Kyou kara Maou!

My initial reason for starting Kyou Kara Maou! was the shounen-ai premise (boy is transported—or rather, flushed down a toilet—to another world where the laws are extremely different and ends up accidentally proposing to one of the Maou's sons; sounds like fun to me!) and I became a little disappointed when I realized it wasn't a strictly shounen-ai anime, or even one that focused largely on romance, but after only a handful of episodes I was addicted to the humour and characters and there was absolutely no return.

Kyou Kara Maou! is a truly hilarious anime, and it's filled with so many great characters that it's ... impossible not to have a few favourites. The characters and the interaction between them all was what made the anime so good in my opinion, and even though I must admit that the show has its share of filler episodes, I just adored the characters too much to really mind.

Despite the humour, however, Kyou Kara Maou! does have a serious story (once it kicks in) and some very intense episodes with a few plot twists and character back story that isn't so cheerful, especially coupled with Yuri's struggle to bring peace to this new world he's been crowned king of without resorting to war or fighting of any kind.

Yes, Kyou Kara Maou! is lengthy and probably a little cliché, but if you fall in love with the characters the way I did then you'll wish it had've gone on longer. I was sad to see it end, and it's absolutely become one of my favourite animes. If you like lighthearted anime with darker undertones that's full of great characters and don't mind the touches of shounen-ai (or crossdressing boys, for that matter), then I wholeheartedly recommend this series to you!

This is the anime that I cried the most in!
I love the action, the adventure, the comedy, everything about this anime is hilarious! It's great for the younger children even though I'm 17 and I felt like a little kid watching scooby doo in the mornings. This absolutely my most favorite anime in the adorable genre!
I loved how it explained everything, there weren't a lot of cliff-hangers, it was a magical kind of anime

If you want to marathon a long anime and you don't like shounen-ai style anime, DO NOT START HERE! Hehe. If anyone knows me at all, you know darn well how much I dislike shounen-ai, and this show has it in spades. There is even a "reverse harem" for the main character. But its not hard core boy love like most come to associate with an anime labeled with "shounen-ai" its very mild and as such, isn't really that bad to watch for anyone who enjoys a decent adventure/shounen anime. The story evolves around a teenage boy named Yuri Shibuya. He's a normal teenage boy ... who loves baseball and enjoys normal things fifteen year olds like. But the story starts to progress when a bunch of bullies give him a swirlie (dunking his head in the toilet). In the toilet water, a portal opens up to an alternate reality where humans and 'demons' coexist. When he got flushed down the toilet I couldnt help but think of Inuyasha and how there was two coexisting dimensions in that show as well. To make a long story short, yuri happens to be a long awaited reincarnated king that is supposed to assume the throne of the 'demons.' Of course hilarity action and adventure ensues.

The story is standard fare, with Yuri progressing and learning new things and helping others. All that is good and everything but it takes about 30-40 episodes till the real story line unfolds. Very similar to Inuyasha, Yuri must prevent the opposing powers from collecting certain peices that will bring the end of the world. It's a very generic plot but the stories intertwined with the main story are wat make it fairly interesting. The "boy-love" comedy bits troubled me a bit at first but further down it became more and more funny rather than annoying and there were parts thats I actually laughed out loud. Another great part of this show is how it makes fun of itself. Knowing that they are doing an anime thats been done numerous times before, they made different rules and regulations in this alternate universe. Episode 1 will introduce you to some the hilarious laws. Theres even countless puns and gay jokes galore. For what they're worth they're all pretty funny.

It also helps that main characters all sound so macho and rough most of the time but also have a flipside/softside to all of them. Their macho side shows about 80% of the time, but their softside is just pure comedy gold in my opinon (personal favorite is Gwendal). But its not all males all the time (thank god), theres also a handful of woman characters in it as well. The girls all appeal to the male audience though with all of them having rather large breasts and beautiful faces. And a lot of the girls have their own silliness that makes this show such a treat.

The art and animation of the show isn't very impressive at all which is a little surprising considering that it was made in 2004 and having 78 episodes. But i guess its safe to say that the art and animation is about average for for that time frame. Background and static art are all detailed enough but has a nice amount of "haze" to keep the quality from going any higher than low. The characters are drawn pretty good, all main characters having that 'pretty boy' look and the girls looking too perfect. If there was a comparison to the character art i think it would be close to Ouran Host Club.

The sound and music are also mediocre as well, typical sound effects but nothing over the top. They're are pretty generic and im sure you can spot a few sound effects from other anime. The music is also very average/below average. Nothing very memorable about the music. And im not too fond of J-punk as the opening song (and its on ALL episodes) The ending songs do switch up at least and I did find Arigatou~ by BON'z (eps 40-on) to be pretty catchy and nice.

