Synopsis

Set in an imaginary world, the Earth Land, there exists a Mage Guild called "Fairy Tail." Fairy Tail is stationed in the town Magnolia, residing in the Kingdom of Fiore, and is currently governed by Makarov, Guild's master.

Lucy Heartfilia, a 17-year old girl, wishes to become a full-fledged mage and join one of the most prestigious Mage Guilds in the world, Fairy Tail.

One day, out of pure coincidence, she meets Natsu Dragneel, a boy who is transportation-sick, but very cheerful in nature. However, the thing she does not know is that Natsu is the closest connection to Fairy Tail, as he is a Mage in Fairy Tail.

Background

In 2009, Fairy Tail won the 33rd Kodansha Manga Award in shounen manga category, the Japan Expo Awards for the same category, and the Society for the Promotion of Japanese Animation's Industry Award for best comedy manga.

The series was initially published in English by Del Rey Comics, releasing volume 1 on March 25, 2008 up until volume 12 on September 28, 2010. Kodansha Comics USA picked up the license and released volume 13 on May 10, 2011. It has also been published in Spanish by Norma Editorial since October 30, 2008; in Italian by Star Comics since January 3, 2008; and in Brazil by JBC since October 2010.

Fairy Tail has received multiple adaptations including a 175-episode TV series and its ongoing sequel and two animated films. It has also received several manga spin-offs by various authors, a side story novel series, and a magazine to its name, Monthly Fairy Tail, where some of the spin-offs were published.

A replica of One Piece? Seems like it
Worth reading? Yes

Fairy Tail undertakes another fantasy setting. I have always been skeptic of fantasy anime's as most of them is always obscure, and prone to be uninteresting as the story progresses. But that mistake isnt repeated here in Fairy Tail as Hiro Mashima performs excellent on making his own fantasy world out of thin air.

In this manga, all sorts of mages roam about the world. Some of them even bond together and form a guild that takes requests from people in exchange for money, there are even such guilds that are "dark", who are not among the read more

Intriguing plot. Unique and original world. Well developed characters. Amazingly epic and suspensful battles.

Fairy Tail is none of these. When I was first introduced to this manga, it sounded like it knew where it was going. It seemed to have a plot, interesting secrets and mysteries. So far the biggest mystery to me is how Natsu isn't the Guildmaster of Fairy Tail as well as the strongest of the Ten Wizard Saints. As I sat reading chapter after chapter, I watched how characters 10 times stronger than Natsu were defeated by apparently overpowered foes, only for Natsu to stand up, eat some random flame, read more

I first started Fairy Tail because all my friends were like: "You love One Piece, you'll LOVE this!" I thought it would be a rip-off of my favorite series and went into it with very low expectations. However, only a few chapters in, my attitude changed significantly!

This series is reasonably new so the story is only just started, however what there is so far is great! A lot is still open and YET TO HAPPEN and I find myself excited to find out what happens next. The jokes are original and don't get stale and the overall tone of the series read more

It's funny to talk about Fairy Tail, because, what in the middle of the series, became one of the most interesting and enjoyable shonens (even with the monstruous fanservices), it later became one of the most clichéd and exagerated mangas around. And I mean, today, it has embraced, if not all, most of the clichés that exist today...

I believe everyone may be aware of the plot, in general, so, I'll skip to the main points of my review:

Story:

Hiro Mashima knows very well how to estabilish a good plot, with various mysteries for you to wonder, etc. The problem is in the development of it. Most read more

Manga: One Piece
Both have a similar character art style and talk big about friendship or "nakama." And both main leads are general idiots most of the time, both are great.

Manga: Groove Adventure Rave
Both have the same author, and the artwork at the end is almost same as that in Fairy Tail.
Great story with tons of lovable characters!

Manga: Buster Keel!
Both mangas have a guy that can transform into a dragon (Natsu uses dragon slayer magic and Keel is actually a dragon in human form). There is a cute girl who uses other characters to fight (Lucy with her spirits and Ravi with monsters). "Blue" - the name of the water guy in "Buster Keel" is similar to Grey in Fairy Tail. Blue and Keel don't get along, just like how Natsu and Grey argue all the time.
In both mangas, there is also a guild for information and work and levels for each job.
In Buster Keel, the protagonist are all  read more

Manga: Monster Hunter Orage
Both manga's have similar characters which in both manga's do quests to earn money, or just for fun. In Monster Hunter Orage there's more of a goal then in Fairy Tail, which varies from time to time.

Manga: Black Clover
Magic exists as a prominent element in both Fairy Tail and Black Cover. The main characters utilizes this during the story to accomplish a variety of feats. Both series also follows an adventurous tale where there's brewing rivalries, antagonism, and mysterious secrets. In terms of battle style, expect shounen action with magical mechanics.
