About tehnominator
So what about me?
I am left-handed and short, so that should explain everything. I spend time on MAL mostly to keep in check what I've seen or what I am watching, but I also enjoy writing reviews for mostly obscure anime and manga. I give my love to the unloved. Normally, I would go by "The Denominator", which is my pen name ("tehnominator" is my idea of portmanteau). Lately it seems that I've been dubbed the nicknames "Tehno" and "Nomi" based off my current user name; I don't mind being called those, since typing "tehnominator" might be a bit tedious. If you want to know who is the character in my profile pic or forum avatar, it's this charming young lady right here: If you need help with absolutely anything anime, manga or MAL related or just anything at all, feel free to ask as I'm always glad to be of help to people. Btw, anything you see under spoiler tags on my profile--they're not spoilers for anything. I get very lengthy and wordy, thus needed to not have people scroll for ten minutes before they could get to my comments section. So it's safe to click any of the spoiler tags you see here. As per 4chan and the rest of the Internet: It has come to my attention that trolls are using my name/pretending to be me on /a/, so just to get this out of the way--I am not Anon. I don't use a tripcode. I don't post on 4chan. Peruse, yes. Post? No. As I said before, it's bad enough I go for boat rides in the internet sewers, but I haven't got to the level of sticking my hand in the sludge just yet. So if you see my name being used outside of MAL (4chan or anywhere else), it's not me. If you see any links to this profile or any of my lists/blogs/reviews, it is not me. I don't use this username for anything other than my MAL and a Photobucket account. No! Let's get this out of the way... Even Jesus don't wanna be your friend. I do not accept random friend requests. Talk* to me first. I don't mind getting to know new people, but I gotta know you genuinely have something to say rather than you just want your friend list get longer. This isn't Facebook! *By "talking to me" I don't mean you give me three PMs or comments and then go, "Can I add you now!?" We have to at least have a handful of meaningful conversation or at least some sort of rapport going. Things I am fond of: Just to let you know, I'm not joking by putting Pokemon as one of my favourites. I like Pokemon more than I like most people. The things listed under the "Favourite" sections on the left-hand panel are just that--my favourites. They are not all what I would consider to be the all time best anime/manga/characters/people in existence. MAL asked me to list my favourite ones, and so I did. If you want to know what titles I think are the best anime, you can always check out my ratings; any anime I've given a score of 9 or 10 is what I consider to be great stuff. My 5 Favourite Animation Studios 1. Studio Ghibli 2. Gainax 3. Studio 4°C 4. Manglobe Inc. 5. Kyoto Animation These are production companies whose releases I always try to follow and whose anime I next anticipate. Also, they pretty much have made consistently spectacular anime (for me, anyway). I will watch and read anything, once I think it looks good. How do I determine that? I watch the cover. I'm not even kidding. If I see a cover like this or this, I will be enticed by it. If I see one like this or this, I will run the hell away and as fast as I can. I do not like CLAMP and Type Moon. They have their rare moments, but they are highly overrated. My 10 Favourite Directors 1. Miyazaki Hayao (everything he ever made) 2. Yuasa Masaaki (Kemonozume, Mind Game) 3. Anno Hideaki (Evangelion, Kare Kano)* 4. Kon Satoshi (Paranoia Agent, Perfect Blue, Millennium Actress, Tokyo Godfathers) 5. Kunio Kato (La Maison en Petits Cubes, The Diary of Tortov Roddle) 6. Takahata Isao (Grave of Fireflies, Only Yesterday)** 7. Watanabe Shin'ichiro (Cowboy Bebop, Macross Plus, Samurai Champloo) 8. Shishido Kojiro (Doutei Kawaiya, nakedyouth)*** 9. Shinkai Makoto (Voices of a Distant Star) 10. Yoshiura Yasuhiro (Mizu no Kotoba, Time of Eve) Listed are the anime I truly think are exemplary of their skill. The ones in bold are my personal favourites. Whether they're into sweeping you into another world, blowing your mind with the force of a shotgun to the brain, or giving you breathtaking visuals, unusual camera angles, contemplative close-ups and poignant panoramic views, these directors