Synopsis

Excelling socially and academically, Asuna Yuuki is on track to ace her high school entrance exams. Her friend and classmate, Misumi "Mito" Tozawa, advises her to take a short break from studying and join her on the launch day of Sword Art Online (SAO)—the highly anticipated online virtual reality multiplayer game. Asuna accepts her offer and soon meets her in the game.

In a cruel twist of fate, Asuna, Mito, and every other player logged into SAO find themselves trapped in the game permanently. The only way out is to clear all one hundred floors of the game, and to make matters worse, dying inside the game will kill the player in real life. With SAO now turned into a nightmare death trap, Asuna and other gamers—such as the lone swordsman Kazuto "Kirito" Kirigaya—must adapt and survive, all whilst attempting to beat the unforgiving competition to the top.

Reviews

Dec 16, 2025
This film is an alternate retelling of the first two episodes of the main Sword Art Online anime. As such, this is fine as an entry point for the series. However, this review is primarily for those that are already familiar with the main series. This film is based on the light novel series Sword Art Online Progressive, which is a more in depth retelling of the series by the original author, Kawahara Reki, himself. However, it is a very loose adaptation of the first Progressive novel with the majority of content being original or heavily modified. These anime original differences do produce some pretty ...

Mixed Feelings
It’s a fine popcorn movie, but it's ultimately pointless just like every other alternate timeline in SAO. The film primarily focuses on Asuna's perspective of the events on the first floor, and it does her character justice, but.... who cares? It's the same shit repackaged, but this time slightly better.

SAO in general isn't nearly as bad as some make it out to be; it has contrivances and some uhh… “problematic” elements, but it’s nowhere near the seasonal isekai slop of which it serves as a blueprint for. Aincrad, Mother's Rosario, and Alicization are range from good to really good, though the Phantom Bullet arc is ...
Apr 6, 2025
For an ostensibly comprehensive retelling of Aincrad, Progressive largely fails at both elaborating the mechanics of its world and sufficiently imbuing personality into its cast, although the latter isn’t surprising. Mito’s addition as a friend of Asuna to provide some flimsy background to her is a debatable choice, ultimately pointless, as it doesn’t elevate her character in any sense. Their real-world interactions are way too abbreviated, precisely where the lack of foundation of their friendship originates from, consequently rendering their relationship emotionally vacuous. This absence of intimate synergy doesn’t help the film’s attempt to metamorphose Asuna after an unexpected deed Mito commits, the psychological implications of which ...
