Panchira used to be a commonplace in anime for the most of its existence, but in recent years I don't remember seeing it in anything other than obvious ecchi-oriented titles, so I was really surprised when I saw this in "normal" 2024 anime:

Roshidere ep1. spoiler:

This scene in particular (and everything that was the result of it) ended up being very charming and funny.

I very much approve of Panchira. If I had a female kid I'd name it that.

Liking panties implies liking panchira, I adhere to this logic.

A panty shot in an anime I watched as a kid got me grounded because my mom thought it was pornographic after seeing that for maybe 5 seconds.

But anyway, they're fine? I've never felt like they add much to scenes, but I don't think they subtract much either.

kinda surprised me too. I thought doga kobo is not doing this anymore.

I think there are more non-ecchi that have panchira this/previous season, even original anime like shuumatsu train had some of it.
salad bowl and one room have it too.

i think people forget or just don't know that theres no actual such thing as "ecchi anime" in japan, thats more so a western usage of the term "ecchi" and the idea of "this type of anime should or shouldnt have this" is also more so a western thing

so the people who say dumb shit like "normal anime" are just plain wrong

from what i've learned recently as well, even terms like "shounen" we don't use entirely correctly

Good ecchi is not bad. Well done panchira moment is always nice to see in a show.

I think using it with reserve on how often it is used has more effect whether the intent is to be sexually appealing or for a character to look natural and realistic to the audience.

A tiny bit of fanservice/ecchi scene wouldn't sound bad for a romcom - like other shows would do anyway, I'm good for it.

@Zarutaku

iirc they DO reference what we call ecchi anime, but idr the term

regardless, its just more so about the anime having more than most than something exclusive to a genre as the west likes to think

It's good when it happens when you least expect it.
It's bad if it's overused and happens every 30 seconds.

Depends. 14-year-old me ate that shit up, but now I don't mind it as long as it's used sparingly, depending on the tone of the show. If it happens every other frame like in Agent Aika or Najica Blitz Tactics it just becomes silly.
Some of you never watched Bakugan Battle Brawlers on TeleToon in 2008 and it shows.

@ryan77999 Aika is one of the few ecchi titles I genuinely disliked. Lot's of fan-service and yet not a single aesthetically pleasing scene or shot.

It all depends on the context, you can hardly talk as if it's a singular phenomenon. You have "serves a narrative purpose", "fanservice", and "just happens sometimes when someone in a short skirt is jumping about etc." It's the last of those which doesn't happen any more, something like original Sailor Moon has a "who cares, we all wear them" attitude which you'd never see on a modern anime.

While I understand why people get so excited about these panty shots, the sight of exposed underwear in particular is just not very appealing to me. I even find it quite unpleasant if the anime is just rubbing them into my face and when characters act all perverted around it.

In the mentioned scene from Alya Sometimes Hides Her Feelings in Russian ep1, I actually found it quite funny due to the resulting conversation in one of the next scenes. The close-up shot definitely helped me getting the joke, otherwise I wouldn't even have noticed the fact that she exposed her panties. I didn't mind the scene, showing them wasn't lewd either.

I definitely prefer if the panties are only shown to the other characters and not to me directly. I don't need to see them myself.

What's your opinion on panchira?

that i am likely among the Dissapearingly-Few left out there, - here in the 2020's -
that still actually feel that Good Old-Fashioned Angelically-Innocent Ladylike Panties are the Very Best~

I can take it or leave it, but I find it funny how they go out of their way to cover them. The black void, anti-gravity skirts. So on. I was watching the Nier Automata anime, and they would keep that shirt in place as much as possible, even with wind blowing, only ever showing an upskirt if 2B was doing a high kick or something. And I know there's a thing in the game that gives you shit for trying to look, but still.

I especially find this funny in two specific instances. When a show has a lot of violence but acts like showing panties is somehow worse. And when a show has a fair amount of fanservice moments but still refuses to show them. Ironically in any case, censoring it is worse than not because it implies that all these girls aren't wearing anything.

@MasterTasuke Oh no, I find it kinda annoying. I just learned to laugh at the stupidity of it. No one would ever go that far to censor a guys underwear in any circumstance.

More or less the same as well as how its done in terms of context, but I generally don't care or mind either way.