truly stand above the rest to me as far as delivering their work is concerned. Not to mention, they each have a distinguishing style. *It is extremely difficult to pick which one he did better work on. While Evangelion shocked us and depressed us, Kare Kano managed to be one of the best romance anime ever created simply because of all the deeper aspects of its direction. The random shots of traffic lights, the POV from the sliding doors, the depiction of each character's emotions through the visuals, the focus of the scenes, and several other details. I think romance anime forget that other than giving a story and characters plainly, it's also a piece of art and should be treated as such. **A toss up between Grave of Fireflies and Only Yesterday. They are vastly different anime, but they are masterpieces in their own rights; one being a perfect example of tragedy and the other being a perfect example of a mature slice of life anime. ***Despite nakedyouth being this indie director's best short film, Doutei Kawaiya is the anime I keep going back to watch over and over again because it is a piece you are meant to examine, like a gross science project. All of them are visionaries, and they truly give proper direction to the medium My Favourite Anime OP & ED, INS, "Engrish", Seiyuu Performed and Instrumental Theme Songs OP: 1. "Hikari no Hashi wo koete" - Ogura Kei (Legend of the Galactic Heroes ED) *Honestly, I wanted to add every Samurai Champloo ED theme song, since I love them all: - "Who's Theme" by MINMI - "YOU" by kazami - "FLY [SMALL CIRCLE OF FRIENDS]" by Tsutchie & fat jon - "San Francisco" by Midicronica **Seriously, what is the deal with the Naruto franchise having so many awesome theme songs!? Not only do the EDs rock, but the OPs as well. Some of the themes that really deserve mention: - "Kanashimi wo Yasashisa ni" by little by little - "Seishun Kyosokyoku" by Sambomaster - "YURA YURA" by Hearts Grow - "Parade" by CHABA - "No Rain, No Rainbow" by HOME MADE Kazoku - "Ryuusei" by TiA ***It was hard picking one, but I went with the ED I had first heard. These were big contenders: - "Tactics" by The Yellow Monkey - "Namida wa Shitte iru" by Mayo Suzukaze - "Heart of Sword - Yoake Mae" by T.M. Revolution - "1/3 no Junjou na Kanjou (1/3 pure heart emotion)" by Siam Shade Engrish: 1. "Ride on Shooting Star" - The Pillows (FLCL ED) 2. "Ringo Hiyori" - Rocky Chack (Spice and Wolf ED) 3. "Flower Psychedelic" - Ihata Juri/Shitaya Noriko/Shimizu Kaori (Alien 9 OP) *There are two versions of this song, but I prefer the one performed primarily by Toyosaki Aki. **I heard it and liked it before the hype. It'd be nice to see otaku stop dancing to this song now. I also do not care for Hirano Aya's voice very much, since she's a hit or miss sort of actress, but this song was a hit, in many, many ways. Instrumental: 1. "R.O.D" - Y K Z (R.O.D the TV OP) 2. "Don't Look Behind" - EDISON (Black Lagoon ED) 3. "R.O.D Theme" - Iwasaki Taku (Read or Die OP) 4. "Shutter Speed" - Mitsumune Shinkichi (Speed Grapher OP) 5. "Tank!!" - Kanno Yoko (Cowboy Bebop OP) Honourable (?) Mention: The first Pokemon theme song done in English. That song inspires me to be the very best. Also, the Cutey Honey OP theme song, which has been performed over the decades by various artists. Though Re: Cutie Honey is the best. Perfection! Mushi-Shi, My Neighbour Totoro and Yokohama Kaidashi Kikou. Three things I've never had any sort of problem with in any aspect. Perfect 10s in terms of art, characters, story--everything. ![]() May not be your cup of tea, but it's my tea party. --- History etc. etc. I love anime. Zzz... So about this long-time affair: I've been watching since before I could write properly (though that doesn't hold water--my handwriting still looks awful TwT). My parents started me off back when I was maybe three or four years old, with My Neighbour Totoro. From there, I watched whatever anime I saw on television or rented. Pokemon was the first anime series I really followed and it was favourite of mine from when it first aired to... now. Huh, that's more than ten years of Pokemon I've seen. Anime had been sort of a "oh, okay" sort of thing for me until I was fourteen (granted, I had been into whatever was the popular shounen or shoujo anime of the day). During a fateful night of late night TV viewing that I came across a random episode of R.O.D the TV. It was almost... electric, what happened. It was so different, so unique, so