Overall this is, at best, an average shounen/comedy with nothing really memoriable or worth putting on my "favortie anime" list. Its also best if viewed in short sets instead of a 3 day marathon. If you don't mind your comedy having naked boy's, boy love, cross dressing, gay love triangles, and other homosexual tendancies worth laughing at (think Darma and Greg), watch this show. But if you dont want to waste your time watching an average show with a dash of shounen-ai then dont watch this. By the way, if you take out the fillers this show can easily be 15-20 episodes (yes thats how many fillers it feels like that are in there)

For a shounen anime, the main part is the path to the end not the plot. Unfortunately path they set isnt as memoriable.

I have to say - it took me almost three months to watch the whole thing. I had the first season on DVD, and I had to watch most of the second season on youtube since I only acquired a fansub recently. It was worth the wait. What will I do now? No more Kyo Kara Maoh! for me?

Let's start with the story. I think the first episode usually defines how a series will go. I was laughing my pants off the first episode alone, and it was like that for most of the series. I really liked the concept - it did remind me ... of Fushigi Yuugi a bit, another seemingly normal teenager shipped off into a new world, rather flushed into a new world. That was only an initial reaction though. I forgot about comparing it to Fushigi Yuugi after a few episodes. I also have to note that this anime is easy to understand. I really think that an anime should be easy to understand and still be able to entertain everyone.

The only problem I have with the series is it's "fillers-galore". It made the series longer than it needed to be, and I have to say that the creators did poorly with the time management and pacing. At first the fillers were amusing, but it got to the point where there were too many of them.

I was a bit worried concerning the premise of yaoi. It's not yaoi after all, but it came really close to shonen - ai (but then again, is it really shonen - ai?). I found me and my brother screaming at the sight of Wolfram wearing his pink night gown, sleeping in Yuri's bed. I had the same reaction when Wolfram offered to scrub Yuri's back in one episode. While those scenes were a bit uncomfortable, they are just foot notes after all, and are usually for comedic relief. Although for some reason, I would like to see Gisela end up with Wolfram. I don't know why exactly. There was also the problem with Yozak cross dressing. He is such a good looking and muscular guy. Why be like Dennis Rodman, Yozak?

No doubt about it, I like the drawing style. Most of what I like are the well drawn bishies, of course.I love the bishonens. My favorites are Wolfram and Konrad, but towards the end I was like "Ken's handsome too". Gwendal's not that bad either, although the wrinkles bothered me a bit. everything else is also considerably well drawn. The backgrounds are nice, and I like the color palette. I didn't find colors that clash together, etc. I would like to take note that the women in this anime are also nice drawn. My favorite is Anissina. She's the one who looks the most consistent (Is Cheri really that old?), and Greta's also adorable.

At first I didn't really like the music. It wasn't the kind of music I would listen to, so my initial reaction was a miss. However, after hearing it constantly and repetitively, I learned to like it. I am proud to say I have memorized all the lyrics to the opening and ending themes.

The background music was also considerably well. I realized the music complemented the scenes very well, and they were discreet enough to put focus on the scenes and not overshadow them.

Voice acting was so - so. I realized that the seiyus had a hard time pronouncing their characters' names - Wolfram became Wolfram-u, Konrad became Konrad-o, and so on. Similar problems occured when the characters spoke in english as well. The seiyus are Japanese after all, so A for effort.

All in all, I think that this anime is really good. I can't say it's the best I've seen, but it's almost there. The only problem I had with it was the pacing - as I've mentioned the anime didn't need to be that long. It had way too many fillers, and that keeps me from saying it's good enough for everyone to watch and to like.

First of all "Kyou Kara Maou!" or "God Save our King!" is a very orginal and interesting anime.

There exists two worlds the Demon World and the Normal World. On the Normal world, magic doesnt seem to exist Demons hide themselves amongst the normal population, and live as normal humans.

One such Demon is Yuri Shibuya, a normal boy who loves baseball and has a kind heart. Through strange occurance he is dropped into the Demon world, where he becomes the new Demon king. Because 'Double Blacks' or people with Black Hair and Eyes are considered royalty are are exteremly rare in the Demon world.

In the ... Demon world, there are many problems and situations that Yuri must overcome, and with his country on the brink of war its no easy task for this war hating boy.

The Cast of Characters is amazing and the story is very capturing. Not to mention in the demon world, gay and hetro relationships are considered normal and both equally as common. It was very moving for me to see an Anime that was willing to take the "gay" relationships in a good light.

The music and Animation are on par with most animes, and I am seriously enjoying this anime I think you will too!

Great. Excellent. Fresh.

I could think of another million good words to describe this anime. I mean, the plot is fresh and goes smoothly, the art is excellent, the seiyuus are just right for the characters, there's a balance of seriousness and comedy, and there's shonen-ai. What more can you ask for?

If you're looking for something enjoyable and funny and light, you must certainly pick this one.

