Date A Live II: Kurumi Star Festival

If you're reading this review, I'll assume you've seen Date A Live so I don't need to go into the details. I'll just write a simple review of this OVA

Story 9/10:
Let's face it, we all love Kurumi Tokisaki, I mean, who doesn't. And this OVA gives the fans what they want. Kurumi on a date with Shido. Shido meets up with Kurumi at the Tanabata Festival and they go on a date which ends with them taking a wedding photograph together. A little plot twist at the ending is for you to see.

Art 8/10:
Not as good as Date A Live 1 but still not bad. ... It was fairly good and pleasant to watch.

Sound 8/10:
The opening and ending of the Date A Live II are used.

Character 9/10:
We mostly see Kurumi and Shido in this OVA but a few minutes are also given to Tohka, Kotori and Yoshino. These are the characters shown in this OVA.

Enjoyment 10/10:
I'm a big fan of Kurumi and I enjoyed this OVA from start to end. It's a really good watch.

Overall, this was a really good OVA. Do watch it. Kurumi fans will especially love it.

The story was a bit predictable,*SPOILER* what with all the death flags Kurumi puts out, *SPOILER END* but I enjoyed it anyway. Good story.

Art: 7
The art was not great, but good enough. There are some scenes that dipped in quality, but it's tolerable enough.

Sound: 9
The voices were well done (Kurumi's VA did a great job, as usual). The sounds were okay.

Character: 8
... Gives us an idea of how Kurumi's character developed over time.

Enjoyment: 8
It was a little sad toward the end, but fulfilling.

If you're a Kurumi fan, this is for you. If not, well, watch it anyway.

One word for this OVA------> WOW!

The story isn't the best ever but I must say that I really enjoyed it. It's simple, comedic and straight forward involving a good romance without beating too much around the bush. The end however is sad but not all romance stories have a happy ending BUT I would really love to see a sequel to the OVA or even better, a Season 3 of Date a Live. Whether or not you're a Kurumi fan it doesn't matter because the OVA is well made and enjoyable.

I heard that there have been improvements when it comes to the art of this ... OVA but I’ve barely noticed it. Well this is probably because I’ve always thought that the art for Date a Live for both Season one and two including the first OVA was really good.

As for character, I guess we got the opportunity to see the innocent and cute side of Tokisaki Kurumi which I would love to see once again.

As for the sound, they are the same one used as in the previous seasons which are still kickass.

Generally speaking, it’s an amazing OVA without any exaggerations which really lives up to its original series. I bet a lot of you would really want a third season so bad and soon after watching it.

Date a Live. Oh Date a Live. I have always praised this show for being something of a gem in the harem genre because it's harem, with a plot. And when this OVA and its plot was announced, well, I was ecstatic.

Story (7.99/10): The story of this OVA follows the story of Shidou, our main protagonist, like the rest of the DAL series. On one faithful encounter, he finds on the corner of the street, the most dangerous spirit/best girl, Tokisaki Kurumi. Wary by her actions, Shidou goes along with her and does what he does best, ... go on a date.

Now on the surface, this OVA doesn't really have much substance. Just like the rest of the series, it does what it does best, which is Shidou taking a spirit out on a date, only with a bit of a twist to it. What really makes this OVA very worthwhile to any fan of the series is character depth. It provides a good chunk of information and character on the one character that anyone who's watched DAL can agree is a fantastic character, Kurumi. The OVA follows the same format as the rest of the show, but at the same time, it gives a lot of depressing undertones that make this OVA more than just a simple extra episode.

By the end of the OVA, we get to see more of who Kurumi is, or was, or whatever. (Time business is tricky.) It gives a lot of much needed depth to a very important character to this series, and overall, showcases that this series isn't just some generic harem.

Characters (8.21/10): The only two characters are really featured in this OVA from the DAL universe are Shidou and Kurumi "Nightmare" Tokisaki. And from these two, we get a large chunk of development that rivals a lot of other character complexity.