unlike any other anime I had seen before. I think I had fallen in love with it. I started watching anime as an actual hobby when I was sixteen going on seventeen (I want to make a Sound of Music joke here, but I'll not) after I saw Samurai Champloo. Up till today, the purest, most perfect masterpiece of an anime that I've seen is Mushi-Shi. I will most definitely drop an anime immediately if the first episode fails to impress me. I've been trying not to drop anime series, even if they're terrible. I have a high number of Dropped series because there are anime out there go on for far too long or they're utter bollocks... I don't read a lot of manga. Only if and when the series isn't animated as yet or the manga version is vastly superior, I will read it. Random. I prefer typing "OAV" than "OVA". OVA = original video animation OAV = original animated video It means the same thing, so it's not a continuous typo, it's deliberate. I like the visual aesthetic of the vowels "o" and "a" being closer without the consonant in between, which explains why I don't like they way "OVA" looks. I have weird dislikes. Speaking of likes and dislikes... Anime That Make Torture Seem More Merciful ![]() The anime I listed above I think are purely terrible and watching them made my insides hurt. They aren't the worst anime, but I hated them more than things I gave ratings of 1. Some of these titles just made me angrier since there were elements that could have saved them from being total shit, such as a few outstanding (I use the word rather loosely) characters. For example, Inner Moka had too much potential* to be stuck in a crappy anime like Rosario + Vampire, and neither Shizuru nor Natsuki** deserved condemnation to Mai-Otome. And I liked Kinomoto Sakura and Syaoran Li*** of Cardcaptor Sakura; their personalities have been bleached in the crap pile Tsubasa franchise so that CLAMP can make more money and cause fangirls to wank all over their latest "masterpiece". *When I speak of her "potential", I am only referring to her hotness and fighting skills. Plus, she seems to be the only person in that series to be aware that the lump of meat in her head is a called brain. She sometimes neglects using it, but at least she knows it exists. **They were also one of the very few reasons to stick around for the not-as-crappy though still very crappy Mai-HiME. With their roles in Mai-Otome being extra-secondary (the protagonists were three of the most annoying/angsty/atrocious little girls I've ever seen), that was pretty much the final straw in making this anime unwatchable. ***These two were cute, had personalities and were easy to like in Cardcaptor Sakura. What we have in Tsubasa are annoyances that can speak with words. Sakura is a stupid, helpless princess and Syaoran is the dumbly loyal, irritatingly righteous "saviour". Thanks for bastardising your own characters, CLAMP; I thought only fanfiction was capable of doing that. Characters I Wish Death Upon (Or At Least A Heavy Concussion) ![]() These are some anime characters I can't stand. Now, some may not necessarily be bad (as you can see, there are some good characters on the list), but just the thought of them makes me get constipated and gets the blood boiling. For the record, the characters in the left column are pretty much crap-bucket characters with personalities you'd find after digging around in a filled latrine with a spatula. Tate being my most hated anime character ever (Tate is a harem anime reject. He's too angsty, too much of a loser wang and he's a shallow, obnoxious character). The ones in the right column just annoy me immensely or I dislike them for some reason or the other (except Near; I abhor his existence) but I generally think they are acceptable, good or even great characters. I wanted to add the entire cast of School Days to this list. Never have I watched an anime where EVERY character is utterly deplorable. Normally I never pay attention to girls in harem anime since I figure, like hating on retarded monkeys, it'd just be cruel. But watching every single girl in School Days was like watching walking excrement on fire, smearing their burning filth all over my computer screen. Needless to say, Itou Makoto was the rotting piece de resistance in that dirty poo cake of an anime. It was a hard decision, but I decided if anyone merited the most hate out of all the girls, it would be Sekai, for not only creating problems, but for making them worse. Seeing them just makes me think that there are easier ways to cause myself pain, like nailing my foot to the floor or drinking expired milk while eating day-old Chinese food. However, it's not all about what makes me mad, there are lots of characters who make me very, very happy in anime and manga. Anime and Manga Genres I enjoy: Dementia, drama, josei, psychological, romance, samurai, sci fi, seinen, slice of life, sports*, supernatural, and yuri. I am ambivalent to: Action, fantasy, mecha, and yaoi.