Although the story is ridiculously long (OMG I haven't finished yet), it's quite worth it in the end. Even the character developments are good; it's quite rare to find an anime where the characters actually change for the better (or ... for worse) overtime. Taking Wolfram as an example, he was grumpy and too suspicious of Yuuri at first (and of course he's still all "cheater" on Yuuri but myeh ^.~) but as the series progresses he learns to be more accepting of his surroundings (especially of humans) and learns to show more care for other people other than himself, Yuuri, or Gwendal.

And it covers everything: Love, betrayal, family, etc. And the plot is extremely fresh: Name other anime who has a kid flushed down a toilet and suddenly finds himself in another world. Sure, the idea of "another world" has been used numerous times, but the fact this isn't all "Owh I opened the wrong door and next thing I know I'm in another world" or "Owh I was walking and then a mysterious thingamabob appeared out of nowhere and dragged me to another world" makes it entirely different from other anime of the same kind. Besides, it covers all aspects of fan service: sexy ladies, shounen-ai, bishounen mania. And not to mention reverse Harem. But by reverse harem I MEAN REVERSE harem. If you know what I mean ^.~

Even the art is excellent. Sure there are times when Wolfram's eyes are a little too big for his head or Gunter's hair is too poofy, but aside from that, the art is relatively great.

And seriously, this anime is the epitome of all freshness. I mean, weird customs, humans vs. demons (different version, not the "hyaaa demons be gone!" type of thing), kid flushed down a toilet, housekis, and what-nots, tons of revolutionary materials and plots and thingamabobs all rolled into one. How can you not like Kyou Kara Maou?

Overall, this anime is a MUST watch for everyone, even guys. Sure, it features gay-engagement, but the other aspects, such as battle scenes, humor, etc. make it worthwhile to be watched even by straight boys. Besides, the balance of seriousness and humor and light-hearted scenes and heart-wrenching scenes keep you on the edge of your seat. Some episodes are considerably slow taking and the sort of "dammit just end already so I can watch the next one", but this is balanced with the too fast-moving scenes. All aspects of life (and other worlds) are covered in this anime, and certainly not something you'd want to miss.

After months of passing over KKM in favor of other animes, I'm finally glad to be able to watch it or else I would have missed such an amazing anime. The summary at the back of the dvd doesn't really capture how interesting KKM is, it actually makes one think that this is just one of the animes with the same story.

Now if you get passed that notion and actually watch it, the first episode alone would piqued your curiosity. And the lines! The characters and the story itself are backed by amusing, witty, and clever lines. As Yuuri gets sucked into the demon world, ... you travelled along with him, also taking in with wonder/amazement at this strange world that might have been mistaken for old england, as well as laugh at the unusual customs like slapping one's cheek as a form of proposal, picking up objects as a request for a duel, or even just the plain difference of how one should sound when rowing a boat or taking a deep breath! Its truly an interesting magical world where dragons and magic still exists.

The Characters are very well made, it makes one sympathizes, love, laugh, or be annoyed at them at one point or another. The seiyuus did a good job, I especially like Conrad's seiyuu! and it was surprising to find edogawa conan's seiyuu in these anime. Eventhough it was stretched into 78 eps, you won't feel tired of watching each episodes as it offers different situations that gives off the humor, suspense, shounen-ai, adventure, and mystery!

When the first episode involves our hero being sucked down a toilet into a magical world, it certainly sets up a tone. Lighthearted is the key-word for this series, as it aims to deliver a mix of comedy and fantasy-adventure, as well as a lovable cast of bishounens. Lighthearted is also the key-word for what makes the show good, but not great, more on that as I go along.

The production-values are a mixed bag. The quality of the animation may vary from episode to episode as is often the case with longer running shows. At times the motion is fluid, while other times it cuts ... a few corners. Even with good animation though, it would not be saved from some lackluster directing, as the cinematography and design keeps everything very basic, never taking artistic risks to be more expressive.

The soundtrack fits its medieval setting with its subtle use of flutes and violins, conveying a cheerful mood while not overshadowing the scenes that play out. The one problem I would have with the soundtrack would be how it doesn’t work well with the comedy, as it’s often too quiet and slow-paced to keep up with situations that should be far more flippant and energetic. By itself though, it is a soundtrack I could imagine sitting back and relaxing to on a sunny day.

The story of Kyo Kara Maou will attract an audience by being humorous and easily digestible. One vital thing that keeps KKM lighthearted is its semi-episodic format, which cuts out a lot of dense plot and cliffhangers, making sure each new episode has something new to offer. The down-side to this would be that the viewer can't get attached to any given plot-thread for too long. While this perhaps is a wasted opportunity for a stronger story, it still works in creating its carefree atmosphere.

