Most of the reviews you see on this show are low scores from people that didn't even watch the whole anime, which is a shame.
This is a romance/supernatural/drama that does what it tries to do very well. The main characters are compelling, the OST is very fitting, and the art style is gorgeous.

You should definitely check it out, even if you usually don't like romances, this one is a very compelling story with interesting supernatural elements.

My personal rating would be 8.5/10, can't wait for the next season (which was already announced btw).

PS: The OP and ED songs are beautiful, at least check those out, it's ... worth it.

An excellent show that highlights the psychology of women and should be a must watch for any man.

If you are a man who's been nice to a woman suffering from familial abuse for many years, to the point that she develops feelings for you. None of that will matter, because the moment she encounters a man who is better looking, richer and of higher status, she'll instantly forget about you.

Based blackpill anime.

Oh, I should probably mention that there's also some supernatural elements thrown in as well. As well as something about aristocrats marrying for political reasons, but they're not very important to the message.

If you are finding a non high school romance anime than this anime is for you.

My Happy Marriage is a romance anime, Story is very similar with Cinderella. Main character is abused my her step mother and step sister but then her life is fully changed by a marriage proposal. But the proposal is from a man who does not trust any woman and considered very cold hearted will our main character marry her ? Now from this point you have to watch this anime to figured it out.

Some scenes are annoying, but you can ignore that.

Aw, hell yeah!! People, I cannot understate how much I've wanted to talk about My Happy Marriage since I first discovered the light novels in 2022. I first encountered the series when ANN writer Rebecca Silverman wrote a review of the first light novel, and I read a preview of it on Amazon, but was a little put off by something one of the characters said to the main character Miyo early on. Luckily, someone on the forums explained the context to me, and I decided to give it another chance...and since then, I haven't looked back. I own all the light novels and manga ... volumes that are out in the US right now, with intent to get more in the future. So yeah, when it was revealed an anime was going to be announced, I was all in, more so when it was announced that it'd be streaming weekly on Netflix with an English dub. Did you really think I wasn't going to watch it after the light novels and manga won me over? Considering how shoujo anime in general tend to get neglected and are hardly given much of a chance, both in their home country and overseas, ESPECIALLY overseas, it's quite honestly a modern miracle that Netflix of America even considered giving it an English dub at all. It wound up being a good move on Netflix's part, because My Happy Marriage's anime adaptation is not only hugely successful in Japan, as evidenced by all the merchandise made for it, it also managed to consistently top Netflix's most watched series in the US in the weeks that it aired. That just goes to show that if you actually give shoujo series a chance and actually take the time to promote and market them, they can be successful! Anime for girls are valid too, y'know!!

Granted, considering My Happy Marriage is largely a Cinderella-type story first and foremost, its premise is fairly rote, and nothing you haven't heard before: 19-year-old Miyo Saimori's life has been hell for as long as she can remember. Born without the gift of being able to see monsters or use psychic powers, she is treated less than a servant in her noble house. Her father ignores her, and her stepmother and stepsister take delight in tormenting her every chance they get. As a result, Miyo is dead inside. Even the one light of hope she has, her childhood friend Koji Tatsuishi, is taken from her, set to be engaged to her younger sister in a political marriage. To make things worse, Miyo's father tells her that she is going to be married off to a powerful military commander named Kiyoka Kudo, who has a reputation of being so cruel and heartless that he drove off previous brides-to-be all within days of their engagements. With no home to return to, Miyo resigns herself to her fate—and soon finds that her pale and beautiful husband-to-be is anything but the monster she expected, even if he is rather brusque and blunt. As they slowly open their hearts to each other, both realize the other may be their chance at finding true love and happiness.

