This movie was fucking awful. I tried really hard to think of a witty opening of some kind, rather than simply stating that the film is shit, but I couldn't. This movie was so bad that, as a result, I am now permanently dead inside forever.
Last season, we were given the first anime adaptation of the the once popular Ao Oni game, which was essentially a sub-par comedy that was fine for what it was. Some jokes were kind of funny, but overall it felt really weak and lacking in substance. However, that show looks like a fucking masterpiece when compared to this CG piece
of shit. It seems that the studio wanted to create a more serious, horror-esque film this time around with Ao Oni but the outcome is more pathetic and laughable if anything else, resulting in a film with no likeable characters, a boring mystery and an awful aesthetic. The film is clearly trying to go for horror but the presentation is so bad, it completely destroys all of the tension and horror the film tries to buld upon. Everything is made out of really bad CGI, resulting in all of the characters looking like plastic, and when they're in motion, it's even more laughably bad since they move with the same amount of posture as a man with no legs. Yandere Simulator, which is being produced by one guy and is still in its production phase, looks ten times better than this miserable piece of dog piss. The character designs are abysmal, lacking in variety and originality and we haven't even gotten to the worst part yet! The monster is fucking terrible! My God, it looks so fucking bad! The Ao Oni monster has got to be some of the worst cases of CGI I have ever seen making this so called 'horror' even more comedic than it was once before. He has got this insanely large head and strange smile, which, sure is creepy, but when he is moving it's literally the funniest shit ever.
The characters and story are both as equally generic and boring as one another. Half of the film consists of people talking about crap, and the entire mystery surrounding the death of the Ao Oni creator (yes, this narrative uses meta fictional writing) was entirely dull and weak. There is not enough time for setting up the characters nor developing them in the slightest! Not a single one of them has a personality and when they do die, I ended up fucking laughing instead since there is no build up. Moreover, the character deaths themselves are not even all too interesting so I can't even enjoy this as a guilty pleasure gore-fest. The film has the audacity to actually try and force in a plot twist right at the very end in a pathetic attempt to be edgy and dramatic but I didn't care since I was so fucking bored and disengaged throughout the entirety of this train wreck. Hell I can't even remember the names of the characters and I just finished watching it!
The music is completely obnoxious, with strange dub-step beats at the most annoying of places, acting as the cherry on this shit cake. I have no fucking clue what the team behind this film was trying to achieve. It's clear they're going for horror but the animation is so stiff and bad, it fails. The mystery element is atrocious since I was able to guess everything for myself and the script is so bad. This anime fails on every level. Avoid it like the plague.
Many fans would love to see a good horror-movie based on the game 'Ao Oni' but instead they get this...
Sadly, it has very little to do with the game. It has the monster, the chase music, and they talk about 'Ao Oni' being a video-game. That's basically all it has in common with the source material. The plot isn't terrible but the execution is very poor. The pacing is slow and awkward. Every scene feels like it should be faster to some degree. The characters aren't likeable or interesting. They had plenty of time to make them likeable before the threat comes into play but
nope. You probably won't even remember their names right after watching it.
It's 3D animated and looks very amateurish. It looks very cheap. It's very choppy making it unpleasant to look at. Most of the time it has an average of about seven frames per second. In most 3D animation software, tweening is very easy and automatic. They must have decided to render it out with a lower frame-rate to make it appear more like traditional 2D animation. The animation itself is awkward and looks very unnatural. The characters move like robots. With this kind of animation and choppiness, you would fail a 3D animation course.
The music isn't good except for the music during the end-credits which is actually alright. Overall, it's awkward, cheap-looking, and boring. I don't recommend anyone to waste their time with this. If you're an 'Ao Oni' fan and you're really curious, then maybe watch it.
If you thought the Ao Oni comedy shorts were bad, wait until you see this - it's even worse. The comedy shorts are a masterpiece compared to this tripe.
Story: This is apparently a story based off the game; too bad there is no story. The majority of the hour long movie is the characters sitting around talking and nothing happening. It takes place in a school, not in the usual mansion. There is a story there somewhere, but it's lost in the boring, awkward telling.
Animation: Studio Deen, who brought us such animation fail classics like Axis Powers Hetalia and Higurashi, are the animators of this.
I was hardly surprised when I found out they were responsible. Needless to say, Studio Deen have kept up their trope of animating badly, leaving the series looking like a slightly updated version of MMD. The expressions of the character are poor and almost ridiculous even by anime standards and the characters move slow and stiff like machinery. And the animation of the monster is just terrible. It's also in 3D, not that watching it in 3D makes it any better or easier to get through.
Sound: The voice acting is pretty decent but not great. The music is irritating and drove me to despair. I had to pause every few minutes just to take a break. Honestly I wonder whether the voice actors will have careers after this.
Characters: The characters in this movie aren't Hiroshi & co, but a bunch of new characters. There's zero character development, the characters are one-dimensional, boring and have the personality of a gnat. There's no way you can form connections with the characters or even like them. I don't even remember their names.
Enjoyment: I hate every single second. I get more enjoyment from watching paint dry. There's no horror, no nothing.
Overall: 0/10. This is the worst thing I've ever seen and if I could give myself amnesia so I could forget this, I would. Avoid this and the comedy shorts, watch something better.