As a comedy it starts off strong with potential for more. The main character, Yuuri Shibuya, is thrown into an environment where he experiences a myriad of culture-shocks and strange customs, including an accidental proposal between him and another boy. Some shameless short-cuts are also made to progress the story in earlier episodes, teleporting characters from location to location without any explanation. Over time the show has less and less of these crazier moments, which is a shame as it could have done a lot more with its quirks.

When telling a fantasy-story Kyo Kara Maou puts in all the effort. The usual tropes are all here, from dragons and swordplay, to bickering noble families and an ancient evil that only shows up once every millennium. The show even borrows some classic shounen tropes such as Yuuri having a darker demonic side that steps in whenever diplomacy doesn't work. Despite having all these ingredients in place, its lightheartedness tends to keep it from going all out with these potential conflicts. What I mean by going all out is that the conflicts are delivered in a limp-wristed way, not forcing the characters to develop in order to solve the problem. For example , Yuuri's demonic side does not cause any irreversible harm, the fact that he even has this side is never questioned by him. The stakes are high yet the consequences are few.

On a better note, the characters do get fleshed out to a good degree. This often involves Yuuri digging up old secrets of his closest comrades which they then must confront, which by far lead to the most enjoyable parts of the show. While I did state that the characters don't develop much, these moments did twist things around during some arcs, though I can’t say I felt too differently whenever an arc ended. Yuuri’s marriage to another boy, the relationship between the noble-families, the dilemma of forgetting their war-torn history, these are all things I wished to see more of. Again, the lightheartedness and the episodic format keep the characters grounded to the status quo.

To summarize, Kyo Kara Maou is a fun lighthearted adventure with mediocre story and art, but good characters and music. It had the potential to be more, yet was held back by its own safe and relaxed attitude, and an unwillingness to take risks with its story. It succeeds in being what it sought out to be, with all the right ingredients if one is willing to look beyond some cut corners here and there. Recommended to people who want a casual adventure with likable characters with a bit of silliness added to the mix.

KKM is a show about relationships and heroics. It is about a boy that wanted a simple life as a teen playing baseball but was forced into being responsible for his nation by his heritage. Some of the running gags are related unrequited love. Forced proposal and of course forced gay characters chasing the main character.

Let me explain. Wolfram and Gunter are gay and both want to be with Yurri. In this world these relationships are fully acceptable. Wolfram repesents the white knight creeper that has no reason to be over protective to Yurri. He stays around the main character even though his advances ... are shot down everytime. He wants to be with the most exotic important guy in his world and that happens to be yurri. This is the most annoying part of the show for me.

Otherwise, the story is pretty good. Yurri learns a lot about himself and teaches a world to be more tolerant of all beings regardless of their heritage, class or past "sins".

Visually, Sword Fight scenes aren't that good. A couple clashes and slashes? That is what the best swordsman, Conradt can do?

The best part of the fight sequences was when Yurri would randomly realize his power and start dishing out "Justice".

Watch this show if you are into the following:

-Unrequited love
- A lot of "Attractive looking people" Specifically guys as main characters
- Displays of magic powers with sarcastic commentary
- Alternative lifestyles are accepted
- Save the world theme
- Behind the scenes of complex brother relationships
- Strong willed or intelligent women characters

It's just your typical isekai where MC gets flushed down a toilet and ends up in an isekai resembling medieval Europe and turns out that he's overpowered and everyone he meets just falls in love with him. The plot with the boxes had potential but the BL aspects that focus on and romanticize a toxic relationship between Yuuri and Wolfram ruins it all.

Art and Animation:
Even considering that the anime is made in 2004 both art and animation are abysmal. Looks like they wasted their entire budget ... on drawing Wolfram's pretty face. The characters look terrible when the camera doesn't focus on their faces, art style keeps on changing from episode to episode, sometimes they have these huge eyes other times there's just too much shading, sometimes they look like sticks other times they might have some volume. Similarly animation doesn't have any consistency and keeps on changing throughout. The action scenes are very poorly animated, background looks like it was animated in power point.

Setting and Story:
The setting in itself is quite absurd, why would any sane person want to put a 15 year old who knows absolutely nothing about the kingdom or politics on the throne!? The first episode mentions that Yuuri's soul had to be sent to Earth since there was impending danger to his life in their world but then nothing of that sort ever happens, looks like they entirely forgot about it. At first it's shown that the demons are equally responsible for the conflicts occurring in their world and that is the reason Yuuri agreed to become the king but later it turns out that it's only the humans that are evil and you have the king of the main opposing kingdom who is a one-dimensional character that is evil simply for the sake of being evil.

More than half of the series is just filler episodes and the pacing is quite bad. You'll most likely be questioning if this even has a story or is just episodic since the main underlying story doesn't start until the end of each season. Most of the episodes follow the same formula where the cast gets into trouble and in the end Yuuri unleashes his powers and solves the issue. Junji Nishimura did try to put in a lot of anime original explanations to fill in the plot holes from the LN but it still wasn't enough. For example the scene where Wolfram catches Yuuri from falling, it was physically and logically impossible for him to reach Yuuri given his only clue for searching Yuuri was the name of a continent and it happened in the middle of an earthquake.

