I just bought another HD. A 500GB HD, anyone else bought this much storage just for anime? I have most of my anime on DVD anyway... I have a 2 meter shelf which is nearly full up with anime I've purchased.

I've got two external hard drives - a 350 and a 500gb. They're both full and I've got about 80 gigs of space devoted to torrents on my internal drive. A little of that is music though, and some manga.

I've been downloading onto my 500gb HDD for a while now.

I lost 35gigs off the bat though due to overhead, since when it arrived it only had 465gb of space. ;_;

That's lost due to formatting... Every HD loses a bit for formatting. Check any other drive you have they won't be exactly 80GB. The bigger the HD the more you lose. They shoudl make HD's bigger and account for loss of room due to formatting.

Erm, no.... A 500GB HD has 500 "Giga" byte (=500000000000 byte). They actually use 1000 instead of 1024 for kilo. So they aren't actually wrong when they call it 500GB. Not that I know why they do it that way. To calculate how much Gigabyte you have, you just multiply number of GB with 1000^3/1024^3.

And for the topic... I just bought a 22" widescreen to my computer. Not especially for watching anime, but it's great for that as well. And my HDs, I have 840GB totally. I don't have one just for anime, I use 'em for what I need room for at that moment, if I need more space for a game, then I use it for that game.

Last time i went to fry's i bought a hard drive solely for anime. More specifically, for those really long series like Detective Conan, Bleach, etc. It was a 300 GB one i think.

Because they are using SI prefix (decimal) when they should use IEC prefix (binary)

SI (base10):
giga = 10^9 = 1000000000

IEC (base2):
gibi = 2^30 = 1073741824

so 500 GB = 465 GiB
.

There's a little lost due to the file tables and such though, if I'm not mistaken. That said, the real reason is money. If they can get away with selling you less, why give you the full 500 gigs?

Usually if i like a series i'll burn it, check then delete. Having so much on my HD has killed my computer @__@

I've seen this post at least 3-4 times now but i digress....

...just bought a 50 back of lightscribes the otherday ^_^

50pk of lighscribe dvds (approx 235GB) for $26.99 is much better than spending $150+ for a 500gb hd.

I can get a 100 pack of dvd+r's for $23-25 and a 500 gb HD for $114.

If I were to pick one, I rather have the HD. I don't burn every series I download, so having the HD space is much more convenient.

Bought a 500G Western Digital (the one that looks like a book) for $180. It was cheaper than getting the 1 Terabyte for $450. And it's cute too.

BTW. How does burning stuff on DVDs work? Can someone give me advice on which type of DVDs to buy and what program to use to burn them?

To be honest I don't really have shelf space to store the DVDs on that's why I bought the 500G HD and it's already 150G used in 2 weeks. /sigh.

If you like watching censored TV releases on streaming websites instead of superior bluray encodes, and if you don't want to safeguard yourself for the internet apocalypse, then sure - there's no need for HDDs. But that's not very smart.

I hope they release those 50TB HDDs by the end of this decade. My 20TB is getting almost full.

I was gonna say 500 GB isn't very much, then I saw this thread was from 2007 lol. I use a 5 TB external HDD and that's almost full now. I looked up getting a second but they want $135 now. It was $99 when I got mine three years ago so that's kinda a big jump in price.

I kneel, I haven't downloaded anime in a long time but I might start soon. I have a 1TB ready and all, but I might start to burn some of them into BD, just so I can use them on other platforms, and also to let my external HDD available whenever my PC makes a whupsiedupsie and I have to save my old stuff in the drive

Wow.. someone reviving an old post.. well since its revived.. Here are the ones I usually carry [office or in the field]..

I took this image when had a similar conversation with a friend couple of years back.. I stream at 1080p and store at 720p, so not much space is needed.. have some 772 anime titles stored [~760 GB]..
But 2007 huh.. back then I was in 4th grade/class.. and the only PC I had access to was the one at school.. 500GB for then.. for me is like couple of 8TB SSDs now lol..

500GB in 2024 is basically nothing for media, but in 2007 an episode could weigh at most 100MB so it was sort of reasonable back then.