Let's start with the real star of the DAL series, Tokisaki Kurumi. (Let's be honest here. She kinda is.) Kurumi has always been that yandere-esque character, being more sadistic and bloodthirsty than any other character featured in this series with the personality that to be honest, made the show a lot better than it could've been without her. With this OVA though, we have something I didn't expect which is, character complexity, without really any character change at all. The reason why this OVA becomes a lot more serious than the past two seasons is strictly because of the fact that we as the audience understand more on just how complex of a character Kurumi is. She's not just a straight yandere, she has motives that go beyond what we as the audience understand and has a similar personality to boot. She's kind of like an anti-hero in a sense, but also a villain. She's helpful in some sense, but hindering in others. You can kill her, but at the same time you can't. And adding the new piece that we learn about her to Kurumi's already puzzling character makes the series feel so much better.

And then we have Shidou who, as expected, does not get a lot of development, but he gets a decent amount. What I really like about this OVA is not just how it added onto Kurumi, a character that we've wanted to see again for SO long, but how her character has made an impact on Shidou himself. She is currently the only spirit to not have been sealed and she remains that title to this day, being a very cunning and coy character to boot. And with the end of the OVA, you can see how much she has affected him, changing him as a character, and making him more of character rather than a plot device like all other harem MC's. (Looking at you, Ichika.)

Aside from those two, Tohka, Kotori, and Yoshino all make appearances, but they're rather minor and only get about three or so minutes of screentime each.

Overview:

+/- Decent but somewhat unneeded cameos from other characters

Art and Sound (7.32/10): The art for DAL has always been moderately well done, looking very bright and colorful with a nice white sheen over everything. Somehow though, this OVA didn't look as good as I thought. The quality seemed to have dipped a bit for the OVA as sometimes Shidou looks a bit awkward at times. But for the most part, the OVA still looks rather nice and stays with the artstyle that DAL has stayed consistent with.

As for sound, we have both the OP and ED of the second season of DAL. I personally do like these tracks and nice heroic and triumphant music does fit with the season and with DAL in general. There is one theme though that I am quite glad made its return again, and that is Kurumi's personal theme. No other character in this series has quite a noticeable theme and it really does show the kind of character that Kurumi is. The sort of sexy Jazz fits incredibly well with her and I thank AIC+ for putting it in as it is actually a very memorable track that I enjoy every time it comes on.

Personal Enjoyment (9.34/10): Ok, Ok, I'll come clean. The series Date A Live is without a doubt, my favorite anime series, period. Kurumi is my favorite girl in this series, so naturally, I give this OVA a high mark in personal enjoyment because, I freaking love everything that happened with this OVA. And I am quite satisfied having had watched that.

Did I like this OVA?

YES. Kurumi is best girl, period. All fanboying aside, the OVA was quite enjoyable. It very clearly shows what this series has in terms of potential storytelling and how complex some of its characters can become.

What didn't I like about this OVA?

Aside from it being shorter than I would've liked it (I would've liked an hour long OVA), the pacing of the OVA was a bit odd. It was unbalanced with a very slow beginning and a very quick end. They didn't let the twist sink in enough at the end and I honestly felt quite unsatisfied while watching it.

Would I recommend it?

If you've watched the first two seasons of DAL and the previous OVA, and you liked all of it, this is a must-see. Aside from that, I wouldn't recommend it due to how all of the events from the previous seasons lead up to this one and one would feel out of place diving into something that has tons of backstory behind it. But rest assured, this is a fantastically crafted OVA.

There is a moment here that perfectly captures what made the original Date A Live so fun. Tokisaki meets Yoshino and describes her time with Shido with sexual details growing. Yoshino's reactions are priceless. Let these silly characters roam free and be as weird as the are, and it's all fun. The cast may even audition for a new season of Galaxy Angel.

Too bad it's just one scene.

Most of the time, the purpose of this OVA is unclear. Shido and Tokisaki are having fun, but it's not the Tokisaki we know. We don't get even glimpses of Tokisaki at her best - unhinged, dangerous and ... plain weird. Her school girl antics don't do much on their own, and Shido doesn't have enough personality to make the interaction interesting.