Characters and Relationships:
Healthy relationships are built on respect, communication, and consent, this is something this series simply doesn't seem to understand. The author did mention that she's very bad at writing relationships and it clearly shows.

The MC Shibuya Yuuri is your run-of-the-mill goody-two-shoes, he's cringy and practically useless as the king and leaves all the political stuff up to Gwendal and Gunter while preaching about the superiority of peaceful Japan. Then we have Wolfram who is the most insufferable character in the series, he has too much pride, starts off as being racist and is overly obnoxious. Wolfram gets engaged to Yuuri due to a mishap, he hated Yuuri at first but then magically fell in love with him for no reason what-so-ever. He's overly controlling, extremely jealous and both physically and verbally abusive towards Yuuri and Yuuri being a spineless wimp just tolerates all of Wolfram's abuses and doesn't put an end to the mistaken engagement simply because he doesn't want to hurt the feelings of his abuser despite claiming to be straight throughout the series.

Conrad is honestly one of the best characters and the sole reason I don't drop the series, he's kind, caring and very loyal to Yuuri to the point he'd sacrifice himself for Yuuri's sake, his sad and dark past simply adds to his character. He's one of the most fleshed out characters if I say so myself.

Then we have Gwendal and Anissina which is yet another toxic relationship with Anissina being an obnoxious feminist who constantly complains about all men being useless even though she herself isn't any useful. Gwendal is one of those characters that I actually like, he's tough on the outside but soft on the inside and likes everything cute. Unfortunately, just like Yuuri Gwendal doesn't have the guts to tell Anissina off.

Speaking of bad relationships how can we forget Hube and Nicola, Hube is a middle aged dude who impregnated 15 year old Nicola and then abandoned her, thanks to Yuuri's intervention they do get together in the end but I can't see their relationship as flowery as the series make it out to be.

All the female side characters are just fujoshis, including the Wolfram and Yuuri's mothers who try to constantly get these two together. And speaking of Wolfram's mother, Celi, she was the queen before Yuuri but only ever cared about sleeping around with multiple men instead of ruling the country which lead to a tragedy. She never even intervened when her third son was treating her second son like an untouchable for years together. The series falls pretty low and even uses a 10 year old to try and get Yuuri and Wolfram together because who can say no to a 10 year old cute girl, right?

Conclusion:
This series has too many fillers, lots of pacing issues, inconsistent and bad art and animation, flat characters. It truly deserves to be flushed down the toilet!

Most people would say this anime is hilarious...and it is. I mean, boy gets flushed, becomes king of some weird place, tries to bring justice to the world in some very weird ways. Only, I think it's very good because it's not just hilarious.

Somehow, it's hilarious but also tragic. But not full on crying your head off tragic. It's almost like admist the comedy and the light side there's this dark side seeping out.

The plot takes really unexpected twists and turns. But not so sudden that you're taken by total surprise. You're hinted at it, but you only actually realise what you were hinted ... at until something actually happens. Although this mainly happens at the end of the anime, where things start to go wrong, which is also when it's most interesting.

Kyou Kara Mao is one of the Animes that truly makes me become an Anime Otaku. It is one of the Animes that are truly creative with how the main character would be flushed down a toilet bowl to travel to another world. It was truly an opening that you would not have expected!! It just thrilled me to how the story would progress from there!

With its story mainly focuses on the beautiful boys or as they would say bishounen, it nevertheless makes it an even thrilling anime for me! In the beginning it was truly hilarious and light with how they slowly introduced ... the characters and as we delve further into the story, it turned out to be filled with interesting plots and mystery surrounding the main character, Shibuya Yuuri and the previous Mao.

It is an Anime that not only filled with fantasy with the use of magic, swords and like an act of the medieval times, it truly focuses on the importance of friendship, leadership, and overall, it excites me to no end to make me to want to complete the series along with its prequel. It's truly a piece, worthy to be watch.

OK, Kyou Kara Maou is one of those long-run series that had really caught my attention since the first time watching.

This is the case. I love classical things. So naturally, I also love the setting in this anime, which is some sort of a parallel world decorated like ancient Europe. The idea of 'this kid has some great powers which he's not even aware of' also matches me pretty well. Then again, I love this series.

What do we have as a story? Basically this series is about how a normal teenage boy advance on becoming a king. Being a king isn't easy, duh? There are ... lots of conflicts going on and as a king, one should somehow find the best way to solve it. Yuuri Shibuya, as a character, is typical: a naive kid with a strong sense of justice and despises fighting so much. Actually, in this series, that kind of character brings change. The Mazoku race, once so proud and won't hesitate to wipe out all humans that stand on their way, are slowly changing, thanks to their new dense king. Yuuri's character is also refreshing in his own ways, even though there are limits on being dumb.

