So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

Maybe it'll have a bigger 2nd week than v5, since only 4 days of charting this week compared to 7 for v5. That is bad news for the DVD if that's the case... because it'll be unlikely to chart again. Hm... OreImo. v1 did indeed have a significant drop from S1. Hopefully it doesn't drop so much from v2+. Love Live! v4 had issues on Amazon. Firstly in stock on June 23... then June 28, and now June 26. Will probably make it up massively in the following weeks, as i'm not convinced it could only achieve this high with v4 having the Maki/Rin single, and the 2nd part of the Live Concert. Chu2koi! v7 had a decent boost from the OVA exclusive volume. Hopefully it can hit 15k everntually. Kotonoha no Niwa did much worse than its Stalker prediction. I have a feeling the initial release of the BD at the theatres has quelled the potential sales it could've had... but it did okay I guess. |

As expected, there is overestimation by Stalker for OreImo2 v1 (Stalker 21.6k, Actual 17.9). As much as OreImo is considered a bit skewed to storefront in terms of sales pattern, the spell it spent in #1 distorted the estimate quite a bit. The drop for first week's sales from v1 season 1 to v1 season 2 is around 22%, around the expected range. On the other hand, MJP is not bad when it comes to Stalker projection (3.15 vs estimated 3.0). Where the ball is dropped is in Crime Edge. Of course the Stalker estimate of 3.0 is not going to be met but how much is it off? And what explains the inaccuracy? Something to ponder. Ejc said: This prompts me to think: Is it possible that some external factors, like the number of non-anime BD/DVD up in the ranking in the past few months, may have contributed to a general overestimate by Stalker over that period. If that is the case, perhaps we are going to see a general phenomenon of overestimates for this season's anime, except a few titles that are very strong on storefront. Kotonoha no Niwa did much worse than its Stalker prediction. |

School Idol Project vol.4 So... OreImo is 15.3K while Love Live vol 4 is 14.6K eh? One is a good prediction of mine and the latter is a little disappointing result. The second season announcement seems to have little impact on Love Live vol 4 as people have hoped. Still, it will surpass OreImo Blu-ray in the long run due to strong store-front sale. GaruPan has a commanding lead over every other show. |

Really, I thought the stocking was fine? GaruPan v6 was totally fine. Love Live! v4 did have some degree of stock issue. It was barely "in stock" after it was released. It spent more time as "In stock on June xx", which suggests some additional copies would've not been delivered during this time. v4 has been ranking quite strongly all week... It's hard to imagine it had the lowest 1st week by 600 copies when it had all those bonuses that could massively boost it. |

Bunri didn't suck, it just was completely, utterly, totally normal. It wasn't good, it wasn't bad, it was just completely average. This is the worse possible position to be when it comes to sales, even worse than if the show actually sucked. Bad shows attract fans who want to be different, or who come in with such low expectations that the show actually exceeds expectations, or is so bad that it can be amusing to some. Dansai wasn't bad, it just had nothing to attract any attention. I watched 8 episodes and then dropped it, not because I hated it, but rather I had no emotion either way. It was very mildly amusing, very mildly interesting, very mildly entertaining, but it didn't generate any passion one way or the other. I think this feeling applies to most people, and the sale numbers reflect it. |

Hoped for a larger first week for Chuunibyou's final volume, but a 15k+ overall average is great! v7 should get a decent 2nd week that pushes the average even further. With that said, I'm pumped for S2! I'm hoping it airs this fall, though I wouldn't mind if Kyoukai no Kanata aired first. Either way, KyoAni has great shows coming up. |

Antanaru said: I'm really surprised Kotonoha no Niwa sold so badly. It would be fine for a TV series, but not movie. Hopefully it will sell better over time. For what amounts to sort of a non-Otaku oriented prestige film it did pretty great I thought. No doubt Sakuga fans bought it up as did some of Shinkai's fans of which there are many devotees, but other than that it doesn't really seem like the sort of thing that would have mass otaku appeal like Love Live, OreImo and Girls Und Panzer for example. I still don't get Girls Und Panzers massive smash hit popularity, but then I sort of do at the same time when I look at stuff like Infinite Stratos. I know there's a big audience for that sort of thing, I just found the show kind of too low budget to warrant such huge numbers personally even if I thought it was alright and figure it probably did that thing where it was such a huge surprise that it got a lot of extra talk and it bolstered it into smash hit territory. I've seen it happen before, but I've never really seen a follow up series equal those numbers again because expectations then go through the roof where previously there were none. Anyway there's a lot worse things that could sell around those numbers. I can't even imagine how much Namco Bandai's profits are going to go up yet again this year with that Gundam Unicorn, Love Live etc combined and that's just counting anime sales. |