From an animation standpoint, My Happy Marriage is not only given amazing production values by virtue of being animated by Kinema Citrus, it really feels true to the overall look and vibe of the light novels, and even the manga by extension. Character animation is subdued, preferring subtlety and characterization over stylized bombast, the setting is well rendered and well researched, with nothing that betrays the time period its in (the light novel writer mentioned that the series takes place in an alternate Meiji/Taisho era), and the series does make great use of both lighting and the environment to show the characters' emotional states. In the first episode, the colors and lighting are all bleak, muted, and use earthy, rustic colors to convey Miyo's complete and utter despair in the bad environment she lives in. In contrast, when she leaves the house and experiences life with the Kudos, the lighting is brighter, the colors are more vivid, and the world around her comes to life. Kinema Citrus and Kadokawa even put out a short behind-the-scenes video showing the process behind the show's production, which you can watch on YouTube. The character designs are true to the novels, and mostly period accurate, and a lot of emphasis is put on things like subtle facial expressions and body language. Then again, with some exceptions, My Happy Marriage eschews histrionics and exaggeration in favor of subtlety and atmosphere. I only have one gripe with the animation: What's with the mismatched hair color highlights? Miyo, Koji, Yurie, Kaya, and Kazushi don't have this problem since the shading on their hair matches their actual hair color, but for some reason, everybody else has highlights colored in ways that clash against their actual hair colors, making them look like they're wearing colored headbands, with the biggest offenders being the ones on the Kudos. I mean, blue highlights on ash brown hair? Dark pink on blonde? Olive green against black hair? Really? Not only do these make them look like they have colored halos floating over their heads, they clash horribly against their actual hair colors and looks really jarring in what's supposed to be a low-key period piece with a touch of fantasy.

The soundtrack is also really nice, and a lot more versatile than you'd initially assume. Acoustic guitar, violins, kotos, pianos, you name it, it was used for the OST courtesy of Evan Call, and the opening and ending sequences are great, not just in their music but the imagery used for them. Of course, you can't have a solid show without good characters to back it up, and on this front, I feel My Happy Marriage manages fairly well. The main characters—Miyo and Kiyoka—are great, three-dimensional individuals who grow and change even across the series' short tenure and manage to carry the series perfectly, rounded out by equally colorful side characters such as Yurie, Hazuki, and Godo, who manage to help them in their own ways. I wouldn't have been invested in them had I not read both the light novels and manga beforehand, and the anime maintains their characterization from the source, never betraying who they are. Some may argue that Miyo's family, the Saimoris and Koji's father Minoru, are shallow villains who are just there to be evil, and I can understand where they're coming from, and in a lesser story, that would absolutely be a detriment. However...would making them more nuanced and sympathetic really work in this case, though? Giving them additional backstory and sympathetic traits wouldn't change the fact that they treat Miyo like shit over stuff that's not her fault, and unlike, say, Hawkmoth from Miraculous Ladybug who doesn't really bother to do anything to the heroes aside from corrupt people and hide in his hideout, the Saimoris actually do try to get stuff done, and even succeed at some points. Yes, the Saimoris and Minoru Tatsuishi are as stereotypical as you can get, with the slight exception of Kaya, but the series is aware of this and knew that it needed villains like them to really do what it wanted to do. Plus, it's not like they don't have their own motivations for what they do, petty as they are (Something that the series itself points out via Kiyoka), so whether you like the villains in this show or not, they are used to good effect here and fulfill their roles just fine. I know I'm perfectly content with hating the Saimoris for being so cruel to Miyo, and that's what the series wants you to feel.

If you've read this far in, you're probably thinking "Come on! How is My Happy Marriage different from every other Cinderella-type story that's come before it? What could MHM possibly offer in an age where we get adaptations of Cinderella on the regular? What does MHM have to say that other stories like it haven't said already?" That, my friend, is actually an easier question to answer than you think. Most Cinderella stories tend to just end with the happily ever after, giving the message that just shacking up with a handsome prince will solve all her problems, and we all know real life doesn't work like that. Furthermore, not every Cinderella adaptation does this, but just as many tend to make the heroine seem a little too well-adjusted for her own good. Seriously, with all the abuse Cinderella was made to endure over possibly a decade, one would think that she'd develop serious psychological and emotional problems. My Happy Marriage decides to zero in on exactly that, showing that yes, all the abuse Miyo went through completely destroyed any semblance of self-esteem and self-worth she could have developed, making it extremely clear that no, marrying her off to a guy who appreciates her isn't going to solve all her problems. That's not how healing works, and I admit I'm not a psychologist so I can't claim to be an expert on the subject, but anybody who's ever read actual medical/scientific studies on how abuse can affect people mentally, or even autobiographies written by people who experienced it first hand, can easily glean that the road to healing is a slow climb. Everything, from the original light novels, to the manga, and the anime acknowledge this, and it shows in Miyo's character development through the series. Even as her life gets better, she still remains a shy, quiet young woman, and sometimes falls back into old, self-destructive habits and thought processes. Her progress is slow, but progress is still progress, even with setbacks. My Happy Marriage isn't solely about the romance, nor does it present the idea that the romance in and of itself can solve all of Miyo's problems. It takes kindness, a support network, and taking the steps to leave the toxic environment in order for healing to truly take place, and to me, that's what makes My Happy Marriage stand out from other Cinderella stories, because it really goes deep into how decades of abuse can shape a person's psyche. Granted, because the pace in which Miyo grows and regains her autonomy is deliberately slow, impatient people may be quick to dismiss Miyo as being passive, spineless, whiny, and weak even after she displays some degree of growth because it's apparently not fast or blatant enough for them. Seriously, if you think Miyo is spineless and weak, just watch the second episode of Bibliophile Princess. Elianna's got Miyo beat in the passivity competition.