This series starts as a gag anime. It doesn't actually have a main point to complete in the beginning-- or it SEEMED to not to-- so it's full of filler episodes. I didn't mind anyway, because the stories are always amusing. BUT!! There's always a but. Later on, you'll realize that this series isn't all about gags, jokes, stupid moments... but actually has quite a well-built plot. The ending of this season was really interesting, IMO. That moment when a gag isn't just gag.. ooohhh the thrills.

So what next? Oh of course, the shounen-ai aspect! KKM eminates this shounen-ai aura, and that's right. This is a really prominent part of the story, and so, um, you better bear it. Yes, there are some sliiight (not quite the slight one of your BL radar is trained enough) hints of gay, but I guess no worries, because you won't find extreme homo romance here. But maybe, just maybe, you will begin liking shounen-ai after you finish watching this series, because, gimme a break. 95% characters of this series are boys, after all.

No, not some sort of 'OH GOD I LIKE THIS GUY--' or 'OH PLEASE DON'T GO NEAR HIM, I'M JEALOUS' thingie. It's all pure hints. Yuuri is straight. Even though..... Gunther and Wolfram are indeed a bit disturbing. Especially Gunther, seriously. But this first season doesn't contain too much BL hints. There are more on the 3rd season and KKM R.

But seriously, if you came here after watching some intelligent things and hope to find a new anime to fulfill your epicness needs, you can leave now. This anime is dumb, seriously. But oh boy, I can't even tell how much had I enjoyed this whole thing.

I started to watch Kyou Kara Maou simply because of some official pictures on Zerochan. It looked like that sort of "we're-not-shounen-ai-it's-just-happened-that-everyone-here-is-gay" animes, and of course there was wolfram who's a blond tsundere teen and I LOVE BLOND TSUNDERE TEENS.
Believing this anime is going to be another of these try-too-hard too long fantasy animes, I ... invented a friend of mine to watch the first episode together.

HE JUST FLUSHED DOWN THE TOILET OK. AND FIND HIMSELF IN PARALLEL UNIVERSE.
The shock from the first episode made me crush my head against the wall because for their ideas, face palm is not even enough. Oh my god.
"20 minutes of my life that I will never get back", my friend summarized the experience.
"Yes, I agree", I said back.
Of course I continued just after she went back to her business.

AND THEN CAME THE SECOND EP. NO SPOILERS, JUST TELLING IT'S SOMETHING LIKE THE BEST THING EVER. I cried from laugh, I swear. I have no idea who's that person who thought it's a good a good idea to make an anime from this story. Not a good idea. GREAT IDEA. Studio Deen, this time you've outdone yourselves.

After these two episodes, the way into watching the whole show with all their seasons (DON'T YOU EVER DARE WATCH THE 3RD SEASON) was easy. This is probably one of the more stupid thing's I've ever watched, but I regret no second that I spent over this thing. And seriously, there is even A REAL PLOT after something like 40 episodes! Yes, who cares that for a good plot you can see another anime without spending 800 minutes of useless filler eps. But I loved these episodes more than the plot, really. If you give me another 100 episodes of the nothing that happened in most of the show, I'll watch it right now.

Now, for the rating:

Story:
You know what's funny? That after the real story starts, it is surprisingly good. It actually have plot-twists and it's getting interesting with the time, even in compare to another animes.
...Or maybe this anime made me low my standards, I dunno.
Anyway, it doesn't matter since THERE ARE MORE FILLERS THAN PLOT.
So if you agree, I'm gonna rate the fillers instead of the plot:

Characters:
oh my god I love them I love them all
Except Sara, but thanks goodness, he doesn't appear in the first season.
The reasons why I love the characters:
1. The characters are hilarious. Yuuri, as the main character, is a great example for the classic average Japanese student in animes. Which means HE'S DUMB. HE DOESN'T MAKE ANY FUCK*NG SENSE. And yet, all the characters around him takes him seriously and guard him while making his ideas real. The kid has no idea about politics, and yet he runs the country. And somehow everything goes out well just because Yuuri's ideas are nice to others and we all know that LOVE POWER WINS or something like that. Thanks to a 15 years old boy, all wars has been stopped and the human residents are no more scared. YOU CANNOT HATE YUURI.
And it's not just him. Each character of the cast has her own idiotic points. Gunter for example. OR CHERI. BEST MOTHER EVER. I love anyoooone realllyyy

2. WOLFRAM IS PART OF THE CAST. HE'S A BLONDE TSUNDERE ROYAL GAY TEEN. HE WEARS PINK NIGHT GOWN. BEST CHARACTER. MY FAVORITE.
11/10 for the characters including Wolfram

