Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Movie: Orion no Ya

tl;dr: A filler film that comes with the standard positive of seeing everyone with great production values and the standard negative of no progression on anything of substance.

Arrow of the Orion is a filler film that serves as a sequel to the first season of DanMachi, though it also seems to pull in some minor elements from Sword Oratoria. Overall, it’s pretty much exactly what you’d expect from a filler film. It has noticeably better production values which results in better art and animation quality, especially during the action sequences. The plot is also designed such that it shows off all of the cast with ... the superior art/animation quality including side characters, including with what I’m assuming are a few cameos by characters that haven’t been introduced yet. The main cast all get new outfits that look pretty nice, though I’d assume are temporary. The soundtrack is also really high quality, and though the ED is just the standard filmic white text scrolling on black the song is pretty nice.

As for the plot itself, as it’s a filler film it has to be the type where nothing from it can be long lasting, and thus it focuses on a new character, Artemis, who exists solely in this film, and takes place far from the city that serves as the setting of the main series. It has to introduce her, get the viewer attached to her, and use her to the fullest extent possible within only an hour and twenty two minutes so it sticks to a pretty typical plot line that’s easy to resonate with in order to do so, and overall I’d say it did succeed. I find the specifics on how the ending was handled pretty strange though, in that I feel like such an event occurring should have a major effect on Bell’s character arc, but as this is a filler film it can’t do that so it just kind of glosses over things, which felt thematically inconsistent within the film itself and the series overall. The film also explains some new lore aspects regarding the Gods and monsters, though I’m not sure how canon they are and if they’ll apply to the main series.

It was ok.

This is a non-canon work set between season 1 and 2. It was fun to watch, but nothing substantial nor additive to the series. What most would consider "fanservice". If you're a fan of the series and want a lil more, this is it, but as something concrete to the series, it didn't add nor take away anything from it. Overall enjoyable, but rather forgettable. Would not recommend if you're not a big fan as it would just feel like a whole load of nothing sandwich.

I would put this on the same levels as the Hot Spring OVA and the Beach ... OVA, although those are much funnier. Namako desu, kimoi desu.

Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Movie: Orion no Ya is an average movie that contributes little to the overall series. The narrative is somewhat lacking, although it manages to serve its purpose. The action sequences are well-animated, and it's pleasant to see familiar characters from the series. However, in the grand scheme of things, there isn't much to be gained from watching the movie, and only fans of the series are likely to find enjoyment in it. Dungeon ni Deai wo Motomeru no wa Machigatteiru Darou ka Movie: Orion no Ya simply feels unnecessary when there are numerous other compelling ... options to explore.