** I would rather not watch: Ecchi and harem.*** *BASEBALL. I love baseball anime with all my love. Other sports anime, not so much. **The best yaoi I've ever seen also happens to one of the best ONAs and animated short films ever made: Shishido Kojiro's nakedyouth. ***I should really say, "I'd rather not watch anything that a 14 year old boy would like." since ecchi can be fun, and I can manage harems, once tastefully done (re: Clannad). Reverse harem anime are more appealing to me since those tend to be less offensive and not as nasty. Dubs aren't the Devil These are anime with some of the more outstanding English dubs I've seen. 1. Cowboy Bebop/Samurai Champloo 2. Fruits Basket 3. Hellsing 4. Pokemon 5. Cromartie High School Explanation for choices: 1. Yup, it's a tie. I can't put either anime in second place because they are both top notch dubs. As for Bebop: Probably the dub to end all dubs. Well, sort of. It was the English version of this anime that aided in making it such a mega-hit and even the most hardcore of fans will have to agree that Steven Blum* totally gave Spike Speigel all that charming, delinquent, and suave sex appeal. Plus, given the content of the anime, it just flows a lot more naturally in English. Edward's voice in the English as well left some deeper lasting impressions than her Japanese counterpart; I can clearly remember Melissa Fahn's voice even after it being more than four years since I've seen this anime. Beau Billingslea and his deep, rough voice worked so well for Jet. And last but not least, the irreplaceable, lovely veteran Wendee Lee lends her voice to the scrappy, hapless femme fatale Faye. As for Champloo: Steven Blum and Kirk Thornton really gave personality to the characters. Kari Wahlgren totally pulls off energetic and youthful. She also manages to do Fuu's emotional scenes exceptionally well, giving the character a lot of depth. Don't get me wrong, Kawasumi Ayako is a spectacular seiyuu, but Kari Wahlgren certainly could give her a run for her money. Especially since Fuu's voice is probably the one with the most range, edging around girly comic appeal with a spunky attitude and deep emotional maturity (when called for)--those two women had the hardest job to do in the anime voice-wise (come on, all Jin had to do was sound serious and bland and all Mugen had to do was be a loud-mouth loose cannon). The dub actors did something great, since I can clearly remember all their voices. 2. Outstanding performance by Laura Bailey as Tohru. She basically owned the entire show. I liked Hisakawa Aya's version of Yuki, but I also felt that Eric Vale did some awesome work, making Yuki darker and mysterious. But more on Laura Bailey rocking all socks off--she even sang** the theme songs for the OP and ED of the English Fruits Basket. She has such a sweet, gentle voice and she completely encompassed everything about Tohru's personality. I dare even say that she does a finer job than Horie Yui (PLEASE understand I am a huge Horie fangirl, btw) at making Tohru seem less like a putz. Don't get me wrong--both are valid interpretations of the character. While Horie makes Tohru a loveable ditz, Bailey makes her into a loveable goof. There is a difference, people. Tohru is more melancholy and contemplative in the English without losing one ounce of her sweetness or optimism. By far the BEST role done in English I've ever heard in my life, male or female. Bailey just throws at least ten levels of complexity to her character than anyone has ever done in a dub. The only thing stopping this from being the best dub I've ever heard is the less-than-stellar casting of some of the other Sohma clan members. 3. Despite the anime being generally subpar, Crispin Freeman's voice totally kills as Alucard. Again, another performance in English that surpassed the Japanese, since I can't for the life of me remember what Alucard sounded like in Japanese. Freeman has that raspy, deep, scary voice. Katherine Gray does a good job as Seras Victoria. At least she had the decency to give us a British accent to solidify Seras' English origin. 