Can you tell I love this series yet? Other than that one animation quibble I mentioned above, the only other flaw the anime has is more to do with the fact that it leaves out some additional context and backstory for some characters in the latter half of the series. Some of it isn't too bad, like with Kiyoka's sister Hazuki, but for some, like Miyo's extended family the Usubas, the removal of some context behind their actions makes the characters in question come off a lot more morally questionable and less sympathetic than they were in the light novel. I know it's inevitable that some things have to be left out when working on an anime, especially a series that's 12 episodes long and doesn't allow for a lot of time to flesh everything out, but I do feel like the second half of the series could have benefited even from an extra episode to smooth things out and not rush through the second arc. Hell, some may argue that the whole supernatural powers subplot in the second half feels extraneous. I don't, as they were pretty established early on (Though the anime doesn't do so until episode 2), and later novels dive into them a bit more. My Happy Marriage may not be a series for everyone, but there are reasons why it managed to get so popular, and you know what? I'm damn happy that branches of Netflix outside Japan gave it a chance and actually bothered to make it accessible to people, whether it be dubbing it or actually bothering to put some effort into promoting it! Anime for girls deserve the same chances as the popular shounen anime. The fact that a third season of Kimi no Todoke was just announced, with plans for it to air on Netflix, alongside adaptations for stuff like A Sign of Affection and Apothecary Diaries coming up gives me hope that a comeback for shoujo or female-led anime is in the cards.

Shojo was always hit or miss for me: some of them I like, but sometimes I can't comprehend the affection other shojo get. On the other hand, My Happy Marriage is doing something different from the standard formula and insert some elements from other genres. As such, the show ended up being quite diverse, given its length, and quirky thus harder to recommend to someone.

The central place of the story is Saimori clan. The main protagonist, Miyo, is a daughter of that clan and her story is similar to Cinderella's: she has an abusive stepmom and stepsister, she's treated like a servant, her life is ... neverending suffering. But one day she gets a chance to marry someone who doesn't treat her like a nuisance and escape her household. At this point, the plot seems to be settled and the rest of the episodes will be a typical shojo romance and it's perfectly align with the tittle. However, every now and then some bits of supernatural were popping up. And after a certain episode the anime suddenly changes the genre and becomes action-heavy with supernatural elements. Even so I like that change, that makes me wonder what audience it is made for. If you are a romance enjoyer you will be put off by the later episodes. If you want an intense action-thriller, you have to bear with the first episodes and even after that the pacing remains slow.

Every Saimori family member except for the main girl is one dimensional, the author deliberately makes them behave like absolute morons even so they have no reasons to do so. The main reason of abusing is her lack of supernatural abilities and therefore they can't squeeze out enough betrothal money. For starters, her mother is a daughter of Usaba clan, which posses rare, powerful supernatural abilities, and Miyo's children can possibly possess them. Second, because of that she is wanted by several family clans, so her family could easily pump up a price. Sticking to that reasoning, it makes her status much higher than just a servant and maybe even her stepsister.

Miyo herself is very shy and insecure and overcoming her trauma is the main goal of that season. Her husband is incredulous with strangers so their first meeting looks out of place, but he becomes more cordial and welcoming as time passes. The other characters seem to play a big role in the future season, on the other hand they come off as functional in this season.

