Jujutsu Kaisen 0 Movie

Violent misfortunes frequently occur around 16-year-old Yuuta Okkotsu, a timid victim of high school bullying. Yuuta is saddled with a monstrous curse, a power that dishes out brutal revenge against his bullies. Rika Orimoto, Yuuta's curse, is a shadow from his tragic childhood and a potentially lethal threat to anyone who dares wrong him.

Yuuta's unique situation catches the attention of Satoru Gojou, a powerful sorcerer who teaches at Tokyo Prefectural Jujutsu High School. Gojou sees immense potential in Yuuta, and he hopes to help the boy channel his deadly burden into a force for good. Yet Yuuta struggles to find his place among his talented classmates: the selectively mute Toge Inumaki, weapons expert Maki Zenin, and Panda.

Yuuta clumsily utilizes Rika on missions with the other first-year students, but the grisly aftermath of Rika's tremendous displays of power draws the interest of the calculating curse user Suguru Getou. As Getou strives to claim Rika's strength and use it to eliminate all non-jujutsu users from the world, Yuuta fights alongside his friends to stop the genocidal plot.

This movie covered what was my favorite arc in the manga and it did a great job! The protagonist this time is not Yuuji Itadori, but a new character named Yuta Okkotsu. He's a great protagonist because, to me, he's more relatable than Itadori. Instead of being a happy-go-lucky MC, he's a depressed teenager with no friends. Seeing him grow is a delight.

The character of Yuta Okkotsu is similar to Junpei from season 1, so his story felt like an alternate reality for Junpei, which is something that I enjoyed.

Something else that I liked about Okkotsu is his power. In general, Jujutsu Kaisen's powers are ... interesting, but his is my favorite so far.

Now, I suppose we should talk about the visuals and soundtrack: both were great. For the music and sound, what I can say is there was a scene near the end where the music and voice acting hit the mark perfectly and it made me cry. As for the visuals, this is Mappa, so no surprise there. But even when good quality is expected from them, they still made an effort to make the movie even prettier than what we saw in season 1.

There were only two things which I didn't like about the movie:
1. The plot twist from volume 0 was spoiled ahead of time.
2. Not specific to the movie, but I feel like the series is leaning too heavily on concepts of "destined people" and "inherited powers". While it hasn't bothered me too much yet, things can become too predictable if they keep going in this direction. Jujutsu Kaisen needs to be especially careful because it has an overpowered concept like domain expansion, which can make certain fights one-sided. For example, if Maki became hypothetically evil, we know that Gojo would stop her. There's no way for him NOT to stop her because she can't deal with his domain.

Anyway, that's just a side rant which I noticed in this movie. But still, I don't want to finish this review on a negative note. I did love the movie! It was full of great moments and it's an awesome complement to the main series. With anime movies, OVA, and other extras, sometimes they end up feeling like a cash grab, but in this case I feel like the movie was well justified and worth a watch!

Mixed Feelings

I got to see Jujutsu Kaisen 0 in theaters which only amplified my experience being it's the first anime movie I've seen in theaters. As for the story, its a prequel to the show and is set up to create background information to the main villain and whatnot. The main character is given a decent origin story for more hype for when he shows up again in the show. I had lots of fun watching this thrill ride but that's all I can say. I really enjoyed it, it was hype and yeah. Nothing special.
This is the review I wrote when I saw it in ... theaters. And rewatching it, I now realize how much a theater experience raises the overall enjoyment of any piece of fiction. Looking back on it, the main villain and just about every character is uninteresting and not developed much at all. Even though we spend a mission with two supporting characters their relationships never truly reach any level over a surface level relationship. Maki gets one conversation later that does build on their relationship but that's it. The main character also is not that compelling as I remember but I did get the part right regarding it being a thrill ride and being nothing special. The way they use hype is somewhat arbitrary towards the end in regards to the main character and makes it feel more like a rushed power fantasy than anything grounded and I left my rewatch feeling nothing at all. If you like eye-candy you'll enjoy it but for any viewer who actually wants something from your experience and time, very alright but time is better spent elsewhere.

I expected something else.

I was expecting a story that focused on Gojo and Geto, that would explain what happened between The Hidden Inventory and the first season of the series. And, in part it does... but with Okkotsu as the protagonist, a character that I couldn't care less about and who is the typical protagonist that I explained that I don't like in the review of the first season. In it I basically said that what I liked about Itadori is that he was not a character like Okkotsu.

I don't think watching this movie will change anything. It introduces you to Okkotsu, who ... will appear later in the anime, and explains very briefly what happened to Geto, but nothing more. In fact, Okkotsu's growth seems very unnatural to me. I understand it, because he reaches the point where the rest of the shonen protagonists reach in several seasons, but in two hours. But I don't like it anyway.

Me esperaba una historia que se centrara en Gojo y Geto, que nos explicara qué sucedió entre El Inventario Oculto y la primera temporada de la serie. Y, en parte lo hace... pero con Okkotsu como protagonista, un personaje que no me podría importar menos y que es el típico protagonista que expliqué que no me gusta en la reseña de la primera temporada. En la misma básicamente dije que lo me gustaba de Itadori es que no era un personaje como Okkotsu.

No creo que cambie en nada ver esta película. Te presenta a Okkotsu, que aparecerá luego en el anime, y te explica de forma muy breve y floja lo que pasó con Geto, pero nada más. De hecho, el crecimiento de Okkotsu me parece muy poco natural. Se entiende, porque llega al punto donde llegan el resto de protagonista shonen en varias temporadas, pero en dos horas.
