I think it is time to go through an overview of the Amazon Stalker estimate for this season's anime since most of the shows are now one third into the series. There is a saying that at lest 3 episodes should be watched before deciding whether the anime is something for you, and by now this point has been past so we should start to have a clearer picture of which works are going for the popularity route and which works are going down in the race. Observations: - If we ignore the very strong franchise of Monogatari, this season is heading for the same destiny of the miserable winter season this year. Projected sales are mediocre or poor and few titles reach near the 10k big-hit line. In the previous season (spring), by this stage there were 15 shows with projected sales above the manabi line - this season we have 10. Last season we had 4 shows with projected sales >10k (and 2 shows within striking distance of it) - this season we have only 2 and no show beneath 10k is near the line. - Monogatari is way ahead of all its rivals. The only question is whether its vol.1 will show any significant drop from the sales of the previous entry of the franchise, Nekomonogatari Kuro. Its projected sales used to be >65k but since it settled into a lower rank (below #10) around 2 weeks ago the projection has softened into high 50k's. - In many ways, Free! is the winner in this season. For a long while after its solicitation, its ranking was under #100 even #200 and the projected sales was barely 6k. This all changed after first the revelation of the packaging and extras details of vol.1 BD/DVD, and then, most importantly, the airing of ep.4. Dollops of male fanservice are one key factor, but a lot had to do with watchers finally deciding that this original anime has a good balance of story, humor, character development and fanservice. It is interesting to see that even the skeptical fans in places like 2ch now talk about how interesting the story is instead of mocking or bashing any perceived "gay theme" or "fujoshi bait". This is all reflected in the shooting up of its vol.1 ranking in Amazon and the projected sales, which more than doubled from 6k to 14k now. - Highschool DxD and Symphogear both started as early favorites to be among the TOP FOUR BESTSELLING titles of the season, according to Stalker. And both have so far performed quite close to each other, though earlier HDxD looked stronger whereas recently it seems Symphogear performed slightly better. Both are a sequel of an earlier series and both benefit from fans affirming that overall quality has stayed consistent in this second season. In fact, the general consensus is that in terms of animation, character appeal and music Symphogear improves substantially in this sequel. That said, attrition and fatigue are facts of life for sequels. A drop of sales from 1st season is a given but it remains to be seen how much drop these two titles will have. - Brothers Conflict benefits a great deal from the disproportionate impact an event ticket brings to disc sales. Before the announcement of the event ticket, its projected sales was less than 3k. It went right above 6k after the announcment and only settled to the current 5.3k over the following weeks. We can expect substantial drop in sales for its subsequent volumes. - Fate Illya and Dangan Ronpa were both tipped as possible candidates to make into the TOP FOUR BESTSELLING titles of this season. They surely accumulated quite a bit of sales in the early period after their solicitation but both have faltered in ranking ever since. Still their ranking have stayed stable recently and both now have projected sales in the 4k-5k range. - 3.8k for KinMosa may not seem particularly impressive but it is enough to put it as the 8th best performing title in this season. Its high production value and consistent humor seems to have secured a good amount of orders. Another slice-of-life anime Tamayura, on the other hand, boasted some very loyal fans and even before the season started people were estimating that it should be able to sell 4k. Interestingly enough although Tamayura started in very high places in Amazon ranking, giving it almost 8k in estimate, it finally settled in a middling rank and indeed the estimate now puts its sales at around 4k. - After Devil and Realist, another female-oriented show benefited from event ticket effect for its vol.1 sales ranking, we have a large number of shows beneath the manabi line. One thing to note is that many of the shows that are above 2k indeed get mainly positive feedback from fans: Uchouten for its stunning art and portrayal of Kyoto as well as an intriguing story; Rokyubu for keeping the quality of 1st season and welcomed introduction of new characters; SerSer for finding good humor from the refreshing setting in a local government while Silve Spoon finds humor from the refreshing setting in an agricultural highschool; Rozen Maiden has settled into fascinating story-telling after a confusing first episode. There are indeed people who complain about lack of theme in Neptunia, the decision to start the story in Tokyo for KimiMachi, and uncertainty of how the series' direction will be in Love Lab (its animation gets a thumb-up though) but none of it seems to be deep feelings widely shared. In all it is hard to think of particular reasons why these titles should not make it above the manabi line. Perhaps the spectacular sales of titles in the spring season are again draining the resource of disc-buying fans. - Even weaker are WataMote and KamiNomi but despite a very imaginative production of WataMote few expected the anime to really sell, and KamiNomi never sells much for its previous 2 seasons. Both seem to pin their hope on boosting the manga sales. - Of all the titles, perhaps Fantasista Dolls and Genei wo kakeru Taiyou are the deepest disappointment. Both are original anime that held hopes of making good success, particularly for Fanta which some even tipped as a possible bestseller candidate based on its character designs and the fame of "Code Geass" Taniguchi. There are fans who hope that more success of original anime can help the industry to be willing to risk similar projects and be less reliant on adaptation works, and those people may be especially let down by the prospect that both are heading for the bottom tier of projected sales, one that is <1k. Fanta suffers from the confusion about its target audience as many think it should aim for an Aikatsu or PreCure demography instead of midnight anime audience; Genei never gets away from comparison with Madoka and fans deem it too grim and uninspiring (its unique character design definitely does not help). - All the titles that fare even worse than the two works above indeed receive more negative feedbacks than those in 2-3k range (with the exception of Genshiken). People are disappointed that C3bu is not portraying the gunfight realstically and not much is taught about airsoft except some abstract mindset or attitude instructions. The LN of KamiNai does not have a strong fanbase to begin with and the adaptation of the first volume (the first 3 episodes) left many people including those who read the LN scratching their heads. Kitakubu receives widespread complaints about the poor voice acting of the mostly rookie cast (and its humor is very much a hit-or-miss affair). Based on the feedbacks I never expect Genshiken to sell this poor but perhaps its subject matter, a university club filled with fujoshi, is never going to be a bestseller for the discs even though the anime seems to be reasonably popular. BD+DVD first week sales estimate according to Amazon Stalker 57.5k Monogatari 2nd 14.1k Free! 6.5k Highschol DxD 2nd 5.6k Symphogear 2nd 5.3k BroCon 4.7k Fate/kaleid Illya 4.4k Dangan Ronpa 3.8k KinMosa 3.8k Tamayura 2nd 3.7k Devil and Realist 2.8k Uchouten Kazoku 2.7k Rokyubu 2nd 2.7k Servant x Service 2.5k Neptunia 2.4k Kimi no iru Machi 2.2k Rozen Maiden 2.2k Love Lab 2.2k Silver Spoon 2.1k Teekyuu 2nd 1.7k KamiNomi 3rd 1.5k WataMote 1.5k Blood Lad 1.2k Senyuu 2nd 0.8k Fantasista Doll 0.7k Genei wo kakeru Taiyou 0.7k Futari wa Milky Holmes 0.7k C3-bu 0.7k InuHasa 0.6k KamiNai 0.5k Kitakubu 0.5-0.7k Genshiken Nidaime *Genshiken only has DVD Box for DVD release. The 0.7k estimate counts the projected DVD Box sales while the 0.5k estimate counts only the BD sales. ??? Gatchaman Crowds (not yet available for preorder, so no prediction is made) |

So MAL finally starts locking news threads that are only a few weeks old? I wonder where was the announcement of this change? Or we are seeing yet another case of changes made that impacted users but not communicated to them? I wonder how long people would put up with this. As much as I have a bunch of information to share about anime announced recently I cannot share it in news board, and the anime series is too disorganized and chaotic to share information except with people already interested in the particular series. |

It was heavily storefront... so it remains to be seen if Symphogear has an equivalent ratio of storefront to Amazon reception as first season, thereby giving it a chance to hit around 8k+ average. I think it can because as you said, the quality of Symphogear seems to be higher than in Season 1. I agree with Highschool DxD. Seems to be performing almost as good as Season 1. Whether the performance at storefront as a good as Season 1, also remains to be seen. Hopefully it can still average around 9k+ in the end. |

So it seems Japan is joined with MAL in disliking my favourite shows of this season (my personal top 4 being Genei, KamiNai, KinMosa and Kitakubu in that order). Then again my opinions of the things I've been watching this season has been a lot less varied than in any other since I started routinely watching airing anime near the start of last year. But I'm preparing myself for an upcoming season of disappointment as far as sales are concerned. |

Watamote doesn't feel like a big hit seller indeed but I certainly expected it to sell at least closer to the Manabi line, same goes for Silver Spoon, I personally don't enjoy the manga so I didn't see the anime but from its manga following alone I was expecting sales at least above the 3k mark. On the other hand kinmosaic is higher than I expected which is a moderately pleasant surprise. Anyway, I might be missing something but there's no mention to Gatchaman Crowds, is it a special case of some sort? |

Battle between Shingeki and Utapri is quite fun to watch. Better than this season's MLB. It will be a challenge for shingeki consumers, mostly the fujoshi buyers, to battle it out until volume 9 while utapri fans will have to relax until volume 7. A shirtless levi or a moe levi scene is needed. Jean needs to strip and show some skin as well. Some blushing innocent Berthold scenes is also a plus for the girls. Historia and Ymir yuri scenes must be well-animated too to get the male crowd buy. And lol at railgunS. What happened. Too bad JCstaff is putting their best with the show. Hoping at least decent sales for that awesome Index movie. |

To be true, even the amazing last part of the Sisters Arc did not shift the ranking of Railgun2 BD much, so I don't think they are that related. Anyway, I still expect to see some numbers when the full list is out later this week and we'll see how much did Railgun actually sell in its second week.symbv said: Hardly surprising after last week's episode signaled the beginning of a filler arc. After watching the latest WataMote episode, I'm even more puzzled that the predicted sales are so weak. The show itself is entertaining, to say the least, and the theme is something many people out there can relate to. Also, the opening's sex. |