It's almost become a tradition that every season some underdog anime gets surprisingly good production and My Happy Marriage is here to keep that tradition. Not only fights look stunning, but backgrounds or small details like clothes and applying a cosmetics as well. The OP and ED are done well, the ost is a good addition but, by itself, is pretty low-key.

I didn't expect I would like this anime that much, so I glad that the second season got announced. The main thing I like about My Happy Marriage that it uses the first part (shojo romance) as a base for further large scale events. And if you vibe with the main duo and aren't put off by the change in genre, you will probably like it.

It’s not hard to see why this became such a break-out hit of the season. This anime features what is easily the most adorable romance of the season. It has some of the sweetest moments I’ve seen in a long time, and I spent a lot of the early series grinning ear to ear as I watched. So goddamn cute. Miyo’s development over the series makes her an easy stand-out as well, showing her conquering personal demons in a way that felt real despite the fantasy world.

The rest of the series is a bit more of a mixed bag for me tbh. I found ... most of the villains to be very one-note and we never got to see any of them become something more. Even antagonists that I thought the series was telegraphing as more complex and interesting ended up being pretty basic, minus one of the later ones. That being said, when this series pushes the comeuppance button, the catharsis is awesome. I loved watching it play out.

And speaking of that, the animation in this series is beautiful and the magic on display, though little explained, is pretty great to watch. The few times it’s used with high technical expertise are a real treat. Conversely, I found the grosesqueries, a sort of everyone villain, to be rather poorly explained and largely just there as an excuse to give Kudo something to do, establish his power and put him in danger. And speaking of Kudo, even if even though he comes off a bit too much as the knight in shining armor for much of the series, I think he gets enough interesting development to make him distinct and interesting.

Overall, it’s a really good series, just feels like it’s missing a little too much for me to call it great. Right on the border with it, though.

I skimmed some of the reviews that criticize the characterization of the main female lead and mention poor plot points/predictable events.

The main criticisms of Mio seem to be that she is "weak" and "illogical". However, she is actually a perfect depiction of a young adult who was abused through her entire childhood and now suffers from some degree of PTSD, fears of abandonment, and an anxious-avoidant attachment style. This in itself, if the character shows no progress, can make for a very brutal watch -- however, Mio is shown to gradually improve by reflecting on herself as the show progresses, and she makes tremendous progress ... in the 12 episodes. Some people have complained that it feels like the ML has swooped in and "saved" her, but to me it never felt like that -- instead, the scenes conveyed that experiencing true human care for the first time in a long time from multiple people made her reflect on herself and what she wanted from life. They both care for each other, and it shows through their actions as they stumble forwards figuring out how to communicate with each other. The interesting thing here is that ML does not make any grandiose gestures or dramatic proclamations -- instead, he slowly gets to know her as another person and tries to move forward in communicating with her to support her through overcoming her traumas. Sometimes, human partnerships can be as simple as finding peace in coexisting with someone, and I think this works well with the fictional time period that this anime portrays (with arranged marriages being the norm, and couples developing affection for each other by being live-in fiancees). (Side note: we have a very diverse female cast in this series, so it is a nice contrast with Mio so that the show is not saturated with the weak women stereotypes).

The criticisms of the plot include that it is predictable, world-building is poor/uninteresting, and "nothing happens". For the most part, I agree. However, a predictable plot does not necessarily mean bad storytelling -- the events unfold similar to the way they do in other stories, but you watch the characters respond to them in ways develop their relationship. The choice of magic in this world felt a little shoe-horned, but it was not offensive enough to dislike. It was integrated well enough that it felt natural as part of the setting, and provided a good tie-in for the overall plot points. If it feels like nothing happens during this anime, that might mean it's just not the right type of media for you. This story does not revolve around action, it revolves around the intangible changes in people and their relationships.

Overall, I found it beautiful.

As a fan of romance, I feel like the long drought has finally ended. Not only did we get a love story not set in high school, it's also a period piece with supernatural twist. This is the Japanese version of Cinderella in a world where superpower define your status.

