What are some examples of Anime, that you thought were a standalone or finished story, but then realised there are more things that connect to it?

Ghost in the Shell has, like, a movie and a remastered movie, then a series, and then more movies and CGI, and I can't keep up.

most people don't know that Lain is a multimedia project with a tie-in PSX game, short manga and art books that give even more detail.

Elfen Lied was adapted from a much longer manga (that upon the show's release hadn't even been finished) that is much better written with more focus on the characters's relationships.

lots of people watch School Days and dislike it but it was adapted from a visual novel with several routes, none of which involve nice boats. with some work, you can actually make Makoto behave slightly more like a functioning member of society.

it's hardly made clear at all but Boogiepop Phantom is a spinoff of the mainline light novels and it's best to have read at least the first light novel before watching it.

Everyone I know who has read the manga says the anime is way better. It's interesting that the community seems to be split on this.

Basically none. I didn't begin watching a lot of anime until I discovered MAL, which has related entries clearly listed on each page.

I didn't know as a kid that Astro Boy, Dragon Ball, and Cardcaptors were created by people who had also created other anime.

I didn't know Howl's Moving Castle had a sequel book until I happened to encounter it at the store. This was relatively soon after the movie's release.

I watched Darker than Black around 2013-14 and didn't find out that there were OVAs and a whole-ass 2nd Season until after I joined MAL in 2018... still haven't gotten around to watching those, though.

@Zarutaku they are not related at all plot-wise

They just have the same writer

Nasu verse. I guess I know about the connections but there is just so many of them that it's possible that most people don't know about it.

Technically aren't related, but it was mind-blowing to learn evangelion inspired digimon tamers, evangelion is a masterpiece but it wouldn't be half as fun for me to see it without seeing how it inspired digimon (guilmon's evolution line is based on eva01 being the best thing)

@Bruh69XD There's a crossover side story of the Monogatari LN where Araragi encounters Hitei, a side character of Katanagatari, that's all I know.

For me, it was Steins;Gate. I was kinda shocked to learn that the source material was part of a big interconnected visual novel franchise called "Science Adventure". At some point I'm going to go through all of them, but for now, I've only played Chaos;Head.

After finishing Puella Magi Madoka Magica for the first time, I decided to read more about it on the Puella Magi Wiki, and it's interesting that there are some manga that feature other stories that take place in Madoka's world.

  • Kazumi Magica
  • Oriko Magica
  • Suzune Magica
  • Tart Magica

Plus, there is the Magia Record video game that got an anime adaptation in 2020-2022.
I am using the best palette swap.

The Nasu-verse:Fate/, Tsukihime, Garden of Sinners, Lord El Melloi II's Case Files, and The Witch on the Holy Night are related through it's characters or their families

X: TV, Cardcaptor Sakura, Chobits, and XXXHolic are all related through Tsubasa Resevoir Chronicle

@pablown The movie is a spin-off with a new cast though. Though it's still an awesome movie.

Pluto - I didn't really look up into it before watching - only knew it's made by same writer as Monster - so I was surprised when I realized that it's a story of Astro Boy.

Gegege no Kitaro - I watched it on TV as a kid. When I saw the announcement of the 2018 version, I thought it was a remake to the old one I watched years ago but it turns out there's a version of this series every decade since 1960s I think. I don't even know which version I watched as a kid but most likely the 90s one.

Durarara and Baccano, although taking place in different time periods and on different continents (and having unrelated stories), are in the same universe. The novels both were based on were written by the same author, and both series were directed by the same person.
Isaac and Miria from Baccano actually have a small cameo in Durarara

Cowboy Bebop and Carole & Tuesday supposedly take place in the same universe, and share the same director, but there’s even less a connection there than with Baccano and Durarara.

Not necessarily a direct connection, but it always catches me off guard when series with different art styles have the same writer. I kinda forget sometimes that the author and the artist aren't always the same person.

@Lucifrost It's how it influenced, seeing that there is anything similar to a show that was my favourite since I was 7 years old felt amazing, also it is how I discovered evangelion (kind of) so I didn't know how important it was

This is why on MAL is more important to check the Related Entries section for an anime than the Score section.

@alshu Sadly you can miss things even with that.

Akudama drive has a manga that I had no idea existed, which isn't on mal, because it doesn't have a physical release.

For a couple of years I assumed that the 2006 Stand Alone Complex TV movie for Ghost in the Shell called Solid State Society was a recap, but it is a continuation of the second season.

Also, I assume everyone remembers the third Team Rocket stooge:
