Kamisama Hajimemashita

High schooler Nanami Momozono has quite a few problems of late, beginning with her absentee father being in such extreme debt that they lose everything. Downtrodden and homeless, she runs into a man being harassed by a dog. After helping him, she explains her situation, and to her surprise, he offers her his home in gratitude. But when she discovers that said home is a rundown shrine, she tries to leave; however, she is caught by two shrine spirits and a fox familiar named Tomoe. They mistake her for the man Nanami rescued—the land god of the shrine, Mikage. Realizing that Mikage must have sent her there as a replacement god, Tomoe leaves abruptly, refusing to serve a human.

Rather than going back to being homeless, Nanami immerses herself in her divine duties. But if she must keep things running smoothly, she will need the help of a certain hot-headed fox. In her fumbling attempt to seek out Tomoe, she lands in trouble and ends up sealing a contract with him. Now the two must traverse the path of godhood together as god and familiar; but it will not be easy, for new threats arise in the form of a youkai who wants to devour the girl, a snake that wants to marry her, and Nanami's own unexpected feelings for her new familiar.

Absolutely LOVED watching every single second of Kamisama Hajimemashita! Although the anime is starting to get on the older side, I adored its simplicity and the nostalgia that it gave me. Of course, it's not perfect, but I genuinely think it's one of the best anime I've ever watched, especially within its genre. The writing is so amazing and it made me feel so many different emotions. Although it's more of a rom-com, there were definitely moments where I teared up and my heart was hurting for the characters, especially Nanami. However, the show also made me squeal and laugh plenty! I watched the ... show in the Dub and Sub and it's safe to say that it's equally hilarious in both.

As a main character, I really loved how the writers portrayed Nanami. Sometimes in shoujo female leads are written really poorly or can get on my nerves. However, Nanami's personality really resonated with me because of her endless ambition and resilience. There were definitely some times where I, much like Tomoe, was like "ain't no way she's doing that," but that stubbornness is what added more depth to her character! It made the times where she successfully pulled off some crazy stunts feel more surprising and fulfilling.

Next I'm gonna talk about Tomoe! Honestly, he reminded me so much of Inuyasha (and the countless of other media with kitsune characters in them lol) but his character still felt very fresh to me and not boring at all. I really enjoyed seeing him slowly soften over time in the series and come to accept his feelings for Nanami. Although he can be just as stubborn as his lady land god, Tomoe is refreshingly sweet at times and genuinely cares for Nanami. He is also so funny and I think he had some of the best lines in the show (or at least I laughed at him the most). Of course, the only thing that frustrated me with him was his hesitation to tell Nanami how he feels (but I also understand that he wanted to protect her).

I also loved all of the other side characters! Mizuki is so silly and his beef with Tomoe is funny. Kurama is lowkey underrated and does so much for Nanami. Mikage is the best matchmaker. Otohiko is iconic. Himemiko is so cute. Also, one thing I do want to commend the writers for is that although they do introduce other guy characters that do take away Nanami's attention from Tomoe at times, none of them really feel like a genuine second male lead (which I kinda loved). I loved the other guys but I also was so happy that they got to be alongside Nanami in different ways in the story rather than being love interests. Of course there are times where there is definitely tension, but pretty much everyone in the story can tell that Nanami loves Tomoe and ends up respecting that. Not to mention, most of the characters know Tomoe loves Nanami too (except for Nanami...) so the flirting from the side characters is usually a means to poke at Tomoe (I'm looking at you Mizuki). Everyone and everything was just so well-written.

Mixed Feelings

I came into this one with very high hopes and expectations. I left feeling happy that it was over.

I honestly expected a lot more from this one. Aside from a chuckle here or there, the jokes fell completely flat. The humor was barely palatable and was for the most part unrefined and obnoxious. Actually, obnoxious is the perfect descriptor for Kamisama Kiss, the first word that springs to mind if asked to describe the series. The romance, if you could even call it that, was contrived and was as tropey as they come. Absolutely nothing in this series felt original.

What can I say nice about ... this series?.. The art was nice I guess, although nothing special for the era. The OST fit the mood pretty well. But seriously, nothing about this show was well written.

Not really sure how this Shoujo has such a higher rating than Snow White with the red hair, or Yona of the dawn.

Story 5/10
Usual episodic style with a spattering of continuance in there which is usually a fine formula. But the problem is that the episodes themselves are quite boring and actually a bit of a trudge sometimes. There are moments where it makes you feel like 'ah, now it's going to get good' and then plummets back to dull.

Art/Animation 4/10
Surprising this animation comes from the 2010's when the style (and humor, but I digress) seems like its from 1999

Characters 4/10
The more you get ... to know Tomoe is probably the only interesting part and saving grace. Before getting his backstory he comes across as the generic 'tough love' style servant, but even as generic he is decently done. The rest of the characters though might as well be pieces of boiled pasta and you're trying to tell them apart.

Overall I'd give it a 4. In my personal list I gave it a 6 just because of those 'moments' I mentioned where I felt like this could be more, but as a review I think 4 is plenty as the anime itself is very boring. Especially as a love story because to be quite honest, this is pretty bad and really makes me wonder why on earth this is so highly rated. As though people rated it after the emotional payoff and not on the seasons as wholes.