My Happy Marriage at its core is a story of a victim overcoming her abusive past to find value in herself through love and kindness. Miyo, the FL, lives a life of abuse under her rich family scrutiny due to her lack of superpower sight. Her evil step mother and step sister physically / ... verbally abuse her daily, while her real father only show contempt. Until one day, she gets send away in place of her sister to be the wife of a infamous heartless commander Kudou. The story is as cliche as it gets, but every beat still hits.
What makes it works so well is how vulnerable Miyo was in the beginning. Of course, someone who was abuse all their life and barely received any love would be in the state of constant self deprecating. Every moment of kindness towards her felt rewarding to watch. Even as she received more love, old habits die hard and her growth journey really takes time to heal. I appreciate that nuance so much, even though it can be frustrating.


Animation: 8/10
Certainly, the best part of the show. I still remembered seeing the thumbnail of this anime announcement trailer on YouTube almost a year ago and instantly clicked (it shows the ML Kudou lol). It was so beautifully animated that I just couldn't wait, and searched for the manga right away. The art in the anime certainly surpass it origin. It was so beautifully drawn in the key moments of romance and superpower. Still, the quality is not consistent in every scene (very nitpicky, but I find some walking scenes a bit weird). The direction focus on fanservice quite a lot (I like the ML being cool scenes, that's even why I started watching, but it made you feel less tension).

V/A really sets the tone of each character's stereotype. I especially like Miyo's voice cause she almost always sound shaky until she gradually grows out of her shell.

The art style for OP and ED was gorgeous. Especially the OP, makes me emotional every time, it gets you into the mood of the story going between melancholy and hopeful. The songs were both beautiful.

A great fairytale-like escapism. My Happy Mariage might not be the best anime ever, but it's certainly a step up from most romance anime. I wished more shoujo/romance stories received this much care and budget.

This was my favorite anime of its cour. I looked forward to it every week and it always delivered. While it is another Cinderella-type story, the magic elements and shift in narrative into its own story help keep it from becoming stale. I liked how the story unfolded and the transition that occurred part way through the cour. The characters were also engaging and endearing. I really enjoyed Miyo's character arc this cour. That said, I do think if you're the type of viewer who doesn't like quiet, hesitant, and/or abused characters, you might find frustration with her. I am 100% hyped to find that ... there will be a second season. I can't wait for it to arrive.

If you like fairytales with familiar and unique elements and want a romance anime where the main conflict isn't a triangle, then you will probably enjoy this anime as much as I did.

I wasn't sure what I was in for when I started watching this. It has a bit of a Fruits Basket vibe, especially in some of the darker moments. Miyo is a treasure! She went through so much and deserves to be happy! I appreciate the depth the writer brought to each character. It really made a kind of small world feel so warm and real. On top of that, the artwork is stunning! I caught myself taking it all in during some of the much-needed moments of reflection.

I would highly recommend this to anyone looking for some drama and romance! Not to compare ... it again to Fruits Basket, but FB is one of my favs, and I feel that the art style, themes, and characters could all fit comfortably in that same world. I saw someone else in the reviews say it's just another Cinderella clone. There is a step-sister, an evil stepmother, and an unwanted child who gets out to find happiness, but there are also demon-like "Grotest" fights, power users, political struggles and bloodline disputes. The "Prince" is a much deeper character than just a "Price Charming" and it's incredible to watch the growth between the two. Are there some similarities? Sure, absolutely, but this interpretation is just so much more.

It's like Cinderella with Demon Slayer aspects and the depth of Inception. Something like that. I really loved it, and recommend it!

Can't wait for Season 2! :)

The duality of man.

As cliche as the main characters family might seem, this kind of hatred and trauma can only break down a person so much.

If you're looking for something joyful and uplifting, you aren't going to find it in these first four episodes. My Happy Marriage (2023) is an anime about a young womens journey of healing. There is going to be heart breaks. There is going to be sleepless nights. But I do think that it is possible for the main character to make a recovery.

The art style in this anime is very beautiful. Everything is tinted pink to match the ... cherry blossom flowers. The character designs are very appealing to those wanting to pick their next series based on the art style.

The cast in this show are like night and day. Several of the characters are unlikable, but I'm sure the writers intended for them to be. While on the other hand, there are other characters who want nothing but the best for each other and want to raise everyone's spirits.

The sound is very simple, yet roaring when it needs to be. The hype surrounding this show is deserved. Everything feels right in place and this anime has great potential to become an instant classic in the anime community- if ended perfectly.

