Personal Rating System

In an attempt to arrive at a fair and balanced rating system, I created my own personal system below. The only reason why I placed this on my profile is so that I can always have access to this "cheat sheet" whenever I wanted to give a score to an anime series I just recently finished. It is not my goal to impose this rating system on anyone, but if you've always felt unsure about what score to give, it could be a useful guideline. Just don't assume that everyone rates every anime series according to these rules.

10. ‘Masterpiece’
An anime worthy of critical acclaim that leaves a lasting impression and legacy to its genre. With each viewing you discover something new or see something in a different light, and/or the key moments remains to thrill you even though you know them by heart, mind, and soul. If there's anything that is not perfect, it is greatly compensated for by something else that is stunningly brilliant or gripping.

9. ‘Great’
A notable anime that showcases a variety of enjoyment and entertainment in its runtime. It has some flaws, but are negligible enough to take no notice of. Still, it remains significant to be a hallmark of its respective genre.

8. ‘Very good’
A remarkable anime that you could watch again several times without getting tired of it. A lot of things align well yet there may be a couple of elements that could have been handled more cleverly or precisely, but the rest is super solid enough to almost forget those.

7. ‘Good’
A well executed anime containing several praiseworthy aspects and moments that shines throughout its duration despite some visible shortcomings. Nevertheless it is an anime that is still appreciable and should not be underestimated.

6. ‘Fine’
It has some enjoyable features that lifts it above mediocrity, but it either never truly becomes great, or if it does, it has some parts that drag it down. Several details of the anime are still noticeably well-conceived, but it struggles to leave a mark on its respective genre.

5. ‘Average’
The threshold for ‘OK’. It's not good, it's not bad, just acceptable. You can always rewatch it if you have the time, but you would never consider doing more effort than clicking ‘next episode’ to watch it again. It is just so forgettable that each time someone mentions the title, you need to read the plot or look at some videos to remember what it was about.

4. ‘Bad’
It's ‘almost there’, it is just far from being alright. Either it has some good parts that are ruined by bad parts, or it stays at a constant level of “it had promise, but the good part never came.” You would never want to watch it again and consider forgetting about it.

3. ‘Very Bad’
Miserably poor, but you agree that watching it was an okay pastime on a lazy weekend evening because there was nothing else on your ‘Plan to Watch list’ and you were too lazy to dig up anything better. Or, you felt the need to expose yourself to something crappy to recalibrate your appreciation for the genre. You could have better spent your time, though. You will definitely avoid watching it again, even on the next lazy weekend evening.

2. ‘Horrible’
Horrendous, but has at least one thing that is done well, like one decent scare in an otherwise pathetic horror anime, one good laugh in an otherwise decidedly unfunny comedy, one clever plot element, etc. You would never ever want to watch it again except maybe for that single good part.

1. ‘Appalling’
Everything about it is just grim to such a degree that it doesn't even become great in its badness. It is riddled with many plot inconsistencies, anticlimactic storylines, squandered character developments, and an absurd writing. You really wish you had done something more worthwhile during the anime series' running time.

‘Unrated’
Anime series that were dropped are left out unrated as I won't be able to give out a proper score to an anime that I haven't finished watching. Some Movies, OVAs, ONAs, and Anime Specials are also left unrated.

Of course this rating system is not entirely strict. An anime that perfectly matches one of these descriptions could still get a +1 added to its score if it has something that lifts it higher, like being the first series to introduce a really original plot element, or bringing an important message in an unobtrusive way. Or, it could have its score subtracted if it has something that really offends you even though the rest of the anime is really great.

You should however never completely pan an anime just because of a single negative point. You should also not increase or decrease your score to balance out other reviewers, that's not how a rating scheme is supposed to work. You should especially not subtract points because for instance an 80s sci-fi anime shows an outdated predictions of the future. If you don't understand why, you should stick to watching the more recent series that fit within your small present-day universe.
