Osaka Prefecture, the central region of Western Japan, has announced that they will investigate the current situation of books describing sexual expressions of minors (under 18) regardless if they are actual persons or fictitious characters. They specifically mentioned manga magazines for women and boys love (yaoi) manga as potential targets of the regulation.

I've given up on you, Japan. First they go after the lolis and now shouta too. By the time we notice all yaoi will be gone off the shelves.

Finally, Japan get's with the damn program and understands that child pornography is bad. They have only actively been fighting the laws against child pornography for some 20-30 years, this is a step in the right direction.

I'm utterly disgusted by some of the responses in this thread, coming from obvious pedophiles who don't see a problem with child pornography.

You sicken me.

Going by the wording, this includes high-school aged characters as well as shota.

Isn't it (fairly) normal for 16-17 year-olds to have sex? 16 is the age of consent in my country, so it isn't even illegal to have sex at that age.

Also, my responses here apply to this as well. It doesn't matter if it's loli or shota, gay or straight, the same principles apply.

But if I understand this right it doesn't mean that they'll just ban shota. It means that if they think that a character looks under 18 that's pretty much enough for them to ban the manga. And most BL manga are about 16-17 year old characters. God this is stupid.

"BAAAAAW, I can no longer read manga depicting children having sex with adults, fuck you Japan, you're so stupid!"

I don't think you understand something here, sir. They are considering it, they won't actually do it. It's just stupid of Japan to make announcements like this just to please Western societies who are poking their noses into something completely irrelevant for protecting real children.

Wait what!? I all was knew some thing like this will happen.
I never read shotacon ; yaoi; or older adult bl. I only read BL/shounen ai at young age that under 18 or 20.

This good and bad news for me. Sure is good for under age 14 but for 15 to 18?
Not good.
The only thing that pissing me of that only shota/bl and not loli or hentai? Is Japan being sexism and Homophobia( for gay boys) or what? Soon as we now there going to be war going on.

taterhead said:

I was wonder about that. I mean bl should be an age but when come to sex there shouldn't be an sex for under age 14.

I start feel like people hating at young couple shouldn't have sex or love at that age.

Oh dear. This brings up the whole "why not fight real crime" discussion...

I'm not huge on on shota, though I understand the appeal. But for the normal Yaoi... some artists seem to be unable to draw people that properly look their age ^^;

I mean, apart from the disclaimers like "All people in this manga/anime are the legal age"... just the way they draw would get their material banned then?

Also, if they must "clean out" manga, shouldn't the "rape" get the same, if not more, priority?

I think in the end this piece of news is more or less an intention to tell the "West" that they are doing something, just to have them settle down, but I can't imagine the country of tentacle hentai to actually get serious with this. Next thing you know they'll announce a war against figurines for being too sexy :P
I can't take this press release too serious until something happens.

Also, I doubt that this witchhunt would produce any results. That's like blaming videogames for violence all over again... But I digress.

Conjecture is as a stated. I don't read or watch anything pornographic so I wouldn't know what exactly happens in a yaoi manga but I can assure you that stopping high school aged males from engaging in sex wouldn't be cracking down on child pornography. You see, in Japan there are magazines called gravure which depict fairly young girls (an article I read mentioned the youngest age they know as nine) in fairly scanty swimsuits. Though these things are frowned upon by the public, the business is still booming.

Granted, that's not pornography in the whole since, because while they make the girls pose in sexual manners, they aren't all out naked like your average playboy center fold. My point remains though, before you can conclude that they're cracking down on child pornography, you should at the very least wait for them to stop gravure magazines which put young girls in arousing (if you're in to that) situations.

On topic: As I stated earlier, I don't read or watch pornographic material, so this doesn't generally affect me one way or another. As an aspiring writer however, I'm against it. When you go into a certain field of writing you expect full out freedom, no such thing can be found when restraints are slapped onto all creative doors.

well if stuff like this will make title like ikkitousen/gantz (cannot think any yaoi title, sorry) banned, i don't have any reason to support law like this.

and i wander if they will bann stuff like harry potter...

Apparently, they're allowed to have sex, but if you get off watching them, then you're an evil bastard pedophile. o.o Apparently. Protect the children.

Wait a minute, this is only Osaka, right? How much affect does this actually have on the rest of Japan? People will still come out with BL manga, it's just that one area might be monitoring what they have in their area?

(So Osaka Fujoshi will have to hop on the train for half an hour to get their manga...?)

And this is just in consideration, right?

I see this being a huge problem for the Japanese not just business wise but crime wise as well. The Japanese are already stressed out enough from over schooling and over working and the pressure to succeed in life. Taking away yet another thing that keeps them sane is only going to cause more suicides, more crazy killings, and more rapes.

I don't think they'll lose that much business. They're only banning it in Osaka, I'm sure they can still export it to other parts of Japan. Unless I misunderstood this. Besides, they might just get more TENTACLE RAPE HETAI over there. 8/

No, I'm not joking. People in Japan are very uptight. Look up Japanese bulling and you'll see what I mean. Taking away something that people use to vent their daily frustration is only going to cause them to someday snap.

As for business, ya they'd lose a lot. IF it was banned in Osaka then it's exactly as it sounds. Any Yaoi, loli, shota manga company's in Osaka would be forced to pack up and move. If such a law was passed then it would surly be pushed in other parts of Japan as well. Osaka is just a starting point to see how the people react. It's doubtful that anything will be banned though.

I don't like Yaoi or Shota but I feel strongly about freedom of expression and art. As long as it's not using real people, hurting anyone or proven to cause someone else to start hurting people, I'm fine with it. The only reason Japan is even attempting this is to please westerners and their self righteous conquest to rid the world of all things that don't set well with soccer moms.

I really think saying that there will be a increase with rape and other trauma is still going perfectly overboard. Everything else you've presented is fine, and asian culture does tend to be really uptight. The fact is, an increase of rape and murder of something so insignificant is unlikely. No matter how much "stress" it may relieve or w/e

Rape and Murder over the fact that underage art isn't being sold anymore. It's just, unlikely o__O

Yet again this is all conjecture so =P