You know it's a bad season when the result of the sales really is likely to be the Shaft and Kyoani shows going #1 and #2 and the imagined angry fanboy war actually becomes a reality. Not a good look for the industry right now, but then literally nothing else says serious attempt to get buyers attention. So pretty much the shows I find most decent this are among the least popular sellers this season and those I find most loathsome and unwatchable are among the highest. What else is new lol? kuuderes_shadow said: So it seems Japan is joined with MAL in disliking my favourite shows of this season (my personal top 4 being Genei, KamiNai, KinMosa and Kitakubu in that order). Then again my opinions of the things I've been watching this season has been a lot less varied than in any other since I started routinely watching airing anime near the start of last year. But I'm preparing myself for an upcoming season of disappointment as far as sales are concerned. As a general rule everything I seem to like in anime gets almost universally shit on by the masses as terribly written and an abomination and anything I tend to really dislike often seems to get championed as the pinnacle of quality. It's been that way for a while now and only shows the slightest signs of changing. Really makes me feel like a fish out of water sometimes, but like what are you going to do, it's just the way trends have been blowing. It's one of the funniest shows I've seen in a while, but I think it might have something to do with it not being of the style of comedy Japan seems to like. They're buyer base seems to be really hard to pin down. Again things you would think would be decent sellers in an average market often seem to tank there and things you might think would never sell in an average market are smash hits. It's just bizarre to me, it never feels like creativity and vision is rewarded much when it comes to TV sales for anime, just pre-established popular names or clear appeals to specific coveted buyer audiences like Fujoshi or Idol fans for the most part. |

Aside from Monogatari which is a favorite of mine I am also disappointed in many of the predicted sales for Kamisama inai no Nichiyoubi, Stella C3-bu, Uchouten Kazoku, Rozen Maiden. I really shouldn't be thinking about strategic buys, lost cause bombs or even extras at this point for my personal buys but it is hard not to think about them. Is Kinmoza now safely above the line? Uchouten Kazoku be a better strategic buy? Is Rozen Maiden already a lost cause as it appears, cheap but not enough extras maybe even for me to buy it? First episode was a recap quickly of two prior seasons which is confusing if you haven't seen them. Regarding C3-bu, the comment about it being not realistic enough tells me why it is not and will not be another GaruPan where they military fans came in and bought. Which is too bad as I am really enjoying the surreal nature of it but Japanese fans are not, sadly. As someone who has not read Kamisama Inai no Nichiyoubi's novels I quite enjoyed the first arc and found its mysterious nature to be part of its charm but hearing that novel readers are confused makes me wonder, gives me pause. It is a cheap 5 volume series but extras are light so again might not be one I need to pick up. I am otherthinking it this season perhaps but only Monogatari SS and Teekyuu2 are locks for me still at this point. |

Man those predicted sales of Watamote and Kaminomi... I enjoyed the manga of both of these, guessing it's probably the animation studios (Silver Link and Manglobe, really). The good thing is that they'll both receive a manga boost due to the anime's airing. Good for them. |

Also, most of fujoshi shows aren't hits and Aikatsu or AKB0048 didn't amaze the market either (a shame, as AKB is one of very best 2012 shows in my opinion). Latter part of your quote is simply false. |

Watamote only estimated to sell at/around 2k what kind of madness is this? I was expecting more than that tbh. Still happy about Free! estimated sales even if they will probably drop over the next couple volumes. I find Free! quite good in a way its different from KyoAni's usual stuff since it involves a main male cast which is a first for this studio. And at the same time its the typical KyoAni setting/storytelling. Probably my favorite anime of the season for more reasons than just OMFG HAWT GUYS!!!111 you see fangirls screaming around everywhere. Valvrave opening still going on strong even after being released for a while. xD I expect to see the second opening sale just as well since Nana Mizuki and TM Revolution are teaming up again. |

jmal said: I do hope it is just slightly below the cutoff. It would be normal if that is the case. Railgun v1 of season 1 sold 1726 BD in its second week for example. On the other hand, OreImo season 2 v1 (which sold fewer BD than Railgun2 in its first week) sold 1794 BD in second week. The cut-off this week is 1782, so it is already doing worse than OreImo2 v1 for 2nd week sales. I just hope that it will still be around 1700 when the full week's list is out. It's probably a couple hundred below the cutoff at most. This is normal. |

Kinmoza isn't doing to bad in BD rankings While my top 3 (Kinmoza, Ro-Kyu-Bu SS despite the BD rankings, and Symphogear G) aren't doing bad, I'm most worried about Fantasista Doll, since from what I read the mobile game has extra episodes not aired anywhere else, not sure if they are canon either, even worse the extras are giving me no incentive to buy because I have no interest in the game and the character OPs I want are way in the back (Madeleine's is in the very last volume). :( |

I'm glad Kiniro mosiac is doing decent, I hope it won't drop and barely make the manabi line like Yuyushiki did. Kinda a shame about KKK though, but the first few eps where really weak. So I can understand it. Its a shame CGDCT doesn't sell that high as some people seem to think they do. I'm also glad none of my top 5 series this season(unlike my top 9 of last season) are not doing horrible in stalker. Although I have no idea how much Gatchaman will sell. |