Meanwhile, Kotori, Tohka and Yoshino are being funny off-screen. Until the camera finally finds them, we get more of the Harem aspect than their personalities. They were smart enough to use Yoshino for that one moment where the personality is allowed to surface. After that, all they do is just stand there.

The twist in the end is supposed to give purpose to the whole thing, but it just raises questions. It explains all we got before, but we didn't need 25 minutes waiting for the twist. It's one that expands Tokisaki's nature a little, but not enough.

If anything, it makes you wonder why she was AWOL in the second season. She has such odd superpowers. The whole clone thing is fuzzy, but there is so much they can do with it. At worst, it just makes everything feel more tense and dramatic. But it's used here not to create tension or drama. All we get is a twist. If I saw this before seeing the second season, I'd probably be more disappointed.

It's frustrating, really. Date A Live doesn't just have brilliant character design. It has an odd concept that was cleverly used to tell a story, not as a punchline. The first season had its moments of clever subversions. Somehow, though, the creators keep fumbling with the material and never realizing its potential. The light novel series is still going and the franchise is big enough for all these spin-offs. Hopefully it'll get the ending it deserves. This is still worth a watch if you like the characters enough.

For some reason, Shido came off with a little bit more personality here. It felt like he had a hero's complex, a desire to help everyone he can. There wasn't enough time to develop it. Maybe he remains a plot convenience.

I was going to cry at the end.
Ok, this ova when you first see the synopsis on MAL, it gives you a WHAT? reaction. But that shouldn't keep you from watching it. I assume you already watched Date A Live and finished both seasons to watch and find this ova to watch. Enough dillydallying, into the episode.

Story 10/10
The story first starts with Kurumi, the worst Spirit, at one side of the sidewalk, and the other side of the sidewalk, is Shido. Kurumi asks Shido on a date surprisingly and I know what you are thinking, This girl tried to kill him. BUUUt, Shido under circumstances ... went on the date with of cource doubt in his mind, and us watching this too. They had fun like normal teenagers. They went to the planetarium, and near the Tanabata festival (the festival where you can write a wish on a piece of paper and hang it on a bamboo), Kurumi wanted to go to the wedding hall with Shido. Shido Obliged with a little push from Kurumi. At the same time, Other stuff happen with the other three spirits (Tohka, Yoshino, Kotori). Kurumi and Shido eventually took a wedding picture and Kurumi and Shido went to go hang a wish of their owns up. Kurumi hid what her wish was Until (PLOT TWIST.) And then it breaks your heart and make you feel bad that you doubted this Kurumi for the entire episodes. Then, At the end, Shido Hangs Kurumi's wish after he reads it onto the highest bamboo he can find so the wish would hopefully come true. Lastly, back at the house, Shido talks with the girls with the screen showing that wedding picture Kurumi and Shido Took.
Plz, Go watch this, you won't regret it, it leaves you with feels.

I feel like the artstyle is reletivaly ok, the op was the second season op, so the artstyle was really good. And throughout the episode, all the character Espacially that wedding picture was all good.

It is the same tracks from the second season, like I said, the op is the second season one, and the music is pretty good. The voices were like normal too.

Character 10/10
Even though it didn't show the second season's spirit at all, It at least showed the first season's three spirits sometime in this episode. But mostly, it is Kurumi and Shido, Kurumi was really planned out for this episode, the facial expression, the voice, the movement, it was flawless. It showed what Kurumi is like before she (Plot Twist).

Enjoyment 10/10
Right after the second season's finale, Eager for more, I searched and found this Ova so I decided to watch it, it first didn't really turned out to what I expected, and I doubted Kurumi just a little bit at the end thinking she will make a move, but then the hardcore harsh Plot Twist got me, the feels were so harsh, and I was feeling I can cry. It makes me wanting for more at the end with the Wedding Picture ending screen. But The emotion and the feel is excatly why I Loved this episode so much, to think to give the one who watched this so much feelings is excellent from the writers too.

This Ova has to be one of the best episodes I've seen, I can argue that this episode was even better then any of the episodes in both seasons, this episode had humor, romance, and plot twist that make us go on the feel train. So go and watch it, I promise you you won't be disappointed.

