Anime Relations: Inferno Cop
Now, this is not a continuation off my last blog entry "Old vs New". I haven't quite gotten to thinking how I'm gonna write that one yet. This one is about a rating style or specific that was the topic of a quite heated debate some time back and of course, I was part of that. Unfortunately, I ended up on the losing side since I had nothing to reply with to my opponent in the debate.

Here is the debate for a more clear view of it: Should "Enjoyment" be taken as a factor for rating or should it not? I was, of course, on the "Should Be" side. My argument was, even if an anime had a bad plot or characters, if you enjoyed it well enough, you can rate it highly. The counter argument was that Enjoyment was not a factor. That it is a feeling we get when it's other factors are good enough. At that time, I didn't have a counter-argument for this. But now I do.

Enjoyment is a feeling. Yes, that much I agree with. But is it a feeling that we get when certain factors of said medium of entertainment is good enough? No, I do not agree. Want an example; Inferno Cop. Seriously speaking; there is nothing in that series that is "good". But it still provides good entertainment. Why? Because "It's so bad, It's good."

I'm gonna use another example to further my argument. What is taste? Where does it come from (I know we taste with our tongue, so no snarky remarks)? Is food delicious because it is made good? Certainly, that is a factor, but that alone is not it, is it? I was eating a piece of chicken yesterday. It was well made, but I didn't like it (I love chicken btw, so that's not the reason).

Taste is like Enjoyment. It is an opinion, a feeling. Therefore, the same should apply to enjoyment, no? Another example; I love cheering for underdogs in sports. Mostly the better team plays well, but I can't help but enjoy the underdog's playing more. Take FC Barcelona, for example. I hate the team, but there is no denying they are one of the best teams in the world at the moment. Their passing, their footwork, their teamwork, their referees is all brilliant. But I still get bored with their football.

Why is this so? Here's the reason. It is because enjoyment is a feeling, an opinion. Our "Enjoyment Value" represents not a particular factor, but rather a feeling we have towards a particular form of entertainment.

P.S. Would this do better as a thread in the Anime Discussion section?

January 25th, 2013
Well, I was thinking about writing a blog, but I just couldn't, for the life of me, think of a good enough topic to talk about. Then I remembered a topic that had been embezzled with posts arguing about which was better. The topic itself was started by a troll intention as the initial comparison made by the opener was rather unfair--- wait, why am I talking about that thread? Anyways, the debate's topic was "Which is better, the art style of the old generation (as in '95 and before) or the art style of now ('96 and till today and continuing).

Now, the most common point the "old generation" fans (I'll call them Nostalgia-fans from now on, just to make it easier for me to write, so please don't get mad at me. I'm not insulting you guys) were making was that characters all look the same in today's anime. This is, to a certain extent, true. For example, Yuusha from Maoyuu (2013) and Kirito from SAO (2012) look very similar, as made clear by one of the Nostalgia-fans on the aforementioned thread.

The "new generation" fans (I'll call them T-fans, as in Today-fans) responded that it is not completely true, which is also true. Take Kogami Shinya from Psycho-Pass (2012), for example, and compare him to other leads from that year. In fact, Kirito to Yuusha was the only reference the Nostaliga-fans (I'll cut this down to N-fans, yes I'm lazy. Deal with it) could make in the thread.

The N-fans then responded that the today's MCs look like wimps, with the main example being Ouma Shu from Guilty Crown (2011) and the above mentioned Kirito. But then again, why would you want a 15 year old to look like Goku? If you want a character (that look) like Goku, why not try Toriko?

Now, the point I'm trying to make is, the character design depends on the series, not the generation. Take Kogami Shinya for example. The guy's got a pretty mean looking body. He's a cop (or a criminal-cop), thus the appearance befitting that. Then take Kirito, who is but a nerdy 15-year old, whose main source of living is inside that of a computer. Why would he be jacked as shit?

Now for some examples from the older generation. Take Goku. He is buff. Why? If he's gonna be the strongest in the world (later the universe), he's gotta look the part. If you ask me, Trunks and Goten's designs looked awkward to me (they were kids for god's sake). Moving on, take Shinji Ikari. He's a high-schooler, does he have the body of a martial artist? Does he have a buffed up body befitting that of the world's strongest? No, he looked just like how a normal high-schooler would look like.

Since there is more to the topic (and I'm too lazy to write anymore right now), I'll bring the next part of this rather controversial topic later in another blog.