4. Oh screw all of you. You ALL know the exact pitch, loudness and timbre of Veronica Taylor's "Give me back my Pikachu!" Despite the dub's basic destruction of the anime with the banned, edited episodes and the Anglicising of anything Japanese, the Pokemon dub is one of the most recognisable dubs ever released. We have spent the last ten years or so listening to Veronica Taylor and Rachael Lillis playing about five hundred characters each for this series. If that isn't worth applause, shame on you. They worked hard, and not only that, they both have lovely, pleasant voices that are easy on the ears. I'd have gladly listened to them voicing Pokemon characters for the next ten years. 5. Ben Pronsky (who has not been in many roles) made the main character such an oblivious doofus without making him sound like an idiot with his serious, matter-of-factly voice. The irony made it funnier. Illich Guardiola and his Extremely Elaborate Enunciation actually worked so well in this series. Again, this was so much more entertaining in English than it was in Japanese. *Of course, any role Steven Blum takes instantly becomes awesome. The man has such a great voice. He really brings out the sexiness in his characters, which is something Japanese seiyuu rarely do. They are capable of larger emotional ranges, but most cannot pull off sexy. **Laura Bailey also raps. I suggest you take a look at Kodomo no Omocha if you want to see an 11 year old girl own you in a rap battle. I'm not a dub enthusiast, but I'm not Japanese audio-only elitist. I tend to watch anime in dual audio, anyway. These are some of the better dubs I've heard. In some cases, the English VAs did something with the anime that the original seiyuu didn't do for it. I dare say these English versions had a better overall effect. Anyway, those are the anime that didn't make me cringe from the English voice tracks. Seeing as how I am such an audio snob... Seiyuu Love Listed next to their names are the roles that make my ears very, very happy. Female seiyuu: 1. Nabatame Hitomi (Hanazono Shizuma, Itoh Nobue, Sakurai Kanade, Sayaka, Suou Mikoto) 2. Horie Yui* (Honda Tohru, Kisaragi Honey, Kushieda Minori, Nishida Haruka, Sawachiki Eri) 3. Toyoguchi Megumi (Revy, Satou Sei, Sakurakouji Yao, Winry Rockbell) 4. Inoue Marina** (Lirio, Yoko Littner, Minami Kana, Mogami Kyoko, Senou Natsuru) 5. Chiba Saeko (Itoh Chika, Kuga Natsuki, Fujisaki Nadeshiko/Nagihiko, Sakamoto Mio) 6. Sawashiro Miyuki (Canaan, Perrine-H. Clostermann, Kurenai Shinkurou, Senkouji Hagino) 7. Itou Kanae (Akeno Mihoshi, Hinamori Amu, Suzukawa Koume, Saten Ruiko) 8. Orikasa Fumiko (Kageyama Torako, Kuchiki Rukia, Matsuoka Miu, Seras Victoria) 9. Satsuki Yukino (Shihouin Yoruichi, Sonozaku Mion, Sumiregawa Nenene) 10. Kawakami Tomoko (Kamio Misuzu, Soi Fon, Kurata Sayuri, Tenjou Utena) 11. Sanpei Yuko (Nakiami, Yasaka Hajime) 12. Kobayashi Yuu (Lala Gonzalez, Sakurazaki Setsuna, Shidou Mariya, Kaziki Yumi) 13. Minagawa Junko (Aoyagi Ritsuka, Cornelia Li Britannia, Thoma, Malek Werner) 14. Ogata Megumi (Ikari Shinji, Nuriko, Tenoh Haruka) 15. Noda Junko (Aki Natsuko, Arisawa Tatsuki, Kinjo Nanoha, Reki, Rokujou Miyuki) 16. Mitsuishi Kotono (Mireille Bouquet, Katsuragi Misato, Katerose von Kreutzer) 17. Kuwashima Houko (Amasawa Yuuko, Yumura Kirika, Sakagami Tomoyo, Soi Fon***) 18. Kobayashi Sanae (Lucy, Allen Walker, Ogin, Madlax, Okuzaki Akira) 19. Kawasumi Ayako (Amami Kurau, Himemiya Chikane, Kaon, Leina, Kasumi Fuu) 20. Goto Yuko (Anya Alstreim, Asahina Mikuru, Goto Yuko) *Hocchan has amazing range. The characters I've selected are exemplary roles; one from each "type" of voice Horie uses (cute, ditsy, exuberant, the newly developed "pervtastic", and refined). Not to mention she sings really well. I guess I AM a fangirl, since this is like the millionth her name has popped up on my profile. She's also a catchphrase-making genius too: "Uguu~", "Yahho!!" and "Hauauau" being some of my favourites. **Another seiyuu with impressive range. Lirio was adorable though not much of a talker. Yoko is the sexiest thing... ever. And her voice suits her. Kana's voice gave off energetic idiot vibes. But Inoue's role as Kyoko is simply one of the most outstanding I've ever heard. The woman jumps from sweet to savage in about a nano-second. She had magnificent control