More important storytelling about Mayuri but this extends to Nemu too. It's been a long time since this show gave a glimpse into the 12th Division's past. An interesting one though and it looks like Nemu would do whatever it takes to complete her mission.

Pernida is crazy and this episode really went to another level. Hell of a battle imo. Say what you want about Mayuri's division but would've probably been the best match up against him.

To be fair, this IS Mayuri we're talking about. Anything's possible when it comes to him. Even creating Nemu, as weird as it sounds. Nemu turned out to be stronger than she seemed, and her backstory was nice, even if it was predictable. But while I like Mayuri, he’s one of the few Bleach characters I like, but Nemu was in the background too long for me to care much about her now.... is what I had thought but what the fuck man. When that Shiro Sagisu track started playing in the back.... FUCK.

Thought we were going to het some sappy flashback or something, but nah, this is Mayuri we're talking about, dude can stop the OST from playing with his hands alone lol. Was nice to see that scientist from Hueco Mundo arc at least though. And in terms of Nemu, Mayuri will revive her. He won’t let such a valuable discovery go to waste, that’s what he’d say. Meanwhile, dude just cared about the fact that he's surpassed Urahara... LOL.

Don't know what to say man. Easily one of, if not THE BEST directed episode of Bleach EVER. Nemu's 🀀/10

While I would say episode of the cour, looks like episode of the cour is very well coming soon after seeing that post credit scene.

It feels kinda weird tbh, I mean they could’ve simply decided to have this episode as the “previous” episode and the previous episode as the “current” one, because you know, the continuity in anything feels better. Not really an issue though, just that it feels odd, because at the end of the day they wanted to adapt this part. Anyway, it’s been long overdue when it comes to getting to know anything at all about Nemu. She’s been here since the start, but yeah, all we know is that she’s an experimental subject of Mayuri(which is all she’s about too xD), though hey, Mayuri calling someone creepy…

… it’s, you know, pot calling the kettle black lmaoooo. Though still, lil Nemu was… pretty similar to the current Nemu, just that she was short. Liked the small bit she was on screen, but yeah, to think the current one literally committed suicide to kill that quincy… quite graphically at that, sheesh. Makes sense they had that insert song for her. Really something this particular part was, and yeah, they made sure it would weird people out, and it did as well. Mayuri deserves that rest xD

Great to see Toushirou and Matsumoto back as well.

Great episode, though still not sure why they would change from the manga and decide to split up the Mayuri/Shunsui fights? Maybe Kubo didn't like the pacing originally, but who knows. I don't hate the change but I think they should've just kept it in their own segments like the manga because it didn't really add anything extra by splitting them, unless something changes. And I think the post credits scene was brand new? The "normal" soldiers having the crazy new almighty on them was unexpected.

Baby Hold Your Hand P2 was crazy.
As a manga reader i was expecting this to be some great episodes in the season, as the whole fight involved more than just fireworks.
Watching Mayuri give his all and Nemuri's lore animated was in fact cinema. I expect this to be easily one of the best episodes of the year πŸ”₯

Another Captain Kurotsuchi episode. Another banger. I loved it so much. Their teamwork was so nice to see. We were finally able to defeat Pernida. Nemu's sacrifice was quite sad and seeing how proud he was of Nemu even tho he never showed his feelings to her. It was beautiful. RIP Nemuri No. 7. You were his masterpiece. It was a great episode.

Every moment that Nemu have screen time makes an episode better. This was an awesome episode.

If you ever doubt you can raise a kid, remember that Mayuri raised Nemu from a baby to adulthood. Sure was a group project, and weird things certainly happened.

It's sad that Nemu died. I didn't really have much attachment to either her or Mayuri, but this episode did made me feel something for her. RIP Nemu and goddamn we are seeing Granz after such a long time. Bro is being as condescending as he was in Arrancar arc and brought Mayuri back to his senses.

Once again, 5/5 episode. Bleach hype train continues. Looks like we getting Bazz-B vs Jugram next week.

