Boku no Hero Academia: Ikinokore! Kesshi no Survival Kunren

Well that was a fun little side story to chew on. Other than the overly excessive recap of their names and quirks and all that which we knew beforehand I enjoyed it. the moment at the end with Bakugo being humbled even slightly and accepting Deku help as his "cane" made me smile. Favorite part was the new big three teaming up to reach the surface after all realizing the ice would be building up pressure. All of them figuring it out right at the same time is a nice touch. The boys knew what was up! Liked how many of the Class 1A students ... got to show off. All the big names that is. Momo, Tsu, Kamanari, Kirishima, Uraraka all had good moments. Overall a fun set of ovas showing our heroes going beyond Plus Ultra!!

TLDR? this pair of ONA are crap. don't watch them, they're a waste of time. i'm sorry the animation team had to work on these. whomever wrote these episodes needs to be fired.

story: crap. unrealistic. no credibility. not believable. nobody would ever do training like this. the entire premise is filled with DEATH. simply put, even highly trained professional structural collapse search&rescue teams and fire fighters would stop and not go into this situation without LONG planning and PROPER equipment. also, communications for emergency situations like this ARE AVAILABLE! hurricanes tornadoes etc. knock out normal cell service all the time. temporary towers, PORTABLE ... power to existing towers, local repeaters, everything can be brought in. Japan's FILLED with earthquakes YEARLY! they deal with hurricanes/typhoons yearly too! the halfway grown-up fans of this franchise will LAUGH THEIR ASSES OFF in Japan at how half-assed and shitty this story is.

art. it's normal for MHA there's nothing terrible about it, they did a good job.

character, still the same, nothing new except pushing the 'exhaustion' FAKE DRAMA too far. this is set in S3 so nobody should be 'tired' from using their Quirk this quickly. they wrote that wrong.

enjoyment, blah. as soon as i realized with the first support and floor collapse this was fake training to throw the Class into deathly danger this pair of episodes lost all credibility with me. i finished them off barely paying attention just to see the ridiculous and impossible ways they'd get out of this crap.

overall, this was a turd and a waste of my time.

Before I give my review, I want to state that I've watched all of Boku no Hero Academia series and I consider the saga to be a true anime gem.

Art:
1) the visuals are clean for the most part, with one particular exception in the early stages of the 1st episode where Ochacco and Deku were faceless. It looked too lazy and outright disturbing


Sound:
1) usually I always give extra credit to Bakugou's seiyuu (Okamoto Nobuhiko) but due to medical reasons he feels the need to tone his screaming down, although at the end of the 2nd episode he went all out. I ... feel guilty for saying this but I absolutely exploded (get it?) with joy when he was screaming his lungs out. Still, I want him safe because that man is a treasure!
2) I want to give extra credit to Denki's seiyuu (Hatanaka Tasuku) because he did amazing throughout both episodes, increasing the comedy level with his voice work. I wasn't expecting it which made it even better.
3) soundtrack was solid


Story and characters:
1) At this stage in the series with so many seasons, episodes, OVAs and movies, sometimes it feels that the author is struggling with creativity. In this two episode ONA, the characters happen to get split into the same exact teams we've been seeing about 80% of the entire saga and that means that everything that will happen will be incredible predictable and too much predictability means a sense of boredom for anyone watching.


This entry in the Boku no Hero Academia series gets an 8/10 from me because it's definetely enjoyable although I'd appreciate a little bit more novelty and creativity in terms of story, teams and quirks' usage.

The thing with Boku no Hero Academia is that the entry-level is so low, virtually anyone can enjoy an episode or two without even being an avoid Anime watcher. I feel like these special episodes are the best way possible to introduce someone to a show, they don't need a full understanding of the encompassed plotlines diverting left and right to understand whatever is happening on the screen, a two-episode show about heroes in training going about their own day, very simple and applicable.

Just like the show, these two episodes could have been naked into any season without it even feeling filler-ish, normal dialogue, all ... main characters were involved, pretty decent animation, and most of all, fan service (the good one that involves fan-favorite characters having their moments to shine).

I've been away from this series for a long time now but that did not stop me from enjoying every minute of these two episodes, despite the low stakes, it kept me on my toes, fully engaged and attentive.

Meh.

It did what it had to do I guess. I would have enjoyed it more with the full cast. Very solvable problems were drawn out to force a pretty bland plot. There were a lot of moments where characters seemed in stasis. They're beyond the problems that occurred in this episode. It made me think of Gentle. There shouldn't have been this many issues, especially with all the supposed heavy hitters on the team. It made me more frustrated than entertained at times and often took me out of the moment because I kept going, "why didn't they do this," and "why didn't they just ... use their quirk to fix that," and "it really took this many of them to solve a rather simple problem???"

So.

On a good note, a lot of character interactions were cute. Really love these kids lol.

The first thing I want to iterate is that I do fully understand how popular My Hero Academia is to young anime fans and my first exposure to this series is not starting from episode one of the mainline series but to start with a side story that offers a great introduction to the world and characters of my hero acamedia without giving you a feeling of being lost with regards to how big and massive the series is.