Kaioshin_Sama said: Comparing GirlPan to IS misses quite a lot of the point because you only see the common part, a show with a bunch of girls and some mecha, but here the similarity ends. IS appeals to harem fans and fan-service lovers, GirlPan does not make appeal to those people (in fact GirlPan is famous for strictly enforcing no panty shot rule throughout the anime). Even the mecha are different: One is scifi mecha, one is historical military tanks. So your "big audience for that sort of thing" is two quite different "big audience". I still don't get Girls Und Panzers massive smash hit popularity, but then I sort of do at the same time when I look at stuff like Infinite Stratos. I know there's a big audience for that sort of thing, I just found the show kind of too low budget to warrant such huge numbers personally even if I thought it was alright. There's a lot worse things that could sell around those numbers. GirlPan's success lies mainly in successful blending of three pillars which give rise to the perception of BALANCE (not whether you think it is balanced, but what the customers in Japan think is balanced) 1) A serious treatment of portrayal of tanks, its motion and the battle, and here your "low budget" is quite off the point because from interview I read there was a lot of resource and effort put into the animation of the tanks so that it looks and moves real. This appeals a great deal to military otaku, many of them do not usually watch anime much less buy anime, and these are the people who praise this show for getting even the suspension, braking and the turret movement accurate (the show actually hired advisers to make sure that they got the military part right), as well as the abundant military/tank references scattered around the anime. Few had expected the show would get so serious about the tanks, and the fact it did and also stood the scrutiny of fussy military otaku means that it pulls in a substantial number of new fans to watch (and possibly buy) the anime. The high quality sakuga for each of the big battles kept the interest high for those people (and even those who are not into military hardware). 2) The story that is refreshingly different. It is not a laid-back slice-of-life where tanks are more like background for the girls to have fun with each other and chit chat along (which is what fans were expecting before the show starts). It is also not a gritty military drama that people may associate tanks with. People tuned in to find that it is in fact a sports anime, and tank battle is actually a tournament sport. This is a very innovative idea and the anime sticks firmly to this theme and portrays the girls as the underdog striving to overcome the odds to win, while forming bonds with each other (and with the enemies) in the process. So the old tradition of sports anime, from volleyball to soccer to basketball, about team effort, determination and focus on victory is transformed and re-imagined in this fictional world that keeps a foot in the real world which focuses the fans' attention (the Ooarai town which is the school's home town is a real town, now shot to fame as the place to go for GirlPan tourism). And each week the fans came to see what enemy the girls need to face, what odds they need to overcome, and how the exciting battle is going to be like. These people give high praises to the pacing and structure of the series. 3) Besides the military fans, and the fans of sports anime, there are the usual anime fans who go after the characters, and find their interactions and their interesting personalities moe and entertaining. Granted it is not like this was the case at the beginning. The character design was dismissed by many when it first came out as obsolete and "not moe enough". The passion for the characters actually went hand in hand with the popularity of the show, particularly after the first major battle (fought in Ooarai and featuring a lot of famous scenes including crashing into an actual restaurant by a tank or the eccentrically funny aphorism by Darjeeling). If anything, GirlPan actually proves that what is MOE to the fans can be more than just the character design or how much fan service the characters do, but can also come entirely from how fans like the story and the characters' interactions in it. All in all, I think GirlPan is an anime that looks deceptively simple to do and not special, but in fact was innovative and did many things right. In particular it managed successfully to draw in fans from many areas, be it the military fans, the sports anime lovers or the usual otaku who just love cute girls interacting with each other in funny way, and keep their interest without alienating any group. GirlPan's massive success has much to do with its ability to expand the fan base, while IS is more like drill deep into a particular niche and captures everyone in it. There is a really huge difference here. |

What makes me so happy about the success of this show is that it helps demonstrate that good writing and directing spells success.I just found the show kind of too low budget to warrant such huge numbers GuP deserves its top 20 ranking, actually all the shows in the top 20 deserve to be there. May not be my taste, but they have proven their staying power. |

Nachtwandler_21 said: Actually GirlPan is not that popular in China, judging from the number of viewers for this show in anime sites in China compared to other shows around the same time. And the notion that Japanese are "addicted to tanks" may have missed the point because in report after report I read in Japanese newspapers (there is just one coming out today about GirlPan's positive impact to the sales of DVD produced by the Ground SDF), it gave the background that the public in Japan are so indifferent to SDF and the military that the success of GirlPan and its rippling effect on things from Ooarai tourism to SDF DVDs to the sale of tank plastic models etc etc came as a surprise to everyone involved. On the other hand, quite a lot of tank games, starting from World of Tanks, are made in the west and have mainly western people as the customers, which begs the question of where the notion of western audience not as addicted to tanks as Russians, Chinese, and Japanese came from. Probably western audience just don't have such an addiction to tanks and tank warfare as slavic, chineese and japaneese have. |

So It's not the case. I just remembered the explanation about popularity of World of Tanks MMORPG. It has large audience in slavic countries, German and China and they plan to open a new server in Japan soon but the audience is not big in other Western Europian countries and USA. People expain it by historical reasons. Tanks were inwited in Great Britain but most of WEstern Europe countries and USA don't have a good history wwith their tank military unlike German, Israel or former Soviet republics. Although I dunno how about China. |

^ Are you saying that World of Tanks is more popular and has more paying customers in Germany, Russia, China and Japan than UK, US, France and Italy? That would be something new to me as I always have the impression that Americans form the biggest part of customers when categorized by country. |

It's the fact. Audience on American servers of WoT are much fewer than on Russian and Chineese once. And I say nothing about Japan. Just that Japaneese tank tree and Japaneese server are planned for nearest future. It's quite famous joke in russian community that GuP was made to promote WoT in Japan. It's not true of cause but still. |

WOT US is the smallest server while the Russian server is the largest, EU is mid way between and currently averages around 150-160k users online at prime time. |

Nachtwandler_21 said: Hmm... free... so what is the business model? Where does the fund that is needed for maintenance, hardware hosting and software development comes from? WoT is free to play. And yes I had figures somwhere but it would take some time to search for them. No rush for the data. I am just curious. But if the whole thing is totally free (in many cases of MMORPG the model is usually freemium - which means you start free but you need to pay for stuff inside the game to be able to do more, which means it is not totally free), the consideration is a bit different: I would expect the really addicted fans to be those who are willing to pay hard money and spend time to play games that look real and appealing to them. Free games on the other hand may attract a lot of casual people who just come and go in a flash and not spend much time actually playing the game, so in the case of free game, perhaps total time spent by all users is a better indication of popularity than just the number of users. |