I would say that for now, this is a show every seasonal watcher should keep their eyes on.

There is something "Ghibliesque" in this series and I love it! The artwork is incredible and sometimes somewhat similar to Ghibli's yet it's also very self-affirming and not at all a cheap imitation. I first got this impression from the facial expressions of the Kimono shop's owner in episode 3. They were drawn with such care! And then there's this attention to detail very few studios still bother with these days: the way the edges of the chair were spent from use in the final scene of episode 4 or how Kouji's shoe bounces from his foot after he's smashed into the ground are details ... that come to my mind.
The story so far has been really interesting and engaging and I'm really excited as it appears we have just begun to scratch the surface!!

Is there such a thing as a "happy marriage"? We should ask ourselves this because even if marriage is not an idea you ever had in mind, what does marriage really bring? Based on the manga of the same name, we are greeted with a show that details what really brings happiness to a person's life.
The MAL synopsis of the show definitely paints a miserable picture into the life of female protagonist Miyo Saimori. What's worse is that her situation is out of her control. The way that she has been mistreated by her current family is a sharp contrast to Miyo's mother. I'll ... get to this later but for now, let's just say that Miyo's life is nothing but filled with trouble and misery. That, is until she is married to a man name Kiyoka Kudou. To her delight, this turned out to be the best thing to happen to her in this timeline because Kiyoka represents the light in her dark tunnel.

Watching My Happy Marriage as an anime only watcher shows that human emotions can truly be fragile. Miyo has to endure physically and mentally the abuse of characters such as her own grandmother and the her half-sister, Kaya Saimori. Early episodes shows that she is not respected or treated equal among the family. It reminds me of the Cinderella story of a kind young woman being mistreated, only we don't have the magic pumpkins or glass slippers. Instead, we get Kiyoka Kudou, a man who was assumed to have a reputation of being a tyrant. In reality, Kiyoka is a strong willed young man who is kind and respectful especially towards Miyo. He serves not just as Miyo's husband but also her protector. Without him, it's easy to say the life of Miyo would be much more miserable. This is evidenced in one episode when Kaya took extreme measures to ruin Miyo's life. And this just goes to show that humans emotions in this anime really has no bounds. The character relationship and chemistry between Miyo and Kiyoka is undeniable however. From the start, it felt like the two knew each other and had a connection. Throughout this season, we take a deeper glance at the pair as they tackle the reality of a married life.

Because of how much the past influences the present timeline, we have to understand the background story of the Saimori family. It's complicated that revolves around jealousy, human emotions, and even death. The most prominent catalyst is Miyo's mother Sumi, a kind spirited woman who serves as a foil to the antagonistic nature of the Miyo's abusers. Born from a noble family, Sumi shares similarities with Miyo in that they are both kind, compassionate, and selfless. Watching Sumi's background story just shows how human feelings can contrast so much between certain characters. The show doesn't take too much time into background storytelling but we should understand enough to know how the story unfolded into the present.

Now, we should also examine the happiness and bright side of the anime because even all this misery, there's light and hope. If Miyo represents the heart of the show, then Kiyoka represents the soul. Both characters together shows that people can overcome the past and build a better future. One of the primary reasons of their marriage is because of Miyo's potential of supernatural abilities. This is hinted before we even realize she may not be a normal girl. In other words, the reason for their rearranged marriage is to produce a powerful offspring. But unfortunately, Miyo hasn't really lived up to her family expectations. Speaking of family, we also do learn some details on the Tatsuishi family although their characters are rather underwhelming. For instance, Tatsuishi Kouji feels like a poor man's version of Kiyoka being weaker and less intimidating. Their family has a history but mostly viewed as inferior and therefore less dominant compared to the Suimoi family. Still, when we trace back all the history, family feuds, drama, this show make us realize just how human we all are.

Maintaining an aura of elegance, My Happy Marriage has a range of character designs varying from the charming looks of Miyo to the more intimidating features of Kiyoka. Most importantly is the way the studio and directors captured character expressions. Compared to shows with similar genres, it meets and perhaps exceeds the standards. It's not easy to show emotions through animation but I believe the show did an outstanding job at delivering their goal. The way character lines are delivered shows raw human emotions through the sheer quality of the animated features. It's impressive being able to capture the magic of human emotions because it is so complicated.