Art:
In the pictures it looks pretty fine. IN THE PICTURES. In the anime itself, specially in the first half of the anime, it is drawn terribly. In some pictures the proportions just doesn't make any sense, like in episode 2, where in some face-shots of Wolfram is... I MEAN, REALLY, the proportions between the forehead the the rest of the face WHAT THEY EVEN ARE. (I've watched that episode around 10 times so yes, I remember.)
In episode 65, another example, THE WHOLE DRAWING STYLE CHANGES. THEY ALL LOOK 5 YEARS OLDER THAN THEY ARE. Watch it and see yourself. And if we got to that point, I really can't count the number of times when you could see that the animators changed. I think there were parts when hair length and such had actually changed.
A good thing is that in the OVA and the 3RD season the animation get's a lot better, which makes you able to that their drawing style is actually really not bad. Too bad that at least half of the 3RD series SHOULD HAD NEVER SEE DAY LIGHT.

About the design itself, I think it was pretty fine and when they remembered how to draw the characters it all looked pretty nice.
4/10 for the art

Sound:
THERE WAS A WHOLE EPISODE WHEN THE OST WAS JUST AN ANNOYING LOOP GOES UP AND DOWN. Even my mom became crazy from just by being around while me and my sister are watching it.
About the voice actors, I think they all suited to the characters they played and were dumb just as they needed. Yozak's voice was really annoying though.
I wish one day I'll be able to sing as well as the singer in the opening, he's just my idol. *-*
10/10 FOR YUURI'S ABILITIES TO PLAY FLUTE

Let's just pretend that you are not searching for an intelligent anime, and you're a teen girl who's searching for a chip entertainment. YOU CAME TO THE RIGHT PLACE.
Starting with countless shounen ai hints, going through gay jokes and finish by Yozak's Drag-Queen career (yes, a spy, I believe you) this show it just A FANSERVICE PARADISE. I don't believe that even one male from the main cast is actually straight except Yuuri, and you can argue also about that. Because if you don't mind, I choose to ignore the second season.

Just in the one of the first episodes, the anime find it right to remind you that GAY MARRIAGE IN UNIVERSE ARE TOTALLY OK. Nothing bad can come from a series which tells you such thing~~~~~~~
Coming though a huge fanservice twist just in the beginning of the series, two options are left for us: Either that the creators of the anime really like to treat their female fans, or that the writers of the script are two 16-years-old-fangirls having a sleepover. Really, after watching the anime the second option even make sense. The anime even take sort of seriously two options for a gay relationship for Yuuri. Yes, YuuRam an ConYuu fangirls, you guessed right.

BUT, as a shounen ai anime, THIS WAS A DISAPPOINTMENT. SINCE IT'S NOT A SHOUNEN AI ANIME.
But as one who really hoped for it, I can say I felt sort of sad discover it's not.
Because in my opinion it has it's potential.
I guess I got those hopes that my wishes will become true by looking at the spoiler pictures on Google. If you watched the anime and did so you know for sure that some things in sceenshots seems TOTALLY DIFFERENT THAN THEY REALLY WERE (no, I'm not talking about actual yaoi you pervs, just about serious shounen relationships).
Yes, I know the question that comes out is "why for god's sake did you believed something will go serious even after you watched the first 10 episodes, you silly girl?"
I HAD SOME FAKE SPOILERS! >:| Don't look at me like that.
Too bad nothing had happened, because the scenes I made up in my mind after seeing the fake-scenes ideas were beautiful. Too bad that the anime went fully-dumb instead of trying take ideas from fake spoilers too, because I believed they could do an amazing thing.
Ok, I don't believe they could do an amazing thing.
KKM should stay the way it is already. Being sensitive and sweet isn't their thing. At least not in the shounen ai way.

This anime had totally awoken my fangirl senses, just telling.

OK OK OK. I KNOW HOW YOU ARE LOOKING AT ME. I'll just say it straight:
I LOVE KYOU KARA MAOU. OH GOD, I LOVE KYOU KARA MAOU.
This is just a piece of masterpiece in it's own way. I cried from laugh at some parts, and really, there were some part when I just gone totally "aww". Wolfie in the end of the series I want to hug him and never leaveeee ;___;
The characters are funny and sweet at points, the real plot isn't bad and the rest of the episodes are just SO FUN TO WATCH. I may had watched the whole thing with the most cynical mood, but my enjoyment were 100% real. If you'll watch it with this kind of mood too, I'm pretty sure you'll enjoy. (If you won't, leave after ep 3, this kind of show is not going to change.)

So yes. The anime is dumb. But it's also my top#2 with no regrets. Ok, with a little of regrets. But I really DO LOVE IT SO MUCH, and I'm pretty sure that bored people like me who just want to find something stupid to spend their time with will enjoy this too.

Enter Kyo Kara Maoh, a mediocre adventure of a preteen named Yuuri, who is suddenly thrown into another world to become the next Demon King of the Great Demon Kingdom.

