Overlord IV

E-Rantel, the capital city of the newly established Sorcerer Kingdom, suffers from a dire shortage of goods. Once a prosperous city known for its trade, it now faces a crisis due to its caution—or even fear—of its king, Ainz Ooal Gown. To make amends, Ainz sends Albedo to the city as a diplomatic envoy.

Meanwhile, the cardinals of the Slane Theocracy discuss how to retaliate against Ainz after his attack crippled the Re-Estize Kingdom's army, plotting for the Baharuth Empire to take over the Sorcerer Kingdom. However, when Emperor Jircniv Rune Farlord El Nix arranges a meeting with the Theocracy's messengers at a colosseum, he is confronted by none other than Ainz himself.

With their secret gathering now out in the open, the emperor and his guests learn that Ainz has challenged the Warrior King, the empire's greatest fighter, to a duel. With Ainz's motivations beyond his comprehension, Jircniv can do nothing but watch as humanity's future changes before his very eyes.

There is no need to review Overlord. All has already been said about it. Overlord is now recognised as a classic in the animation and light novel worlds. The number of animes Overlord not only inspired in every genre but became popular due to the inspiration is enormous. It has to be in the hundred thousand. This season alone, there are at least two animes inspired by it.

What is great about Overlord is that It gets better every season which is rare. It's not the only show like this but usually the majority of shows gets worse over time.

Overlord does not become stale because of ... two reasons. First, the characters. The characters make a show. You can have the most beautiful animation in the world but with trash characters, the show is still trash. Overlord has a lot of characters which means the variety of interactions keep it from getting boring. Also, the characters are independent from the main character. A thing I hate about a show is how everything revolves around the main character. Thankfully , Overlord doesn't have this problem. Each character in Overlord continues to exist without Ainz. There are a lot of characters doing things without Ainz 's knowledge. There was a world and people before Ainz came. Even his guardians which are created to be slaves show signs of disloyalty from time to time and goes against his orders. Each season, new characters appear and they are perfectly implemented in the story. Another thing is the recuring characters grow and get character development. Ainz from season 4 is completely different from season 1.

Second, The unpredictability due to the worldbuilding. Overlord is so deep that the author introduces new things constantly. PDL got introduced two seasons ago and it's right now we are getting to the meat of his character. Antilene got introduced in season 2 but it's in season 5 that she will appear again. A powersuit got introduced this season which seems out of nowhere but got foreshadowed seasons ago. Maruyama does this a lot. He introduces things in chapter 1 that he is going to reuse in chapter 1000. Overlord's world is so big that the ending will not be a true ending. It's impossible for Maruyama to finish all the plot points unless he continues to write for another decade. The ending will be an open ending because he can not end Overlord. It's too complex with too many characters and too many plot points.

Overall, Overlord is getting better and better and people have no idea where it's going.

Mixed Feelings

This season of Overlord is reflective of a large shift in tone and philosophy, and it's one I'm not fully satisfied by, as a fan of the previous three seasons. What I enjoyed about those three seasons was the comedy inherent in the premise, of an extremely self-serious fantasy world butting heads with Ainz, who is the most powerful being in the world despite not even really trying or caring, and, of course, the action sequences. Unfortunately, these are both aspects which have taken a backseat in this new season. The order of the day is politics: in showing Ainz's efforts in building his own ... kingdom, as well as the reactions of other empires to those efforts, as shown through conversations in palace rooms. There is a lot of talking, and not a lot of action; I don't think there was a single fight scene until episode 4. (Disappointingly, they've continued to rely on 3D CG much as in season 3 for these sequences.) But more importantly, it seems that Ainz, having lived in this world for years by now, has begun to see it just as seriously as everyone else, and has lost that amused detachment I enjoyed so much; he's just as self-serious as the rest of the world now. To be clear, the political intrigue is fairly well done, but it's just not what I expected or wanted from this series. Perhaps you feel differently, but for me, this was a real disappointment.

We've gotten to the point now with Overlord that the show has officially become extremely stale and the fanbase itself it starting to turn on the show.

The biggest issue with the show is, like many people have already alluded to, and you can already guarantee that I'm going to bring up, is the fact that the main cast of characters are way, way too strong for everything else that's going on around them. There's absolutely no suspense, no drama, and no point to anything that's going on in this entire show. It's crazy to see how badly the show has fallen off from what the ... show could have been in Season 1. In Season 1, we compellingly see Ainz go up against a manner of issues that he has to face and did not feel at that point that he was so powerful that the show basically didn't have a point. Sure, he was powerful and he had a lot of minions to do his bidding and do whatever he wanted, but there still felt like an adventure to be had in this world that he had found himself in. Well, three seasons later, we realize that that is absolutely not the case. He has become far too powerful and his minions are even stronger than he is, making the show absolutely ridiculous and making it have absolutely no point. There is no competition to beat him and therefore there's no compelling reason to watch because it's just him stomping everybody for a prescribed number of episodes, killing a lot of random innocent people that have nothing to do with anything that he has planned, and basically just sitting there laughing about it with his minions as he continues to do it the next episode as well.

There's a ton of interesting characters that the author has ironically written into the show, but they are all relegated to side characters who ultimately mean nothing as their life is held in the balance of Ainz. If he wants to at any time, he can kill anybody he wants, he could even just destroy the world. Due to this weird type of setup, there's not only no suspense, but you start to actually actively hate the main casting characters in this show. Everything they do is basically playing the role of the villain. Not to say that playing a villain would not be an effective story.

I think people who criticize the people who do not like Overlord or are getting tired of Overlord always bring up this fact. You can see it in YouTube comment sections and on social media. They will say something like, "oh you JUST DON'T UNDERSTAND that this is told from the perspective of the villain or perspective of the bad guy" or something like that. The thing is we absolutely DO understand that, but that does not make it any more enjoyable or any better for that reason. My favorite characters are anti-heroes. Characters like Batman, The Punisher, Daredevil, and other characters like that. I even like darker characters than that. Guys like Alucard in anime or people that have a darker streak to them. This is really just watching a guy who basically is acting out some Hitler-level fantasy in an RPG game against a bunch of people that have no idea what he's doing or can't stop him. This is not about a guy being a villain. The Joker is a villain, but he doesn't commit mass genocide. Ainz is far worse than the Joker. Ainz is far worse than any other villain that you could possibly imagine at this point. Without anybody to actually challenge him, there is zero redeeming qualities to watching the show. Ultimately, if this is how it's going to be for the rest of it, I'm really not that interested in watching anything that comes after this.
