Uma Musume: Pretty Derby Season 2

Within the horse-racing world, the horse girls of Team Spica have been gaining popularity as they continue to rack up victories. The one receiving the most attention in the group is Toukai Teiou, known for her cheerful personality and exceptional running skills. Teiou aims to become an undefeated Triple Crown horse girl by winning all three G1 races consecutively, a feat that has not been accomplished since the legendary Symboli Rudolf managed to do so many years ago.

On her path to obtaining the Triple Crown, Teiou is met with many challenges, encountering both old and new rivals. Amidst her fierce rivalries, however, Teiou is soon confronted with decisions that will leave a huge impact on her very own racing career.

This is just plain wholesome goshhh I love everything about this show. Knowing the fact that the story is based from their real life story makes me even more emotional. Tokai Teio’s story is really inspiring that she is the protagonist for this season!!!
A lot of new characters appeared compared to season 1 but it doesn’t create any confusion. I love all the small details and background characters they add in. This show never fails to bring me joy. Just cute (and cool) horse girls having fun together, training and racing, I never thought it could be so wholesome.
Their soundtrack never fails me too. Thank ... you uma musume

The second season of Umamusume: Pretty Derby builds upon the foundations of the first one. Previously introduced characters return, the girls are still cute, and Gold Ship still refuses to let go of her Rubik’s Cube. The main change this time around is the shift in protagonists. While season one focused more on Special Week and Silence Suzuka, season two puts the spotlight on Toukai Teiou and Mejiro McQueen. But does this season really deserve the almost one-point higher score it has on this site compared to season one ... (which is a huge difference)?

The short answer is yes—absolutely. But why? Besides changing the protagonists, season two also introduces more characters. At first, this worried me, as I thought it might follow the same path as season one, but thankfully that wasn’t the case. The shift in focus was crucial to the anime’s overall improvement. Teiou and McQueen’s story is simply far more interesting, better executed, and better written than Special Week and Suzuka’s. Rivalries in sports series are as common as rice and beans at lunchtime, and Umamusume is no exception. Teiou and McQueen share a strong rivalry, one that constantly pushes both of them to give their best. The anime does a great job making you grow attached to them and root for both. The story told in this season is a beautiful, emotional, and classic tale of resilience and perseverance, with several impactful moments—some of which genuinely moved me—showing how successful the narrative is at making the audience connect with the characters.

This season also came with a studio change (though not a complete one, as the previous studio, P.A. Works, was still involved), which usually raises concerns about a drop in animation quality. Fortunately, that didn’t happen here. On the contrary, the animation improved—not drastically, but noticeably. The art style remains the same, but it feels a bit more refined. The director is the same as in season one but there was improvement in that area as well and this becomes noticible in the racing scenes.

The soundtrack remains solid, just like in the previous season. There aren’t any particularly standout tracks, but the OSTs are good and effective.

In short: season two is better than season one in every aspect. I recommend giving it a chance even if you didn’t enjoy the first season that much—it’s definitely worth it.

A segunda temporada de Umamusume Pretty Derby mantém as bases da primeira, as personagens anteriormente introduzidas continuam aqui, as garotas continuam fofas e a Gold Ship continua sem largar o seu cubo mágico. A principal mudança para essa continuação é a troca de protagonistas, anteriormente acompanhamos com mais foco a Special Week e a Silence Suzuka, já aqui, quem recebe os holofotes são a Toukai Teiou e a Mejiro McQueen. Mas essa temporada realmente faz jus aos quase 1 ponto a mais de nota (e isso é uma baita diferença) aqui no site em relação à 1ª temporada?

A resposta curta para a pergunta é sim, e muito, mas por qual razão? A 2ª temp. além de mudar as protagonistas também adicionou mais personagens, isso me preocupou de início me fazendo pensar que seguiria o mesmo caminho da 1ª temp. e que bom que não foi o caso. A mudança de protagonismo foi CRUCIAL para o aumento da qualidade do anime, a história da Teiou com a McQueen é simplesmente muito mais interessante, melhor executada e bem escrita do que a da Special Week e da Suzuka. Dinâmicas de rivalidade em obras de esportes são tão comuns quanto arroz e feijão na hora do almoço e em Umamusume isso não é diferente, Teiou e McQueen têm uma boa rivalidade, onde uma faz a outra sempre querer dar o seu melhor e o anime consegue fazer você gostar bastante delas e torcer por ambas. A história contada nessa temporada é uma bela, emocionante e clássica narrativa de resiliência e superação, possuindo bons momentos impactantes, alguns deles até me causando uma certa comoção, mostrando o sucesso da trama em conseguir fazer a audiência se conectar/identificar com as personagens.

A produção para essa temporada sofreu uma mudança de estúdio (mas não completa pois o antigo estúdio responsável, P.A. Works, ainda teve envolvimento aqui) e isso sempre gera preocupação por conta de possíveis quedas na qualidade da animação, mas não foi o caso aqui, pelo contrário, a animação melhorou, não drasticamente, mas melhorou. O art style se manteve igual, mas tive a impressão de que ficou um pouco mais refinado. O diretor se manteve o mesmo da 1ª temp. mas houve uma melhoria nesse campo também que fica perceptível nas cenas de corrida.

A trilha sonora continua sólida como a da temporada anterior, nenhuma OST marcante, mas boas e eficientes.

Resumido: A 2ª temp. é bem melhor que a 1ª em todos os sentidos, recomendo dar uma chance para ela mesmo caso não tenha gostado tanto da anterior, vale a pena.

Mixed Feelings

Move aside Special Week and Silent Suzuka, cu'z it's time for Teio Tokai and Mejior McQueen to shine......on the 1st season it was more like a subtle yuri/ rivalry between Special Week and Silent Suzuka, now it was more like sets backs, bad luck and getting back on your feet theme for Teio ToKai and Mejior McQueen's being on top to tumbling down kind of thing.....

So, WTF is the fuck?

Story-Mediocre 5: However you wanna put it, it was just simply an repeat of the of that winning the ultimate prize thing. set back that happens to Teio and Mejior were just part of ... that "Oh so the drama" thing.

Art-Mediocre 5: All that zettai ryoki and not fanservices usual stuff.

Sound- Good 7: that was for Teio's song in the last episode.

Character- Mediocre 5: We already knew Teio Tokai and Mejior McQueen from the pervious season, right???? So what's there to say, when the bottom line was for her to win that G-1 Arima Kinen race to which she got in in a silver platter when something bad has happened to Mejior McQueen, that has prevented her from continuing.

Enjoyment-fair 6: Ok, I would say that this was enjoyable, but given that this was merely a repeat of the first season but with different character, one part of me finds this a chore to watch, but one part of me doesn't.

Overall-Mediocre 5: If you're not gonna find this boring then enjoy, if not then drop this........season 3???? The question is , who will it be this time?