Near the end of reviewing all the seasons, OVA's, and the movie. I mentioned in the season 2 review that they did good but not as good as season 1. In short, it was a step back from introducing new stuff and more just keeping to formula. They brought something new but left it for either a season 3 that is either never coming out or taking too long to do or just to cliffhang us. Either way there was some ground to make up and so in pops this OVA. Let's get to it.

Story: 9
Honestly, this story got to me since it was all ... about the character I liked the most. A story all about Kurumi, all encompassd in a date with Shido. I'm not going to spoil the story for those who haven't watched it, but it is good. You learn a little bit about her that you didn't think about at the time and honestly it will leaving you thinking more on it afterwards. At least it did for me. Compared to the first OVA or even the second season, this story feels better writen. There was even some added comedy for the sake of offsetting the seriousness.

Art: 8
Same stuff from season 2 but since there isn't a lot of action, the animations to their poorer quality here. Honestly, it shined in a lot of places and was a relaxed in others. This section just has a running theme of people not having much to say about it since when its good, you don't notice it too much. Which it is here.

Sound:10
Seeing how this is a story about Kurumi, her different themes are showcased here. Which is good, those tracks are very unique to her so might as well. Same voice actors from the show of course and they did a good job as always. They used the season 2 opening which is good but not as good as season 1's but I'm done ragging on about that. The ending was good as well and really fit the tone that the OVA left it on. All in all, they kept the bar high with sound as always.

Character: 10
Again, it's an episode about Kurumi. What else would you need for it not to be a perfect 10 lol. On a serious note, they really did a good job showcasing her here. You saw a part of her that you rarely see whic is awesome. Other characters make appearances but only to bring some comedy to the episode, but they weren't a waste of screen time and that's what counts. They really tried to give more depth to a character that is really popular among fans and to that I say thanks guys. There was a lot of emotion deplayed in this episode and it was preformed beautifully.

Enjoyment: 10
While it is only an OVA, this I felt was worth the watch. I may just be biased since she is literally my favorite character from this show but I feel you really get into it with this, at least I did. You learn only a little bit but it goes a long way. If there was ever a message to take away from this OVA, it would go something like this....

Remeber the good times, and cherish those memmories. People change, but the past doesn't.

For me, date a live is one of many mainstream harem anime. This OVA, you will meet the luckiest man ever, Shido and Kurumi, your typical beautiful anime girl.Ok, now i will begin my review.

You know, that the studio that direct season 1 and season 2 is different. Because the ova is after season 2, some of you maybe know that the quality of art is low. I confess; i dont like the quality. If you are the typical who watch anime consist of the art, this anime maybe will disgust you.

You will ... see the different part character of Kurumi. The ova focus on personality of Kurumi that you never seen. But lack on other this anime character.

I like the op and ed music. For the character voice, there some part that miss the tone of character.

Not really enjoy, because some character really piss me off. the plot only for fanservice.

Arguably better than all of Date A Live II.

With a sweet and simple plotline, this one-episode OVA sheds a whole new light on Kurumi and her relationship with Shido. Although the ending was rather (somewhat) saddening, it was moving in its own unique way.

One thing that this OVA (and not a lot of other OVAs do) especially integrates well is the use of symbolism. Take note, for example, of what Kurumi writes during the festival. It's very apparent by the end what her writing symbolizes, and it further strengthens Shido's perception of who Kurumi could and should be.

Given this, there are a few things that ... this OVA misses the mark on (but again, this is only half an hour, so these are relatively minor). There are some minor plot elements that are somewhat questionable. On top of that, there are many characters missing from the original series (but I guess this is fine because, after all, this is mainly about Kurumi and Shido) and those who are present serve little purpose whatsoever.

Aside from that, there isn't much too critique since this is just a simple half-hour episode, but this was definitely worth the watch.