What I love about this is that Mayuri is supposed to be this mad scientist that doesn’t let his feelings get on his way, however, with Nemuri no. 7, he grew fond of her, to the point of calling her just Nemu as sort of a caring nickname, he didn’t want her to fight Pernida because he was afraid of her to end up dying and he didn’t want to lose his daughter, she is like a daughter to him.
During the Arrancar/Hueco Mundo arc when he fought Szayel, Mayuri mentioned that for a scientist, "perfection is despair", this episode showed us why he said that. He achieved his perfect creation.
The fact that Mayuri made sure to save her brain speak tons.

“I’ve surpassed you, Kisuke Urahara.”

Next-level episode, very emotional and well-written. I will never be the same.

Finally some long-awaited development for Mayuri and Nemu. They’ve always had the coldest Captain/Lieutenant relationship, so I really like how the backstory showed that he did care for her in his own twisted way, he just wasn’t good at expressing it.

With Pernida gone that’s one less Quincy to worry about, while the Soul Reapers are getting Hitsugaya and Rangiku back. Another great episode this week.

@silversain2 Well powerwise Nemu wasn't strong enough to beat Perninda because she died while Perninda was fully healed. Perninda however did die by Nemu because he basically got cancer from eating Nemu but that had nothing to do with Nemu's actual strength.

Incredible, just incredible. Goodbye Nemu ;-; your sacrifice wasn't in vain. The body horror from Pernida was creepy, but cool as all hell. That post-credits scene with the Bambis was sick, at least we finally know that Meninas and Candace truly died, but at least they got a little more action. I really wish they used "The Theatre Suicide" for the next episode's title, it's just so badass sounding. Maybe they just can't use the word "suicide" because of television standards or something

Utterly creepy but good episode. Looks like Nemu has a chance here, but it took some time to get to this resolution. I was really hoping science captain would at least shed ONE tear, it would have been way more powerful. Still, I feel like his coldness is a self-deception.
Somehow Quincies continue to be even creepier than him.

I was looking forward to this moment the most. This was my favorite fight from the final arc and that is owed to its gutturally emotional second half adapted here as well as just how kinetic and intelligent the fight was. For most this cour it was Shunsui vs Lille for its esoteric artistry, but for me it's the beautiful and shockingly sentimental character pieces that Mayuri and Nemu receive here which cemenented them as among my favorite characters and made me tear up at the conclusion back during its serialization days. Nemu is best girl.

Nemu is Mayuri's greatest creation and we learn that she is actually the 7th attempt in the Nemuri Project - this one being successful enough to survive to the age of a young woman. We learn that her constant progress and evolution as an artifical Shinigami is Mayuri living a waking dream--and in that sense he loves her. But Mayuri is appalled when he watches his perfect creation selflessly risk destruction to protect his life from Pernida because her purpose is to live and evolve; and now she's evolved enough to develop attachment and emotion towards Mayuri. In the means of chasing scientific advancement, Mayuri would willingly die if it means his perfect creation continues on. Nemu however demonstrates what is essentially free will and believes she can show Mayuri her evolution whilst saving his life at the same time. But she is eradicated by The Compulsory and reduced to a downpour of blood that soaks Mayuri.

Perhaps the best moment from this entire fight is straight after when Mayuri--sunken by despair--hallucinates an apparition of Szayel who taunts and gloats about his loss. He calls back to the Arrancar arc where Mayuri gave him that speech about perfection and how Mayuri abhors the concept; telling Mayuri that he should be glad that his perfect creation was just brutalized as he can now start anew. Then of course we get Mayuri's epiphany, which is symbolized by him grabbing fake Szayel by the face. It's such a powerful display of visual stoytelling showing the thoughts racing through Mayuri's head at the moment.

Pernida's characterization is masterful too and probably the best portrayal of evolution I've seen from a work of fiction. He is the Soul King's Left Arm of Progress and becomes stronger and smarter at an exponential rate as the fight progresses, and Kubo displays this through his verbal IQ as well. Another highlight moment of the fight is when after Pernida clocks on to Mayuri and Nemu's plan with the freezing agent and splits off its own thumb to save itself then proceeds to mock Mayuri; Mayuri comes to the horrific realization that the way Pernida is engaging with the fight, the intonation in its voice and how it's addressing Mayuri is akin to Kenpachi and that Pernida has been evolving this entire time by using the traits it has gained from everything it's interacted with. Mayuri then looks down to Nemu because he thinks she's the one in immediate danger as Pernida has Zaraki's reflexes, only for the central hand to be behind Mayuri where it sheds its own skin from the freezing agent just like how Mayuri's Bankai shed its own skin from Pernida's nerves.

