 years later on a space colony Side 6, on a neutral colony a Zeon ship docks there on mission to to find Char's mobile suit very one red looking Gundam that he hijack which has appear at the colony. Amate Yuzuriha is a high-school student she look at a girl named Nyaan, a courier who carries a illegal packages to earn money while on a rush being chased by some unknown people she bumps into Amate by accident drops the item. Of course Amate picks up to for some odd reason wait for Nyaan to come back which she did to try to get it back but fail only to negotiate with Amate to show her secret by introducing her clients who granted the permission who happen to be apart of a illegal underground mobile suit dueling sport known as Clan Battle...I am going to stop right there.

It's not the best movie but I understand its a introduction of the characters and universe considering this is done by Hideaki Anno of the Evangelion franchise fame with his own Studio Khara animating this anime with the blessings of Sunrise ( which is no longer around its rebranded as Bandai Namco Filmworks). They were trying to promote the anime for fans to get into idea of the series.

@Raxivace Incredibly disappointing that this got deleted... I wish there was a reason for it. Feels like it was a totally valid entry. And as someone who feels the need to record everything I've watched, it's annoying that I can't put this on my list.

100% agree though. I need the full series more than I need oxygen. The mobile suit designs especially are to die for and god the animation is so fluid and unique. I had to go back again just to watch the mechs move. It was beautiful. Like when the Gundam's head turns 180 to fire its head vulcans (I love when robots move in ways only robots can) and then the rest of the body eventually follows in this really satisfying twirl motion. Or watching the thrusters on the Zakus fire to help them reposition in space. Just so many lovely details in the movie.

@Zetsuji It really is frustrating, indeed. I just went to check out the denied entries page here and the reason listed is so stupid: "First few episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX". Gee almost like it's a compilation movie, that's crazy -_-

Finally got see this, been super excited ever since it was announced

Loved all the UC fanservice, funny to see them getting as many defences to 0079 in the opening 10 or so minutes. The opening scene once we get into the movie felt similar to zeta so I wonder if this is going to be like an alternate zeta? I feel like they might go futher but not sure of the episode count, probably like 24-26 though. There is also a part of me that thinks this is almost going to be like a post CA thing given that we've sort of had an axis shock and we have psycommu

I think when the series starts episode 1 will start with machu and all the previous stuff might be an episode 0 or recut into the series. Excited to see what the deal Shuuji is, I think Char is maybe fused with the red gundam? Maybe not literally but his conscious is in there, also wouldn't be surprised if omega psycommu is a quantum level super weapon (I thinking this because it's pronounced g-quarks) and maybe this somehow explains why the show is named this way lmao.

Very excited to see where this goes and happy with what I saw, fucked up that this is the timeline where amuro just slept in lmao

Also it's insane that that isn't in the mal database, it's basically just a complation movie so it feels really strict to not include it

A very promising start! The beginning was just pure fanservice and I love the idea of developing an AU, where Char finds the Gundam and the chain reaction resulting from that. They did a great job adapting the original aesthetic and the use of the original music cues was very charming.

The second half I also really liked. Machu is a very energetic personality and she feels like a true GAINAX character. Nyaan is an intriguing character and I can't wait to find out more about her background and motivation.

The one problem I had was with Shuuji. There was just something about him, that annoyed me a bit. Like others have said, he feels like a Kaworu type of character: Very mysterious and cool and weird, but I think if he is one of the 3 main characters throughout the series, his character better expand way beyond that, or, this will be something I grow tired of and become annoyed by quite fast.
If your main personality aspect differentiating you from the masses is the tendency to aggressively sniff other characters, you have a problem. It's also the reason, that the (likely romantic?) set-up between him and Machu fell a bit flat. Of the 3 Machu and Nyaa have way better chemistry, so far.
I'm optimistic, that there is more his personality (and not just his character's history. That is very fascinating). We'll see.

Had no idea wht it would be (aside from being made by ex Gainax and directed by Tsurumaki). After a few notes of music and then the UC mention, I was pretty suspicious.

...turns out it's Anno's fan-tasm for the original Gundam crossed with a certain energy and look (reminding

Score: 4?/10
Enjoyment: 2/5
also, ten euros for an episodes recut in theatres... what a shame

This movie was really cool to see going in completely blind. Char gaming was not at all what I expected and was absolutely delighted. All the musical motifs made it all feel like I was in 1979. Machu seems like a fun lass, she really rolled the punches with all the sudden craziness she's having to face. I'm excited to see how this series unfolds.

Cassius was on the bridge when Char vaporised him but I didn't see Bright so he could've survived?
Due to the installation key things I hope Tem Ray is alive somehow maybe Zeonic poached him post war like a reversal of what Anaheim did in Stardust Memory .
I wonder if Cameron is married to Mirai in this timeline.

Watched it on a plane so I was quite sleepy and probably missed some parts of it, but I'm still confused how the two parts are even connected and the second one, honestly, seemed to me like utter rubbish. The first part at least presented an interesting take on alternate version of uc, yet I can't help but think how fanservicy it all is, starting from appearance of Char, following by upgraded designs to make more gunpla merch, and Haro in a hat to make more cute merch... which, I'm not really complaining even if it sounds like it. Just, the story itself mostly looks like a complete mess otherwise. I hope to understand more after watching the series version.

Also, the major downside for me was the change of Char's seiyuu. I mean, if you are going to give us fanservice, I'll take 100 percent of it, thank you very much. Even though the new seiyuu did a good job, it's just not the same.