of her voice, delivered her dialogue with absolute perfection, and did amazing work with even the most gruelling scenes as well. She created Kyoko, honestly. ***Soi Fon was originally voiced by Kawakami Tomoko. Nabatame Hitomi is my seiyuu goddess. She does comic, sarcastic, deadpan, exasperated, sexy, energetic, angry, sad, rough, refined--every emotion under the sun, really. She can't really sing (if you ask me), but her acting voice makes up entirely for that. Plus, she is one of the only seiyuu whose voices I instantaneously recognise once I hear it. There have been several occasions where I went into an anime and heard a character speak, only to think to myself, "Omg. It's Naba." I haven't been wrong in my realisations to date :P The only other seiyuu I can do that for is Noto Mamiko. (I can also pick out English VAs Monica Rial, Rachael Lillis and Veronica Taylor's voices in a heartbeat as well.) As you can see, I tend to prefer seiyuu with lots of range and who have deeper voices. High-pitched and "cute" do not necessarily float my boat. Not saying that I am immune to cute, I'm not, but I'll take a rough, playful or husky-voiced seiyuu with charm or sex appeal any day over someone who sounds like Kawaii Shoujo #3. These aren't even all my favourite female seiyuu. Romi Park and Mizuki Nana were fierce competitors for example. And Hisakawa Aya should be there as well. I mean come on, other than her Bee Train hat trick (Noir, MADLAX, and El Cazador de la Bruja), she is an amazing veteran. And yes, Noto Mamiko and her one voice would be on there too, but only because she is so recognisable that I often play "It's Noto Mamiko!" whenever I watch a new series whose voice cast I didn't research. It just doesn't feel like anime when she's not in it. There are also so many awesome standout and defining roles that some seiyuu have, even the popular ones. Like Nakahara Mai's portrayal of Furukuwa Nagisa (contested only by her role as Ryuuguu Rena in the Higurashi no Naku Koro ni franchise) and Koorogi Satomi's portrayal of Okazaki Ushio in the Clannad franchise. (What's with Koorogi playing all these sad, heart-breaking little children, btw? She was Nina Tucker from Full Metal Alchemist too.) Then there's Tamura Yukari's amazing role as Furude Rika (also from Higurashi etc. blah). One of my favourite voices belongs to Itoh Miki as Ogasawara Sachiko of the Maria-sama ga Miteru series. I have high hopes for the K-ON! newbies Toyosaki Aki and Hikasa Yoko, both of whom I wish do more work in the future. There have been a lot of new seiyuu lately. Hayami Saori who plays Morimi Saki from Eden of the East and Omigawa Chiaki (Maka Albarn of Soul Eater) for example are newcomers who I hope get more roles. Male seiyuu: 1. Sakurai Takahiro (Azuma Yuuhei, Fakir, Kururugi Suzaku, Kusuriuri, Ray Lundgren) 2. Nakamura Yuichi* (Okazaki Tomoya, Tsukiyomi Ikuto) 3. Kishio Daisuke (Kuran Kaname, Senda Keiichirou, Souichi Negishi) 4. Kamiya Hiroshi** (Araragi Koyomi, Itoshiki Nozomu, Takemoto Yuuta) 5. Wakamoto Norio (Charles zi Britannia, Chiyo's Dad, Onsokumaru, Oskar von Reuenthal) 6. Hagiwara Masato (Akagi Shigeru, Tokuchi Toua) 7. Isobe Tsutomu (Dutch, Heinrich Runge, Hiromichi Kojima) 8. Miyano Mamoru (L.A., Kiryuu Zero, Suoh Tamaki, Yagami Light) 9. Ueda Yuuji (Hakim Atawari, Morita Shinobu, Souichi Negishi) 10. Sugita Tomokazu*** (Kyon) *Yeah, I only really know his voice from two roles, but he rocked/rocks them hard. Tomoya's voice was just utterly amazing. Nakamura practically made Tomoya into the beloved character he is, giving him life. His voice can pull off humour, sorrow, anger, boredom--you name the emotion, he most likely did it in Clannad (a.k.a. the "Let's try to kill Okazaki Tomoya's spirit by making his life miserable!" anime). He does some heavy work so I have to applaud this guy. And his voice as Ikuto is all mysterious and sexy. He's pulls off the right voice that would get any girl swooning. Plus points! **Wow. He is an amazing comic voice actor and he also does emotional and blasé roles extremely well. He gave Yuuta a heart and a soul. His voice is the one I associate inner monologues with, as you can really feel connected with it. One of the few roles done whose voice just struck me deeply. Plus, he is always in DESPAIR. ***It makes no sense adding any other role of his. All his roles are for dry, sarcastic, deadpan characters. Kyon just happens to be this man's opus magnum. I don't know why, but