Anyway, this is the best episode from this cour yet. Among the most beautiful in production as well - especially so in art, direction, compositing and sound. Audiovisually aesthetic. Looks like since last week Bleach fans are being gifted with continuous masterpiece episodes as I'd anticipated now that we're in the main course. Mayuri/Nemu vs Pernida is some of the best writing in the entire series and particularly spotlights its prowess in character writing+dynamics, thematic structuring and dialogue. My one gripe with the last episode was that its presentation still felt outmatched by the manga in most if not all aspects, particularly because of Kubo's cinematic panelling and page composition that naturally direct the reader to smell the roses before moving on to the next. But for this episode a lot of the moments felt elevated despite adapting another perfect fight from the manga.

Essay over; 10/10. With how much I've talked about it here, this might just be my favorite episode from the series. Baby Hold Your Hand 2 and Don't Chase A Shadow are both top 5 episodes. Episode of the Year; Anime of the Year.

@setsuna777 the guy is obsessed with coming off as the dispassionate scientist, which makes sense when doing scientific projects you don't to get emotionally involved or biased (tell THAT to thousands of scientists who literally can't/won't do that) but I also think he takes it too far by trying to never show any emotion EVER which is not a good idea. I think his cold exterior became something he uses to protect himself because inside he is likely a whirlwind of feels. It was kind of alluded to with him calling her Nemu instead of Nemura No. 7. He truly does love her and honestly it looks like she was given a pretty good life with toys and crayons and stuff. Trust, there are way worse parents out there.

@setsuna777 The point of Mayuri's development here wasn't to make you sympathize with him; Kubo leaves that up to you to decide for yourself. What this episode does do for certain however is humanize him by bringing to light his relationship with Nemu (as well as Szayel). His treatment of Nemu is heinous in the Soul Society arc, he then mellows out on the abuse in the Arrancar arc, then you learn in the Thousand Year Blood War arc that he actually takes immense pride in her and does love her to the point that he's distraught at the prospect of her risking her life to save him because he's more concerned about his pride and joy continuing on its purpose than he himself as the scientist. It's a unique form of love, just like Kenpachi-Unohana. Character dynamics are varied and rich in this series.

"My child's hand, so lost
Wandering, in search of mine
Close but far, I take your hand
Together we will walk, to the end"

-BABY, HOLD YOUR HAND

Sounds ominous. People have pointed out that the poem here might have foreshadowed Mayuri and Nemu's fate. In the very beginning of the fight Mayuri has his hand extended, and this poem most likely references him taking the hand of his "child" Nemu and walking together to the very end—implying an unfortunate fate.

Iirc by the way, Baby, Hold Your Hand (71) was the best-selling TYBW volume.

It was kind of funny how Mayuri was talking to Ashisogijizo expecting it to answer to him (or maybe not). However, it would have been funnier if Ashisogijizo had actually answered Mayuri with this deep male voice. Just to see Mayuri scoffing and contemplating he hadn't put such a function into Ashisogijizo. Today's episode's theme seemed to be unexpected growth. At least in the eyes of Mayuri.

It was nice we learned more about Nemu or should I call her Nemuri no. 7? I feel like the reason why Mayuri settled to call her 'Nemu' was due to the fact Nemu survived beyond his expectations and continued to grow, so he wasn't anymore dreaming. (As for those who don't know, "nemuri" means sleep.) Though, ironically Nemu felt no. 7 was her true name, instead of Nemu. But I suppose in the end she accepted it. At least after her talk with Akon. This made me think Akon acted a bit like a surrogate father to Nemu which was super sweet!

