Most misleading first episode?

Gonna go with Ga Rei Zero as well.

This was ESPECIALLY true when the show first aired,

Nowadays it's next to impossible to walk into the first episode without at least some idea or confusion...but when it first aired there was no hint of anything. So it's nowhere near the same experience.

yah iv heard that too. I think its probably more along the lines of the first ep is funny but you need a bit of time to adjust to the comedy to actually start finding entertainment in it.

In my case it was misleading Episode 0. The OVA had a very distinct difference in (Read: Lack of) humor, which almost made me miss out on an amazing series.

Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuutsu/thread.
Seriously, when I was watching first episode it was plain mindfuck, poor animation, weird scene, it looked like some japanese Tommy Wiseau and animated version of The Room... And in tent last second there is Haruhi saying that it was their movie, Kyon! I sat there with eyes wide open, not getting wtf was that :P

lol this would've been me but I watched it in the wrong order at first, I watched episode 1, 2, and 3 then i looked at the readme file and it said I should start from that movie episode... I immediately thought well... fuck me.

Madoka definetly.
Hunter x Hunter. Starts out as a typical shounen, but becomes so much darker than what it seems, specially considering the light colours.

Not only for the first episode but I say first season, struggled to watch the first 24 episodes then i watched episode 25 then time went fast like a roller coaster ride and marathoned the last 220 episodes in a week

Well, for me, the most misleading first episodes are-

Shuffle! ~ I thought it was going to be a typical cutesy harem. I didn't think that at the end. At the end, I thought it was more heartfelt then I originally giving it credit for.

Code Geass ~Well, I originally heard about this series through Death Note, and expected it to be like Death Note, which in a way it is, but not at all. I thought it was just about some crazy person like Light, but this series is more about a character that is more driven to insanity through personal issues. There is a difference.

Ga Rei Zero- I think this one is self explanatory.

Umineko No Naku Koro Ni- I thought it was going to be like Higurashi, but it really isn't. Mores his series deals more with magic and witches and understanding of certain events. Great series overall. Just why did it have to end? ):

Well, those were the ones that mislead me.