This surely was something.
i mean, the feels man, the feels...
This OVA is the best episode from the DaL (atleast for Kurumi fans, because this is everything they/me wanted...).
But with an ending plot twist (watch it, i will not talk about that)
Simply, Shidou and Kurumi meets on street, she asks him about if he wants to go with her on date. First shock. They... She decides to go on Tanaba festival, on that day they will do so much thing, like, something as time never existed (Compressed to 30mis offcourse). Then the ending. Second shock...
As I said this was something I wanted to see, I was ... hoping for it in Second season but no, it must be an OVA -_-. Nevermind this was great... I dont know what should I write next, I had wrote everything that I consider helpfull without spoilers...

If you liked the tv series, first season, then you should watch this OVA.

The OVA concentrates more on the relationship with Kurumi, instead of humor and action, and does that in a very clever way...
Threw the hole story you are stuck on your screen, because you are suspicious or because you want to know how what is gonna happen... and then it end with a(n) (emotional) bang.

The OVA really touched me and even made me cry.

WARNING;
1) I discommend to watch the OVA if you don't want people to see you cry and/or if you don't want to cry.
2) I recommend people to ... watch the OVA alone (and as soon as possible after they watched at least the first season) for the maximum effect.

Nekomancer

I mean, where do you even start?

Utilising one of the best characters of the series, Kurumi Tokisaki steals this episode.

The art is frankly gorgeous with some shots like they were lifted straight from a high budget Hollywood film, especially the Planetarium talk.

Sound design is on point, with all the memorable cues and a few new ones, topped off by brilliant voice work by both the Sub AND the Dub as they both managed to capture the full sense of emotion and heartbreak of the final revelation (no spoilers here). I honestly found myself crying. Even the little moments get there chance to shine (again, no ... spoilers here).

It ever so slightly drags when the camera and story linger on Yoshino and Kotori but they still provide some of the best laughs.

Overall a must watch for any fan of this series.

Two words to describe this OVA episode : "Surprisingly good!"

If you are reading this review, I assume that you have watched both seasons of DaL and understand Kurumi's personality very well so I won't be holding back on describing Kurumi's personality and why I explaining love this OVA so much.

Story - 9: This was a great romantic OVA between Kurumi, who arguably had one of the least screen time as a "spirit" in both seasons aside from Yoshino and Shido, and probably had one of the most interesting personalities in the entire series, with her being a Yandere. It was a wonderful and touching episode ... of OVA that showed the cuter and romantic side of Kurumi and her feelings she had for Shido at one point in time in the main series. Very well written and executed

P.S. I loved the build up to the final moments in this OVA episode which was pretty touching.

Art - 9: I absolutely love the art and animation when they revealed Kurumi in her wedding gown. She was gorgeous! Apart from that, the art in certain scenes at the end were very well drawn and animated too.

Sound - 10: The background music used was spectacular that added on to the mood during the climax, making the climax of this OVA episode very well executed and enjoyable. Impressive

Character - 10: We can all agree that Yandere Kurumi was pretty damn enjoyable to watch whenever she appeared in the main series. In this OVA episode, it showcased the romantic and cuter side of her if she wasn't a Yandere, although she still had some eye expressions of a Yandere in some scenes, which was adorable.

Enjoyment - 9: I enjoyed this episode very much and the 30 minutes felt more like 10 minutes and passed by very quickly with the interesting story plot and the build up to the final moments in this OVA that was very well executed.

Overall - 9: I have to say, I didn't expect much when going into this OVA. After reading the synopsis, I expected it to be some cliche erotic KurumixShido OVA that was probably going to end up with some interruptions in between when the "climax" of the erotic scenes arrived. However, I must say this OVA was surprisingly good and had a sweet ending to it. Hope to see more of Kurumi if there is any third season to this series and her Yandere mode :3

I won't like a long review, this is just an OVA after all.

I really liked this ova, there's some nice comedy and we get to see a kurumi that loves the mc and they go on a proper date, something we haven't seen before. It was fairly moving, but personally I kind of wish it had been less of a tragedy at the end, I don't feel like this anime should actually have much drama and tragedy seeing how the story is subpar and there's plot holes everywhere, but the author doesn't feel the same, clearly.