This story is a special two-part episode and 4th OVA for the My Hero Academia series. The plot of the episode is that it takes place ... before the provisional hero license exam and it looks at the the team being put through survival training in order to perfect their abilities as hero's. Their survival training focuses on rescuing a practice dummy that was left in the remains of the 6 floor shopping center that was evacuated due to a fire.

Don't expect anything too detailed in this review because it is a two episode OVA, but one thing I do appreciate about this OVA is that it covers enough information to get you interested in the world of my hero academia. The start of this two part OVA gives me a great introduction into the world of my hero academia and the main character Izuku. I feel with this OVA we get to see enough of the characters personality and each character has an opportunity to showcase their power/ability. Even in this two episode OVA, it gave me enough information to know who which characters I liked and which characters I disliked. There really aren't any villains in this episode since it is a practice rescue mission. However, the danger is incredibly real because due to the fire in the shopping mall the building is on the verge of collapsing and to make matters worse the bottom levels of the shopping mall start to flood as several areas of the shopping mall to collapse which adds a continued level of danger to this survival training.

During this survival training exercise, the heroes need to learn to operate as a team even though many of them split up in order to cover more ground with regards to finding the training dummy. Unfortunately there is one stubborn character that feels like he doesn't need the rest of the team in order to complete the task. However, the more times the characters use their powers it actually contributes to the buildings continued deterioration. It also doesn't help the fact that many of the characters can't use their powers because it puts them in a more precarious position.

During the time we get to see the characters use their powers. It is animated quite beautifully. I don't have tany issues with the animation quality and the soundtrack throughout this 2 part ova. There is not much in the realm of humor and some of the personalities for some of the characters can be a little irritating. Since it's only a two episode OVA it's not really that much of a detriment. There are definitely far more positive/uplifting characters then annoying characters and tt actually gets me excited to start watching the full series when I find the free time to start it.

By the end of the 2 part OVA, the team managed to succeed with their survival training but not without a few injuries and a few bruised ego's. It's still a nice little appetizer regardless if it's your first adventure in the world of my hero academia or you want a nice little break from the main series. I certainly got my enjoyment out of it.

This is a fun little side story featuring half of the kids of class 1A. It's nothing amazing, but considering the time that this was released and when I watched it, it was great and brought me enjoyment. Though-- I already knew I was going to like this because I really love My Hero Academia. Getting to see my favorite characters again is always fun.

The plot of this is quite bland, but these two episodes are just filler content, and we're following a rescue training class, so there's not gonna be much excitement or plot twists happening. It was quite predictable plot, but it's ... not like they're gonna pull a fast one on us, cause again, this is just filler.

There are few issues that I have, but they're mainly just personal preference things like; why is this filler content too placed before the provisional license exam? It's been a long time since season three happened, and I'm sure many would've liked to see filler content of the kids' lives in the dorms instead of another rescue training class. Plus, there's been a lot of character development for certain characters between the aftermath of the summer training camp and where season four ended, so to see the "old" versions of characters was weird. I also would've liked to know how the other half of the class did on the training. There are few other questionable things about this ONA but I consider those things as spoiler so I won't discuss them here.

All in all, fun and short glance of the kids of class 1A, but it was weird that this was set so far back in the timeline.

The OVA was pretty cool. like any other average OVA, the students in UA are doing a good job in the story. some what their characters are developing their actions & attack moves while solving the situation on saving the dummy. though lida tried saving momo, it's a bit of a shame that he didn't think faster enough to save her earlier ago before ceilings started to fall off. as for bakugou, he should probably take it easy and let deku & todoroki help out which even though he did, he's always a dick through out the whole series which kinda bothers me from his ... attitude. but hey it's just a character, who's gonna say anything right? by concluding this review, this might be a good start before swtiching over to season 5 which I'm very curious to see what season 5 is all about. that's my review for this OVA.

Yes, I am someone who is easy to please when it comes to anime, and watching this ONA after season 4, while felt a little odd due to the timeline, it was still a blast.

What I like the most about this series is how it manages to be so intense and action-packed even without villains or their backstories. This formula is repeated even here, and the result thus is also impressive as expected. Think of it as just a made-for-television action flick with enough superhero action, peril and challenges that can make anyone's day, and there you have it.

The pacing was good, the ... animation looked finely done and the voice acting was impressive as usual. The mission it showcases is actually plausible and has a suspenseful feel to it given the backdrop. Might remind you of some Hollywood disaster flicks and the premise might not seem very original, but that's where this ONA's success lies: to turn used ideas into something that befits the show's universe in its own unique style.

Plus, we also get some much-needed character moments (a lot of you probably know what I'm getting at) and the action feels different because it's more about fighting the forces of nature than rivals. So expect intensity, fun and loads of fun. If you love the show, you're gonna love this one. It's just as simple as that.

I went to see the movie as a MHA fan and I enjoyed it,
Among the positive points, a nice animation or even a visual slap at times, the fights are intense and worked, the general atmosphere is excellent, you never get bored, you alternate between laughter, carelessness and fear, pain...

In the small negative points, I would say the rhythm a little too strong and the story not very original, especially the villain.

So I am overall very satisfied with the film and recommend it without any worries to have a good time without it being the anime of the century ... that revolutionizes things.
