Sword Gai The Animation

When the gods would not answer in humanity's desperate hour of need, it turned to a demon instead. The supposed savior came wielding the sword Zsoltgewinn, but its uncontrollable lust for blood led it to kill those who summoned it too. Although the sword was sealed away long ago, it has been uncovered by the Shoshidai, an organization that collects such cursed artifacts. However, Zsoltgewinn proves to be too strong to be tamed by humans when its corruptive power influences the administrator, Takuma Miura, to flee with it in his grasp.

At the same time, Gai Ogata's family is torn apart due to the possession of another demonic sword, Shiryu, leading his father to be murdered and his mother to hang herself shortly after giving birth to him. Abandoned in the forest clutching the blade, he is discovered by the blacksmith Amon. Unnaturally transfixed by the sword, Gai works tirelessly for years to hone his smithing skills. However, when an accident costs him his arm, he gains a new one—in the form of a reforged Shiryu.

Now having a cursed sword for an arm, Gai must learn to control its violent urges. All the while, Zsoltgewinn continues its rampage, leaving a path of blood in its wake.

Finally a good anime after countless bullshit as the author takes a realistic approach for it instead of the magic power of friendship. For those who didn't get it, this whole anime and the second season is an allegory of PTSD.

Plot: 7

I haven't read the adapted work so i don't how it is, but the anime made a sacrifice to let the viewer understand the world better. It did a great job given it had to deliver so much lore on only 12 episodes. Thus the pacing is fast and the occasion to meet and follow the MC is rare. You have to get a ... glimpse of him by taking on what other people say of him even if, in the present, he isn't like that. There isn't enough time to show it in the anime or else, the world building would suffer.

The surface story is simple to get: it is about damned swords that take possession of humans to render them demons. The world is built in such a nice way as it tries to convey a realistic depecting, exaggerating a bit on some aspects, of it, instead of a fairy tale type one.

The surface isn't always as it looks, how changes affects other and so on, are themes that can be found within this anime.

Characters: 8

The MC isn't your generic anime weak MC. He is a solid character that has his current persona formed from deep rooted trauma. He is similar to Batman in a sense because his character is all about PTSD and how to overcome it, if it is even possible to do so and how it affects everyone around you.
So many people care about him, yet the MC can't overcome his past. And, this is annoying sometimes, but that is what makes him interesting. After watching many animes where the MC changes heart in an instant because of a new experience, it is nice to see an author that isn't afraid to potray how it would go. Just because someone is there, if the trauma is only repressed, nothing changes for the character. I was tricked so many time; i thought ' this is it, this is when the MC gonna change', boy i was wrong. I blame other shitty animes for this.

Other characters:
- Girl: average bland personality child hood friend
- Blacksmith: good personality, severe but just
- Others sometime fall into the bland category, sometime they are pretty unique.

Sword Gai The Animation (2018)

Well, here we have a show that for the first time has left me wondering if I can do the second season. The show has some positives but the main character just ruins the entire experience.

Story: Cursed weapons + humans with dark and/or sad emotions = possession. How quickly that possession takes over the person varies.

Art: The art when it is normal like the people, vehicles, surroundings are very good. What is not good and brings it down completely is the Busoma being the people who have given into darkness are absolutely awful. They are seriously out of ... place and clunky. They just do not fit right at all.

Sound: Is fair but nothing too special. Soundtracks are good enough.

Characters: Most of them are dull, boring and just give you no desire to know them.

Some of the supporting ones like the girlfriend of Seiya Ichijou are just puzzling. You get thrown in at the deep end with a woman that has lost it that provides no real basis for why they included her for any of it since she has no depth.

Midoriko the idol girl is at least a cute girl with a sadistic side that you can get on with. She is actually a fairly likeable character compared to the others.

Sayaka again is likeable. She is pretty closed off with her clear feelings for Gai from the world but she is at least satisfying to see do things.

The issue in the show and one that ruined the entire experience for me if I am honest is Gai Ogata. He is boring, dull, uneventful, a hollow representation of the main character. He is also unnecessarily selfish. Yes, I do appreciate he had a hard time around when he was born. BUT he grew up in a loving home with a girl like Sayaka who loved him dearly. But what do we get??? a guy who acts like he is alone, that has always been alone and doesn't have anywhere he belongs. It is so far from the truth in the attempt to make him a dark protagonist who may redeem the light in his heart at a later date type character that it is done so badly that it just ruined the show. If Gai wasn't in it or he was constructed differently it could have more of a redeeming storyline.

The show was overall in enjoyment pretty mediocre. It was ok in the fight scenes. The slice of life side was actually better overall, which is bad because it is not a slice of life anime.

In the end, I shall persevere and watch season 2. More because I want to see what happens with Sayaka and Midoriko. Also, Himiko seems to be interesting too. I leave this one as a wide-open choice to whether you want to watch it, I struggle myself to believe I got through it but I always finish things I start so.

First things first, don't watch it, don't even bother it if you are looking for anything more than guilty pleasure. This anime is horribly bad, full of plot holes, irrational decisions and the most generic and unlikeable characters in human history. The art style is at best: average, a mix of 2D + 3D is horrible.

It's hard to find anything positive about this show but I'm going to try my best, fight scenes are okayish, the sound is ok, it is on Netflix (on the day of writing this review) and the most important thing, 1st season is WAY better than 2nd one. I ... rate it 5 outta 10, because in comparison to 2nd season, it's good.
