D'aww, puppy love.

Every episode seems to succeed the previous one. That is the mark of a great story.

I like how Kentaro and Godai are adult and child versions of each other, dealing with almost the same love struggle

^^^ Perhaps this is why this series is SO good, and has somehow attained a score of 8+, which isn’t common for MAL entries.
It’s pretty uncommon for slice-of-life comedies to have this kind of canonical sequence. Even Kimagure Orange Road didn’t have a solid episode-to-episode story line. This show was somewhat of a pioneer for its time.
And I’ve made the observation too… every episode sort of references another. You kind of need to watch it in order… at least, as of the first 10-15 episodes. There are clearly designated arcs.

I really like the dynamic between Godai and Kentaro.
Kentaro seems a bit more mature than a “brat,” and while he’s somewhat antagonistic, much of the time he’s neutral. He also doesn’t ever do anything too extreme, nor does he openly express a desire to ruin Godai’s life.
Meanwhile, Godai is never 100% innocent either, even initiating conflict a couple of times.

I also really like the character Ikuko, the niece of Kyoko. She’s mischievous at times and is clearly still childish in some respects (“Wasn’t I cute?” or “I’m starving!”) ….. and yet, she’s not a brat nor does she attempt to compromise anything. From the start, you could tell that — despite wasting Godai’s time as a tutor to flirt — she’s nice. She acts like such a friend to Kentaro, even inviting him to her house. This is the first time in a LONG time that I’ve seen a young female girl in a slice-of-life anime act so normally, and not antagonistic or bratty or weak or prone to conflict, or being even remotely irritating. The dub helps a lot, giving her the utmost fitting voice.

Also… plot-hole… Ikuko said she had a boyfriend two years old than her on the baseball team or something…
How recent is this? Isn’t her trope or reason for being around to sorta pester Godai every now and then? Because of a crush?

Also… since drunkenly professing his love for her, Godai’s has made some obvious advances towards Kyoko. Grabbing her hand and saying “It’s the same [adult men can love women older than them too]”; plus the time at the bar when he bluntly said “I love you”—when Mitaka was there; what I’m getting at is, every single time, life goes on (nonchalantly) no matter what Godai does. It’s like Kyoko keeps forgetting Godai loves her. How could she be so idiotic saying something like, “It’s common among young boys to develop crushes for older girls,” thinking that wouldn’t initiate something with Godai — thinking Godai and her are in the exact same situation.

You watched the dub, right? In the sub I think Kyoko only mistaken that Ikuko has a boyfriend, but rather Ikuko says it is a crush that she has.

Nice episode, Godai dropping some serious shit and then Kentaro follows it by pissing him off about not being like him.
Never give up on your dream that's sure a classic line but I have to agree with it.

Honestly, Kentaro's arc is handled pretty well. The way Kyoko sensed and treated Kentaro's juvenile crush; how Godai and Kentaro had a silent ceasefire, living in the present, day-dreaming of the future. The correlation between Godai and Soichiro feels like something much more nuanced is handled concerning this matter. Let's see how both Godai's and Kentaro's future vicissitudes tend to be....
