According to Production BaoBab, seiyu Kawakami Tomoko passed away on June 9th. She was 41 years old. She had been struggling against ovary cancer since 2008.

Director Ikuhara Kunihiko posted on his twitter that he contacted Kawakami on March 14th. She told him that she wanted to play in his new anime Mawaru Penguindrum.

Director Sato Junichi said Kawakami recorded the drama CD of Aria in September 2009. She recorded the voice alone because she was taking anti-cancer drugs and her doctor forbade her to be in crowds. The producers waited for five months until Kawakami's condition got stable. Sato said she was one of the irreplaceable seiyu.

Been crying over the last 1.5 hours or so.

Such a young talent...

Makes even more reason to get the Right Stuf Utena box sets.

Oh shi-
I've watched some of her roles and they're pretty well known and very good.
Damn it. A big loss for anime.
Was it mentioned what was her illness?

Requiescat in Pace.

One of Anime's most versatile seiyuu. I loved everyone of her roles. Most notably Athena, Misuzu, and Utena. She will be truly missed. RIP Kawakami Tomoko.

Awwwh. I have a terrible memory for names, but looking at her roles, she was in at least half a dozen shows I watched. I can actually remember her voice as Athena in Aria. =/

Very sad, she was only 40 ;_; My thoughts are with her family.

She did so much in the industry, so a short overview of her vast talents.
She voiced Soi Fan in Bleach.
The main girl in Air and another girl in Aria... my bro is going to be so depressed tomorrow.
Rosette from Chrno Crusade, amazing performance.
Hikaru from Hikaru no Go, that adds a lot of meaning to that series, I never realized she did this one too.

A great loss.

With Revolitionary Girl Utena being one of my all time favorite series, this is a horrible piece of news.

Very sad day, I will always love her work.