Well, I guess that in a way, it's fairly ... well done for once, it's certainly a good snap above the main show. It properly wakes emotions, is properly amusing and touching, something the main show failed with most of the time. I just hope that we will actually see that kurumi again, it'd be cool if her personality replaced the main one :D

I’m compelled to write this review because this OVA made me feel something no other OVA has done before and that is a different kind of “fan service”.

When talking about fan service I think we all understand it as just that fan+service something the fans want to see. Usually this involves the characters looking more provocative but sometimes what the fans want to see is a What If narrative that lets fans enjoy for example their favorite characters ending up together. I feel like this kind of fan service is different and personally I had never looked for it or thought I wanted it until ... I saw this OVA. Now i would totally buy a overpriced blue ray if that meant I’d get to see a full season of Kurumi x Shidou episodes even if it had no relevance to the main plot whatsoever.

10/10 fan service. Would recommend. Will watch again.

Kurumi fans beware! I will say one thing and one thing only, do you like Kurumi in the Date a Live series? If you do, one does not simply miss such a masterpiece for an OVA.

So let's start, Story 10/10, yes simply the perfect day with Kurumi + an unexpected ending that may break your heart a little but it shows Shido great side of character traits which is not a very common thing.

Art, very very good. There could have been a little more vivid colors at some point that's why I give it a 9/10.

Sound classically very good. 8/10.

Characters. 20/10. Out fucking standing. ... Kurumi's best character traits are highlighted. Shiro's kindness is shown and everyone else doesn't even matter.

Enjoyment...pure bliss until the twist in the end. But still 10/10.

Overall Score 10/10, you bet I watched this 5 times. I know the plot in the OVA inside out and outside in.

Most of OVA are only true fan service without thinking about the coherence of the story : showing boobs or fight we want to see and the job is done.

In this OVA, each moment is well constructed and used until the end for a global comprehension. This OVA is enough good for wanting to watch it again.

The only pseudo-negativ point is the obligation to see the anime to understand why this OVA is well done. I put 6/10 for the 2 seasons because it's a good anime but without originality : girls fall from the sky, live with the main character and love him.

If you ... like this kind of story, I highly recommend you to watch it (after all some fights are good and it's fun) and above all, watch this OAV.

If you don't like, don't force you to watch the anime only for an OVA, other anime have good OVA. But don't watch it without seeing the anime, you will just find that's it's a classical OVA like all others.

Overall, this was a really great ova, and my first section will be as to why to watch it, but then i have to do some analysis to show how brilliant the creators are.

While the ova says it is the 11th episode, it really doesn't' fit all too well in the season 2 arc, but don't let that stop you. The interactions between kurame (sorry if im spelling wrong, but the girl with the clock eye) and the mc are just so heart warming, and the ending was so befitting

now for some spoilers

in the end, the only logical ending was the one chosen, so that ... was good. but what i realized that i doubt many people did is the lie kurame told. She told the woman receptionist at the wedding place where kurame and the mc took their photos that she was dying. she didn't have long in her life. AND SHE DIDN'T. I love this little egg. Initially the audience and even the mc thinks it to be a lie, like her evil self, but she knew she was going to die as seen in her wish the mc hangs up. She really didn't have much time left. Although some bits were predicated such as i want to see the mc again and that kurame is a time clone, it was really great. This captures all of the essence of what made date a live great

Well, where do I begin with this anime? Date A Live II: Kurumi Star Festival certainly has a story, but unfortunately, it's not the most engaging or original one out there. The concept of a boy having to date powerful spirits to save the world is nothing new, and this anime doesn't bring much new to the table.

As for the main characters, they're mostly forgettable. The protagonist is your typical bland harem lead, and the female spirits don't have much depth or personality beyond their archetypes. The music is serviceable but doesn't stand out as anything remarkable.

Overall, I suppose if ... you're a fan of the first season of Date A Live, then you might enjoy this continuation. But if you're looking for a fresh and exciting anime to watch, I wouldn't necessarily recommend this one. Unless, of course, you enjoy watching predictable storylines and one-dimensional characters.

So there you have it, folks! Date A Live II: Kurumi Star Festival gets a mediocre 7.222 out of 10 from me, with a recommendation that's as lukewarm as a day-old cup of tea.