Alright, this anime is NOT BAD, but neither is it able to shine among the other anime shows. Sometimes the story becomes a little lackluster, other times it keeps my attention. Some of the filler episodes and even the main story in Kyo Kara Maoh can be extremely boring and predictable. Other times though, Kyo Kara Maoh delivers such as when Yuuri, Wolfram, Conrad, and other Demon tribesmen go to the human world. Also, the ... last couple episode will keep you tense on your feet.

Lets talk about the art and sound in Kyo Kara Maoh. The artwork is neither bad nor good, just like the story. Some of the soundtracks, such as when Yuuri turns into his demon form are pretty memorable. The majority of soundtracks though are forgettable compared to other anime shows. I actually prefer the English dubs as Conrad's and Gunter's voice actors sound strange and less memorable in the Japanese version.

The character relationships are probably the best part of this show. Yuuri's adviser Gunter is probably my favorite character of the show, due to his eccentric character and extreme devotion to Yuuri. It is odd though that there is a lot more guy characters than girl characters (who are often assigned to more comedic roles).

Overall, this show is a satisfying watch and should be watched if you have nothing else to watch. Lets face it, there exists much better epic anime shows like Death Note, Code Geass, One Piece, and Yu Yu Hakusho. Kyo Kara Maoh might be a forgettable adventure story, but it entertains.

Honestly, when i started watching KKM, i really got hooked to the anime... It's not 'that' interesting, but I really don't know why I got so addicted... Perhaps the story lines were very funny... I really laugh my heart out whenever I watched those episodes. Even the characters were simly amazing, they always have their ways to make me smile.
And of course, the story where it revolves was one of my favorite genre that i loved watching. It also has some twist that it makes the story NO BORING.
From the very start of the episode, it was indeed great, especially when Yuri Shibuya got flushed ... on the toilet bowl... i really can't get enough until the next episodes, the plot was good, its climax was good, everything else, I could say for myself, was great...
It was all worth watching 'til the end.
It was simply IRRESISTABLE... and ADDICTABLE.

It took me just three weeks to completely finish watching all 117 episodes. It was just that good!

Beautiful art and sountrack, a brilliant plotline and some FANTASTIC characters!

There is some shounen-ai but that's really only to add to the comedy element of this anime, which is already massive. There are some really funny moments, sentimental moments, sweet moments and just pure EPIC moments!

Trust me when I say that you won't be disappointed!

I found this anime totally by chance, and I am SO HAPPY I did. I started rewatching it almost as soon as I was done (I don't rewatch shows often), and I forced a bunch of my friends and family to watch it with me.
One important point is that I was told it was a shounen ai, but I wouldn't watch it for that alone, or you'll be disappointed: Yuri insists he's not gay, and thinks male/male relationships are weird, although there are characters who seem to crush on him despite that.
All the characters are awesome. Wolfram is my favourite, but that's a close ... one. Even the minor characters tend to be recurring, and have more than enough personality and backstory.
My favourite thing about the show is how well it can switch between comedy and seriousness. It starts off rather light, but it has many more serious moments later, especially in the second season (which has an awesome plot, by the way). Even during those moments, you can still expect the comic reliefs to act in character and lighten the mood.
This show never fails to put a smile on my face.

I just happen to stumble across this Anime on YouTube and I checked it out!
The story was Great! Even if there was season 2 and season 3 I just wished they put a lot more stories! even if season 1 episode was long I just wish it was longer! :P
The Art was Amazing I even tried to draw it but it didn't really turned as I wanted it to.. The art was great there isn't anything wrong with it!
The sound when he transform and stuff is so dramatic! I was always waiting for that part and the sound! And the characters ... voices in Japanese or English nothing was wrong it's both great! I specially like the theme song I always listen to it!
The Character is both serious and hilarious at the same time! It always makes me laugh specially Wolfram, Gunter, Gwendal, and a lot more!
Enjoyment....It's really great I can't describe it! I Enjoyed it a lot specially when they where funny!
Overall It's just great! I'm just complaining that I wanted more Episodes or even another more Season...I know I'm asking for too much but it's just great to watch it's funny! :D

So first off, Yuri and Wolfram all the way. I love them/ this ship
But I couldn't watch the whole series for nothing, I'm getting older and "little moments," aren't enough for me anymore ( if you know what I mean.)
Don't get me wrong, from what I remember, the show was enjoyable and funny at times ( a lot of times) , and it can stand alone as just a story. But again I didn't start the show for the story itself ( I don't regret watching it though.)
If you want to know whether or not to watch this show then think about this... Do ... I want to watch a show that has
a decent story ( not an intense one if I remember correctly )
funny moments
good mix of characters
a pinch of gayness ( not really but Wolfram really does care for Yuri and that's not really a spoiler )
