If comparing this arc to another arc in One Piece it would be Thriller Bark. This one had so much chaos and fun within it, it was always a blast, and despite having some danger and drama, it more so felt like I was on a rollercoaster ride- I knew things would be okay but it was thrilling nonetheless. Caesar even morphed into a big monster like Moria did to top off this similar feeling. Yet, from the moment the fights ended, this arc’s conclusion felt absolutely captivating, my feeling is comparable to when Moria was defeated and Kuma came in to finish off the Straw Hats but not only as a proxy for Doflamingo. There’s just so much going on, and so many emotions I have, and so much tension built up in these final moments that it’s sold to me that this isn’t a rollercoaster anymore, this is a dangerous line we are walking. Every time the chaos starts to diminish more comes, but more than that something else has arisen.
Vergo, Doflamingo’s right hand man, was left to die and Monet was killed by Caesar. Interestingly, both of these are the result of Law. Law has shown that he’s not all talk, he is willing to let people die when it furthers his plans, he’s quite shameless about it too “if you’re kind to people, good things will happen to you”. I had already touched on how humanizing their final call to Doflamingo was, it hit me hard to see these people so loyal to their young master they could die with a smile for doing what they could and even sacrifice themselves due to their belief in him. I even felt bad that Monet’s final mission was crushed by Caesar’s wrath, her conviction to Doflamingo was wiped away like it was dirt. Like, I want to believe in Doflamingo after all that, his people certainly do. Further, Doflamingo was in his room with the snailsponders of his soon to be dead allies and Monet’s was on call and staring at him as her heart stopped. That is some gut wrenching imagery which made for him getting up and silently walking to his window with his footsteps ringing through our ears to be one of the most tense scenes I can remember. “What is he going to do? A display of emotion? An order to his people out the window he just opened?” I had to ask, and to cut to the girl under him looking everywhere is when my stomach sank. “HE…, HE LEFT……..”, I was speechless and getting chills all over.
I genuinely found admiration for both sides of this conflict even if their actions aren’t the greatest. In these final moments, Law felt like a psychopath to me, whereas Monet and Vergo felt like loyal comrades to the man they look up to, and for Vergo especially, possibly a close friend. And in that moment I realized we entered some morally gray territory that One Piece sometimes touches but is still rare. There’s instances like Marineford which are the peak of this but it’s like, here I get this feeling of gang warfare or something. I cannot wait to see how Doflamingo interacts with the crew and especially Law. I am in anticipation for new episodes in a way I don’t recall feeling for awhile, total emotional investment and a total lack of knowing where this will go making for crazy tension. And I don’t know if we can trust Law. I said he acts tough but was probably a good guy, his old crew loved him and they were sweet, and he saved Luffy on the “spur of the moment” but I do get the feeling he does what benefits him above all else. He saved Smoker because Smoker came in handy, he sets those who go against him up to die. Would he betray Luffy if it advanced his plan? Does he like Luffy enough to see him as more than “useful”? Did he save him because of a future “use” he had in mind? He is supposedly going to throw the world into chaos after this and Doflamingo did suggest Law’s true intent may have been to kill Caesar. The only time I felt this level of suspicion over an ally in One Piece before was when Robin first joined and this is more intense than that.
On top of that, Baby 5 vs Franky has been amazing in a different sense. I said I had hoped Franky would make up for missing out on the chaotic conclusion and he’s been doing it. The first instance of this, to open fire at the strange bird in the sky and throw his Franky Boomerang and such was fantastic, but here was another level. Baby 5 initially showed off how freaking cool she is by forming from her broken missile body into her human body while smoking a cigarette in front of blazing flames of her creation. But then Franky’s theme blares as he appears behind her, punching and singing “I don’t know who you are but… I’m an invincible Iron Pirate! I don’t fight for the peace of the sea! IRON PIRATE!”, everything about it was fabulous. By the way, irrelevant to the scene but relevant to Baby 5, one she cannot deny the Brook panty question of course, but more importantly, what if Sanji asks to marry her and then he ends up fighting Doflamingo for the right to her hand in marriage? Lol!!!! That would be interesting.
So lastly, after coming together in unity as Punk Hazard soldiers, G-5, Law, and Straw Hats and having Zoro cut the blockade, we had the gas chase after them like it’s out of Indiana Jones or something. Law and Robin showed their common interest in calmly evaluating the worst case scenario which was adorable, but it also showed more of Law’s tendency to think of all the possibilities that could come along, quite collected at that, to contrast Luffy’s insane smiling while he rode on the truck. I do deeply like Law at this point. And one last thing, Monet said “poor children” will have to die with her so it kinda added to the theory of her actually caring about them in a warped sense. With her lack of a harpy body when Law first arrived it makes me think we may still learn about her from other characters going forward, she definitely has some intrigue. |