It may not be the masterpiece or talk of the year. However, My Happy Marriage sets an example of how human emotions are protrayed through complicated events and history. Marriage is a word that ties two people together through reasons whether it's political, financial, or love. For Miyo and Kiyokta, I believe they learned more about love more than they both realized.

The love between husband and wife is shown very beautifully and sweetly in this anime. The simplicity of married life is shown, the romance that blooms from living together is portrayed. The beauty of masculinity and femininity is shown through the story and the simple sweetness of domestic life.

Saimorie miyo's voice acting is perfect and very well suited to the character. The actress who played her did a wondaful job. In some ways this story reminded me of In this corner of the world... She is forced to marry a man... and from then on, love blossoms like the cherry tree. The ways ... he looks after her and protects her from her cruel family is very endearing and romantic... and makes the tale very heart-warming. The heroine is very sad because of her past...but as soon as she is taken under the care of her chivalrous future husband .... she becomes happy again. this anime is a beautiful romantic tale with some nostalgic hints. The animation is beautiful and I especially thought they character designe of the heroine was very good and suited her personality...
The music, the animation, the voice acting and the story all allow this romantic tale to blossom like a cherry tree...

I had no idea what to expect when I started this but I was hooked after the very first episode due to it's stellar animation but for me truly phenomenal voice acting in particular from the actress voicing Miyo.

By far my favorite thing is how this series grounded itself in reality before introducing anything supernatural, I mean I didn't even realize it was fantasy at all until the second episode. Then with each passing episode it introduced it's fantasy elements a little at a time without ever sacrificing the core of the story about a young woman healing from a life of trauma and ... falling in love both I thought were handled very well especially the former.

My only problems were that I overall found it pretty predictable and a little slow at times with a couple of weird dialogue moments here and there.

Overall though I loved it and can't wait for season 2!!!!

Screaming crying throwing up hitting my head agaisnt the wall and doing it all over again at how sweet this anime is. I had seen it being hyped up for MONTHS before it started so I was already really excited.
I am not lying when I say this show blew my expectations out of the water.
Every single character is so interesting and makes me want to know all about them. From Kiyoka and Miyo to all the supporting characters. They are all really well written and the way the two main characters change throughout is really wonderful to see. The art is stunning; especially ... all the emotion in the eyes. The use of light is also really well done. Each new episode had me screaming and blushing at watching the relationships grow. It's also a lot of fun to see the supernatural aspects come in. In the first few episodes they're mentioned but not touched on a lot, but by the end it's front and center and it's really cool. I can also definitely relate to some of Miyo's struggles, so watching her grow was almost therapeutic in a way. Like if she can, maybe I can too.
Also let's all be real the men in this show are GORGEOUS and I am in fact simping.
If you enjoy good storytelling or supernatural or romance or are just looking for something to make your cold dead heart warm a bit THIS IS THE SHOW FOR YOU! And personally I am already counting down the days until Season 2 comes out.

The concept of arrange marriages is something that I can never find compelling in storytelling, but My Happy Marriage breaks the mold for me. The main leads of this series, Miyo and Kiyoka, have a very compelling dynamic that is built upon beautifully throughout this season and all of the intense drama they face as a couple further strengthen their relationship. The only drawbacks that I have with this season are the side characters and the supernatural aspects of the story. The side characters at times can be very comical but they do serve their purpose well in the story, like how the Saimori family ... are just one-dimensionally evil. The supernatural aspect also is very shallow and at times the show just doesn't really know whether to build upon this part of the story or not. Regardless, the grounded parts of this show really cary this anime forward and I'm interested where the story goes in Season 2.

Anime with marriage as a center of focus were quite rare to say the least. So I was long waiting for this show to air from an year ago during its announcement. And when I watched the first episode, one of my immediate thoughts was "My mum would love this", because this show is melodramatic to an extreme.
Basically, our damsel in distress "Miyo" has an abusive family (to say the least) in Meiji Japan and on one rainy day, they decided to get rid of her by marrying her to the rumored bad husband material in the town. Only thing they missed, is that this ... husband-to-be "Kuduo Kiyoka" has such a pretty face that the girl goes head over sandals for him. And what follows is a nice and wholesome training session for Miyo to become the best wife material for Kudou with one of the wholesomy granny...with a spice of magic and demons in the mix?

