Mieruko-chan

Miko Yotsuya's eyes water as she fixates on a single spot on her phone—she ignores yet another dreadful, horrific monster that is in her face, uttering the disturbing words: "Can you see me?" Before now, Miko enjoyed her unassuming high school days, with late-night horror shows serving only as a form of entertainment. But ever since one fateful day, she is the only person aware of the invisible monsters walking freely among humans.

Courageously, Miko makes a bold decision: she will never, under any condition, acknowledge the presence of the horrid specters. However, even though she pretends they do not exist, she can still see how they disturb the people around her, especially her best friend, the energetic and lovely Hana Yurikawa. In order to protect them from the monsters' annoyances, Miko gives it her best to continue her school life and avoid every troublesome crisis—even when they scare her to tears.

This anime was so good, the whole plot with the cats totally surprised me and that scene at the end of the last episode.
It was like, damn, now I have to read the manga! I was thinking about it anyways but still. I can't wait to see if that gets expanded on.
The ghosts were really interesting, I like how it leaves a lot to the imagination but I'm also really curious about why the ghosts work the way they do. Like the axe ghost, what the heck was he doing? Was he even a ghost?

I'll be running to the manga so fast. ... It's been a few years since this came out but maybe we'll get a second season some day. I'll keep my fingers crossed for it.

EDIT: I started reading the manga because I was dying to find out what happened next. I started it from the beginning and read through the stuff I'd already watched. It's a really good adaptation. I've said it before and I'll say it again, anime is one of the few places where you can go read the books and find it so similar you wonder why you're even bothering.

I'm glad I didn't skip though, there was some small things here and there that the anime cut, nothing big, just small little scenes that wouldn't be missed but were still fun to see... but then it happened. I finally got to where the anime left off and now I'm kind of disappointed in the anime. I still think it was really good and I enjoyed it, but the shrine stuff, it was all set up. If they'd had two or maybe three more episodes they could have wrapped the whole thing up with a neat little bow but it ends with a cliff hanger.

I've looked into it and apparently, there's a season two in the works, which is great, but I wonder how that's gonna go. Is season two going to start with a big climax that should have happened in season one or are they gonna drag the shrine stuff out over the course of season 2 and have that be the whole plot?

I know twelve episodes is typical, sometimes they have a thirteenth episodes. But that really hurts the show here.

Mixed Feelings

"Mieruko-chan? More like, MIDruko-chan"

There's a certain scene in episode 9 where a character eats yakisoba bread with chocolate chips, then complains that it doesn't work, as the different flavors overpower each other. Mieruko-chan is that bread.
The anime tries to mix horror, ecchi, comedy, slice-of-life, a bit of action, a bit of drama and heartfelt moments. Some of them work well on their own... but their flavors overpower one another. So, in the end, Mieruko-chan never reaches the full potential of them.

Outside of a few jumpscares, it isn't really that good of horror, likely because of the worse art quality from the anime when compared to ... the manga: That level of detail and artstyle contrast is needed for that, and you can't do that on most anime. Granted, when the anime did break an artstyle norm was by giving some of the creatures a generic effect green breath, which doesn't work well with their general black theme.
Passione is a studio known for it's ecchi anime, but the ecchi scenes here are just... whatever?
The actions scenes, though rare, are fine, you can see that they saved stuff for them.

Mieruko-chan's main gimmick gets tiring REALLY fast: At some point you just can't care anymore for variations of Miko trying not not to react to the apparitions, in large part because the story never convinces us to fear them: Quite the opposite, we are repeatedly shown that they can't affect people outside of... breaking beads, making you feel a bit down or hungry (Also giving you nightmares in Miko's case).
Normally I would've dropped something like this really fast, but... a certain scene at the end of episode 2 made me keep thinking about it. I won't spoil it, but it's a scene that shows that the story could use it's "Miko sees spirits" mechanic outside of just it's main gimmick. Such scenes throughout the anime are it's saving grace, and it could be recommended by them alone, as well as having a solid last arc I felt it really built well throughout the series.

Granted: Yakisoba bread with chocolate chips.

You liked the aspect of Miko trying to live a normal life despite seeing and feelings things other's can't? You might enjoy Saya no Uta
You liked the action scenes against such creatures? You might enjoy Jujutsu Kaisen or Mob Psycho 100
Liked the heartfelt moments with such mechanic? Might like Shigofumi or Shinigami no Ballad
Liked the idea of her still trying to live a normal life and having friendships despite all that? Might enjoy Alien 9

as a spiritist, upon watching the trailer, i believed that this anime would explain mediumship well and even help people who also see spirits. but apparently...

(and unfortunately)

the fan service spoke louder, which is pretty ridiculous and disrespectful to the religion.

(trying not to mention that the protagonist and the supporting characters are minors).

simply pathetic!

... on the other hand, the plot twists are a strong point – maybe the only truly positive thing that saves the anime.

if the reviews are considered by the studio, then here’s a suggestion to save the anime: focus more on plot twists and backstories!

or just don’t make a second season.