Also, as a side note, it seemed Nemu had a rather sweet childhood even though she was obviously growing up in a laboratory, but even so. She seemed to grow in a pretty good environment (she had toys and all other things a child would need and I bet she was watched over 24/7). Which lead to me ponder did Nemu's 'growth' cease at some point? Because if we compare her adulthood to her childhood the way she was mostly treated in her adulthood was abusive. It felt like Nemu was this genius child, but once she hit puberty/adulthood she became 'normal' and thus a disappointment to Mayuri. which led to Mayuri behaving the way he did toward Nemu. But once she showed once again signs of 'growth' he seemed amazed and almost sad Nemu went and sacrificed herself for his sake. Write about a very complex father-daughter relationship! Because Mayuri was Nemu's father in a sense, even I bet Mayuri would rather gouge his eyes out than admit that.

In that sense, Nemu was the perfect opponent against Pernida when came to defeating him. If not Nemu, I'm quite sure Mayuri would have had a much harder time defeating him as Mayuri mostly ended up being amazed by everyone's growth and in Nemu's case her 'perfection'! Luckily ghost of Szayelaporro came to the rescue which in itself was very ironic. But it was enough to snap Mayuri out of his frozen state and pocket Nemu's brain. Without him doing that...Pernida would have evolved even more. It made me wonder if Pernida had managed to devour Nemu fully, would he have become more human-like? Well, no matter what, I'm sure Nemuri no. 7's brain will be put to good use. (Not to spoil anything, but manga readers can surely agree on this, hm?)

Oh, it was a neat detail it showed how Toshiro and Rangiku got shipped to the battlefield, because as far as I can remember in the manga Toshiro just randomly appeared at one point. My memory of this point of manga is very shaky because this whole Mayuri and Nemu part took an extremely long time to be explained and covered, which goes to show Kubo's favorites... I wonder if Mayuri will combust when he learns about Ururu? Because I'm very sure he will at some point or another go to Kisuke and gloat about Nemu and I wouldn't put it past to Kisuke to slyly mention Ururu and the fact, 'oh yeah, I too created an artificial soul that can evolve'. But while Mayuri clearly geared toward a more shinigami-like existence, Kisuke geared toward more a human-like existence. It makes one wonder...which one is nearer to that 'perfection' that Mayuri was seeking? As Ururu will obviously grow faster and quicker older than Nemu would have.

Random side note, Ikkaku and Yumichika thanking Mayuri, and also Toshiro thanking him was nice. Yet at the same time somewhat bizarre, considering everything that Mayuri has done in the past. But like Mayuri basically pointed out...beggars can't be choosers.

It seems Mayuri wasn't the only one who came with 'luggage' to Wahrwelt as Giselle had brought her girl friends! And good thing she had, because those foot soldiers seemed to be tough ones to defeat with Yhwach's eye power in those. I wonder if those are part of Yhwach himself or his power's manifestations or what? In the manga those didn't appear, so this is all new to everybody!

Looks like the next episode will be about Kyoraku and Nanao, based on the ending "poem" card. The one who talked was Nanao and the next episode's title hinted at Kyoraku. Not going to manga spoilers, but those who have read the manga will know the next episode will more than likely focus fully on Kyoraku and Nanao, just like this episode focused mainly on Mayuri and Nemu. Which begs the question...whose fights the last two episodes (since I assume this cour will be 13 episodes and more than likely the last two episodes will air on the same day just like last time) will feature? Because there will be one last cour and hopefully this cour will also end up with a big bang, like last time.

I came into this episode expecting the same level of greatness as last week's episode - an incredible fight adaptation that the manga still outclassed. But holy shit, they went above and beyond for this one. I'm so glad Nemu got the love she deserves, and so did Kubo's favorite character Mayuri the MVP of TYBW of course.

10/10 adaptation of 10/10 content. A perfect episode; the best episode from this year so far (and I hope Friend is even better). The unga-bungas who mald about uno reverse cards in hax-heavy series also lost their bread-and-butter cope against TYBW.

9/10 episode in my book. Pacing was a bit fast for my taste, but Nemu's death and the Szayel scene were adapted perfectly.

It is a bit odd though that Pernida didn't use Vollstandig. He didn't in the manga either, but in the anime it was actually confirmed he does have one.

Also, it seems with that after-credits scene that CFYOW is at least partially contradicted, since