Yeah, one of the first unexpected moment I had was when Miyo had a self loathing session for not having the "sight", which is an indicator that she can manifest magic, which also explains why the whole family hates her. I was kinda expecting a conventional marriage dramedy rooted in that period of Japan, but the fantasy setting kind of took that fun away. Because being a fantasy anime and how Miyo's entire characterization roots into the magic element, there's nothing much explored on the culture part than just a few backgrounds. The fantasy element is pretty basic as well. Different families inherit different powers like thunder, fire, healing, mind control, so and so. Much of the conflict is grounded on this basic fantasy element, so I had quite the trouble to bare with it.

Now to the characters. And oh boy! Remember when I said "melodramatic"? Yeah, these characters are really the textbook definitions of all the tropes you would see in any drama of this sort of premise. Damsel in distress and her ice prince, shitty family who deserve a good slap, goofy subordinate, gory demons, etc. I would really not recommend if these seem like a immediate red flags to you. But what sold me to this show is the execution.

The melodrama and cliche characters are married to an excellent execution. From the gorgeous animation, well-crafted shots and solid voice acting, the anime keeps your eyes peeled on your screen. Whether they are a slow and tender moments like any scene between Miyo and Kudou, or a more serious character moment like Miyo "abuse" scene or her confronting her past self in the final act, to a more action heavy scene like Kudou barging into the Saimori household; the anime knows how to craft a gripping scene and it shines throughout it's runtime. While it might seem like effort could spared for a much realistic story, nevertheless, what we are left with is a see a solid show working with basic ideas.

Conclusion
It's not usual that we get a show revolving around married couple. It's also pretty unusual for it be on a more serious tone, but "My Happy Marriage" is a beautiful tale that deserves a bouquet of flowers.

Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon (My Happy Marriage) is the Japanese Disney version of Cinderella. A girl who was made to do all the chores in the house and was maltreated by her stepmother and she ultimately found happiness by marrying her prince charming. The major difference is the supernatural elements added.

The premise of the story isn't complex nor complicated. Previously stated the show is just like Cinderella and Miyo found her prince charming in the form of Kiyoko Kudo who is my favorite character. He does come as a mean and cold person at first but he is actually a nice and cares ... so much for Mio. Their interactions started off as very one sided and slow but as the episodes went on we saw their interactions becoming more and more like they're already a married couple.

The main point of the story is seeing Mio breaking free from her tragic past and moving on to find happiness. Miyo is probably the type of character who will forgive people who hurt her so badly and I won't be surprised if she gave her step mother and her step sister so easily after all that she went through in that household but that's what her character really is. She's very obedient and is willing to forgive people who treated her badly.

One of the anime's most notable characteristics is its supernatural elements. The Supernatural Fantasy elements isn't just for show. It tells a story of how each character's ability works and how it connects to their past life and and it is the main driving source of conflict. My favorite part of the fantasy element was seeing Kudo solely destroy everyone in the Saimori household to rescue Miyo. It shows how strong and badass he is. Tbh I think he's OP and probably the strongest character in the show just saying.

The most and probably the most important characteristic of the show is the realism and the portrayal of trauma. Th constant abuse and mistreatment Miyo received in the Saimori household made her really timid to the point that she always apologizes for something that she couldn't have avoided. Speaking her mind was even challenging for her as she is scared that something will happen to her if speaks what's on her mind. Kiyoka noticed this very early in the anime and realized that she had been through a lot and thankfully he really was patient with her and didn't force her to open. He allowed her to take her time to slowly build confidence and become a new person. Patience is key when dealing with someone suffering from trauma and PTSD. Use the right methods and do not go beyond what your limit is

The animation was very bright, beautiful and colorful. The character's eyes, and facial expressions were very much on point. An the OP was amazing and a total masterpiece.

Watashi no Shiawase na Kekkon (My Happy Marriage) is a great anime that manages to effectively execute romance and combine it with supernatural elements. I didn't think I would enjoy the anime and this is the first fantasy romance anime I've watched. I guess I will be looking for more fantasy romance anime to watch and overall I found the anime to be a beautiful masterpiece.