it was extremely difficult coming up with this list. I suppose because male seiyuu don't have to do as much as their female counterparts, as female characters tend to go through a spectrum of emotion and voice alterations while the guys mostly have to grunt, shout, say long technical things or make crude noises. Wow. Anyway, the guys I picked do some great work, though curiously, I'd be able to come up with a list of favourite male English voice actors much faster and much longer than this one. Made my ears urinate blood: The absolute worst voices I ever heard and can remember. I swear, I felt my lower intestine knot inside me after listening to these. Midorikawa Hikaru as Munakata Mira (Papa to Kiss in the Dark) --> AGH, OW. And this guy had to make sex noises too!! He sounded like someone who just had deviated septum surgery choking on nails while having to battle off a cold and a snotty nose. This voice = torture. Sakakibara Yui as Kajiura Hisako (Otome wa Boku ni Koishiteru) --> Although, it's hard to decide whose voice hurt the worst in this anime. Normally anime usually has one or two characters who make me want to stab myself repeatedly in the ear, but Otoboku outdid itself and had at least four of them who made me want to burst into tears from their voices. I guess that's the price one has to pay. Horie Yui was in it, so probably to balance her excellence with supporting suck, they needed several bad seiyuu to weigh her great work down. The curious thing, though, is that with the exception of Sakakibara and Takahashi Chiaki, all the seiyuu in Otoboku are generally good. So now I just think they all conspired to do awful jobs since they took one look at the script and said, "Screw it, I'm not even gonna try." Kichiya Atsuko as Yoshida Chizuru (Strange Love) --> Delivered her lines sounding like a porn star learning to read. Which probably is the truth, since this person never did any voice acting roles after that, and the character she played was a sex-hungry bisexual with no morals. This is not a hentai, btw. As for the current top favourite seiyuu on MAL's list... Hirano Aya and Fukuyama Jun? I think they are highly overrated. Hirano only works really well in certain roles. Namely two roles (and they are practically the same character): Suzumiya Haruhi and Izumi Konata. She manages to do irritatingly energetic really, really well. I will give her credit for giving Haruhi that refreshing, vibrant personality of hers. And she makes Konata sound like a know-it-all, confident, blase uber-geek (though I dunno anyone who sounds like that). The point is, Konata has an unmistakable voice. Not even some of the greatest seiyuu have ever created a voice so distinct for their character. But that's it. Her voice is grating and painful otherwise. But goodness, Fukuyama Jun's voice for Lelouch (Code Geass) was one of the most over-the-top things I ever heard. I burst out laughing on several occasions during that series because of his voice (actually, during R1 he was fine voice-wise, but it seems hot air went to both Lelouch's and Fukuyama's heads since his voice became absolutely silly in R2). He sounds like a bloated hippo half the time. The other half sounds like he's trying to shout into the mike while choking on a meat bun. It's such a coincidence that the one time his voice actually worked was when he played a pompous, self-absorbed, flamboyant character (Yayoi from Loveless). Honourable mention!? Ohtani Ikue as Pikachu. Everyone in the world (anime and non-anime fans alike) knows this woman's voice. Even if you don't want to, you know it. One last thing: Osaka-ben is fun as hell and Kyoto-ben is sexy. Any seiyuu who pulls off the Kansai dialect wins in my book. --- Club things. You know. Just some stuff from clubs. Yeah. You can find me here, if anything, most of the time: --- Other MAL stuff: My much younger siblings are also on MAL. There's my nine-year-old brother and my six-year-old sister. Watching anime is one of the few related hobbies we share, since there's a vast age difference between us. You know the saying "A family that watches anime together... " Well, I don't know the rest. --- Mostly non-MAL related junk. Writer...? Not really. I wrote yuri fanfiction back when I was young(er) and stupid(er)*. I kept a LiveJournal that has splurges about my daily life and mostly my ramblings on anime. *It is debatable whether I have grown smarter or simply less stupid. More about me, I guess?
