Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo

In a futuristic world, the Maruhage Empire is a militant organization out to steal everyone's hair, and thus their freedom. But a brave man with an afro of gold and nose hairs of steel stands up against their tyranny. Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo, trained in the ways of hair, rescues a teenager named Beauty from the grunts of the Maruhage Empire. Together, they start on a journey to defeat Emperor Tsuru Tsurulina IV. As Bo-bobo meets new friends and battles foes along the way, so too does he begin his quest to save all the hairs of the world!

Light-hearted and comical, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo details a wacky adventure in which Bo-bobo and his companions fight all sorts of villains and deviants within the Maruhage Empire, all the while having a fun and exciting adventure.

This holy bible- I mean anime is something everyone should watch at least once in their life. Every second (and I MEAN EVERY SECOND) something absolutely insane happens. You might start losing your sanity, but that’s completely normal. Also, Bobobo is ridiculously overpowered and is probably the strongest anime character. He can get away with any attack just by goofing off, like a Looney Tunes character who gets blown up one moment and walks it off the next scene like nothing happened.

Anyway, on a serious note: I first watched the sub years ago and later tried the dub. And let me tell you: the dub ... is even funnier than the sub! (That’s not to say I don’t like the sub.) Hear me out: they constantly break the fourth wall, talking about being actors, pointing out when somethings wrong in a scene (like once they’re not moving in a scene or when something's in Japanese), and the narrator is hilarious. They even leave the Japanese text on-screen, like the producers are like "screw it, this show is crazy anyway!"

At one scene, when they are showing a castle underwater (I think it’s based on some Japanese legend or idk) they literally said:

“Who lives in a castle under the sea? Sponge—Boboboooo SquarePatch!”

Another time, when they’re fighting a woman with sleep powers, and there’s a “sleep meter.” She says:

“When the sleep meter reaches max, you’ll sleep for eternity! …Or until the show gets cancelled whichever comes first.”

(And fun fact: it did got cancelled in Japan because of Karens.)

AAAAND the most classic one: a villain character appeared and the introduction subtitles appears in front of him. Of course it didn't got translated in the English dub, so instead he said this:
"get those Japanese words off of me" <-- search it on Youtube! It's funnier when you see that 8 second clip

Uuugh, there are so many more funny clips I wish I could show you, but I can’t post them in this review. Anyway, it’s a totally insane and hilarious show, so please give it a try! If you don’t like it, at least try the dub!

Mixed Feelings

Featuring the antics of a very hairy man and his equally silly sidekicks in their stand against an evil balding empire, Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is as zany and over-the-top as it gets. There isn't really a story so much as an engine to kick the comedy into overdrive, a ridiculous shonen premise with absolutely no breaks between the gag-filled battles ... most of the time. Bobobo and his gang take on the various factions of the evil Chrome Dome Empire, going from base to base to take on the endless hordes of bad guys along with various allies that come and go to suit the show's ... needs. There are no cute or beautiful girls here, contrary to what the heroine's name would have you believe, but there is plenty of testosterone and animate food like pop rocks and jelly men among other things.

Characters? Just know that Bobobo-bo Bo-bobo is the driving force here; his personality largely amounts to mass random outbursts that belie his manly appearance (sort of), along with a healthy dose of nosehairs, cross-dressing and beating up some of his allies for added comedic effect. Secondary character Don Patch isn't too much different, only he is something of a butt monkey and more prone to over-the-top and violent outbursts. And then we have Jelly Jiggler, a more pitiful jelly man and a big butt monkey who often finds himself being a literal punching bag when he's not joining in on gags. Other characters include the token pink-haired teenage shonen heroine who exists for the sake of having a straight man; and a white-haired, edgy teenage boy who fights with his farts and also exists to give commentary and to perhaps be a parody of more popular Jump heroes. There are other recurring characters like a tiny dough man, a torpedo woman, an ice cream head man and a blonde psychic who literally does nothing, but the main starts of the show are the ones who enforce the comedy that comprise the show. Dozens of villains exist; most are piddly in more ways than one, largely existing as fuel for the comedy as their over-the-top skills are overcome in absurd ways. Some are slightly decent for the sheer memage they can enforce, but we're not here to see great villains, no? There are other animes for that.

Though I ranked this anime a 6, I must confess that I think more highly of it at its best and much more lowly of its worst moments. That "worst" aspect is right at the start for roughly the first 10 episodes, where Bobobo only has the pink hair as his companion for the most of it and he the majority of the onscreen time waffling about in little episodic trifles and boring gags. This I would rank a 4 or even a 3 on its own, it's that boring. It gets a little better after that, and continues to get better and better as the show progresses - of which I would rank a 7 if I could. Episode 43 is where it starts to get good, as the show dumps a rather obnoxious straight man and really gets rapid-fire into its comedy through its non-stop fights, the core aspect of the show that makes it truly enjoyable. There's not a truly dull moment at this point on, always managing to throw in something new to keep things fresh right until the very end.

Bobobo is a niche anime to watch purely as a comedy and nothing else. Seventy six episodes is indeed long, but the sheer randomness and lack of consistency among character depth and immersion mean that you don't have to know what's going on to to enjoy yourself and keep going from that point. Personally, I would suggest to skip the first half of the entire anime (or at least the first 10-25 episodes) if you're coming in to see the show at its best, though the first episode is perhaps somewhat obligatory as a slight - introduction - of sorts.

Preliminary (20/76 eps)

TL;DR Version: This anime is SHIT! It's just random for the sake of being random, not for laughs.

Semi-long Version:
First of all, don't listen to the people who say, "if you take so-and-so seriously, you don't understand this show's comedy." They're just trying to justify their pretentious attitude and make you out to look like a fool. For comedy in general, you NEVER take it seriously. You just go in and if the jokes fall under your personal preference, you laugh. If you don't, you don't. THAT is what comedy's about. I don't need to be reminded that the show's a comedy. It's just not MY ... kind of comedy.

Now that that's out of the way, in my opinion, this is one of the worst anime I've ever seen. It has a poor attempt to showcase Japan's bread-and-butter of comedy, Manzai. Manzai doesn't have to have a main plot or buildup to be funny. It can be just as random as the show has tried to do when it was airing. The only problem is that to me, the execution and timing is REALLY off and it just comes in waves that misses more than it hits.

What I've noticed is that when a joke or gag comes up, it's very "in your face" and it has this same feeling as when a waiter comes up and asks if you need anything right when you have food in your mouth. That's exactly how I felt every episode. It's just awkwardly placed and I get irritated more than I smile and that's never a good sign for a comedy show. The high points of the show caused me to chuckle and that's only a FEW times for a full show of 76 episodes. SEVENTY SIX!!! That is PATHETIC! I full on laughed about several hundred times more when I watch Daily Life of High School Boys and it only has 12 episodes total and is just as random! There is no excuse for it to fail like it did the entire run.

The main plot about a guy with hair based fighting style to defeat an evil empire of bald people is ripe with material, but this was a failed opportunity. It's like they're trying to be original by throwing out every possible jokes they could come up with before another anime could attempt it. I'm not saying that I could write better jokes, but this doesn't deserve anything above a 7. Hell, even a rating of 4 is too generous in my opinion.

If you like Bobobo's style of comedy, more power to you because it has 76 episodes of YOUR kind of comedy. I'll just stick to something better.

(Reposted due to the fact that I apparently didn't watch enough of this crap to be allowed to post a review, even though EVERY EPISODE utilizes the same shitty format. That's right, I jumped a few episodes since it's so random that it doesn't matter if I watch it chronologically and I still get that bad taste in my mouth.)
